What a sick and twisted man. Glad he'll probably never leave prison.

He’s eligible for parole in 37 years. He ain’t getting out.

catalinashenanigans Apr 30, 2026 +108
He's only 49. Unlikely that he'll ever get out, but entirely possible.

Osiris32 Apr 30, 2026 +34
Well, he'd be in his late 80s. If he survives that long and actually shows some remorse (which he hasn't at all), then maybe he gets a chance at parole. But the likelihood is rather small.

There are other charges pending and other warrants outstanding. I’m sure by the end of this there will be more years of prison due.

Sex offenders go in protective custody so they don’t get murdered. Depending on the prison and security level they either get put with people like them or basically locked down 23/7. Prison employees dont want the heat of people getting murdered on their watch. I live near 2 prison towns. My exes whole family were prison guards. I’ve heard so much more about prison life than I would like.

They should keep him in jail until he's broken then release him just before he becomes a health burden on our tax dollars.

You do realize that the prison system is already an inherent burden on our tax dollars.

**Note: The actor’s name is “Nathan Chasing Horse”.** Full article text: > LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Nevada judge sentenced “Dances With Wolves” actor Nathan Chasing Horse on Monday to life in prison for sexually assaulting Indigenous women and girls. > A jury had previously convicted him of 13 charges, mostly related to sexual assault of three women. > Accusers and their families told Judge Jessica Peterson they continue to suffer from the trauma caused by Chasing Horse, 49, and struggle with their faith after he exploited his position as a spiritual leader. > “There is no way to get back the youth, the childhood loss, my first time, my first kiss, the graduation I never got to have,” said Corena Leone-LaCroix, who was 14 when Chasing Horse assaulted her. “The life that little girl could have lived has been taken from me forever.” > The Associated Press typically does not use the name of alleged sexual assault victims unless they come forward publicly, as Leone-LaCroix has. > Chasing Horse, wearing his navy blue Clark County Detention Center uniform, stared straight ahead as victims read their statements and remained quiet as he was escorted out of the courtroom. He’ll be eligible for parole after serving for 37 years, and has continued to deny the charges against him. > “This is a miscarriage of justice,” he told the judge on Monday. > Peterson said she was struck by his continued denial of the charges despite the evidence shown in trial. > “You preyed on these women’s trusts and their spirituality, and you manipulated them for your own personal gratification,” she said before she announced his sentence. When the hearing adjourned, more than a dozen people in the courtroom clapped. > Other charges in Canada are still pending > The sentencing wraps a yearslong effort to prosecute the former actor after he was first arrested and indicted in 2023. That initial arrest reverberated around Indian Country, with law enforcement in other states and Canada following up with more criminal charges. Those charges are still pending. > The British Columbia Prosecution Service said Chasing Horse was charged with sexual assault in February 2023, though the date of the alleged offense took place in September 2018 near Keremeos, a village about four hours east of Vancouver. In November 2023, the case paused due to Chasing Horse’s charges in the United States, but resumed the following year. > After all of Chasing Horse’s appeals have been exhausted, British Columbia prosecutors will assess next steps, Damienne Darby, communications counsel for the British Columbia Prosecution Service, said in an email. > A warrant against Chasing Horse remains outstanding in Alberta, the Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service in Alberta said in a statement following Chasing Horse’s conviction in January. The Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service said that it is in contact with the Alberta Crown Prosecutors Office regarding the warrant. > January trial focused on his role as spiritual leader > Chasing Horse was born on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, which is home to the Sicangu Sioux, one of the seven tribes of the Lakota nation. Following his appearance as the young Sioux tribe member Smiles a Lot in Kevin Costner’s Oscar-winning film “Dances With Wolves,” Chasing Horse traveled across Indian Country to attend powwows and perform healing ceremonies. > During his trial, Nevada prosecutors said Chasing Horse used his reputation as a Lakota medicine man to prey on Indigenous women and girls. > Deputy District Attorney Bianca Pucci told the jury that for almost 20 years, Chasing Horse “spun a web of abuse” that ensnared many women. > Jurors heard from three women who said Chasing Horse sexually assaulted them. The jury returned guilty verdicts on some charges. He was acquitted on others. > Needing medical help > Multiple victims described how they participated in his ceremonies or went to Chasing Horse for medical help. > Chasing Horse allegedly told Leone-LaCroix when she was 14 that the spirits wanted her to give up her virginity to save her mother, who was diagnosed with cancer. He then sexually assaulted her and told her that if she told anyone, her mother would die, according to Pucci. The sexual assaults continued for years, Pucci said. > Chasing Horse denied the allegations and his attorney questioned the main accuser’s credibility, calling her a “scorned woman.” His attorney had filed a motion for a new trial, arguing that a witness was not qualified to talk about grooming and that the statute of limitations had expired. That motion was denied. > Victims and their family members testified that they struggle with their faith as a result of Chasing Horse’s actions. The mothers of the victims said Chasing Horse betrayed their trust and abused sacred traditions. > “Even to this day I struggle to regain my faith and spirituality,” said Lynnette Adams, the mother of Siera Begaye, one of the other victims. > The AP typically does not use the name of alleged sexual assault victims unless they come forward publicly or approved the use of their names, as Begaye has. > Begaye said she still faces complications after suffering an ectopic pregnancy as a result of the assault and being forced to undergo surgery. > “I am choosing to see this moment as a fresh start,” Begaye said. “I will rebuild my life, reclaim my voice and continue fighting for the future I deserve.”

One of my closest friends was a social worker for a native reservation in Alberta. After 6 months he quit his job and changed his occupation. He has so many horrific stories of abuse, mostly from the older family of these young girls. He is definitely a different person after his experiences. And not in a good way. He told me the problems were in almost every family and every avenue he tried to get extra help was shot down and essentially covered up as it’s a too deep rooted and expensive problem for the AB government to deal with.

National Institute of Justice report from 2016: **The vast majority** (96 percent) of AI (American Indian)/AN (Alaskan Native) female victims of sexual violence experience violence at the hands of non-AI/AN perpetrators; 35 percent have experienced intraracial violence. Meanwhile 90% of AI/AN male victims have experienced violence at the hands of non-AI/AN perpetrators and 33% have experienced intraracial violence. **More than 4 in 5** AI/AN women (89 percent) have experienced stalking by a non-AI/AN perpetrator, 91% of AI/AN men have.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say exactly because statistically white people commit more violent crimes against indigenous than they do against each other. Eta a source for the mayosapians that are offended. "Indigenous people in the US experience violent victimization at over twice the national rate, with roughly 84% of Native women and 82% of Native men experiencing violence in their lifetime. Notably, over 70% of violent crimes against Native Americans are committed by someone of a different race." I'm just going to say anecdotally as an Indigenous man who grew up on a Canadian reserve, but pretty much everybody that I knew well enough to know, were sexually assaulted and/or raped and/or abused at some point in their childhoods, including myself. Most of my classmates, and many of my family members, and that's just the ones that were open about it. Boys, girls, women, men, it doesn't matter. Men get killed, women get raped, boys and girls get sexually abused, and teenagers kill themselves at a dramatically disproportionate rate on the reserve and that's a statistical fact.  Edit: And it's almost always family members or members of the community leadership, chief and council, spiritual leaders, etc. I'm not American so I can't speak for the States, but it's an epidemic of violence and generational trauma and abuse in this country.
34
Far-Conflict-1172 Apr 30, 2026 +2
The states have their own level of ridiculousness as far as law enforcement goes and what can or cannot be done to offenders on tribal land.

I suspect there is pressure to minimize headlines like this. The rapists in office don't want attention on rapists getting justice
3
Lowca Apr 29, 2026 +5
Same. Kind of an avalanche of bad headlines at the moment. I was literally just thinking about how it's been some time since I've heard of a school shooting. They are still happening ofc, you just don't hear about them any unless they are really bad now. I think the average person can only take so much grim-dark in reality. Even worse I feel we're becoming increasingly desensitized to it.

Powwows are an actual thing. And Indian country isn't widely used by people anymore, but you see it in news articles like this because it's still the technical legal terminology used to describe native lands, I'm pretty sure, unless that's changed recently
41
michbail79 Apr 29, 2026 +23
Here in northern Oklahoma, it varies. You occasionally hear the term “Indian country” around the tribes. My tribe has an encampment, not a powwow. My other tribes both have powwows.
23
mnimatt Apr 29, 2026 +2
I definitely should have mentioned that the use of the term varies, so I edited the word really to widely, as that is more accurate. Thanks
2
LunarProphet Apr 29, 2026 +1
Youre a member of three tribes?
1
michbail79 Apr 29, 2026 +4
Yes. My maternal grandparents are both full blooded - my grandma was one tribe only and my grandpa was half and half of the other two. I am enrolled on one of my grandpa’s tribes but was raised around all three, two more so than one.
4
DrRussleJimmies Apr 29, 2026 +28
Native here, my family is actually from the reservation mentioned, and everything used here is normal and acceptable. We refer to that whole area as Indian country regularly, and most of our official government offices have Indian in the title. And Powwows are just traditional social gatherings with dancing and food and stuff, they happen all the time and there isn't anything even a little weird about saying he traveled from powwow to powwow.
28
ecklesweb Apr 29, 2026 +15
I decided to look this up. "Indian country" is a legal term used in [18 USC 1151](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1151). "[Powwow](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powwow)" is the legitimate name for a cultural ceremony held by native Americans and First Nation groups.
15
4th-Estate Apr 29, 2026 +13
Indian Country is a legal definition referring to land within Indian Reservations. Pow wow here isn't being used figuratively, they're talking about literal pow wows held by tribes.
13

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powwow >The word powwow is derived from the Narragansett word powwaw, meaning "spiritual leader".[3] The term has variants, including Powaw, Pawaw, Powah, Pauwau and Pawau. Some people might discourage the use of the term as a corperate buzzword type thing (like in place of an office meeting), but I've never seen any objection to use of the actual word.
3
Alarming_Cat_2946 Apr 29, 2026 +2
The Indian Act was historical legislation and the term is still used in some places.

Thank you for asking, The_Jizzbot. It is an Associated Press article and presumably follows the Associated Press style book guidelines which are widely considered to be the gold standard for journalism. However, I cannot say whether those standards are acceptable on a cultural or social level and will defer that part of the question.

cwx149 Apr 29, 2026 -1
I'm from the US and idk if I would personally say it but whether or not it's acceptable is complicated. The US still officially has the Bureau of Indian Affairs for example so there are still definitely times using the word Indian instead of Native American is correct as a proper noun The way it's capitalized also makes me think it may be referring to something specifically that's a proper noun but where they use it in the article is also after a subheading specifically about Canada and I have no idea about how/what the Canadian-Native American culture is like compared to that in the US where even there I have very little first hand experience
