Daredevil: Born Again?

Posted by Curious-138

Just a show of hands how many like Daredevil: Born Again. And how many have seen the non Disneyfied version of Daredevil (2015-2018)? I don't like the Born Again series as much as the original. I'm not sure exactly why, I can't exactly put my finger on it. Other than I like the old one better. But that's just me, I wish I could explain it, but I can't.

In 4 episodes we've had a guys armed snapped completely in half with blood and bone flying everywhere, people impaled in the eyes with knives, forks and even a damn lobster claw, and countless other extremely brutal displays of violence. And the language is ten times worse than the Netflix series with characters dropping f-bombs practically every other sentence. Saying Daredevil has been "Disneyfied" is weird take.

They don't mean that it's been injected with Disney princesses and rainbows. They mean that it's been run through the Disney factory. Overproduced and under-created. Just slop.

The Born Again one is made by Disney, hence Disneyfied.

Papa_Razzi Apr 15, 2026 +4
That’s not what people mean when they say Disneyfied…Disneyfied implies dumbing down, usually less violent, more commercial to a wider audience. Born Again is none of these.

gabbertronnnn Apr 16, 2026 +4
That's not what Disneyfied means, bud

DeathChill Apr 15, 2026 +8
I swear DD is way more brutal on this. Did he break nearly as many of his enemies bones in the Netflix fights?
8
Blueberry_H3AD Apr 15, 2026 +10
It is more violent lol. OP is just making the same boring comment everyone else does. “It’s on Disney so it’s for kids!” Yet we saw Fisk press a guy’s head like a watermelon, many broken bones, and the show is firing on all cylinders lol. The latest episode even did a huge callback to season 1 and added to that show’s lore.

Curious-138 Apr 15, 2026 -15
\>>“It’s on Disney so it’s for kids!” Hmmm.... Upon reading my comment again I don't see that.

fitzysbuna Apr 15, 2026 +6
hence why i am asking why you used the word "Disneyfied" the show is not light and fun its dark very very dark ! if it was "Disneyfied" there would be no blood ! people would not be killed like they are it would be done off screen all the time.

Curious-138 Apr 15, 2026 -19
Why is this downvoted? It is made by Disney.

_YeezusOfNazareth_ Apr 16, 2026 +5
disneyfied doesnt jus mean its made by disney bro, ppl usually say smth's been disneyfied to say its been toned down n stuff n less violent but i dont think thats the case w born again
5
someonesfetish Apr 16, 2026 -4
That's what \*you think\* they mean. OP has made it clear that's not what they mean. Committing yourself to misunderstanding someone isn't a worthwhile contribution to a conversation, so what's your point?
-4
_YeezusOfNazareth_ Apr 16, 2026 +3
the dude said “its made by disney its been disneyfied” like yea no shit its made by disney but saying its disneyfied doesnt make sense when its clearly more violent n shit than the last one?? why dont you make a worthwhile contribution on my nutsack bro clearly you know what he meant

The Netflix show was made by Disney. You don't even know what you are talking about.
2
someonesfetish Apr 16, 2026 -1
Nah, I feel you. Disney tends towards some real slop unless the creative team has a very strong vision and fights hard for it, so the quality varies wildly. Like, we got Loki made under Disney, but we also got Secret Invasion. Under the Star Wars umbrella we got Andor, but we also got Ahsoka. If there isn't someone strong at the helm, Disney will flatten out all of the subtlety, lore, and complexity out of the writing in an attempt to force a moral. They'll rely too much on VFX and go way too c**** on them. As a production house it definitely has a palpable style to everything it puts hands on. I'm actually not that mad at Daredevil: Born Again, though. I've always thought the Netflix shows were a little too overextended by their promised episode count and it made some seasons unnecessarily drawn out , but if were resonating just right with your vibe I can see why you'd feel a little underwhelmed with the Disney take.

kuhpunkt Apr 16, 2026 +2
> I can see why you'd feel a little underwhelmed with the Disney take. The Netflix show was made by Disney.
2
someonesfetish Apr 16, 2026 -1
No, it was made by ABC studios.
-1
kuhpunkt Apr 16, 2026 +2
And who owns ABC? It's as if you're saying that Disney didn't make the Avengers movies, because Marvel Studios did. When Disney owns Marvel...
2
someonesfetish Apr 16, 2026 -1
Who owns versus who operates. Disney bought ABC in 1996, they didn't build it from the ground up. Disney's Marvel TV productions however were pulled together in house shortly after acquiring Marvel and the quality of the output is distinctly different. If you can't tell the difference, I don't know what to tell you. Marvel TV created by Disney looks like Disney TV shows always have. The color grading is weird and it feels a little fake. The Netflix series look more like procedural dramas like Boston Legal, and Scandal.
-1
kuhpunkt Apr 16, 2026 +3
Disney controls ABC just like they control Marvel Studios. Marvel TV created very different looking shows. Agents of Shield looks different from Daredevil. How is that relevant? The Netflix shows were made by Disney, just like Disney made Avengers: Age of Ultron or Agent Carter. That's a fact.

kuhpunkt Apr 16, 2026 +1
What moral was forced?
1
someonesfetish Apr 16, 2026
That was a generalization, not specific to Born Again. If you want me to start going over where Disney has been heavy-handed with moral signaling I can, though. Did you think She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel we're a little too girl power? Did the Bollywood dance number in space in The Marvels make you cringe? Did you think Falcon and the Winter Soldier hit weirdly off key notes around immigration and terrorism? It's not that they're bad messages, or that they're not worth exploring, it's just that when in the absence of a strong showrunner Disney is really bad at making them feel genuine and it loses a resonance that you'd want a gesture like that to have.

kuhpunkt Apr 16, 2026 +3
>Did you think She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel we're a little too girl power? Not really, no. What does that have to do with forced moral? > Did the Bollywood dance number in space in The Marvels make you cringe? What does a dance number have to do with forced moral?
3
someonesfetish Apr 16, 2026
It has to do with the fact that Marvel has ignored criticism for years for a lack of minority representation, and now rather than taking the time and spending the money to make good representation that hits and creates mega fans the way they invested how many years in building up Tony stark? They're making stupid little dance numbers, being surprised when people say that's not what they're going to superhero movies to see, and then sidelining the characters like the problem is that those characters aren't marketable and not that they totally botched the execution. I guess they didn't though. I guess they're actually writing with you in mind and everything's fine.

watched all the netflix seasons back when they dropped and man, born again just feels... different? like the tone shifted in a way that's hard to describe. maybe it's because disney has their hands on it now but something about the grittiness got smoothed over. the original had this raw edge that made every punch feel heavier, you know? still watching the new one though because charlie cox is perfect as matt murdock, but yeah i get what you mean about not being able to put finger on it exactly.

I think tone is right, and that the product itself just feels more polished. I'm not sure it's a bad thing, but it does feel different.

The dialogue is just a bunch of cliches thrown together, the plot's too linear, and the action setpieces are too few and far between to redeem it. Both DD and Fisk are being motivated by loss/revenge, and it's kind of monotonous. Even Karen only has one chord to play.

Remember season 2 Daredevil would get his ass handed to him and take forever to take down Basic thug#4?

willtaskerVSbyron Apr 16, 2026 +2
The original series was better. It was more grounded more logical most of the time and had better fight scenes. I liked season 1 of Born Again at certain points when it was doing some fun stuff with Fisk's rose to power, Bulls Eye (the show insisting on having Fisk call him "Poindexter" when it's the least menacing name ever is to me evidence enough that they don't even edit there scripts), and Matt Murdock freaking out about Fisk while still trying to date and defend clients I know season 1 of Born again was a Frankenstein but I think people shit on it a bit too much when the overall arc was halfway decent and there were some excellent episodes in the bunch.  Season 2 has been all of the worst tendencies of season 1 doubled down. It's so much worse. Bad directing. Bad lighting. Weird music choices. Uninteresting fight scenes. Overproduced. The writing is just gibberish and when it does makes sense it's not altogether that interesting. Characters just doing stupid stuff or having motivations that don't seem to matter or make sense. And the whole boat thing is baffling. Why would Fisk need to smuggle guns into the city on a boat? Why would he need to smuggle guns in at all? He has his own SS. The best part of the season so far is Bullseye's little sequence in the latest episode not that that seems to really matter. The plot just doesn't seem to be going anywhere I need to follow.

It's not holding my attention so I don't know what's going on half the time and not really interested in going back to rewatch.

willtaskerVSbyron Apr 16, 2026 +3
Yes! This is it. The conversations are all boring. The fight sequences are all boring. The stakes are gone.

Overall, I liked Born Again more than the "original" series (the one with the same actors). That being said, the first few episodes of Born Again were waaaay better than the middle/later episodes.

I loved the original. I am enjoying Born Again, season 2 has been better so far than season 1. But it definitely isn’t quite as good.
1
psychedelic_tech Apr 16, 2026 +1
Born again season one was a bit rough around the edges but they also scrapped whatever the original plans for the story were and did a damn good job salvaging what they could. I'm loving season two. It has the perfect balance of everything. If the only thing you want out of this show are constant fight scenes and action this isn't for you. And I can't wait for >!Jessica Jones to show up!!<

CarneyVore14 Apr 15, 2026 +1
I agree. Not hating this Disney version, but it definitely feels toothless. The original felt raw and brutal. I do think they are doing a good job with the political/corruption and oppressed citizen storyline.
1
TheGentlemanBeast Apr 15, 2026 +3
That good job is the worst part of the show imo. Scope has widened too much. Still love it, but man, there are a lot of plot threads I don't care about this season
3
CarneyVore14 Apr 16, 2026 +3
I see your perspective, you aren’t wrong. After watching the most recent episode.

What does raw and brutal mean? Like violence? Because Born Again is super brutal.

I hated season one of Born again... But I'm absolutely LOVING season 2 of it. Season one did a lot of things I did not like. Karen and Foggy were barely around, there was a brand new cast we were just supposed to adopt and it just felt different and off. Even the fights didn't work for me. It very much felt like a CGI fest in most of the action scenes. Season 2 feels like Netflix Daredevil again. Karen is core character again, Matt actually shows his face in church, they brought back the boxing subplot (kinda). Bullseye is back FR. It just feels like a return to form. And this seasons suit might just be my favorite of the whole series (both netflix and born again). Also there is some great camera work and lighting.
1
moderatenerd Apr 15, 2026 +2
agreed. s2 is definitely way more watchable

If season 2 was on par with season one I probably would have stopped watching, so I'm glad they turned it around

The story and dialog is fine, at best. It's not that bad but it's definitely not on par with the original Netflix series. My biggest issue is how bad everything looks - the lighting, CGI, camera work, special effects, costumes, all of it looks incredibly c****. I think Daredevil: Born Again is one of the most low-budget looking shows Disney has made.

ShanklyGates_2022 Apr 15, 2026
The characters in Born Again are great and as good as they’ve ever been imo. But the overall plot is just meh whatever. Watching Bullseye obliterate the task force or Fisk chewing scenery is awesome but i just don’t care about the run of the mill corrupt bad guy does bad things and gets away with it. It works fine in any medium it just hasnt been done well in Born Again imo. The characters and action though have been class

I didn't like the part where Matt jumped in front of a bullet to save Fisk.
