Daredevil Born Again - has great ideas but poor execution

Posted by Big-Sheepherder-9492

The ideas and themes the show clearly has and wants to delve into come across as half baked most of the time. It feels like they’ve seen the original series and are just ticking boxes for what people liked about the Netflix show without a fraction of the actual good writing that was there to begin with. The stuff with the AVTF is interesting but still somehow feels half baked.. The commentary is extremely heavy handed (I don’t have a problem with WHAT they are saying and alluding to as I think it should be called out) but it comes across as extremely poor.

For better or worse, the show is what it is. My biggest issue right now is with whoever’s in charge of lighting and cinematography. The overall look just doesn’t jive with the grittier nature of the show. Plus, the use of lens flare this season is out of control - there was one scene with Matt and Karen in the first episode that was more blinding than when the bomb went off in Oppenheimer.

I disagree, and find the show quite enjoyable, but to each their own.

Same. I don’t understand these comments. Season 1 was a little rough, but I’ve been enjoying season 2 a lot.

They’re good episodes but also strange.  It’s true they just don’t quite have the kick of the Netflix shows, it all seems oddly sanitized even as they seem to make a deliberate effort not to make it so.

You might be wondering how Kingpin could possibly have been elected Mayor after all he did, then you see what happened in America. Trump was elected after all he did. It’s really not that crazy as people in power manipulate the masses.

You mean you’re telling me… they’re drawing PARALLELS to Trump this season? Must’ve been so subtle I couldn’t tell

Thousands of shows, books, movies, comics, etc. have had similar storylines. Literally a lot of what is in the show is ripped from the comics from decades ago. The reality is that America is actually experiencing what they have been warning us about for the last 80 years.

There are a lot of problems with the show, but I think the ones that bother me the most are the editing and the score. The editing style is bafflingly amateurish to me, it’s like they don’t have any confidence in their material so they’re constantly cutting one conversation into another to try to add interest or tension. But the cross cutting ends up weakening both scenes most of the time, especially the ones where they’re constantly trying to draw parallels between Matt and Fisk. It’s like yes, we really get it at this point, can you find a new way to make your point with the filmmaking? And then most of the other dialogue scenes are way too short to get into anything interesting beyond the most bland dialogue to drive the plot forward, or where characters can just say exactly what they feel or think, and we quickly move on. There’s no real weight to anything, but the show sure does try to trick you into thinking there is by using the other thing I have a problem with: the music. This show is SO overscored, it feels like they want every single moment to be profound and epic, so the music is constantly trying to reinforce how important everything is. But it doesn’t match what we’re seeing on screen or what we should be feeling from the characters, and on top of that it’s just kind of generic sounding. It sounds like those YouTube videos where people try and make a piece “epic” by adding really obnoxious string and choir chord blocks to everything. 90% of the time, the music is distracting to me in a bad way and takes away from what I’m seeing rather than enhancing it. (And that’s not even including the needle drops which are also mostly ill-fitting or corny.) There’s a lot more to be disappointed by sadly, but those are the biggest offenders. I really want to love this show, and I will say Season 2 has been better already, though it’s still not great. But the early reviews were hyping up the second half, so I’m gonna keep watching and hoping it gets there by the end.

Agreed, Born Again doesn't have the gravitas of the original. It just feels like an imitation. Also, besides the attention deficit editing, three other things drive me nuts: the fog everywhere, the lack of actual black in the colour grading, and the constant, unnecessary zoom-in shots. Once you notice them, you can't mentally go back.

There is definitely something missing. I loved the original show, and have rewatched it several times. But the new show is just not doing it for me. It just feels so hollow.

Same here. The Netflix seasons are some of my absolute favorite Marvel material, in both television and movies, but Born Again is doing nothing for me. I'm thinking of giving it one more week and then calling it quits because I'm forcing myself to watch it right now.

Even as someone who was never that hot on the original Netflix show I was still able to see that DDBA S1 was a step down in execution. Everyone said “well there was a lot of meddling in that season but season 2 will be better without that baggage” I never believed that. The problems run deeper than that. Now here we are, Season 2, and it’s still a mid MCU TV show. For me, Wonderman is what good MCU TV could be. DDBA is not it.

SoWrongItsPainful Apr 2, 2026 +6
DDBA S1 was such a hard watch for me. Even the new footage just fell so flat compared to the Netflix show. I will also never be able to forgive that it made Season 3 so pointless by bringing Fisk back and completely erasing what Nadeem did.

Big-Sheepherder-9492 Apr 2, 2026 +2
I hate the “well actually..” shit about Nadeem’s death. His sacrifice literally meant nothing and neither did Matt’s promise or speech in the finale.

Was disappointed with the 1st Born Again season, really wanted to like it but something was off and felt like it got worse with each episode. going to wait for full season review before i pay for Disney to watch the new season if its any good. The Netflix show especially the first season was some of the best live action stuff Marvel has done, would love nothing more than to get back into that world and enjoy more.

The AVTF feels half baked because Disney won’t let them go too heavy handed for fear of alienating republicans fans.
4
Vadermaulkylo Apr 3, 2026 +5
How much more heavy handed can they possibly f****** go??? Seriously, they’re going as explicit as they can without having someone turning to the camera and saying “This is ICE ! Fisk is Trump !!”
5
Darmok47 Apr 3, 2026 +2
Disney made cops with Punisher skull insignias on their uniforms the bad guys. That's pretty heavy handed to me.
2
Vadermaulkylo Apr 3, 2026 +3
We literally just had them go into a foreign owned restaurant hiding refugees and beat the shit out of the defenseless female owner before throwing said refugees in cages at an unmarked location or flat killing them. I seriously have no clue how you go much further than that.

You would be astounded at the media illiteracy of some people. Like I talked to a guy who had watched 3 seasons of the boys and not realized Homelander is the villain.

ZeeTopSpot Apr 2, 2026 +4
Nah, this season is pretty good.
4
ViralGameover Apr 2, 2026 +6
I disagree. It’s a great show so far this season and sits comfortably with the Netflix series.
6
Resident_Gur3076 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Lol not even close. Don't insult the netflix seasons like that
1
SoWrongItsPainful Apr 2, 2026 -5
I gasped reading this. Just objectively not even close
-5
ViralGameover Apr 2, 2026 +1
My opinion on which show is better is “objectively” incorrect? You have science to back this up? There’s no objectivity here, it’s art. BAS2 could reach the heights of S1 if it keeps going at this trajectory. If it stays at this quality, better than S2 and Defenders.
1
SoWrongItsPainful Apr 2, 2026 -10
Art can absolutely be objective, it’s how everyone knows the Room is bad and the Godfather is good. Born Again is consistently worse visually and narratively than even Season 2 of the Netflix show.
-10
ViralGameover Apr 2, 2026 +5
It’s not. Someone could hate the Godfather and love the Room. It doesn’t mean anything. I disagree. The only trouble this season of Born Again has with the visuals are the “boring” scenes. Colors get washed out with the heavy use of natural lighting in the law office. Narratively?? Season 2 of the Netflix show is nowhere close to where this operates lol. It’s 4 strong episodes and then 9 hours of “She’s the Black Sky Matty, there’s a war coming. You have to kill.” I’d rather a bunch of subplots that I worry might not get enough time than a major plot being unbearable.

Nobu: "Elektra, *you* are the Black Sky!" Elektra: "*I* am the Black Sky?" Matt & Stick: "*She's* the Black Sky?!" Me: "WTF is a Black Sky!"
2
ViralGameover Apr 2, 2026 +2
The funniest part is there will never be a satisfying answer. They completely ruin huge parts of the Daredevil mythos in an attempt to…ground things in reality? Subvert expectations? Who knows. I just think about how Elektra being the “Black Sky” only ever resulted in her being a somewhat efficient killer?
2
SoWrongItsPainful Apr 2, 2026 +1
How one feels subjectively doesn’t mean there isn’t objective qualities to art.
1
ViralGameover Apr 2, 2026 +1
“Good” and “Bad” are not objective qualities.
1
SoWrongItsPainful Apr 2, 2026 +2
But cinematography and writing are.
2
ViralGameover Apr 2, 2026
To what degree are you arguing that they’re objective qualities? Objectively both The Room and Godfather have cinematography and writing. What determines when one of those things are bad? “Your subject isn’t in frame so it’s a bad shot.” “Ok but I like it.” “Well alright.”

SoWrongItsPainful Apr 2, 2026 +1
You’re right, The Room is actually a good movie because someone likes it. Nothing can ever be bad. Thank you for enlightening me

Who tf gasps at comments about how a tv show is?
0
Big-Sheepherder-9492 Apr 2, 2026 -7
Its barely on par with Season 2 (the weakest season of the Netflix series)
-7
pirate135246 Apr 2, 2026 +1
It’s got a 92 percent audience score on rotton tomatoes
1
_nadaypuesnada_ Apr 3, 2026
Quality isn't a popularity contest. That's highschool-level thinking.

Resident_Gur3076 Apr 3, 2026
Who cares about rotten tomatoes

ViralGameover Apr 2, 2026 -1
It’s easily better than Season 2 so far. Born Again S1 also cleared it but it’s much closer. S2 of the Netflix show falls apart after the first four episodes. Obviously this could fall apart too, but as a whole, S2 of the Netflix show is mostly bad.
-1
GetsBetterAfterAFew Apr 2, 2026 -1
Its essentially unwatchable and a totally different show from every previous season imo. I could not make it thru e3.
-1
Zeen13 Apr 2, 2026 -1
So the new season is from a different showrunner from season 1. S1 was heavily reshot by the current showrunner who was brought into fix it. His only material on the first season is the first 30 minutes, the punisher stuff, the action scenes, and the last 2 episodes. The rest of it is the previous bad show that got canned.

foxhound197 Apr 2, 2026 +1
It's good not great but I kinda don't mind it at least doing stuff I haven't seen before my main complaint is the city under siege shit kinda feels very small for this world. Like Tony Dalton a great actor and I like his trail scene and how they finally seem to know what to do with Kristen character but maybe Luke cage or someone like that would fit more.

Reasonable-Turn-5940 Apr 3, 2026 +1
I don't think the show is going for subtle satire as much as punching you in the face with the themes. Nothing wrong with that IMO. A show doesn't always have to deliver a message with a smirk and a wink. it's not trying to be The Boys.
1
Resident_Gur3076 Apr 3, 2026 +1
The Boys is the opposite of subtle satire
1
NoDaddyNotTheBelt25 Apr 2, 2026
They spent an entire first season building up the idea of a vigilante task force but the idea is half baked to you? Ok…

I legitimately don’t understand criticism like this against Born Again when it’s still so much better than other MCU shows (even the ones that are great, like Hawkeye) sans Loki. I’m thoroughly enjoying it
-2
Resident_Gur3076 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Loki, WV, WM, MK, Agatha easily clear🥱
1
Big-Sheepherder-9492 Apr 2, 2026 -10
It’s a pretty low bar for MCU shows so it’s not saying much.. it’s not absolutely awful but it’s not exactly good either if you take it as what it is.
