Last sentence of the article: “I ended up loving him so much.” I have zero opinion on Dax Shepard either way, but it sounds like he was telling the story of the roundabout way they became close, and Variety decided to pick the most outrage-bait beginning for their headline.

Yep. I’m not Dax fan but it was actually a pretty nice story about two emotionally stunted broken guys who butted heads because of similar issues. And through what they found out was a similar upbringing. And they ended up becoming very close. This would be a much nicer thing to put out there.

Turns out therapy actually works.

Missterfortune 1 day ago +30
I tell everyone that I am in therapy and how it’s helping me grow. Not for sympathy points, but to show them that I have no problems with the image of me needing and getting professional help. I want to be a reason why someone seeks help instead of a reason why they turn it away.
30
Shwifty_Plumbus 1 day ago +5
I do the same thing. I also get, "therapy doesn't work for me" as a reaction from time to time. I let them know that I've been there and thought the same thing. The thing that changed is that I started putting in the effort outside of my therapists office and trying my best to apply what I learned. I know now that it's all going to take a long time because I am breaking habits and forming new ones. You can't just go to a therapist and think that's what the answer is, yet many people think that it's just a box that gets checked and you should be healed after an hour every other week or whatever. Use the tools you're being taught over and over again so it goes from something you need to think about to something that becomes second nature.
5
No-Stranger2936 14 hr ago +2
As someone in therapy, I don't think it's so much "therapy doesn't work for me" as much as it is "not everybody needs therapy." The irony of me saying that is that there's a lot of people in my direct life that absolutely need it, but all in all, I think society is heavily over therapized and we need room for self discovery and pain. Struggle. I feel like one of the biggest misuses of therapy is the misconception that we use it to avoid conflict and I think everyone needs to experience that shit.
2
Shwifty_Plumbus 13 hr ago +1
I hear that. I agree not everyone does. But I'm talking about people who do and say it doesn't work. I know a ton of guys that just have a straight up stigma on therapy so that's a fall back sentence they use. Yet they have endless posts on social media that are saying how depressed they are and nothing ever works out for them.

Its 100% the tools being taught, I think of my sessions as class and what I do with that info is the learning/healing process.

It makes me wonder about Kristen Bell’s real personality when she’s not being recorded.
217
Krabs9 1 day ago +134
I watched a Dax interview where he basically said his favorite thing about Kristen is that she can be a "perfect good hearted human who is nice and saves puppies" but she "doesn't make me be that person" something to that effect. It sounds like Kristen is genuinely a great person she just doesn't hold her husband to that standard.
134
RedWingedBlackbirb 1 day ago +68
From personal experience, putting pressure on an addict to be perfect can have devastating consequences. You meet people where they're at and offer help to improve themselves, but crazy pressure usually doesn't help.

Read the story before assuming. Here's a portion: “God bless both of us,” Shepard said. “We kept coming back to the same meeting. Over the course of the next two years, I found myself starting to kind of relate to him. I heard his story.” “His father shot himself in his house when he was a little boy,” Shepard said. “And his mom came upstairs and said, ‘I’ll tell you what happened if you promise that you won’t cry.’ So that little boy held onto that. And then that little boy grew up without a dad, like I grew up without a dad, and he was so in search of masculine validation, and it took all these shapes that I hated. That I’m sure he hated in me.” He continued, “I remember he had his share one time and I said, ‘I can’t believe I’m gonna say this, but that’s one of my favorite shares I’ve ever heard.’ Maybe a week or two later, one of his shares, he said, ‘I can’t believe I’m gonna say this, but I think I’ve come to fall in love with Dax.’ And then we became friends.” Edit: Eric shared this story on Dax's podcast for the whole world already.

It seems like every story I hear about Dax goes this way. He says something that’s kinda strange if you don’t know too much about him or the situation. Then it’s pulled or clipped out of context or partially. Then he’s dragged. Then someone in the comments goes “they aren’t including this very important and relevant detail” and people kinda ignore that revelation and just drops it instead of recognizing they were wrong. Then two weeks goes by and it happens again. And nothing ever actually happens or changes because it’s just people online complaining to the same people online. Because that’s what the internet is.
50

This was so sad: “His father shot himself in his house when he was a little boy,” Shepard said. That I’m sure he hated in me.” I hope Dane really found some peace in sobriety and growing. Interesting too that he had two girls. Hopefully that helped him deal with some of those issues around “masculinity”.

tys022 1 day ago +20
It's quite weird. Because he's successful I guess? I'm confident no one in here hating on him has spent significant time listening to the podcast. I stopped listening regularly a couple years ago, but his openness about his struggles with drugs and alcohol in his past was really helpful during my own. Maybe he's just stuck around a little too long, idk.
20
johnjenkyjr 1 day ago +10
I was never a fan of his, but stumbled upon his podcast a few years ago and he really won me over. We're roughly the same age and I found his stories about male insecurities and openness about his addictions to be really relatable. And although I haven't listened in a couple of years (paywall?), that podcast hit me at a time when I really needed it and caused me to do a lot of reflection about my own past behavior.
10
tys022 1 day ago +2
Same boat, friend. I'm sure he was insufferable during his using days, but his story is pretty inspiring. Dirt poor, abusive step dad, grinds for years to land punkd and then after more setbacks and getting sober he lands the podcast payday on his own merit. Idk what makes people dislike him so much. I think it's just 'cool' to hate celebrities.
