Last sentence of the article: “I ended up loving him so much.” I have zero opinion on Dax Shepard either way, but it sounds like he was telling the story of the roundabout way they became close, and Variety decided to pick the most outrage-bait beginning for their headline.

Yep. I’m not Dax fan but it was actually a pretty nice story about two emotionally stunted broken guys who butted heads because of similar issues. And through what they found out was a similar upbringing. And they ended up becoming very close. This would be a much nicer thing to put out there.

Turns out therapy actually works.

Missterfortune Apr 12, 2026 +30
I tell everyone that I am in therapy and how it’s helping me grow. Not for sympathy points, but to show them that I have no problems with the image of me needing and getting professional help. I want to be a reason why someone seeks help instead of a reason why they turn it away.
30
Shwifty_Plumbus Apr 12, 2026 +5
I do the same thing. I also get, "therapy doesn't work for me" as a reaction from time to time. I let them know that I've been there and thought the same thing. The thing that changed is that I started putting in the effort outside of my therapists office and trying my best to apply what I learned. I know now that it's all going to take a long time because I am breaking habits and forming new ones. You can't just go to a therapist and think that's what the answer is, yet many people think that it's just a box that gets checked and you should be healed after an hour every other week or whatever. Use the tools you're being taught over and over again so it goes from something you need to think about to something that becomes second nature.
5
No-Stranger2936 Apr 12, 2026 +2
As someone in therapy, I don't think it's so much "therapy doesn't work for me" as much as it is "not everybody needs therapy." The irony of me saying that is that there's a lot of people in my direct life that absolutely need it, but all in all, I think society is heavily over therapized and we need room for self discovery and pain. Struggle. I feel like one of the biggest misuses of therapy is the misconception that we use it to avoid conflict and I think everyone needs to experience that shit.
2
Shwifty_Plumbus Apr 13, 2026 +1
I hear that. I agree not everyone does. But I'm talking about people who do and say it doesn't work. I know a ton of guys that just have a straight up stigma on therapy so that's a fall back sentence they use. Yet they have endless posts on social media that are saying how depressed they are and nothing ever works out for them.

Missterfortune Apr 12, 2026 +1
Its 100% the tools being taught, I think of my sessions as class and what I do with that info is the learning/healing process.

I don’t tell people anything.  People would be like “must be nice to be able to afford that.”

Given Dax’s history I don’t believe it does, he still joked about killing his wife in public forums
-18
king_lloyd11 Apr 11, 2026 +10
No he didn’t. He made a joke about it privately and she posted it as a joke post to be like “haha look how fucked up and in love we are”
10
gmez3 Apr 11, 2026 +9
i know its a crazy idea for some people but some people have a different sense of humour, me and my girlfriend joke about stuff like that and believe it or not weve been together 4 years and are in no way having issues so maybe get in a relationship first

JunglyPep Apr 11, 2026 +7
You should try therapy yourself. Spreading this weird out of context and mostly incorrect version of this story is f****** evil. You’re a bad person.

Yea but would it get as many clicks?

He also has talked about this several times it’s not a new story and he discussed it with Eric on his podcast I believe at one point

It makes me wonder about Kristen Bell’s real personality when she’s not being recorded.
217
Krabs9 Apr 11, 2026 +134
I watched a Dax interview where he basically said his favorite thing about Kristen is that she can be a "perfect good hearted human who is nice and saves puppies" but she "doesn't make me be that person" something to that effect. It sounds like Kristen is genuinely a great person she just doesn't hold her husband to that standard.
134
RedWingedBlackbirb Apr 11, 2026 +68
From personal experience, putting pressure on an addict to be perfect can have devastating consequences. You meet people where they're at and offer help to improve themselves, but crazy pressure usually doesn't help.

Eh, idk. I’ve been seeing on the entertainment sublistnooks for YEARS that she is a terror to non-celebrity people. She’ll be nice and small talk with ppl but once she figures out you aren’t part of her world, snub city.

There’s a weird pull us Michiganders have on one another. I lived in NYC for 25 years and met a woman who was born in Michigan and had also lived in NYC all that time. Her parents were from Michigan. Her cousins lived by my father in Michigan. Been married 8 years now
5

I have had a few interactions with her (6?) and she is a truly wonderful human being. I'm sure she has faults like all of us, but she is super kind, down to earth and generally just pretty cool and fun!

One of the lamest things about the internet is people finding reasons to be mad at celebrities
14

Relax bro these people have literally nothing going on in their lives. Why do you think they devote so much energy to gossiping about celebs? Let’s them have their fun. It’s all they have
5

I don’t know who either of these people are, but in general celebrity itself is moronic.

-5

No. It was his podcast for me. Specially the one with Kristen Bell and Cher. He sounded like a insecure prick... trying to put Cher on blast with his rhetoric....

No_Yogurtcloset7776 Apr 11, 2026 +115
Read the story before assuming. Here's a portion: “God bless both of us,” Shepard said. “We kept coming back to the same meeting. Over the course of the next two years, I found myself starting to kind of relate to him. I heard his story.” “His father shot himself in his house when he was a little boy,” Shepard said. “And his mom came upstairs and said, ‘I’ll tell you what happened if you promise that you won’t cry.’ So that little boy held onto that. And then that little boy grew up without a dad, like I grew up without a dad, and he was so in search of masculine validation, and it took all these shapes that I hated. That I’m sure he hated in me.” He continued, “I remember he had his share one time and I said, ‘I can’t believe I’m gonna say this, but that’s one of my favorite shares I’ve ever heard.’ Maybe a week or two later, one of his shares, he said, ‘I can’t believe I’m gonna say this, but I think I’ve come to fall in love with Dax.’ And then we became friends.” Edit: Eric shared this story on Dax's podcast for the whole world already.

katsock Apr 11, 2026 +50
It seems like every story I hear about Dax goes this way. He says something that’s kinda strange if you don’t know too much about him or the situation. Then it’s pulled or clipped out of context or partially. Then he’s dragged. Then someone in the comments goes “they aren’t including this very important and relevant detail” and people kinda ignore that revelation and just drops it instead of recognizing they were wrong. Then two weeks goes by and it happens again. And nothing ever actually happens or changes because it’s just people online complaining to the same people online. Because that’s what the internet is.
50
No_Yogurtcloset7776 Apr 11, 2026 -3

This is so inappropriate to share. Dax is so fucked up for sharing something Eric said in confidence in a AA meeting. Like wtf? This is so incredibly personal and wrong. It’s not Dax story to share, disgusting and disrespectful

Eric literally talked about all of this with Dax publicly on his podcast and talked about their time in AA together.

This was so sad: “His father shot himself in his house when he was a little boy,” Shepard said. That I’m sure he hated in me.” I hope Dane really found some peace in sobriety and growing. Interesting too that he had two girls. Hopefully that helped him deal with some of those issues around “masculinity”.
3
Born-Introduction-86 Apr 12, 2026 +3
This is the most poorly written article Ive ever read in a major publication. Pretty sure this is straightforwardly pulled from his podcast and arranged by AI in a linear order. There is no story. This is an aside.
3
maddy7448 Apr 11, 2026 +8

11
tys022 Apr 11, 2026 +20
It's quite weird. Because he's successful I guess? I'm confident no one in here hating on him has spent significant time listening to the podcast. I stopped listening regularly a couple years ago, but his openness about his struggles with drugs and alcohol in his past was really helpful during my own. Maybe he's just stuck around a little too long, idk.
20
johnjenkyjr Apr 11, 2026 +10
I was never a fan of his, but stumbled upon his podcast a few years ago and he really won me over. We're roughly the same age and I found his stories about male insecurities and openness about his addictions to be really relatable. And although I haven't listened in a couple of years (paywall?), that podcast hit me at a time when I really needed it and caused me to do a lot of reflection about my own past behavior.
10
tys022 Apr 12, 2026 +2
Same boat, friend. I'm sure he was insufferable during his using days, but his story is pretty inspiring. Dirt poor, abusive step dad, grinds for years to land punkd and then after more setbacks and getting sober he lands the podcast payday on his own merit. Idk what makes people dislike him so much. I think it's just 'cool' to hate celebrities.

Think what you want about Shepard, but this is just someone talking about how he became close with the friend he just lost.

wtf are these stories on dax and what are these weird judgements on them… like if you actually listen to the dude and even loosely follow them the impression I get is he’s a pretty good and loving husband and father. The two of them seem to genuinely love each other and despite their wealth and Hollywood stuff they both seem surprisingly normal for two people at that level. Idk them obviously but I see these posts sometimes and they’re so different from what I gather from having actually listened to his podcasts or seen of the two of them interacting.
2
MyDogsNameIsBadger Apr 11, 2026 +1
I listen to his podcast every week and he does seem like a good father, husband and friend. He can be a bit self righteous but he owns up to that. People just read these clickbait article headlines and decide they hate him.

I’m sure you’re not clicking on all of them and leaving your boring 2 cents. But go ahead with your “DAE HATE THIS THING WE ALL KEEP SAYING WE HATE UPVOTE PLEASE” posts. Have fun!

I read the whole thread and not one of you haters actually stated a reason to not like Dax. I’m going to keep supporting him bc no decent reason to not like him.

Every single time this man opens his mouth I hate him more than I hated him the last time. It also colors my view of his wife.

I do not care for this man and have never actively seemed out information about him because I find him so f****** annoying. I’m not going to read this, just here to say the title alone is continuing the tradition of annoying the f*** out of me.
