I met Chi once at his brother’s wedding. He was a cool cat; totally chill and friendly. Not one ounce of diva in him. Interesting thing that all his brothers names start with Chi. Their father was Chinese, and mom was white; sweet lady. Loved her sons.

I was in a band with chi and his brother Ming in high school. They were both great guys, and i recently talked to Ming for the first time in years. I always knew chi would become something, even in high school he was a great bassist and a hard worker. I knew most of his family since we practiced at their house In Morada , and they were really cool kids

In Chinese naming, the surname/family name comes first. Then all the male kids will have the same second name, but different third names, same convention with the female kids. So if the surname was Cheng, and there are 3 sons in the family, they would all have the same second name, in this instance, Chi. But their third names are different, and many in the US will go by that third name. Sounds like the brother went by Ming
So this is how the boys could be named:
Cheng Chi Ming (in Chinese culture they would usually call him Chi Ming, but he might go by Ming here in the US cause it's easier)
Cheng Chi Ling Dai (this was Chi's full name, but he went by Chi. Not as common to have 4 syllable name, but it happens)
Cheng Chi ________ (potential third male child, could go by the third name, could go by the second and third names combined)
Girls would normally have a different second name (shared second names) and their own third name. So it could be like this (just some random examples)
Cheng Mei Lin
Cheng Mei Yu
Cheng Mei ______
Another example:
Friend of mine in Malaysia, 3 boys in family, these were their names:
Wang Kang Wei
Wang Kang Lu
Wang Kang Long
They each went by their second and third names, or they had chosen English names for themselves and would also use those.
Source: lived in Asia, speak Chinese, studied Chinese in college as well.

I noticed the same things, but I also know a lot of people around the world don't know the naming conventions in Chinese. Heck, I had to ask someone why all the girls had the same first name in a family, and that's when I learned about it. That's also when I found out most had chosen English names, but I only ever used their Chinese names because I was learning Chinese.
Edit: most of the English names people chose were pretty normal, or close to their Chinese names. Funniest one I ever heard from a guy my age (about 20 at the time, this was back in 2003) I talked to at a mall: Evel. I had him repeat it, and I said the word in "evil" in Chinese and asked if that was what he was saying. He said yes, spelled it for me, and I was so confused. He insisted that it was an English name, he had seen a guy with that name on TV. I asked if the guy was riding a motorcycle and jumping stuff. He said yes. I then had to break it to him that he had chosen the stage name of Evel Knievel. He was heartbroken, but his friends thought it was hilarious. But I had to respect the rebelliousness.

The last show I went to this giant viking of a man wearing overalls and no shirt walked up to the pit, kissed his girl, and went right to the middle. I thought "Oh shit, this guy is coming to crack heads." Instead, he took it upon himself (when not shoving people around in standard pit fashion) to pick people up when they fell, look for people's shit that they dropped it, and even wrestled a couple of folks out of the pit when they were throwing elbows and fists.
I was joking with my buddy, it was like he was kissing his girl before heading to work in the morning.

> The worst guys in the pit are the shirtless roided up short guys.
The worst dude in my experience are just the thick dudes, the guys that weigh so much more than anyone else, especially if they start swinging.
Also guys, if you're at a concert with stage diving, that's not for you if you weigh over 180. You get one dive a night and you better aim for big dudes who are watching who are hopefully your friends.

Hell, even 150 lbs is pushing it IMO. Stage diving is for young people. When I see a guy with a house and a mortgage stage dive and kick some woman in the head and just keep on going... tf is wrong with you? > Hell, even 150 lbs is pushing it IMO. Stage diving is for young people.
IMO weight and age don’t mean as much a proportions. What really matters is the weight to surface area ratio.
Not trying to fat shame anyone - I’m too thick to stage dive myself - but I would far rather help catch a 6’4” 200lb person who is 45 than a 4’11” 150 pound person who is 25. One of them has way more surface area and many more people can get their hands on them. Some of these little round people that go up again and again - they weigh as much as a taller person but are too compact for more than 2 or 3 people to get their hands on when they jump. It’s like trying to catch a f****** bowling ball.

10
beefknuckleMar 25, 2026
disagree, the worst people are the 40+ y/o big guys that think they can still crowd surf/stage dive.
i don't know how popular stage diving is where you are, but after the 10th consecutive 250 pound dude landing on your neck you get over it pretty quick . at least the aggro guys get dealt with relatively easily.

Yeah I grew up in the metalcore scene and then transitioned more into h******* punk in my later teen years. I have shirt that I wore to my first Cro-Mags show that still somehow has a footprint stain on it. I don't even remember how it got there.
I've been kicked in the head, punched, elbowed, jumped on, walked on, drenched in beverages, had the wind knocked out of me, and done my fair share of dishing each of those out, and I've still never been in a fight.
I did have one time where I was on the edge of the pit and a guy was 2-stepping basically right on top of me when there was plenty of space around him, so I shoved him away with my foot and he looked at me, swung, and hit the top of my head without ever breaking his 2-step, but we called that even and left it there.

I remember one time I was at the side edge of the pit at an underground h******* show and a very small, light person took a running jump at my back. I instinctively gave them a really strong shove backwards and they went like 8 feet backwards straight onto their back. Good times.

My 6'6 275lb of solid muscle buddy loves to look for those jerks at shows and put them in their place.
My all time favorite moment watching him work was when this one dude with spike bracelets was swinging wildly and hit a girl twice. My bud had already started moving towards him by the first hit, and by the second he was straight up running through the pit towards the dickhead. He grabbed him up by the neck and punched him twice in the face, then dragged him over to security to tell them what happened. Security dude thanked him for helping and tossed him a bottle of water lol.
The girl was with a skinny little guy and that guy looked so insanely thankful because he definitely knew he wasn't gonna be able to do much against the bulky jackass who hit his girl.
I was at a Sepultura show in the early 1990s on their Arise tour at Aloha Tower. The security for the venue were this big Samoan dudes. One of the main security guys was a mountain of a man I've seen working security at shows before. Well at this one he waded into the middle of the pit and was just teeing off on people blasting them in the face. Just having a great time f****** people up. That was the most blatant non-sexual pit fuckery I ever saw.

The only time I ever got in a legit fist fight was at an As I Lay Dying show. It was my 4th AILD show I'd been too and I never had issues with crowd killing at one of them before. I was on the outside of the pit cuz my girlfriend wanted to see what the hype was all about, it was her first metal show. I'm a big dude, 6'4" 230lbs, so I was between the pit and her to absorb dudes losing their footing and so I could help people up if they fell.
This guy goes in the pit and starts doing his weird fight dancing shit swinging is arms and legs around trying to hit people and the other pit goers start pushing him out since he was ruining the vibe. He comes over by us and just starts throwing fists and elbows behind him, clocks me in the side of my head, so I pushed him away and exchanged some words. He comes back on the next song, wraps his arm around my neck and throws me forward to the ground then immediately elbows my girlfriend as hard as he can right in the face, popping her nose. I got to my feet and just remember tackling him into the crowd and beating the c*** out of him. I got escorted out of the crowd by security. They saw the entire thing and luckily didn't kick me out of the show. Ended up shooting the shit with them the entire time and got to meet AILD afterwards. Wish my girlfriend didn't get hurt like she did but she looks back on it as a good memory and we've gone to many metal shows since and she thoroughly enjoys the pits now, we're just getting older and don't want to deal with getting knocked out cuz we're in one.

I'm a decade older and remember shows like slayer or sepultura in the late 90s and there were absolutely some crazy violence in those pits, at least in LA. Biggest fight of my life was when I realized my friend was on the ground in the middle of the pit getting boot stomped by two guys. Ended with about 7 of us in a melee and one of the guys pulling out a razor blade, as in literally just holding the blade. We nopee out after that. This pit was also about half the entire venue so people on the edge would end up inside of it as the pit moved so half the people in it didn't want to be. Pits got way tamer by the mid 2000s

This is also my experience of pits - ive been in rough ones where Ive came out with a whole side of me bruised (it was fantastic, 10/10 would do again), but EVRRY pit ive been in has also had everyone looking out for everyone, someone falls down the surround people make a human barrier and pick that person up. Gen Z is very protective of their personal space and millennials are old and out of shape. I see some hope with bands like turnstile seemingly (I’m not a fan so correct me if I’m wrong) being clearer about how to engage with moshing/crowdsurfing and such. Seems like a good middle ground where the kids are reminded to expect a lot of jostling and to go to the back if they don’t like it and the old guys are reminded that they’re big uncoordinated men and they should mind how much force and momentum they carry with them

Was in a Meshuggah pit 25 years ago, dude said he dropped his glasses, everybody stopped and helped him find his glasses, he put them back on his face, threw up a thumbs up, and people immediately went back to smashing into each other. That's a good pit
A bad pit, to continue to pull from my own experience, would be like the one I saw at a show Skinless was playing. When they started, it was like the entire pit flipped. Every other band on the show, normal, pretty chill pit, but their's? Suddenly the pit was full of bald dudes (no offense to non-awful bald folks, I'm not far from joining your ranks), all of them elbows out. Just a bunch of chuds who wanted to hurt people.

I took a friend to see poppy last year. We were standing watching and some dude just walked right in fron of us, pushed us, and made a move to the middle. He had a black shirt so we though security or medical. Nope just a fat guy in a shirt that said pit boss. He would just grab people and throw them into "the pit" f*** that pit hippo.

>Tbf recent pits I’ve seen were more “everybody have a good time and watch out for each other” instead of “I truly dgaf.”
I’ve been going to punk and metal shows since the late 80s and in my experience - outside of h******* shows - that’s the way pits have always been, except the decade when heavy music got popular and all the jocks and normies started going to shows thinking the point was to beat the shit outta people.
F*** crowd-killing, head-walking, fist-throwing assholes. Even in my 50s I love a good pit that makes me a little scared for my physical well-being but IMO there is nothing fun about getting f****** head-butted so hard you lose your vision for a second and then having to waste 15 minutes of a show making sure you don’t have a concussion.

Its either been that or straight up meathead crowd killing at shows I've been to lately. When you hit that sweet spot in the middle though.... can't beat it!

Good. That was always how pits were 20 years ago. Seemed to devolve for a bit where I'd hear about people just punching people in the face or whatnot (happened before too but seemed to get way more common). Went to a cannibal corpse show in that time and some military dude slammed my buddy on the ground and messed his knee up. That is NOT the vibe. We are supposed to all be there in solidarity. Not to just f*** people up. Good pits police themselves though, and good bands will call out bulletin, so at least there's that.

Metal and hard rock have definitely become a lot more popular in the wider zeitgeist and that helps. It used to be music for angry men who desperately needed therapy and that was about the best they could get unless they were fortunate enough to be in some sort of contact sport as well.
That said there's still some circles that have responded and gotten much more violent. Every now and then I'll go to a h******* show and see people "crowd killing" (yes it's as stupid as it sounds).

I saw Alien Ant Farm open for some death metal band before they broke out with their "Smooth Criminal" cover. Singer stopped the show and yelled at us for moshing. I think he was just mad that there were only around 15 people at the gig when they were onstage.

Chino fucked over Sergio Vega who was a longtime friend of the band and took over on bass when Chi passed. He recorded Diamond Eyes through Ohms with the band (4 albums spanning 12 years).
Chino refused to make him an official member of the band even after recording 4 albums with them (spanning 12 years) and they essentially just kicked him to the curb in 2021.

Hate to sound like one of those old, teenage girl hating dudes but this isn't untrue. Was literally happening right next to me at the recent Deftones show I was at. I've got no issue with people making TikTok vids but in the middle of a live gig ain't it. However, it was def not just the girls. Boys were doing it too.

Dominic Garcia, not Chi, Rest in Peace. Did two years on bass then went to drums and was then replaced.

Because Chi Cheng was not the original bassist. The article is about Dominic Garcia, who was in the band from 1988 to 1991.

TIL Deftones have been going for literally as long as I've been alive (almost, I'm 2 years older). I spoke to Chino once cus my mate waited in the queue for me at Download one year, got to the front and asked Chino to wish me a happy birthday (over the phone, I was at home).
That was 20 years ago, literally this year. Weird.

I'm so glad Chino survived his coke ordeal in the mid 2000s, it was looking pretty rough.
Still remember seeing them at the gorge in 2001, the intro to Change starting just as the sun set behind the desert canyon walls, followed by 3,000 people singing the chorus

I saw Deftones around 2009, was probably about 120 pounds and got completely rocked in the pit. Left bruised and bleeding. Best show I’ve ever been to.
Oh damn, that’s wild 😳 I’ve seen some intense crowds but getting kicked out for that? Pit culture can be so toxic sometimes, smh.

Smoked a very big, perfectly rolled J with Chi and Abe in 1995 in DC on the side of the 9:30 club. Two of the nicest dudes ever. Both super chill. Abe was really interesting and told a story about him and Steve Caballero eating tacos in San Diego and going to a museum on a day off. Chi gave me a hug and said “stay focused and stay nice”. I’ll never forget how normal they were and how accepted I felt in that moment. RIP Chi
