Finally, a shutdown consequence that hits them where it hurts.

PigglyWigglyDeluxe Mar 24, 2026 +116
Not hard enough.
116
ExileEden Mar 24, 2026 +114
Im still confused why congress still receives Healthcare benefits or their pay while we're shutdown. I say new bill stating they are the first to lose pay and benefits and we'll see how often theres a shutdown.
114
urbanlife78 Mar 24, 2026 +83
If their healthcare benefits stopped during a shut down, a third of Congress would probably end up dying from natural causes
83
LEIFey Mar 24, 2026 +75
Some of them may die, but it is a sacrifice I am willing to make.
75
Slow-Recipe7005 Mar 24, 2026 -4
It really shouldn't be. Which congresspeople do you think would die first? the people who rose from the ground up and are trying to bring about actual change for the people, or the corrupt oligarch puppets who have been getting rich off of fraud for decades?
-4
thethrill_707 Mar 24, 2026 +15
Yeah, our so-called leadership in Congress are anything but young and spry. Hell, Mitch has to reboot on the regular just to remember what group he's talking with. Another spent months in an elderly care facility while no one in congress or her constituents knew where she was. Hell, I'd feel bad about no term-limits killing these folks if they all weren't so filthy rich.
15
Quiet-Corner6150 Mar 24, 2026 +5
Eh, most of our politicians up there have a net value likely in at least the millions. It's "even better" they could mostly afford to pay out of pocket.
5
urbanlife78 Mar 24, 2026 +9
But they would rather pay out of our pockets
9
Quiet-Corner6150 Mar 24, 2026 +2
I completely appreciate that and effectively it'd be true regardless since even under normal operations, tax dollars pay them anyway. But just saying, it's not like *those* folks are going to suffer from lack of healthcare coverage the same way we do.
2
urbanlife78 Mar 24, 2026 +1
If only we could all have universal healthcare like they do
1
Excellent_Month_2025 Mar 24, 2026 +1
they can earn their shutdown pay by fighting in the Iran war that they are too cowardly to stop

MajorPain169 Mar 24, 2026 +6
Honestly being able to shut down government is the most stupidest system, at the very least wages should be guaranteed for all government workers. The whole system literally holds government workers as hostages to be used as a political bargaining chip. Even worse is as a result of this, workers quit and as a result you end up with issues like what happened at LaGuardia airport.
6
Wooden_Researcher_36 Mar 25, 2026 +1
I think you are mistaken. That was clearly Obama's fault.
1
theLoneliestAardvark Mar 24, 2026 +6
In theory it would allow the wealthiest congresspeople to starve out the less wealthy ones and be used to manipulate them into a bad deal for their constituents.
6
i_says_things Mar 24, 2026 +3
I understand the frustration, but I think this hurts the youngest more modest means reps. The dirtbags fly privately anyways and dont care about their govt check.
3
cefriano Mar 24, 2026 +3
The pay is so that wealthier members of congress can’t weaponize a shutdown to get poorer members to capitulate to their demands.
3
Blackthorn79 Mar 24, 2026 +3
I want an amendment that says if the government shuts down during your term your boxed out of the next election cycle. All three Senate, Congress and Presidential. If they thought they'd lose their job they'd come to the table.
3
sodapopkevin Mar 24, 2026 +1
Sadly the only way that amendment could come to be is if the people who would lose their power in that eventuality passed it. So yeah, never going to happen.
1
SunGregMoon Mar 24, 2026 +2
I share this whenever I can: These are the Healthcare options for all 435 congressmembers: Option #1: 30% cost of ACA Healthcare (70% subsidized). Option #2: Free healthcare at DC Area military bases. Option #3: Office of Attending Physician at the Capitol. Cost in 2025 was $560/annually for full service Primary Care. Also, they are open today during the shutdown too.
2
CornCobMcGee Mar 24, 2026 +2
Its to hurt the little guy. Why would they want to hurt themselves?
2
remweaver27 Mar 24, 2026 +18
They need a level of discomfort while traveling equivalent to that of the movie Trains, Planes, & Automobiles. I want them to have to ride in the back of a truck with a polka band to get to and from Washington.
18
TrailerTrashQueen Mar 24, 2026 +3
Consequences will never be the same.

6
mushpuppy Mar 24, 2026 +3
Yep. Why not. GOP has completely failed in its responsibility to govern. And the ones who don't like it, instead of running, should have stood up and for something. Craven cowards.

Hope this trend spreads

Pass a law that when there is a gov’t shutdown they lose access to the gym and non critical medical services at the capital.
461
peeple-pleeser Mar 24, 2026 +140
Health insurance will do.

Nakuip Mar 24, 2026 +11
Really grab them by the short, grayed hairs.
11
gramathy Mar 24, 2026 +5
that'll just mean the rich ones can still get healthcare Make it a crime to provide any service to a congressperson during a shutdown.
5
Pseudonymico Mar 25, 2026 +3
Or make them get secluded like they're on Jury Duty.
3
420_E-SportsMasta Mar 24, 2026 +203
Honestly a government shutdown should just trigger a no confidence vote for every federal elected official and force their terms to end
203
FigeaterApocalypse Mar 24, 2026 +83
This is exactly how other sane countries handle the situation.
83
darthstupidious Mar 24, 2026 +14
Yup, it really should. If a new funding deal isn't reached by the time it expires, it should automatically renew for a year (with inflation factored in) and every rep/senator should be ousted and banned from running for re-election. After all, they've proven that they're ineffective at their jobs.
14
accidentlife Mar 24, 2026 +22
Barring them from re-election effectively makes the budget a DOS attack: "Capitulate or loose your careers". Simply forcing a new election would solve a lot of problems.
22
VanceKelley Mar 24, 2026 +10
> Simply forcing a new election would solve a lot of problems. It would not solve the problem of an electorate of mostly irrational misinformed people. How can an intelligent, informed electorate be ok with a convicted criminal fraudster running the federal government?
10
accidentlife Mar 25, 2026 +1
The premise of presidential campaigns is simple: get good. The details get complicated. Regardless, Trump got elected because he was able to get the votes and Kamala wasn’t. Unfortunately, the Democrat party has essentially abandoned any hope of implementing change. For example: they have given up on the state of Florida. Their most recent presidential candidate’s campaign was catered to corporate donors that, as a whole, the population does not like. And most critically, candidates that do advocate for real change are shunned by their peers. Republicans have been able to slowly degrade government service, sow distrust in government, and effectively hobble DNC plans decades. The DNC has met them with capitulation. Together, both parties have managed to deadlock Congress for decades. The president and executive branch in general have assumed more and more and more and more of their responsibilities, while running against constitutional limitations that outright prevent the executive branch from being a legislator: slowly degrading government service, sowing distrust in government, and hobbling DNC plans for change for decades. Repeat and loop. As a result, the population voted for change. And boy has there been a lot of change in the past year.
1
darthstupidious Mar 24, 2026 +2
And? This would prevent the minority party from being able to hijack the negotiation process entirely because they too would be banned from running from office. The budget from the past year would go into effect, allowing elections to take place and letting new blood come in to a government that's already funded for the first year.
2
accidentlife Mar 25, 2026 +2
Just to be clear, the minority government can’t typically hold up the government. Budget reconciliation allows Congress to pass a budget with a simple majority. The reason for the partial shut down now is that the current Republican majority used reconciliation to pass the OBBB, and so can’t use it again for the same budget cycle. Regardless, having the threat of their careers over the minority party makes them so ineffective you might as well not have them. They will never be able to vote no, ever. I don’t wanna live in a world where either party is the only party that rules government.
2
Koomskap Mar 24, 2026 +1
but then we're back and square one where everyone just blames each other and nothing ever gets done.
1
Kevin-W Mar 25, 2026 +1
It happened once in Australia (called loss of suppply) and it never happened again aterwards.
1
KapnKrumpin Mar 24, 2026 +26
Minimum is they don't get paid either
26
FiveUpsideDown Mar 24, 2026 +26
Most make money off of corruption. My approach would be no pay, no health insurance and no stock market buying during a shutdown. My fantasy would be within tens days after a budget isn’t passed we have a snap election for Congress.
26
Hungry_Culture Mar 24, 2026 +10
> My fantasy would be within tens days after a budget isn’t passed we have a snap election for Congress. This wouldn't work in a 2 party system because then the minority party would never agree to a budget in hopes that a snap election would give them more numbers if not the majority. Americans aren't smart enough to research which party is at fault for a shutdown and vote accordingly. The vast majority of voters just blame whichever party holds the presidency. It'd be much more effective to codify into law that if a government shutdown occurs, no sitting member of the House or the Senate is eligible for reelection ever for any public office seat and they permanently lose all benefits.
10
elmwoodblues Mar 24, 2026 +3
CONGERSSMAN R: "How are you voting on (x)?" CONGRESSMAN D: "Well, my thoughts are..." R: "No, no: I don't give a shit about (x)! I'm just making a futures bet."
3
LEIFey Mar 24, 2026 +3
I'd argue that there should probably be rules about playing stocks while they're in office. Either ban stock trading entirely during their term, or make it so every single move is recorded publicly.
3
fuckswitbeavers Mar 24, 2026 +2
Dont agree w this. Most are already wealthy. Not getting paid makes it even more difficult for those who aren’t wealthy, thus reducing actual representation
2
identifytarget Mar 24, 2026 -4
Oh no. Not getting paid makes it difficult?!
-4
KuroFafnar Mar 24, 2026 +6
Makes it difficult for the non-wealthy.
6
Bright-Owl-3515 Mar 24, 2026 +2
For many, their income is not soley from their government jobs.
2
trevorhankuk Mar 24, 2026 +2
An important distinction is that they should forfeit all pay they would have received during the shutdown. No delay in payment until the government is back up. That pay should be gone for good.
2
adeon Mar 24, 2026 +18
I think a better approach would be to handle it like the Papal Conclave. Congress and the President get sequestered in the Capitol Building until they pass a budget. No one in or out until we see the white smoke.
18
IScreamPiano Mar 24, 2026 +3
That's kind of why things are finally starting to move, with Thune threatening to cancel their recess. Johnson had a lot of nerve prolonging the House recess in the fall.
3
Heavenwasfull Mar 25, 2026 +3
Lets add the "only bread and water" and tearing off the roof of the capitol building and I'm in.
3
adeon Mar 25, 2026 +1
I think hold that in reserve in case they still take to long.
1
Fun_East8985 Mar 24, 2026 +4
Shutdown should make them ineligible to be re elected
4
YaSurLetsGoSeeYamcha Mar 24, 2026 +3
Have you seen our leaders? That gym hasn’t had anyone step foot inside since Obama.
3
Traditional_Sign4941 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Pass a law they all get fired and we have new elections.
1
DrMobius0 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Just lock them in until they do their jobs.
1
IamnotaCST Mar 25, 2026 +1
Non-emergency services. I'm sure that they could spin their blue pill access as critical.
1
KuroFafnar Mar 24, 2026 -1
Yeah! Make it so only rich people can work in Congress! … wait a sec…
-1
lopsided125 Mar 24, 2026 -1
The "Let's pass a law that hurts us" gambit. Always works.
-1
NoSwordfish6949 Mar 24, 2026 +776
It should stay that way permanently. Why do they get special treatment? Last I checked these 🤡 🤡 work for us.
776
Spam_Hand Mar 24, 2026 +127
Maybe these benefits going away will free up enough extra profit that we won't have to pay for checked bags anymore! (Sorry to get carried away)
127
WhatAcheHunt Mar 24, 2026 +17
Better to be carried away than carried on.
17
Spam_Hand Mar 24, 2026 +2
At least some airlines still allow free carry ons...
2
Bittererr Mar 24, 2026 +75
>Why do they get special treatment? Because Delta wants their business. This wasn't some sort of government mandated special treatment, this was a private company deciding to cater to these people who fly a lot so that they will fly with Delta.
75
axonxorz Mar 24, 2026 +35
Let's follow that logic, Delta wanted their business, so they gave it away for free, and now they're not doing that, you assume Congress is going to... give them _more_ business? Don't be naive, Delta wants their influence. If every single Congressperson flew on a Delta flight every single day of the year, that would be around 0.1% of their volume, and that's with some _generous_ rounding. You don't literally _give away_ business to that small of a market segment without some expected return.
35
rob_bot13 Mar 24, 2026 +50
I'd like it noted that when I worked for the government I was not allowed to accept free coffee at meetings because it could be taken as a bribe.
50
lazyfrodo Mar 24, 2026 +6
Was this more than 10 years ago? I worked with government employees 5 years ago and they took our coffee daily. My understanding is that it’s fine as long as it’s not purchased at Starbucks or barista coffee. Basically if it’s in a carafe at work then it’s fine.
6
rob_bot13 Mar 24, 2026 +6
This was in 2015. We still got coffee, but it needed to be clearly universally available and frequently had a collection jar or equivalent to pay for it.
6
Matchboxx Mar 24, 2026 +2
I was a federal contractor and we often catered meetings with our government clients. To a point you made later, yes, we had to have a kitty nearby for them to deposit their “share” of the cost but virtually no one did besides the one SES person.
2
rob_bot13 Mar 25, 2026 +1
Yeah for sure this was the norm. It's just frustrating that people do that song and dance within the bureaucracy to appear unbiased and then you have elected officials (and political appointees) more or less nakedly taking favors and no one seems to care.
1
NoSwordfish6949 Mar 24, 2026 +3
Delta wants them to feel beholden to do something politically for delta in return, nothing more.
3
somermike Mar 24, 2026 +15
Then you haven't checked in far too long. Nearly every member of Congress is primarily funded by corporate, dark PAC or other heavily moneyed interests. The districts are so heavily partisan that over 90% of all House districts are considered safe for the incumbent party. They haven't worked for us in years and until we fix that we're not getting forward progress on reality anything.
15
SoSKatan Mar 24, 2026 +2
Well assuming they are traveling for work and perks here means lower fares, then it means less tax money is being spent (in theory.)
2
Omegoa Mar 24, 2026 +2
> Last I checked these 🤡 🤡 work for us. Check harder. They've always catered to money, but since Citizens United all Republicans and a chunk of Democrats are just blatantly owned by wealthy interests. It's pathetic how c**** some of our Congresspeople are.
2
TrailerTrashQueen Mar 24, 2026 +1
remember Sheila Jackson Lee? she had a reputation for demanding freebies and special treatment. an example of this was when she stole a woman's first class seat on United. Lee refused to give up the seat. the woman was moved to Economy Plus.
1
GEARHEADGus Mar 24, 2026 +1
Because the majority of the country doesn’t vote so we get stuck with assholes who just give themselves more power and then people go on Reddit and social media and b****

The real doge savings
1
imjustnatek Mar 24, 2026 +141
Why do they get perks in the first place?
141
wspnut Mar 24, 2026 +94
Members of Congress fly constantly between Washington and their home states. That makes them high-value, repeat customers. Big carriers are also on the GSA City Pair Program (basically the government's online travel agency), where airlines compete for business. In some way, too, airlines also value relationships with lawmakers who oversee aviation regulation, taxes, and antitrust issues - so there's a lobbying aspect to it.
94
Static-Stair-58 Mar 24, 2026 +78
If you wanted to know why these 80 year old representatives refuse to retire, it’s this. They’re terrified of losing all the perks that make them feel special and wealthy. A lot of which come from lobbying groups and corporations btw. Our government is so bought and sold. God damn it.
78
themoslucius Mar 24, 2026 +1
DC is a United hub though
1
inksmudgedhands Mar 24, 2026 +66
Oh, that's funny. Congresspeople usually get to cut the line. Thus making this whole TSA shutdown not much of a problem for them. But taking this perk away? Now they will find themselves waiting for hours in lines among the grumbling masses who will certainly be not to pleased to see them. Especially this holiday weekend. Have fun, guys!
66
Glad-Competition-757 Mar 24, 2026 +9
They just wont fly delta
9
ElCamo267 Mar 24, 2026 +6
I hope they have to fly spirit exclusively.

They should forget to start them up again later.
21

They should ban private plans to land. Guess how quick congress will come with a solution when the situation affects the Epstein class
18
Slade_Riprock Mar 24, 2026 +15
No public servant or elected official should EVER get/receive perks
15
khrijunk Mar 24, 2026 +3
This. It should be illegal to give gifts to elected officials. Maybe we name it something like ‘bribery’ Wouldn’t that be crazy?
3
anthematcurfew Mar 24, 2026 +10
“Delta discontinues bribe to elected officials”
10

Good. Can we suspend them robbing us of our money while doing nothing for constituents and insider trading for themselves?
4
a_HUGH_jaz Mar 24, 2026 +7
This should be permanent, across all fleets.
7
westergames81 Mar 24, 2026 +5
Good. If they want their perks back, fund the government.
5
worstpartyever Mar 24, 2026 +5
Airlines need to treat them the same as the unwashed masses, too
5

Well, the government is shut down, I don’t see any reason for them to leave DC until it’s up and running again anyway
6

Rare Delta win, but I'll f****** take it!
3
Mountain_Reveal7849 Mar 24, 2026 +4
Good!!! You dont get to enjoy perks when you vote against funding TSA.
4

Let them fly in coach. That would be a sight to see.
4
secret-identitties Mar 25, 2026 +5
Delta: "This is going to be great publicity for us." Everyone: "Wait, you were giving them special treatment?!?"
5
ChuckUFarley138 Mar 24, 2026 +9
Are these the "wins" we're willing to accept? Members of Congress now slightly inconvenienced? We're f****** cooked.
9

It's *a* win we will happily accept. Doesn't mean it's the only one.

Now private industry is holding the Government accountable.. welcome to the upside down
3
Calm_Chemist_4952 Mar 24, 2026 +3
Oh, you’re a member of congress, here’s your special cone-shaped hat, also you are required to wear this round red nose protector, and finally please put on this giant fluorescent t-shirt. Yes, it does say “kick me” on the back, don’t worry, that’s just for an emergency to remind other passengers you’re special, so they’ll give you a boost down the inflatable slide.
3
Andovars_Ghost Mar 24, 2026 +3
Like I said in r/news, they aren’t anyone special just because they won an election. They should always be treated the same as their constituents.
3
geologicalnoise Mar 24, 2026 +3
They don't need perks. They make 176k before their bribes kick in and they're constantly on recess. It's a complete slap in the face to every single citizen.
3
MeatMullet Mar 24, 2026 +6
Stick it to 'em!!!

Eh they probably all have airline status anyway
2
thelionsnorestonight Mar 24, 2026 +2
As an occasional ATL-DCA flyer, I’m pretty sure Delta parks planes at the T gates (closest to security) when elected officials are flying.
2
viera_enjoyer Mar 24, 2026 +2
They should had done as soon as the shut down was looming.
2
viv_savage11 Mar 24, 2026 +2
Another reason why I choose Delta!
2

It’s been under-reported, but Delta has been doing kidnap flights for ICE
1
shadowdra126 Mar 24, 2026 +2
Good
2
Ne0nGalax-E Mar 24, 2026 +2
Good. These incompetent assholes in government should be directly punished for being ineffectual. Govt shuts down, no pay or health insurance for anyone in congress until they get off their haggard asses.
2
terriblethx Mar 24, 2026 +2
And don't give them back.
2
Fucky0uthatswhy Mar 24, 2026 +2
I wonder how Trump is going to retaliate against a business this time
2
Wild_Billy_61 Mar 24, 2026 +2
Good. Now the house should all have their salaries frozen until they come together and end the shutdown.
2
AntoniaFauci Mar 24, 2026 +2
The source of this will be Delta themselves, trying to deflect from the reporting that they’ve been doing kidnap flights for ICE. In reality, politicians will continue quietly getting their perks so their complaints will be mute.
2
themoslucius Mar 24, 2026 +2
DC is a United hub, bigger impact if they joined in
2
galloway188 Mar 24, 2026 +2
None of them should have perks!

The same Delta who was discovered to be the airline that flew little Liam from MN to TX with his little blue bunny hat, so he could be lock up in the Dilly concentration camp? That Delta airlines. Yeah go f*** yourselves. This is a Trump style distraction and from the comments here, it looks like it is working.
2
CelticSith Mar 24, 2026 +2
Delta looking for some good will after being the ICE deportation airlines? F*** off Delta

Good, now if we could only get our orange leader (with a dirty diaper) , to stop billing the US taxpayers for his weekend war Florida trips. Ie he Mara Lago)gets MILLIONS to golf at his resorts and pay extra extraordinary rates for Secret Service all billed to the US taxpayer. Let the Lindsey Grahams and Kash Patel of the world fly coach for a change.

I feel for the employees that have to deal with these entitled little shits who aren't used to being told "no"

Will Delta also stop transporting people to detention centers for ICE? [https://nz.news.yahoo.com/delta-air-lines-shipped-liam-231303626.html](https://nz.news.yahoo.com/delta-air-lines-shipped-liam-231303626.html)

this makes it sound like it was an in kind service but something tells me part of that funding paid for this and delta is no longer getting paid, so they took it away.

Cut them from service entirely. Not just perks.

This will only work if the other airlines follow. If just Delta then it will be too easy to just book on another airline.

If members of congress use Delta perks as their power, what are they without it?

EnregedRamrod Mar 24, 2026 +1
Now they'll pass a law saying they need private jets.

Politicians should be paid a low base salary then bonuses based on performance.

ToadP Mar 24, 2026 +1
Oh like this is even going to be a blip on their radar, The lobbyists and companies will just so happen to be going wherever the members need to be at the exact same time on their private jets.

TheThirdStrike Mar 24, 2026 +1
That'll show them. No more sky miles for you, but here is your $790,000 ~~bribe~~ donation from our lobbyist.

I love that their "punishment" is just reality for everyone else. America is such a corrupt country

barbieq68 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Why do they get perks not offered to the general public? For any career government employee that would be a huge ethics violation, why do we hold politicians to less standards
1
mama_always-said Mar 24, 2026 +1
Wait, what?!!? they also get perks on Delta? FFS.

They have perks? After already being wealthy and in seats of power?

Cute, but the upper class has their own jets. This only punishes the lower class of this system .
