South Florida could use some money for Tri-Rail. Tallahassee pulled about *$42 million in funding and it's at risk of being shut down entirely. There's also plans for another commuter rail line that we desperately need.

Florida was colonized by the rail and now we have next to no functional rail lines. It's a true disgrace. The fact that tourists have to drive like <10 miles to Disney from their hotel on the interstate is ridiculous. And south Florida is a total f****** mess with all the interstates carving up the cities
It took me like an hour to drive 15 miles north out of Miami at like 9pm last time I was there..

GreyLordQueekualMar 24, 2026

There will be odd ducks in the bunch who do such things, but generally speaking you dont accumulate wealth in the billions by being a good person or an example of humanity.
Many of these billionaires wealth is also not liquid or able to be made so quickly being tied up in stock valuations and other games the wealthy created for themselves to make number go up. They can do a lot with that wealth but are often incentivized to use it in ways that only enrich the stocks their wealth is tied to.
Basically the ultra rich and their values to society are often a pile of horse shit.
36
Commentator-XMar 24, 2026

They can take very low interest loans to finance whatever they like using their illiquid wealth as collateral and the debt as a means to pay less taxes. The way you put it makes it sound like they can't access or benefit from their wealth because it's all tied up in stocks but in reality they have access to a very large chunk of it at any time they want.

I am an air traffic controller. I moved thousands of planes safely every workday without incident. We get zero flying discounts or perks. Why the f*** should those POS's get anything.
Edit: Wow just got out of work and just saw this comment blew up. Thank you all for your kind words. Even though we don't get flight benefits or always get paid on time (because of shutdowns) many of us take pride in our work and get satisfaction from moving large amounts of planes safely and efficiently. As most of you have seen this week just one mistake from a controller can result in tragic fatalities. Understaffed and overworked facilities have been an issue for over a decade now along with outdated and decaying equipment. One of the issues most people don't hear about though is that since our union is unable to strike we have no real bargaining power. ATCs haven't had pay renegotiated since 2009! Because of constantly climbing prices and inflation this is a constant stressor weighing on the back of the mind of controllers who already have a lot on their plates. This is especially so for ATCs that work in small facilities in expensive areas.

Yes and the unlimited corporate money in politics almost singlehandedly explains what brought us to this point. Much of what Trump has done is to try to benefit either the oil industry, tech industries, or private partners of ICE. Some of the Democrats who chicken out and help Republicans are doing so because of their corporate backers. Even the radicalization of politics these days is driven strongly by for-profit social media companies who have incentives to keep people scrolling and clicking and angry all the time.

This is probably a really unpopular opinion, but I highly believe the job should just pay more. Senators and representatives make $174k.
This sounds like a lot, but it requires two residences. You keep your own residence in your state and have to have one in D.C.
I’m a lawyer and I considered running for office before, but it makes no sense financially. The pay is higher than what I make, but my net income after paying for a second residence would be much lower. And I don’t even live in a high cost of living state.
The pay should be high enough to attract qualified people to it as a job.
Since it isn’t, we end up filling the seats with people who are already rich and don’t have to worry about things like saving for retirement.

10
shakeyshake1Mar 24, 2026

I think it would help immensely. Honestly I think $250k-$300k would do it. Or $174k with housing in D.C. paid for by the government.
It doesn’t even need to be great housing. A basic furnished apartment with internet and electricity would be fine.
It just shouldn’t make someone worse off than they are at their current job, within reason.
If you aren’t going to make money from lobbyists and bribery, then the job has to make some sort of financial sense.

Things look bleak but don’t lose hope. Dying movements tend to lash out and try and seize power in an accelerated fashion on their death bed.
The surge of the far right is them sensing the end is near and this is their last chance to take over. Left wing movements are growing in popularity and awareness of the broken system is also growing. They wouldn’t need to rig elections if they were popular. It’s why they’re relying on things like AI to try and replace the work force before it’s actually ready. They don’t have time to slow walk this and get it right which is leading to mistakes.
The bad news is these dying movements do a lot of damage before being removed.

This war has been going for many decades and probably will still take more decades. But the writing is on the wall.
Conservatism is going to die, because educated people do move away from that ideology. All the societal achievements we enjoy today have been made in spite of conservatism trying to block and abolish everything. The world is connected, we speak to and make friends with people of all colours, shapes and native languages across the globe. We enjoy more freedoms than ever before. We are never going to go back to whatever hell conservatives consider to be their ideal way of life. We will fight them and outnumber them when the day comes.

Trump doesn't even have a vote and has no functional role until it comes to signing something into law. As per usual Republicans are acquiescing to him, that's the sum total of it all. If Republicans wanted this to end, they would pass the bill and override a veto, but they're cowards.

I know that insider trading is an issue, but put that aside for just a second.
They get more ''off'' days than you do by default. Session breaks, vacations, days they simply refuse to show up in order to prevent quorum or whatever.
The amount of money they get paid on days they're not actually required to work would probably balance out the airline benefits before you look at the first dollar they make by trading unethically
Why don't you get as many paid days off as they do? Why don't you get free health insurance and complimentary meals? Are they worth that much more to the world than you?
If they are, they should show up six days a week and earn their living, just like you.

Being elected representatives of the people, I can see a case for airlines providing a travel perk which might help them better serve the needs of the people. Ultimately their positions require that they go back and forth between their home districts and Washington frequently. Travel costs can add up for the congressmembers that aren't already wealthy.
All that being said, they do such a shitty job that clearly this perk is not actually resulting in constituents bring well-served by their representatives.

Hopefully take away their free access to the "Private Suites".
Private suites for Delta is amazing. You never have to go to the main airport building. You go into a seperate building at the airport and get processed for your flight there.
TSA is done at that building.
Once done with TSA you get put into a nice SUV with your luggage and they drive you on the tarmac to the flight you are going to be on. They directly load up your luggage and walk you up the exit ramp to put you on the plane.
Most rich people use this benefit but politicians get it for free.
256
vasthumiliationMar 24, 2026
+42
Are you referring to PS (formerly The Private Suite)? This is a private terminal available at LAX and ATL, but also recently announced to be coming to MIA and DFW. I can't find any indication that 1. Delta operates any similar service or 2. members of Congress are given free access to any such service. Maybe you can share a reference?
42
RegulatoryCaptureMar 24, 2026
+22
Yeah, I feel like this person is mixing up a lot of different things.
Like the SUV on the tarmac thing sounds like what you'll get for long or tight connections as a Delta 360 or United Global Services member.
And I'd bet a LOT of congressmen are Global Services or equivalent. Not because it is a perk the airline gives them, but because they fly so often that they earn that status. Maybe it is easier to get the invite when you are a politician (the exact qualifications aren't published), but commuting back and forth to DC racks up the miles fast...plus add official visits to places, campaigning, personal travel...
Also, I believe most of them typically decline seat upgrades as a rule (don't want to be seen as wasting taxpayer money on first class even if it was a "free" upgrade) so the airline knows that giving GS/360 to a congressman won't cost them an upgrade seat.
I've flown with my congressman before. He was on a friendly chat basis with the gate agents (small town airport so usually the same staff) since he's there every week, boarded first with the premiums but sat in the back of the plane even though that 6AM midweek flight should be pretty easy to get upgraded on. And since it is a small town, getting to DC is a minimum 2 legs each way, so you rack up the status fast.

Everything the admin had been doing is to intact tighter
