"We want him crucified with Christ" has to be the most ironic statement from a supposed christian lol

Pastor just played through fallout new Vegas and really thought the legion made a lot of sense
128
Vaperius Mar 26, 2026 +1
Which, because common sense is dead: The Legion are the bad guys and so is the NCR, and so is House. That's the point. Your choices in that game are a slaving autocracy, a corrupt byzantine oligarchy, or a despotic corpocracy headed by a man with a massive ego and god-complex. None of the major three players are "good", but the Legion is unambiguously evil. Your first introduction to them is literally after they've slaughtered an entire town of civilians, and crucified any survivors. They are little better than more organized raiders and bandits.

Well, if your first introduction to the US was after the My Lai massacre, would you side with them or the Viet Cong?

Locke66 Mar 26, 2026 +40
I took a look at one of the services at his Church when Hegseth first got elected and the one I watched was literally just the Pastor talking about how God gave powers to the armies of the Kingdom of Israel to genocide their opponents and the guy talking about "how cool it was". I skipped through a few others and it was all more of the same with bits of modern politics thrown in. They also had a video advert for a course to "teach you how to be a Christian man" which was everything you'd expect.

It tries to give his statement plausible deniability cover rooted in Christian weirdo talk. He also mentioned that he wanted him to die then be given new life with Christ. That's where this part about crucifixion came in too. So when he gets called on it he can try to weasel out of it, at least to Evangelicals, by basically making it a born again metaphor. Of course, he undermines it once again and makes clear it's rooted in hate by saying barring that, he should be stopped by any means necessary.

37
Lets-B-Lets-B-Jolly Mar 26, 2026 +1
I grew up Lutheran in Texas due to a father from Wisconsin, and Southern Baptists have never made sense to me at all. My mother was old school southern Baptist growing up and could tell stories about it. Tent revivals and Billy Graham sermons and NO alcohol or dancing or even Rock music allowed. I only once made the mistake of raising my hand when her family had a funeral and asked if we were saved. Fun way to discover what testimony was. Growing up in Lutheran church, we were told to pray quietly and do good works without showing or telling others because that was "unChristian" and showing pride. That your relationship with God was private and personal. I swear we only went to church to have potluck dinners after service... So much of the Christianity MAGA espouses seems like the opposite of what even the "moral majority" under Reagan promoted, and it was pretty awful.

ripyourlungsdave Mar 25, 2026 +27
This is actually a pretty common phrasing in Christianity for bringing someone to Christ. It's a reference to Galatians 2:20. "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." They're still all weirdos, christo-fascism is stupid and I hate all of them. But he's just speaking out of scripture. Signed, an ex-christian fundamentalist of 25 years.
27
alficles Mar 26, 2026 +1
Yeah, I had to scroll too far to see this. Talerico absolutely, 100%, understood this, too. "Crucified with Christ" never, ever refers to physical death, but always to the death of the sinful nature.
1
Feed_Me_No_Lies Mar 26, 2026 +1
Yup. I’m a liberal, a gay atheist, but I grew up in the southern Baptist Church. He literally was just talking about “the old, bad verson of yourself or someone being killed, and being raised again in Christ.” But if you were not raised in the church, it sounds very bizarre. Hell: I *was* raised in the church and it sounds bizarre lol. I just know what they meant.
1
GildedAgeV2 Mar 25, 2026 +45
Former Evangelical here. It's a reference to a Bible verse (Galations 2:20). In context, *that part* of the pastor's statements is just a desire for Talarico to come around to their view. It's basically a Bible meme. The rest of it is ... more directly related to seeing him come to ruin. You don't get deep into Evangelicalism because you're smart and good at pattern recognition. Unless you're in the ministry and know a good grift when you see one. Sometimes it's a little from column a and a little from b.

But is a fight about that topic going to get them more followers or fewer? I don't know, but its an argument worth having.
22
Blackstone01 Mar 26, 2026 +1
It will 100% lose them followers, which is why they fear Talerico so much. They aren't going to gain more followers by spewing hate at him, and every time they bring attention to him, he is going to strip away Christians on the periphery of their base as he pokes and prods at the decades of right wing Christian nationalism brainwashing they've built up. But spewing hate is all they know, since talking about love thy neighbor and feed the poor goes against conservative ideology.

I really think over time the Christian nationalists are going to revert to some kind of neopaganism. It has many of the trappings and appeals.

>Their religion is a tool to bludgeon their enemies with, nothing more.  This finally clicked with me a few years ago, and it cleared up SO much mental bandwith. See also: politicians (of course mostly GOP) and hypocrisy. Those "How could they abuse their religion so much?" or "how could they be so casually hypocritical?" questions used to drive me crazy. But indeed, they *don't care* at all. It's not even an issue for them. The only and I mean *only* thing that matters is defeating enemies, owning libs, destroying anything and anyone they see as enemies. It's that simple. It's like sports to them. "Their team does X = great, fantastic, brave! The other team does X = those vile, disgusting cheaters!"

Random question, are you into Stormlight Archive or is odium just one of those words that I've never seen used before? Odium is a character in Brandon Sandersons Stormlight Archive book series, but I've never seen that word elsewhere. In the series it's a god that represents hate but misrepresents it as passion to manipulate others.

21
RobTheThrone Mar 25, 2026 +6
You know, now that you mention it, I think I've heard odious before but it's not commonly used in my experience. It's more common than odium at least.
6
NapoIe0n Mar 25, 2026 +6
Right, I suppose rare and common are relative terms. It would be better to say that odium is hardly ever used, whereas odious is rarely used. But odious is something that a bookish kid might say. I can't imagine anyone using odium just like that in a conversation.
6
B-Z_B-S Mar 25, 2026 +11
Both. It's a real word, but the only reason I know it is because of that series. It came from the 17th century, according to Dictionary.
11
RobTheThrone Mar 25, 2026 +5
That's awesome, well now thanks to you I also know it's a real word and I'm going to work on integrating it into my vocabulary. It's funny how for a while in the books it was never fully revealed what it's nature was, but we could've just looked it up in the dictionary.

>Because now he represents actual Christianity, I think this is dangerous thinking. These are real christians. And christianity is a problem. Talarico may be a good person, but it's likely despite his religion, not because of it.
5
IrrelevantLeprechaun Mar 25, 2026 +4
The whole line of thinking of "your Christianity isn't real like my Christianity" has spread to both ends of the political spectrum. Whether a politician represents "real" Christianity or not should be entirely irrelevant to how they conduct themselves in office. Their main and only priority should be serving the people they represent.
4
IrrelevantLeprechaun Mar 25, 2026 +2
I'd rather Talarico represent his constituents, not Christianity. This whole idea of politicians "correctly" representing religion is part of why we are in this mess. Religion should be irrelevant to political office.
2
drtolmn69 Mar 25, 2026 +375
> James Talarico, the Texas Democratic state representative and Presbyterian seminarian, has said he forgives Pete Hegseth’s pastor for praying for his death. On Tuesday, Texas’s popular Democratic nominee for a US Senate seat pushed back against comments from Brooks Potteiger, the defense secretary’s closest spiritual adviser, who said: “We want him crucified with Christ.” Somebody's been mixing meth into the sacramental wine. This is incredibly demented ... but I suppose typical.

Every powerful Christian I've ever met is like this. Plenty of genuine good people who are also Christians at the bottom of the economic ladder where they're "intended" to be, but Christians with power are exclusively psychopaths who act in direct opposition to the teachings. There are zero exceptions; the doctrine makes this abundantly clear that you can't both be rich and a good Christian. If we can't figure out how to make people in the first category recognize the *obviously* evil behavior of those in the latter, they'll succeed at their express goal of bringing about the apocalypse. It's a weird position to be in; they already have all the right ideas but have somehow been conditioned to ignore them.
17
akuzokuzan Mar 26, 2026 +1
Ive met some very rich and good Christian people... its just that they are very few compared to the rich and pretend Christian an average person will encounter. Nationalism in general is a disease that easy influences people and combined with theology, makes it a powerful medium of influence. Christian, Muslims, Jewish, Hindu, etc. All can easily influence the populace if you add nationalist ideals.

One of the oldest surviving pieces of Old English literature in existence is a poem known as [The Dream of the Rood]( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dream_of_the_Rood). It is believed to be from 8th century Anglo-Saxon England, which is around when the Vikings were shaping the area. At this time, Christianity was also spreading, but the Vikings were resistant to it, viewing it and Christ as inferior to their h******* Norse gods. It is believed by some that The Dream of the Rood was actually written purposely to make Christianity appeal to the Vikings, as in it, Jesus is depicted as a mighty warrior doing battle with death and the cross as his loyal retainer who must execute his lord for the good of Jesus' people. So it is likely that the writer(s) was/were heavily influenced by the Odin story. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. Can you believe I'm an unemployed writer with an English degree?

Robert Eggers is a fantastic director. His **Nosferatu** remake is good, but his best IMO are **The Witch** and **The Lighthouse**. ...I think we just went over his entire professional filmography, so, if you enjoyed **The Northman**, try those.  **Nosferatu** is the most conventional, **The Witch** is earliest and the most raw...**The Lighthouse** is definitely the weirdest, though arguably the least violent, with great performances.

More people voted for Talarico in the primaries than either Cornyn or Paxton, by a few hundred thousand. Texas voters are apathetic- if Talarico can prove to us that he is working for us, which is is doing a great job of so far, I wouldn't count him out I like how everybody on this sub can agree that the SAVE act would be bad, and disenfranchise voters; but when it comes to the most voter suppressed state in the nation yall just act like suppression isn't an actual thing that affects votes. Texas would be blue if our government didn't work extremely hard to keep us from voting.

These guys are ChristoFascist Evangelicals. Basically the Uruk-hai of American Protestantism. You have to be aware of them because they are dangerous but they deserve to be ridiculed, mocked, and need to be ostracized from mainstream society.

Fun fact: we can attribute to Christianity, and in particular the Cistercian abbot and Papal legate Arnaud Amalric, the strategy of *"kill them all and God will know his own:"* the notion that it is good, just, and godly to commit mass-murder and genocide because, in a mathematical sense, you're expediting the rates at which good people will go to Heaven while weeding out the bad people. Doesn't seem like things have changed much.

I have a suspicion that if someone held a gun to the heads of people with that perspective, they'd very quickly decide that maybe death _isn't_ such a generous gift to bestow on others.

there is nothing Christian about Christian nationalism. Jesus did not believe in using force to impose his views. Jesus was anti-government, not pro-war, pro-hate, an anti-immigrant.

The later roman empire also employed a kind of christian nationalism. Essentially a christian state. The first CINOs

American Christianity is just so…disturbing. But then, so is American capitalism, democracy, militarism, and gun worship. I don’t even know what we — the rest of the world — are supposed to do with this *insane titan* that is America, because T is just a symptom. Seriously, *how are sane nations supposed to coexist with American culture?!* Ugh, sorry; rant over. Kooky pastor, etc. etc., nothing to see here.

Many Americans are f****** dumbfounded as well. It's scary here.

James Talarico is what MAGA tries and fails to portray Charlie Kirk as.

American Christianity is a plague, this is what it means to live your faith. Can't wait to see him do greater things
2
tom21g Mar 25, 2026 +4
Good move on Talarico's part, but there's also room to make an issue of a pastor calling for someone's death. And tie Hegseth to that and his pastor.

StanDaMan1 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Talarico showing us how to Christian.

"Pray for an opponent's death" - are we back at witchcraft, my lord? edit: This is a christian. So we summon Satan, or one of his infernal horde? Lay out pentagrams with carpenter's nails?

Remember when Obama's pastor said "god damn America" during a sermon and the right essentially wanted them all lynched?

The new christian values. 1. I am the Lord thy God. Thou shall ~~not~~ have strange gods before Me. 1. Thou shall ~~not~~ take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. 1. Remember ^not to keep holy the Lord's day. 1. ^Don't Honor thy father and mother. 1. Thou shall ~~not~~ kill. 1. Thou shall ~~not~~ commit adultery. 1. Thou shall ~~not~~ steal. 1. Thou shall ~~not~~ bear false witness against thy neighbor. 1. Thou shall ~~not~~ covet thy neighbor's wife. 1. Thou shall ~~not~~ covet thy neighbor's goods. Throw in the seven cardinal sins too. Hypocrisy be thy name.

I like him, if i was him though, I'd be putting out that paragraph specifying that i don't feel suicidal, i know how to swim etc...  Talarico for the win!
3
chuckangel Mar 25, 2026 +3
When I went to a Southern Baptist church for the first and only time, I was treated like "boy, you know you don't belong here" kind of attitude (I'm not white). And that stuck with me ever since. I'm no longer a Christian, but the thought that Christ would approve of turning \*anyone\* away from His House and His love is absolutely abhorrent. There's no hate like Christian Love resonates with me.
3
Turtledonuts Mar 25, 2026 +3
This just in, Talarico is apparently so pious that his death would help resolve our sins.

Republicans are holding Christians hostage on the abortion issue. They can get away with murder as long as they just say "but abortion." It's so unchristian.

BeginningOil5960 Mar 26, 2026 +1
Why does this make me dream of Talarico for president and Pete Buttegieg as VP (or vice versa, but, they have to be on the same ticket?) ~Black female former non-denom evangelical Christian who is still Christian, doesn’t attend any church by choice anymore, believes in discipleship & is a lifelong queer ally amongst other “seek justice, love mercy, walk humbly with God” principles including all human rights and civil rights

Tax churches.

Talarico appears to be a true Christian. If anybody wants a real-world example of Christianity, it's him. Id vote for this guy.
5
Epicardiectomist Mar 25, 2026 +5
I am not only an atheist, but stand against the idea of gods and religion overall. Ironic that when you put your religious choices aside, a Christian and an antitheist can stand on common ground and fight alongside each other.
5
RobonianBattlebot Mar 25, 2026 +10
I am also an atheist and a huge supporter of Talarico because of his stance on the separation of church and state. He has fought hard for us Texans for the past 8 years to try and keep us from turning into a theocracy. Unfortunately, he is outnumbered.

No_Performance_8657 Mar 26, 2026 +1
You might consider yourself an anti-theist. I’m against it all as well.

Christian nationalists really be out here like “Look like I was just praying for your death! I didn’t really mean I want you to die! I just mean I want the old version of you to die and be replaced with a version that believes the same things as me. Which is why I’ll use language about how you should be cut to the heart, should be crucified, should be turned into dung on the ground.”
2
Dramatic-Emphasis-43 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Hegseth’s pastor prayed for a dude’s death? Still convinced these clowns worship the devil and not God or Jesus.

1
Big-Yak-8928 Mar 26, 2026 +1
Guys like this pastor LOVE to demonize liberals for support abortion, calling it “murder” of babies, yet wouldn’t give a single cent of government aid to helping young children and families, and certainly wouldn’t speak out regarding the children the US and Israel have bombed in the past few years.
1
PartsUnknown242 Mar 26, 2026 +1
“We want him crucified with Christ.” Wouldn’t that be a good thing? Because Jesus was crucified for our sins and sent to be at the right hand of God.
1
JeaninePirrosTaint Mar 26, 2026 +1
Jesus even said "pick up your cross and follow me" and Paul says "to live is Christ and to die is gain". The death threats are a sign that he is espousing Christ-like beliefs
1
tonylouis1337 Mar 26, 2026 +1
I'm a big time James Talarico fan. He's a great guy and his success would be incredibly beneficial for Christianity and in turn the world.

A Christian pastor praying for the death of others is more of an anti-cleric move.  WWJD?
1
OkMushroom995 Mar 25, 2026 +3
Pete Hegseth may be the most outwardly bloodthirsty "Christian" we've ever seen. They want the Ten Commandments in schools but can't even abide by the main one... And they see no contradiction, because it was never about what Jesus said; it was just about taking power over others. According to their own wacky worldviews, they are possessed by the devil.
3
marilynmonroeismygma Mar 25, 2026 +3
I’m not particularly religious, but I find it absolutely fascinating how much Talarico has in common with Jesus Christ as a symbolic figure. A charismatic guy from humble origins who speaks truth to power of a state religion that enables corruption and greed and punches down on the most vulnerable. And just like Jesus, he gets death threats and called a heretic. It feels like a modern rewrite of the same story. Really, I think it says a lot about how little human psychology has changed in the 2,000 years since the bible was written.
3
drethnudrib Mar 26, 2026 +2
That's the difference between us and them, between those who follow Christ and those who use his name in vain for political gain. Talarico doesn't harbor ill will towards those who want him dead. When he's insulted, he turns the other cheek so his enemies can slap it as well, then prays for their forgiveness. This is what Christian leadership looks like. Campaign for the forgotten, for the lesser-than, for the marginalized. Unto the least of these my brethren, you have done unto me. Make that the f****** point of all of this. Jesus Christ sacrificed himself for all of us, not just one party, and not just for the one percent.
2
throwawaywitchaccoun Mar 26, 2026 +1
Tell me youre not a Christian by explicitly telling me you are absolutely not following any of Christ's rules.

At this point there's just no point in saying anything any more. We know they're the bad guys, they know they're the bad guys, anyone with half a brain knows that they're the bad guys. Don't get me wrong: I know I'm not a good person. I'm not kind enough, I'm not generous enough, I'm not hard-working or thoughtful or supportive enough. The one thing that gives me hope is that I'm not a Christian: however bad I am, I'm not as bad as the Christians.
