There's a lot of history but not too many relevant details. Basically, the owner at the time wanted it to be the "Winter White House," and willed it to the US government. Congress took a look at it and found that it cost $1million/year (in 1973 dollars) just for upkeep, and would be impossible to secure, so they *gave it back*.

The area about 10 miles west of where I live is nothing by farm land and everything tho my east is a city. It’s pretty crazy to me. I feel like anything west of vermillion is straight up rural and should be more representative of that area while everything east is basically one big sprawling suburban city. Yet we all just get one representative. It’s not fair to either the rural voters or the more urban voters. We really needed to pass that legislation last year? Couple years ago? That was for a non partisan committee to redraw the districts but the misinformation campaign about that was insane. My parents still have cable TV and the advertising ran against that were sooooo dramatic and misleading. I wish we could just have normal adults running things again. Can’t wait until MAGA eats itself and dies.

This is why the polls are always so weird about Trump. It's a personality cult, people go out of their way to vote for Trump but not for Republicans. When Trump is on the ballot Republicans do much better than polls would suggest because people that normally wouldn't vote go out of their way to vote for him. When Trump isn't on the ballot those same people just don't vote, leading to large losses.

President Donald Trump suffered a humiliating wakeup call on Tuesday when a Democratic candidate won the election for the Florida House district that includes Mar-a-Lago. Democrat Emily Gregory won the State House 87 seat in a special election against Republican Jon Maples. The South Florida district includes parts of West Palm Beach, including Trump’s private club where he continues to spend many of his weekends.
