Good How many times is Trump going to reject TSA funding?

Somnambulist815 Mar 25, 2026 +75
Sending ICE to airports was a major miscalculation, even by this admins standards. Telling everyone that they could've been paying TSA this whole time but instead want to give it to jackboots to stand around
75
is-this-now Mar 26, 2026 +1
The Republican plan is to get TSA funded and then sneak in anti-voting money via the reconciliation process. So Dems need to get reforms in now to prevent that from happening.

machmasher Mar 26, 2026 +1
there’s a whole lot of hardworking people that are part of DHS not collecting a paycheck right now, not just TSA

better headline: "USA Today Continues To Suck Convicted Felon's Ass, Lies About Source of Holdup in Straightening Out the Government Shutdown Mess"

DukeOfGeek Mar 25, 2026 +10
I have seen no major media source report on just how many times Democrats have tried to fund TSA.

realancepts4real Mar 25, 2026 -5
& I haven't seen any reports from those major sources that you're an actual human being. \` we all haven't seen things!

This comment is just weird.

Please, please, please remember that it's Trump that chickens out, not Democrats.
62
CyanCazador Mar 25, 2026 +29
In all honesty Chuck Schumer has a pretty good track record of chickening out.

thecoastertoaster Mar 25, 2026 +2
cluck, cluck schumer

TheForeverUnbanned Mar 25, 2026 +1
Hey, last time he sent his WHIP out to chicken out for him!

-wnr- Mar 25, 2026 -2
I think it more likely that they offered Schumer something or had some kind of leverage over him. Conjecture of course.
-2
Standard-Cockroach64 Mar 25, 2026 +68
Hopefully they don't back down.

putsch80 Mar 25, 2026 +51
If there’s one thing the Democratic leadership is competent at, it’s backing down from a fight when they are finally starting to get the upper hand. “Seizing defeat from the jaws of victory” should be the new party motto.
51
buffysmanycoats Mar 25, 2026 +47
This fight has been going on for like two months now and they aren’t showing signs of backing down. Write to your reps and thank them for it and tell them you support their continued firm stance on the issue.
47
putsch80 Mar 25, 2026 +7
Sadly, there are no reps from my state to thank. Also, remember the last shutdown fights? Dems held on for 6 weeks and then suddenly caved.

Powerful_Toe_8155 Mar 25, 2026 +3
They actually did get some concessions that led to the current partial shutdown, which is under better conditions for them. A lot of important things like food stamps were explicitly funded until October. What Democrats conceded was that they would pause the shutdown until late January unless the Republicans gave them additional concessions on health insurance before that (which was never going to happen). Depending on how you look at it, this is basically the same shutdown as the previous one, but with much better terms for the Democrats, as rhe only super noticeable disruption is with the TSA.

kdeltar Mar 25, 2026 +2
What goes on over there? Oklahoma I mean
2
putsch80 Mar 25, 2026 +3
In OKC, it’s pretty good. We are a very purple city. Mayor is a former Republican legislator who is very moderate and very popular, even among Democrats (his name is David Holt…he’s had a lot of national press. [Example](https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/20/opinion/oklahoma-city-mayor-diversity.html)). Our city is well run and I’d say most people here think our city government does a good job, especially given what it faces from state government. Hell, we are even having some of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic events held here, which our city government was a big part of procuring. Tulsa is a lot more red, especially in its suburbs, but still a nice city that has some progressive streaks. Outside of those two areas, it’s a goddamned political wasteland.

SwissChzMcGeez Mar 25, 2026 +1
We saw what happened in November.
1
juliuspepperwoodchi Mar 25, 2026 -3
How long was the last shutdown before Chuck completely capitulated after getting zero concessions?
-3
UghFudgeBwana Mar 25, 2026 +1
Oh it was worse than nothing. He got a promise for a vote on a bill the GOP were obviously going to vote against, which they did. Zero concessions would have been less embarrassing than that display.
1
leon27607 Mar 25, 2026 +1
They end up backing down because they’re always more willing to “compromise” but they really need to grow a backbone.
1
Street_Anxiety2907 Mar 26, 2026 +1
Why wouldn't they back down? Music to Chuck Schumers ears. 🎵***VoTe BlUe No mAtTer wHo*** 🎶

absentmindedjwc Mar 26, 2026 +1
To be entirely fair.. they did at least put themselves in a good position with the last one.. they negotiated welfare benefits to last through October.. and lined up DHS stuff to expire now. They can afford to drag this one out.. they couldn't really afford to drag *everything* out. I was pretty pissed off the last time.. but this time around, they're honestly in a much better position to dig their heels in. Lets, of course, see if they actually decide to stick it out.. or if they're just spineless cowards after all.

Standard-Cockroach64 Mar 25, 2026
And of course the endless spam I get asking for money.....

DeanOnFire Mar 25, 2026 +3
You would think after the last time they folded and got nothing out of the compromise but a flimsy promise on a vote (which even then they had to beg for), they would learn that Republicans are not to be trusted in negotiations. Seems like it's sticking this time and I hope it holds.

Turbulent_Juice_Man Mar 25, 2026 -19
Democrats? Back down? That's all they know how to do.
-19
loglighterequipment Mar 25, 2026 +22
This article we are all commenting on is reporting specifically how they are not backing down.
22
Patsanon1212 Mar 25, 2026 +14
These people exist in purely vibes based political analysis. This site is filled with people who think the Dems had massive leverage when they chose to end the previous shutdown. Ask them how and they'd say, "they had public opinion on their side". Then ask them how they could leverage that public opinion into pressure and you won't really get an answer. At least not one that isn't easily dismissed.
14
Turbulent_Juice_Man Mar 25, 2026 -6
Schumer backed down on the last gov shutdown deal. Senate democrats have leverage with the filibuster. But they choose not to actually require it and give Republicans enough votes to get to 60. So yes, Democrats absolutely still have leverage. Until Republicans call the bluff and remove the filibuster, Democrats can refuse to vote for cloture and they could have kept the shutdown going. They caved.
-6
Patsanon1212 Mar 25, 2026 +6
I think we're conflating leverage with ability. Yes, the Dems had the power to keep the government shut down indefinitely, but leverage means that holding out would be in their favor. Republicans have shown over and over that the don't care about how unpopular their hardline zealotry is. Why would holding out longer have changed their position? Especially since at the time of end of the shutdown, we were pretty much 1 year away from a major election cycle.
6
tapdncingchemist Mar 25, 2026
You're right. People kept behaving as if that the republicans were about to fund the ACA extended subsidies \*after\* taking a beating in the elections. It was an example of Democrats playing their limited hand to maximum effect. But also most of the complainers were unaware of or did not care that federal employees were going without pay and SNAP benefits were not going out.

Give it 24 hours. Democrats always, always ALWAYS back down.

Good. Shut it all down.

usatoday Mar 25, 2026 +9
From USA TODAY: As negotiations ramp up on Capitol Hill to end the Department of Homeland Security shutdown, Senate Democrats seem to be clinging to a particular word: reforms. It was a term party leaders used in the context of Immigration and Customs Enforcement nearly two dozen times during a March 24 news conference. The refrain threw cold water on a new GOP compromise to fund the critical agency — minus ICE's enforcement and removal operations — and end a crisis that has upended air travel across the country. "Democrats are continuing to push for modest reforms," Washington Sen. Patty Murray, the top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee, told reporters. "The current Republican offer in front of us does not do that." End every article with "This comes as Trump tries desperately to distract from Epstein"
14
AcanthisittaNo6653 Mar 25, 2026 +3
Now that trump has taken ownership of the shutdown, the Dems can be Dems.
3
IAmMOANAAA Mar 25, 2026 +6
A deal would have been reached by now if the Democrats didn't back down during previous shutdowns. The GOP is expecting the Dems to cave.
6
Patsanon1212 Mar 25, 2026 +25
No, they simply don't care. It's wild to me that you see every unpopular choice that Republicans double down on and don't see this.
25
FalstaffsGhost Mar 25, 2026 +14
Yeah, the difference between the two parties is that Democrats actually care about people and their lives. Republicans are in a cult, and they don’t care if people suffer and die or if bad things happen to them because of a shutdown.
14
Fickle-Molasses-903 Mar 25, 2026 +11
Democrats do things for people. Republicans do things to people.

absentmindedjwc Mar 26, 2026 +1
I was pissed off the last time too.. but in hindsight, I feel like they actually orchestrated this one pretty well. Last time, they "gave in" and got welfare programs funded through october; with DHS funding running out now... politically, they're able to actually dig in their heels on this one.. maximum pain for Americans - especially the wealthier ones that frequently travel.. without America's most vulnerable not ending up starving to death.. It really does suck for the people not getting paid.. but democrats have tried 8 times to get them paychecks, and republicans are the ones blocking it because they want extra ICE funding to open private detention facilities across the country.

mowotlarx Mar 25, 2026 +3
Reform? No. Abolish. Defund. Prosecute.
3
madasfire Mar 25, 2026 +1
I'm glad to see Chuck Schumer took a break from unwrapping a hard candy.
1
dudeimgreg Mar 25, 2026 +1
How long until Chuck backs down and gives them everything they wanted in the first place, thus making it all for nothing?
1
MidWestKhagan Mar 26, 2026 +1
Reforms not abolishment, be very aware of this. Democrats do not want ICE to be gone, they want to use ICE as well because they and the GOP are two wings of the same reaper drone.
1
NexusNickel Mar 25, 2026
I feel like instead of having a generic sign on Capital hill and whatever reporters, Dems need to go on Fox News and blast the hell out of the Trump Regime. Start playing by their tactics. Having little signs and sending letters is doing nothing. Get on their own platforms and blast them.
0
tapdncingchemist Mar 25, 2026 +1
They are doing that pretty much nonstop on their own social media platforms. They'd have to be invited to be on fox news.
1
DantifA Mar 25, 2026 -1
Only acceptable reform is abolishment.
-1
Patsanon1212 Mar 25, 2026
A congressional minority hinging a (partial) shutdown on abolishment is lunacy. They should run on this in 26 and 28, though.

“DEMs now adding water to ice” is all I read
