Not certain if the shooter is the evicted person or someone opposing the eviction, but whatever, the warnings to schools and parents in the area have met with all kinds of technical issues, as the shooter remains free.

“Technical issues” always seem to show up right when people actually need the system. At some point they’ve got to start doing real-world drills, not just ticking a box on a spreadsheet.

Quite often the technical issue is the cops scream shit over their radios and expect every other civillian to have their exact same experience, because they fundamentally lack theory of mind.

PORTERVILLE, Calif. (KFSN) -- Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux confirms a Tulare County Sheriff's Office detective was shot and killed during a confrontation in Porterville.
Deputies were serving an eviction notice near Brian Lane and Newcomb Street around 10:40 a.m. Thursday when shots were fired.
Authorities say the suspect, identified as David Morales, born in 1966, is barricaded inside the home and believed to be armed with a high-powered rifle. Multiple shots have been exchanged.
One deputy was struck and taken to Sierra View Medical Center in Porterville following a tactical rescue but later died.
Sheriff Boudreaux says officials considered using a medivac helicopter to transport the detective to the trauma center at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, but the deputy's condition was deemed too volatile for air transport.
The detective leaves behind a wife who is four months pregnant.
Preparations are underway for a procession of the deputy's body from Sierra View Medical Center to the Tulare County Coroner's Office.
Several SWAT teams are clearing nearby homes as Sheriff Boudreaux stressed the situation remains extremely dangerous.
Boudreaux said the eviction was a final notice after the suspect failed to pay rent for 35 days and was expecting law enforcement to arrive.
He said Morales "laid in wait," and when deputies arrived to serve the notice, they immediately came under gunfire and called for assistance.
The detective who was killed was part of the group of officers who responded to help, with Boudreaux saying the deputy died around noon, roughly 60 to 80 minutes after the eviction process began.
Residents are urged to stay away from the area. Those inside nearby homes are asked to shelter in place unless approached by a SWAT team for evacuation. If contacted by officers, residents should follow all instructions, keep their hands visible, and avoid movements that could be perceived as a threat.
Crisis negotiators are now on scene, with officers from multiple agencies assisting. The California Highway Patrol has also deployed a helicopter equipped with technology to help locate the suspect.
Westfield Elementary, Sequoia Middle School, and Monache High School remain in a secure status, with students safe inside. Parents should monitor ParentSquare for pickup instructions, as buses will not operate and students will not be allowed to walk home.
Boudreaux also confirmed the office of Gov. Gavin Newsom has requested a briefing on the situation.
This is the first line-of-duty death for the Tulare County Sheriff's Office since December 7, 2007, nearly 20 years ago.

The guy who shot the cop was then ran over by a bearcat vehicle and died. Crazy story even crazier press conference. [https://youtube.com/shorts/ZRsktUfUVUQ?si=N2wjULDNnF3sfoMy](https://youtube.com/shorts/ZRsktUfUVUQ?si=N2wjULDNnF3sfoMy)

I looked up the address and saw the property was recently sold in December. My first thought was "Oh yea ... eviction gone bad". A deputy in Stanislaus Co was killed several years ago under the same circumstances. Desperate people are unpredictable

I'm not familiar with the eviction process so I'm curious why does the property being recently sold explain the "eviction gone bad" scenario?

Alternatively it was a yearly, they have 90 days. Dec-selling, March-shooting. 90 days

If it was a month to month lease, the new owner can terminate the lease with thirty days notice that he no longer wants him on the property, doesn't matter if you've been there 3 weeks or 30 years. the person is probably low income, and has been paying below market rate for an extended period and the transition is unaffordable.

This is not true, you still have tenants rights in california,
We also do not allow no fault evictions anymore.
60 days notice if the guy has been there for a year or longer, and must have a reason for ending the lease. Reasons are specified.

Thanks for clarifying. I didn't know houses could be sold with tenants/renters still living there.

If a lease is still active, they have to either do cash for keys or finish the lease and give them time to vacate

I suspect that, given the circumstances, the lease was no longer active

If they couldn't then nobody would rent properties and thus nobody would build apartments.

Shooter is a combat vet currently barricaded inside his home. He was being served an eviction this morning. Local police are not trained very well. They’ve shot a lot of tear gas into the house and he’s still in there. Vet also shot a female officer responding to the incident.

Damn, imagine the landlord how he/she must be feeling realizing they were taking to court and kicking out a goddamned psychopath. Lucky the psycho didn't decide to shoot them.

The article doesn't mention whether it was the evicted tenant doing the shooting, just that they were serving the notice and "someone in camouflage started shooting at them."
Could be someone living nearby that just saw an opportunity.
