It got her some kind of a large income and useless materials but what else? Everyone hates her. Nobody even respects her. All she became is a lonely, miserable, pathetic, self-loathing, growth-stunted woman who's turned into an empty vessel for whoever wants to abuse her. It took a massive middle finger toward the "James Bond" or "Jason Bourne" lifestyle and showed us how unglamorous and unfulfilling the life of an assassin really is. Particularly a villainous one.
Perfect example of a show that should’ve ended with s1

The show became a parody by season 3. It would be Villanueve in some fancy dress in some beautiful city yelling and making a scene
And then a couple eps later her in some quirky costume like a clown or in a onesie

They forgot how much Eve was the reason why the show was brilliant in the beginning.

Yeah Sandra Oh deserved so much better.

It was brilliant because of the chemistry of the two actresses, JC and SO, the brilliant writing of the lead writer and showrunner, Phoebe Waller Bridge, and her awesome foresight in casting those two. Sandra was the first to be cast by PWB, btw.

HotOne9364Apr 15, 2026
And the executives wanted her to cast a younger white woman instead of Oh. PWB told them to go f*** themselves.

You're right. The S1 finale already had closure for its characters.
And nobody can survive a wound like that for that long.

wtf are you two talking about... I just watched the whole season thinking it's self contained... ITS NOT
literally ends on a cliffhanger ffs
e- sorry I'm a little pissed, but generally it was a good season, not saying it was a waste of time or anything. The two leads gave great performances, the writing was a bit silly, but fun. Might at least check out season 2

Yeah. It’s quirky for sure but dark comedy s tend to be that way. Absurd and even silly. I thought the same of all the Bond movies, Star Wars, etc etc. Need I go on???

Thats got far more to do with her human interactions than anything else

The opening scene in ep1, season 1 was a breathtaking look into her mind.
How Villanelle attempts to emulate the smile of the man behind the counter and the way the little girl sees right through her to what she really is.

Patriot does it much better imo. But I did like Killing Eve, for the performances alone if nothing else.

Everyone hates Villanelle because she’s a loathsome human being with no redeeming qualities. The show has to make her lonely and sad sometimes to manipulate the audience into forgiving her amoral selfish behavior.

I enjoy a flawed character, but I didn’t find her interesting either. Mainly because I knew that no matter what the story would bend itself to ensure there would be no consequences for her or Eve.

She changed a lot throughout the seasons. Gained humanity, emotions and empathy by associations Carolyn, Konstantin, Kenny, but especially by her brilliant chemistry with Eve. She want to change, tried to and succeeded by the end. Also Martin the therapist helped she told Martin that she felt like shit, all of the time,…..touching scene is season 4, episode 7 I think, where he told her she needed to be vulnerable and not possessive to be in a relationship. She repeatedly throughout the show told Eve and others that she didn’t want to do it (the assassination part)any more…. She wanted to be free of The Twelve. Watch the very last episode of season 4, which imo, was excellent,,, and you’ll see the result of her efforts and Eves as well.

Villanelle became a beloved character ultimately. You can even buy Villanelle sweatshirts tee shirts and a lot of other stuff on line. If you watch more of the show, rather than judging by the first season, you might change your impression of her.

And another eye-opener, is season 4, episode 8. You might see drastic changes in the demeanors, personal growths, character arcs, etc etc of the two protagonists and the fabulous acting skills and chemistry of both actresses……but a warning, don’t watch the last 3-5 minutes of that episode if, perchance, you find yourself developing any attachment or kindly feelings toward them. JC and SO were spectacular !!!! You might even want to go back and watch it (the whole show) from the beginning. Just sayin.

It gets funnier when you think about how reality is quite the opposite of that. IRL villains as well as bullies usually seem to have the most fulfilling lives, particularly around people who simply do not know the full extent of what they've done in the past.
They're using their illgotten gains to create an advantage, which allows them in turn to create a wholesome standard of living. Get the money, nice and unsuspecting family, friends, etc. I think its the victims of these people who end up living miserable lives, but usually not the villains.

Honestly, no… as a lawyer I can tell you- criminals are broke. They have drug dependencies, they’re behind on their rent or actively unhoused. Unless you’re talking about high level corporate crime. Guys who break and enter or rob people or hold people up are broke.
I guess I forgot drug dealers. That REALLY depends. Even the ones that make money spend like an NFL rookie l****** w***** on rumspringa.

Yeah, people think that most middle school bullies grow up into investment bankers. They forget about the majority who become cops or petty criminals.

This seems like needless whataboutery. It’s possible to praise a TV show for a good first season without bringing up other content you prefer.
Plus, how are these examples relevant to OP’s point about life as an assassin?

not needless. the art of watching good tv shows generally involves not watching bad ones--for life is short.

Now now, Bourne had a great life with someone he loved partner. He was out of the game but they kept pulling him back in. We could use Bourne and the Equalizer to set our world right. But James Bond? That dude / dudette can go suck eggs. And the Mission Impossible person too
