You wanna know what my vision is? ...Dollar signs! Money! I didn't build this ship to usher in a new era for humanity. You think I wanna go to the stars? I don't even like to fly. I take trains. I built this ship so that I could retire to some tropical island filled with ...naked women. That's Zefram Cochrane. That's his vision. This other guy you keep talking about. This historical figure. I never met him. I can't imagine I ever will.

That's rhetorical nonsense. ...who wrote that?

So there's a dedicated discussion thread for some space launch but not for the US's invasion of Iran?
1
Cheesestrings89 Apr 1, 2026 +1
And not a thread for his televised tantrum later on.

This is Awesome!! These astronauts are Amaze. Fist my Bump! Also do you think they will take pictures of the alien bases on the dark side of the moon?

Shout out to the r/Apollo sub listnook.

Artemis really shouldn't be in Politics IMO... It should be stepping forward and moving forward and advancing the human race. Understand our government pays the budget, but this isn't a Right or Left thing..

Lorventus Apr 1, 2026 +1
I mean, could be that it's really cool we're going to the GD moon again and the mods are nerds who like space?
1
Ourobius Apr 1, 2026 +1
I remember when space launches were headline worthy news. Damn I miss those days.
1
herehaveaname2 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I was thinking this morning about how when I was a kid, the shuttle launches were broadcast live on network tv, each time.
1
gmen6981 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I grew up watching the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo launches live. Walter Cronkite on CBS was the go to for coverage.
1
Ourobius Apr 1, 2026 +1
Me too, which is how my entire first grade class saw the Challenger explode in real time.
1
herehaveaname2 Apr 1, 2026 +1
2nd grade for me! But the tv wasn't working, so we didn't get to watch.
1
DodgersChica Apr 1, 2026 +1
This is literally in the headlines though? They are linked at the top of this file. Also it’s on the major news sites. Here is NYT right now, for example https://i.imgur.com/gvO58tP.jpeg

It really is a bummer. The glory days of listnook are behind us. This place is so damn toxic now that it chokes the life out of any positive story. But I'm super f****** pumped for this mission!!! Let's reignite the passion to look up and beyond. Who knows what kind of awesome shit this could be a stepping stone for.

>You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a b****.” --Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 astronaut This is the [overview effect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overview_effect): from space, the sight of beautiful, fragile, lonely Earth renders a sense of universality. We're all ants on our precious island of life.

so the mods make a sticky thread for this (which is literally not politics) but will remove every post they can get that is critical of...certain things. interesting

I wish I cared, but its hard to when so much wrong is happening.
1
JnnyRuthless Apr 1, 2026 +1
Humans doing amazing things (like flying to the dang moon!) should be worth caring about. For the historically illiterate, so much wrong has always been happening all over the place. Maybe you just didn't see it until now. But so much awesomeness also happens, like sending 4 crazy astronauts on a moon launch. Like, this is the stuff that makes me happy to stick around for a bit.
1
black_flag_4ever Apr 1, 2026 +1
You know what's a terrible way to win someone over? Insulting their intelligence. We've been to the moon before. We've been there several times. It's still a barren rock. We don't have a working healthcare system. One of these things is more important right now and impacts my family a lot more. One reason is that I have a disabled child. I care about his future. So forgive me if I don't care about billions being wasted to go towards space adventures.
1
JnnyRuthless Apr 1, 2026 +1
Oh I'm not being condescending, I'm telling you facts. Not trying to win you over. I have kids, I care about the future. Science will never not be cool to me. Sorry you can't appreciate it.

Lucky devils, to be escaping the Earth right now. Best of luck for the mission!

I'm too scared to watch. I watched live in 86 and since then I get too nervous.

My undeniable excitement for this can't help but be dampened by how our "leader" is going to act like he built, launched, and flew the spacecraft himself.
1
lobmxxx Apr 1, 2026 +1
I mean, did you see his post today? He's already doing victory laps around, well, literally everybody: *“We are WINNING, in Space, on Earth, and everywhere in between — Economically, Militarily, and now, BEYOND THE STARS. Nobody comes close! America doesn’t just compete, we DOMINATE, and the whole World is watching. God bless our incredible Astronauts, God bless NASA, and God bless the Greatest Nation ever to exist, the United States of America!”* I can't imagine how seething he is that one of the four astronauts is -- uh-oh -- Canadian! Better not mention that part out loud.
1
BobbalishBobbus Apr 1, 2026 +1
Right? I just want to enjoy something good for a change without him shoving his ugly orange face in everything. I couldn't enjoy our olympic hockey teams victories because of his bullshit and i just know he's gonna chime in on this with something stupid.

cheetah7985 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I discovered the show For All Mankind a few months ago, and just fell in love with it. It's an alternate history show where Russia landed on the moon first, and because of that, the space race just continued on and escalated more and more. Season 5 just released and in the show >!it is now the year 2012 and there is a full blown base on Mars.!
1
AngelSucked Apr 1, 2026 +1
I remember being a little kid and watching with my mom, waiting for Apollo 13 to reappear so we knew the astronauts were alive, and cheering when teh capsule appeared. I can JUST remember the moon landing with Armstrong. Like you, I have really enjoyed this stuff.
1
FeRooster808 Apr 1, 2026 +1
The only reason we have all this now is because of China honestly. It's the same thing. I like to imagine what things could be like if we all worked together to explore the universe just for the sake of, you know, curiosity and science. But it increasingly seems humans don't operate that way and the great filter is winning theory. Thanks for coming to my old, jaded Ted Talk.

awesometakespractice Apr 1, 2026 +1
> Season 5 just released this is awesome news, i didn't even know! and i play p**** with the guy who plays wayne cobb, he didn't mention it so i guess his character isn't coming back lol

lSleepster Apr 1, 2026 +1
I love space as well, but humanity isn't leaving the solar sphere. We are water laden meat bags that evolved to live in specific conditions. Space travel is not one of those conditions we will strive in. Not to mention the biggest problem of all, the tyranny of distance. Space is so mind boggling big to us it may as well be infinite.
1
GogglesTheFox Apr 1, 2026 +1
Even leaving our orbit is almost impossible. The idea of a manned ship to Mars is more or less a death sentence. Unless there is a GIANT leap in technology, it is nothing more than buzz talk.

The-Jerk Apr 1, 2026 +1
notwithstanding martian soil is poisonous to animals and plants, full of perchlorates

TheCleverestIdiot Apr 1, 2026 +1
I'm not sure I agree considering our ancestors lived in the ocean. Without lungs. Now, I don't see proper colonies happening within my lifetime or in the next generation's, but if the will is there the tech will likely follow.

Toadfinger Apr 1, 2026 +1
The Artemis program is solid. Designed by the real NASA. I hope Trump NASA knows what their doing.
1
thosearecoolbeans Apr 1, 2026 +1
The worst-case-scenario conspiracy theorist in my brain sees this launch happening at the same time as the Supreme Court nonsense and the Iran war supposedly "winding down" and just starts running wild with what-ifs. I really really really hope this launch goes smoothly and the Astronauts complete their mission safe and sound.
1
MountainMan2_ Apr 1, 2026 +1
The Epstein class can do whatever they want but unless they can alter the orbit of the moon, this is unrelated. Frankly, the ruling class cares so little about space exploration and sciences funding that I doubt they would have even remembered about the artemis program long enough to create a scheme around it. Good thing, too, because if they actually noticed NASA, they'd probably defund it again to add polar bear fur to their gold, child-size fleshlights.
1
wrosecrans Apr 1, 2026 +1
We're talking about NASA. If the Trump administration ordered them to try to time the launch with a specific court date, it would take three years for NASA to write up the necessary documentation on what a court is. For better or worse, they pretty much go at their own pace.
1
Mr31edudtibboh Apr 1, 2026 +1
The conspiracy theorist in *my* head wonders if the female and black crewmembers won't get pulled at the last minute so as not to hurt someones fee-fees.
1
godsenfrik Apr 1, 2026 +1
Pulling female, black or Canadian crewmembers will leave a crew of exactly one person.
1
Mr31edudtibboh Apr 1, 2026 +1
You and I know that, a certain person in the White House might not care. They certainly won't be tolerated or invited there after the mission.
1
volcanopele Apr 1, 2026 +1
The launch windows have been known well before hand, for months now, and are based on orbital dynamics, not on real world events. Now... the other way around, these events taking place at the same time as an already planned launch... I still don't believe it but is more likely.
1
197gpmol Apr 1, 2026 +1
[This site](https://apolloinrealtime.org/11/) archives all of the Apollo 11 radio transmissions and syncs it to mission control and astronaut footage. It's one of my favorite background noise sources. (Works better on desktop where you can scan through the timestamps easily.)
1
Smoremonger Apr 1, 2026 +1
yeah there's something soothing about the little beeps and sort of calm telegraphic speech!
1
shadowdra126 Apr 1, 2026 +1
When is launch?
1
pudgybunnybry Apr 1, 2026 +1
Looks like 6:24 pm EDT right now.
1
thatoneguy889 Apr 1, 2026 +1
That's just the start of the launch window. The end of the window is 11:24 pm EDT, so it can launch any time in that five hour period depending on whatever the circumstances are.
1
pudgybunnybry Apr 1, 2026 +1
Thanks for clarifying.
1
volcanopele Apr 1, 2026 +1
thank you for the clarification. I keep thinking these are instantaneous launch windows but maybe that's only for launches to the ISS?
1
BilboBiden Apr 1, 2026 +1

pudgybunnybry Apr 1, 2026 +1
It would be absolutely hilarious for someone to go live with a "Syke nerds!!"
1
PrometheusLiberatus Apr 1, 2026 +1
I know right! That's what I'm half expecting given today's reputation for shenanigans.
1
pudgybunnybry Apr 1, 2026 +1
Not sure the order of hierarchy but is it possible Trump can order NASA to not launch because things don't appear to be going his way in the birthright citizenship hearing? I could see him being a petulant baby about it lol
