Discussion - What mainstream songs have bells in them?

Posted by BigBlueMountainStar

I was listening to a Spotify random radio, starting with Insomnia by Faithless, and Summer Sun by Texas came on, and the bells started and it made me think, what other songs have some cheeky bells in them. I don’t mean Christmas songs that have jungly bells, I mean full on chimes, but in main stream music.

Those have both been around for over 40 years now and I’m *almost* to the point where I can tell which one it’s going to be when the bells come on the radio.

There's a slight tone and tempo difference in the bells that I finally was able to pick up on. In the 90s, I used to listen to a radio station that would play both, and it was fun to learn to guess which one they were playing.

Rush - Closer to the Heart. Both tubular bells and concert bells/glockenspiel, I think

If we're counting the glockenspiel, "Little Wing" by Jimi Hendrix is also on this list.

The vibrophone in sound and color by the Alabama Shakes scratches this itch for me.q

Very few songs evoke such deep emotional response for me as this does. It’s an existential treatise disguised as an exquisitely composed and performed sonic and lyrical rollercoaster.

Rock lobster - B-52s (and a bunch of their other songs).

Grave Digging by The Classic Crime has some nice cowbell in it.

This seemed to be a thing in the 90s. Alongside Summer Sun, there’s Maria by Blondie and then Lady Marmalade with Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim etc. The song technically came out in 2001, but I feel it’s close enough to the 90s it was probably inspired

They aren't super prominent but there are some bells and chimes toward the end of You Never Give Me Your Money by the Beatles

It may not be particularly mainstream, but Jimmy Eat World's "On a Sunday" starts with a nice melody on bells.
