Especially if it’s not weekly release, like someone says “oh S2 E7 was so good” but I remember all of the stuff that happens just not which episode, the more I binge the ‘worse’ it is
A symptom of "binge watching" - IMO the worst way to watch TV.
Now, one episode per week, the rest of the time filled with online discussion, speculation, and dissecting the next episode's promo - that's the stuff.

Yep, this is exactly why I decided a while back that when a show does whole season dumps right up front—I pace myself through and stretch it out. Maybe not one episode a week but one every few days or so. I savor them a little and mull them over. I found that when I did whole season binges in a weekend or something then I retain a lot less and the episodes all run together.
You can definitely notice it in the discourse in various shows. The Pitt for example is bad about this. I watched season one as it was releasing week to week originally. Lot of people came later as the show built hype and they binged it between seasons to be ready for season 2. Everyone who binged season one all at one time seem to remember jackshit about it, and sometimes seemingly remember a completely different show. Everyone who was there week to week the first season has managed to remember what this show is.
Everyone who binged the Pitt S1 also are having a hard time hanging on week to week and have been it complaining in the sublistnook that S2 is slow and different. When it’s been the same as it was. Only thing that changed was the viewing speed.

Yes. It’s worse with shows that have more than 13 or 14 episodes. The fewer the eps the more I can remember and which ep it was in

yeah this is why shorter seasons work better for me too. when you got 22-24 episodes in season everything just blurs together into one long movie basically
i can tell you exactly what happened in each episode of something like True Detective season 1 but ask me about specific episode from The Office and im completely lost even though ive seen it like 10 times

Yes.
It even happens in a show where the episodes are very different from each other. Trying to place a scene in its episode, or remembering an episode by season and number, not always easy.
I've been watching classic Doctor Who, and I remember some episode titles and many events, but with 27 seasons it's a bit much to recall some details.
For example, they are in a pub, there's a dart board. The Doctor picks up three darts and throws three bullseyes. Casually, just tossed them quickly.

I only really remember specific episodes if it's a show that I'm *super* into because that probably means that I've listened to podcasts or watched youtube reactions or had discussions online about it. If it's something I'm watching more casually then I almost never remember a specific episode. And if it's been more than a few months there's a decent chance I forgot a lot of the events that happened as well.

The fact that people bust out episode numbers and sometimes even episode titles blows my mind. I often can't even remember which *season* things happened in let alone specific episode.
