Do you guys write your own music?

Posted by Agitated_Minimum506

Not a karma farming post, just a late night thought. I’m in my school band and i only know of 3 (myself included) people who have made or do make some music at all. i’m just wondering if people just play music or actually write stuff sometimes. maybe a dumb question. it doesnt have to be good (of course, up to interpretation and all music has an audience), or released, but like songs with a set structure that are played the same or almost the same every time (so like jam stuff and improv doesn’t count, just for this question) i know everyone has different lives, but for some reason i just imagine most of the people in the school band just play the music and don’t make anything their own, and lots of people could be missing out on the joy of making your own stuff. maybe im crazy. sorry for the rant if this is dumb.

I try to write, but I'm my own greatest critic and no matter what I write I feel like it's just a copy of something else and so I throw it on the pile to burn with the rest. The funny thing is that if you got me loaded up and locked me in a room and said I can't come out until I make an album, I could absolutely lay down an album (I can passingly play guitar, violin, mandolin, piano, bass, synths, clawhammer banjo, tenor banjo, and I'm sure a few more). What I lack is incentive and/or purpose. I don't have some story that I am compelled to tell.

very real. recently wrote something for my music production teacher and hated it all the way through, despite all the positive comments from friends and family i let hear it. i still can’t get into it, and at this point im producing it out of necessity for progress rather than actual enjoyment. rough life out here lol.

I write lyrics and have since I was like 14 but I have no intention of doing anything with them and a lot of them are lost to time.

there is a war in Iran and the economy is collapsing due to the idiocy seeping from the white house and this is what you're thinking about? but to answer your question, honestly most people in school band just focus on playing, not writing, because that’s what the environment is built around. There’s usually a smaller group (like you) who actually make their own stuff, but a lot of others either never try or don’t stick with it since writing music is a totally different skill. You’re not crazy for thinking people might be missing out. it’s just that not everyone is looking for that same creative outlet.

i use music as an escape from all that so i feel my question still has some validity, but i do understand the sentiment. thanks for your answer nonetheless, and i hope you have a good day :)

Hey kid, think about anything you want. Other people do not get to decide what's important to you.
