This might be a bit of a tricky question, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. I’ve been collecting movies since I was a kid (I’m 30 now), and back when I was a teenager, I had this mindset where I felt like I *had* to own every movie I saw in the cinema. It almost felt like an obligation, like if I experienced it in theaters, it deserved a spot in my collection. So whenever something I liked came out on DVD or Blu-ray, I’d buy it immediately, usually at full price, and often rewatch it right away, even if I had just seen it a few months earlier.
Over time, though, my collection has grown massively. And now that I’m older, I sometimes sit back and look at it and think, “There’s no way I’m ever going to rewatch all of this.” Don’t get me wrong, I’m still happy that I own these films. They represent different moments in my life, and there’s definitely value in that. But it has made me much more hesitant about buying new movies or TV shows on physical media.
It also doesn’t help that so many newer films and series, especially streaming exclusives, aren’t even available on physical formats. That’s frustrating in its own way, because there are quite a few streaming titles I genuinely love and would absolutely buy if they were released on Blu-ray or DVD. But since that’s often not an option, it’s kind of forced me to rethink my whole approach to collecting.
At some point, I had to let go of that old mentality of needing to own everything I enjoyed with the idea that I’d revisit it someday. Realistically, that’s just not going to happen. Instead, I’ve started to take a much more relaxed and intentional approach. These days, if I really like a film, I don’t rush out to buy it right away. I wait. Sometimes a year or even two.
If I still feel like rewatching it after that time, and I come across it at a good price on Blu-ray, that’s when I’ll pick it up. And honestly, that change has made a big difference. The rewatch feels more meaningful, more like something I’m choosing to experience again rather than something I’m doing out of habit. Plus, it’s surprising how much prices drop over time, you can get some great deals if you’re patient.
Overall, it’s been a shift from collecting out of obligation to collecting with intention, and it’s made the whole hobby feel a lot more enjoyable again.
I went through similar phase with collecting everything I liked, now my apartment looks like abandoned blockbuster lol
Waiting definitely works better - I picked up Dune Part One last month for like 12 bucks and it felt way more special than if I grabbed it day one. Plus you really know by then if it's something worth keeping on shelf or just something that was good once

I've had a very similar experience with "The Marvels" last week, I own every single film of the MCU because, well I started it as a teenager and the obligation to own everything at this point feels heavy even if I don't really enjoy it as much as I used to when I was a kid. I hated that movie, but I picked it up recently and honestly? I liked it. It was around 5 euro's so that helped and I don't really have bad feelings of owning it now.

That’s one of the marvel films I’d pay to not own

Yeah, to be fair I own everything of them. And I haven't really liked that much post-Endgame, but ehh that's the collector mindset for you. I hate having to "miss" something when I started a collection.

I buy the movies I like. I do not go to theaters. What's weird is it seems prime, tubi, plex, filmrise, dark matter, and some others have all of the newer b movie stuff that doesn't make it to theaters or other paid apps. By the time they get there the movies are discounted so when I buy them on sale they are even cheaper. I find I'm buying a lot of older movies in 4k and Blu ray than buying new ones.

I'm playing the waiting game too, and very rarely do I feel the urge to actually own anything these days. I'm mostly sticking to films by certain directors and actors, along with franchises, solely because I started collecting them few years ago. With all the streaming exclusives and reboots, it's become a hassle to maintain a collection that feels complete (for instance you can't have a shelf with all the films made by David Fincher. That section felt complete few years ago, but it won't be the case now). Abandoning it altogether seems like a better option. I'll be left with some cash, at least. Also, prices have gone up like crazy. Earlier, if you were on the fence about getting a steelbook or something similar, a sale would bring it to the vicinity of 20 bucks or lower. Nowadays the full retail price is north of 60 bucks, and it just isn't worth it unless you have enough disposable income.

I used to do the same thing but have massively cut back. I'll still buy certain movies. Still nice to have physical media when i want to watch something and none of the endless streaming services have it available.

Newer titles that I just saw in the theaters I’ll wait almost a year before wanting to get them, or find a really good sale, but I don’t need to own a new movie I just saw.

Well whatever or whenever it is, I seem to miss it!

I tend to wait, but I'm really more in the market for criterion collection stuff or special editions, I'm not really buying the standard released ones at this point unless it's something I'd really like to have on physical media.

My collection has reached the unwieldy amount of over four thousand discs, so I've tried to cut down on my purchases by picking up only new releases of films I *loved*, or excellent special editions of classic films by the likes of *Criterion* or *Arrow.*
I used to pick up every superhero-based movie, but I have managed to resist picking up the last few pieces of slop sent out by Marvel. So, that's progress, I think. 😁

Most of my dvds came from the bargain bin at Walmart. There was ALWAYS 1 or 2 gems in there - you just had to dig for them. Sadly those bings are gone now, and I boycott Walmart in general too

I prefer to wait. Especially for boutique releases. I very rarely buy a movie at release. It's cheaper to get them later.
I also only buy about 8-12% of the movies I see. Those are the ones I like enough to rewatch.

Yes because the days of buying on release date are over. I remember buying season DVDs for $30-35. A few years ago I bought the entire Game of Thrones blu-ray set for $55.

There's tiers to the movies I buy. If it blew me away I'll buy the 4k no questions. If I loved it, I'll put the 4k on my list and wait to see if it goes on sale or if I get the urge again to just buy it. If I liked it enough, I'll buy the regular blu ray if I see it on sale.

Yes, especially with movies I actually love. I don’t collect everything, just the ones I’ll revisit.

I've come to the point where I ask myself if I really want to watch that movie again right away or not. If not then I don't buy the disk. It will show up on a streaming platform eventually.

I wait until it hits about 10$. In this day and age it takes maybe 2 years.

I used to but an investment in Plex, a decent NAS and UPS, why do I need to mess about physical media?
Just a lot of fuss and an attic full of DVDs and BD I’m never going to go and hunt for except my Chinese martial arts movies

I did the same, had about 7 dvd sleeve books, got rid them for Plex and a couple hdds. Storage costs are almost never worth it.

I only own about 30 films. And each of those 30 films are ones I rewatch. Imo they're the only ones worth buying.
