Yeah I know you guys might be the biggest fans, and before you thrash me please hear me out. Maybe I’m not alone in this. And just letting you know, this is mostly going to cover the negative aspects for me.
So I started watching the show (2015) for the first time a day ago and got really hooked. I loved the grounded nature and a superhero who actually feels closer to humans than other sups. Overall it’s been a good watch till now (currently on S2 E5), but I also can’t ignore the fact that the show has been inconsistent in quality and engagement episode-wise. Let me explain.
So I think the first 3 episodes of Season 1 were literally the best up till now, and the show hasn’t matched that level again. But that’s okay, the show still holds up. Then comes episode 9, and from that point onward, episodes 10–12 felt pretty dragged and full of fillers, which made it boring compared to how engaging it was before. Now fillers aren’t always a problem when balanced with good plot progression, but straight-up dragging feels forced. It could have very well been a 10 episode show. Even now, Season 2’s initial 3 episodes were so good, especially when Punisher comes in, and the face-off was really cool. But again, I felt bored throughout episodes 4 and 5. It’s almost like it’s still good but boring at the same time when there seems to be little to no plot progression.
Also, regarding Season 1, as much as I felt Wilson Fisk was a well-written character and a good villain, I also felt like he was at times allotted a bit too much screen time. There was a point where I was sure he had more screen time than the protagonist. He has a really good backstory and is a strong character overall, even with an emotional side, but some things were off-putting for me. For example, the insane number of one-on-one conversations he had, which were all like crazy 10 minutes long, and many of those didn’t feel meaningful to me, so again it felt boring.
Also, till now I have noticed the show has a slightly repetitive nature. For example, literally every episode has a scene where Daredevil hops out of nowhere, beats up some guys, and tries to extract information, and the same thing happens in almost every episode. He sometimes beats up and questions the same guy twice, like one of those arms dealers.
This one is less relevant, but I also felt the show had limited the number of angles the story was running through, which made it boring at times. Like in the end, it’s mostly either their office where they meet, the bar, or his house, and other times he is beating up criminals. They could have shown them traveling, maybe introduced a few more characters with less focus on the same people. As much as I love Foggy at heart, at one point I got bored just watching him speak in the same joking tone.
Last but not least, I really don’t know the reason for this, please tell me, but why the hell is Karen Page lowkey annoying? I think something’s wrong with me, but I don’t know, you tell me.
Overall i still feel its a good show 8/10 till now it has its highs and lows, its like at heart I still wanna binge it and I know I will but my minds kinda bored in between too (I dont have attention span issues)
Every 1st season of the Marvel Netflix shows has this weird issue where it feels like it should've ended around episode 8-10 and then it just keeps going. I would not be surprised if they originally planned for 8 or 10 episodes and then were all mandated to expand to 13. Luke Cage is probably the worst example of this as it completely goes off the rails after the main antagonist dies with like 5 episodes left. I feel like it's the least noticeable with Jessica Jones but it's also been like 10 years since I watched it. Season 2 of Daredevil gets better about this and then imo season 3 of Daredevil is a straight up masterpiece. One of my favorite seasons of television ever. Really curious to see what you'd think of Born Again season 1 because it is a total f****** mess.

I don't love the story line with The Hand and Elektra but it's fine. To me season 3 was so good and the first season of Born Again was so messy that it definitely makes me look back on the original show with rose-tinted glasses. Born Again season 2 seems to be headed in a much better direction and the flashback episode from this week really made me want to rewatch the OG show from the start for the 5th time.

Well, yeah.
Most shows suffer from that though some handle it better where as some don't even try and throw in obvious filler plotlines.
Daredevil is.. fine, has some issues but not a disaster overall.. wouldn't mind if the writing was little tighter but so far, so entertained. 😄

Although they were overall very good, I found that the Marvel Netflix shows suffered from having mandated episode counts, which sometimes led to a feeling of certain things being dragged out. *Jessica Jones* suffered from this in particular, while *Iron Fist* padded out the show with the Meechum family plot lines.
In subsequent seasons, Netflix did trim episode counts a bit, and that helped them feel more tight. I think Daredevil still maintained the 13 episodes throughout, though.

Almost all of them maintained 13 episodes throughout, the only seasons that didn't have 13 episodes were Iron Fist season 2 and The Defenders (which is only 2 seasons out of 13 in total)

I could have sworn that some of the later Jessica Jones seasons had less, but you’re right. Shame, that one probably needed it the most.

Yes If they can cut out on episodes without sacrificing the plot its always a better choice

Different directors each episode contribute to that. I just watched the defenders and noticed some wacky camera angles and wondered who directed it. The director from BSG Razor. Made so much sense.

Idk there's a lot of shit i didn't like about the Defenders but I will always love a good dutch tilt lmao

It’s not just Dutch. It’s filmed within diagetic space and treats the camera as if it’s really there (albeit “invisible”, not an omniscient observer. Crouching next to a doorway to fit both people in frame like someone is hiding worked for BSG because the whole show was delivered like we were flies on the wall sipping the tea, not an audience. The answer isn’t flat wides for everything, you just need OTS.

Well, with so many writers over the years, it's bound to be inconsistent. Not every run could be a knockout.
The first real high was Miller in the '80s. That's the run that took DD from a title that was on the brink of cancellation to a hit. Denny O'Neil followed Miller up and kept things going until Miller came back for Born Again, then Ann Nocenti took over, and that was a fairly good run. A lot more well regarded in hindsight, but the JRJr. art was probably the draw at the time.
But after Nocenti, the 90s were horrible to DD. the book fell so far, it was, once again, on the brink of cancellation by the late-90s. It was the lowest selling Marvel legacy title, and only a couple thousand copies shy of their cancellation line. Karl Kesel never does bad books, but he wasn't what people were looking for. Then, they gave control of the book to Quesada and Palmiotti under the Marvel Knights imprint, they brought in Kevin Smith, and DD was a book people wanted to read again. The buzz from Smith gave them the ability to give the book to some indie guy, and DD was cemented under Bendis as an important Marvel book. Ever since, DD has had important writers and long runs. Brubaker, Waid, Soule, Zdarsky, the list keeps going. Every other book is down to their 5 and done policy, but DD keeps going strong. Sure, it still has its ups and downs, but DD is one of the last consistently important titles at the former House of Ideas.

A couple things.
I agree with you on season 1. It's a strong 8/10 show that has a couple 9/10 episodes, Matt does kick the c*** out of some random guy every episode because they didn't have faith people would keep watching if there wasn't at least a little bit of action. Fisk does have a lot of screentime, but it's mostly because it's his introduction. He's definitely a duel protagonist and not an antagonist, and that's the case the whole show.
Season 2 is known to be a bit of a drag, pretty much anything with the punisher is great but they switch plotlines exactly where you are and the rest of the season is a bit of a drag.
Season 3 is the best season of the show easily. All the problems with season 1 are fixed and it's more streamlined. There are episodes that slow down, there's no fights that are pointless and it doesn't drag at all.
Karen only becomes more important and by season 3 she's basically a co-lead, so if you dislike her now sorry to say she's not going anywhere.

it's a terrible copy of a good show, which was the original daredevil on netflix.
they attempted to make it a continuation, but it really isn't. it feels like a totally different show to me.
still a decent watch, just disappointing we lost the netflix versions for this.

i must have missed the part about foggy, otherwise this literally could be either show they are talking about.
i still argue that the original is a good show.

I’d argue that parts of your life taken as snapshots would feel like different stories - and if they didn’t, you wouldn’t make a good subject to have a book or movie about your life. Stories are about change, so expecting new iterations to feel a lot like past iterations is asking for stagnancy in the story.
Many later tv seasons feel like different shows with the same cast (person of interest, Buffy, supernatural).

Wait, what? The 2015 Daredevil IS the Netflix version lol. There wasn't any "original" Netflix Daredevil before that - the show you're talking about literally is what OP is reviewing. Are you maybe thinking about the Ben Affleck movie from 2003? That wasn't Netflix at all, and definitely wasn't better than the Charlie Cox series.
