Does anyone else have a tiny, "insignificant" daily habit that completely shifts your mood for the better?

Posted by mei_maid_20260308

I red waking up just 15 minutes earlier to sit in complete silence with my morning drink before checking any screens. No phone, no news, no to-do lists. It felt unnatural at first, but now it acts like a buffer zone for my brain and my days feel so much less chaotic. What’s that one small thing you do in your daily routine that just makes everything else easier to handle? I'd love to hear some of your habits!

A little shower talk. I love a nice shower at the end of the day. I always talk to myself in the shower. Sometimes it’s happy stuff. Sometimes it’s an argument. Sometimes it’s sad reflecting. It’s like a little therapy session. Then I wash it all away.

The 'wash it all away' part hits deep, it's like a mental reset button.

That’s a very good take on it. I’m a visual person I just kinda picture it all going down the drain. It’s also why I love a good storm. I clean the house and open the windows and let the rain wash away my hardships. Kinda gives me a clean slate.

The 'wash it all away' part hits deep, it's like a literal reset button for your brain.

Making my bed first thing. It’s such a small thing but it makes everything feel a little more put together right away. Also stepping outside for a few minutes in the morning, something about fresh air just resets my brain before the day starts.

I ask my partner what his favourite part of the day was, before we go to sleep, then he asks mine. Its a positive way to end the day and I feel like we wake up in good moods when we do this.

I do this with my kids at the dinner table. Always a good way to get some insight into the day.

My family did something we called "Good/Bad" that was supposed to spark conversation at the dinner table (and I'd say it worked). We'd go around and each say what the worst thing that happened to us was, and then we'd go around and say the best thing. Let us air out some venting and celebrate the wins. (Mom's rule was you could skip having a Bad but you needed to come up with at least one Good, however small.)

We do “sweet/sour” which started as a silly named thing to get our kids to sort of eye roll but play along - but now they remind us if we havent asked them what their sweet or sour was. I love when my ten year old son comes home and says immediately “I have…(mentally counts)…THREE sweets today!”

I got rid of alarms and wake up when my eyes open, ie, when my sleep cycle ends. Don't go to sleep again. Earlier it was a bit difficult to manage but now I feel I've got a great body clock and I do wake up consistently around 6-6.30 am. Then I go for a walk. I feel less tired now My partner has noticed that when I'm unaware of the time, for eg after an afternoon nap, I am able to tell the exact time (± 10 mins) almost 90% of the instances. Idk if that's related to my habit or not, but it seems like a cool power to have.

Do you have a job that requires start times? I'd love to be able to wake up when Im ready but I fear oversleeping.

Waking up when you're ready is such a luxury. My alarm goes at 5.20 am, and I'm constantly exhausted, as I always seem to be in deep sleep mode at that time. I've just got a few days off work now and it's so wonderful waking up naturally, even if it's just half an hour later

Not really, I have to show up at work around 11 so got plenty of time around. But mornings are beautiful! You could start by chugging some extra water before sleeping so the pee urge wakes u up lol. Gradually you'll start waking up around that period. Don't take it as scientific advice though..

If you sleep for 8 hours typically, you could try going to sleep say 9 hours before you typically set your alarm to give a buffer and leave the alarm set.

Jazzercise!! I love it, finally found a workout that doesn’t feel like a chore and there is a really lovely community of women who go. I’d love to try the getting up and spending 15 minutes with a hot beverage and no screens or lists though! Thanks for the inspiration!

A few things I've figured out and am still figuring out: - leave my phone downstairs when I go to bed - if I feel overwhelmed just get out and piece of paper and write down my thoughts. I can often then just toss it straight in the bin but the feeling of peace remains. It doesn't work if I do it on my phone so I'm trying to carry a little notebook around.  - go outside in the morning or at least stare out the window for a bit. Get some sunlight exposure. - to unwind for bed, I've recently started to try focusing on my body for a bit. That means identifying any aches & pains and then either just noticing them, or finding a stretch or something to do about it. It's quite centering and relaxing, and means I feel better in bed.  - if I get home and feel super overwhelmed, I put my noise cancelling earbuds in and don't play anything. I just sit with the silence for a little bit.

I stopped sleeping with my phone in the same room, wake up without an alarm, and don’t use screens for the first half hour I’m awake. I just sit and listen, sometimes to the birds, sometimes to the silence of a snowfall, sometimes listen to rain, and sometimes during spring and fall I witness the sunrise. Been at it three years now and been fortunate enough to only need an alarm maybe 15 times. But by far the best habit I have that improves my mood is to give my boxer dog ten minutes of deep scritches and pets. It bonds us. He’s the bestest boy and deserves all the love.

Read Two Hafiz poems before any internet and getting out of bed to make coffee. One poem each from “The Gift” and “A Year with Hafiz”.

I sit every morning for a few minutes before work and pat my cat while I finish my coffee. She loves it and I get a few minutes of peace and nice pets before i go to work.

for me it’s opening the curtains/windows as soon as i get up. something about fresh air + actual daylight makes my brain stop acting like the world is ending for no reason lol. it’s such a tiny thing but i really do feel off when i don’t do it.

making my bed first thing in the morning. sounds dumb but something about starting the day with one tiny completed task just tricks my brain into thinking i have my life together

I frequently set my alarms for 30-45 minutes before I actually have to get up so I can have that time to myself. I'll read a book, listen to music, or just talk to my cat about a dream I had. Having that positivity and relaxation while I'm waking all the way up for the day puts me in a good mood and I feel more equipped to deal with the rest of the day.

20-30 minutes of yoga and pushups after I get out of bed every morning. Takes discipline. Better than coffee.

Taking at least an hour of rest in the evening after an intense academic session. I watch YouTube, fold my clothes, or go for a bike. Once I am done, I feel refreshed to study and finish my assignment. I noticed significant improvement in focus and engagement with my study materials, and I feel like I have an optimized study session at night
