Does casting for snape require this level of hate?

Posted by desuna2502

Do i agree with the casting? No. Its obviously not accurate and regardless of race, its very difficult to match up to Alan Rickman's portrayal. And its not just Harry Potter. personally, its always irritating to me when live actions are made with innacurate castings. And i personally dont even understand why its necessary to MAKE another live action? i understand when it comes to a series like Percy jackson because the movies were terrible and they didnt even complete it, but when you have a highly successful franchise, what is the purpose of attempting to do it again, when irs already been done perfectly. But the amount of hate this man has recieved. its diabolical. the amount of casual racism everywhere. hes even revieved death threats. is this really necessary ? its a fictional story not a biopic ? and again, WE ALREADY HAVE A PERFECTLY MADE LIVE ACTION ? So what is the purpose of all this hatred? if we dont like the casting we can always rewatch the movies ? again, i did not agree with the casting but i do not understand this intense reaction from people.

The extreme vitriol is insane. Nobody should care so much about fictional characters that they send death threats. Let me make that clear. With that being said and looking at it objectively, it’s a ridiculous casting choice. At some point trying to be super diverse just looks like pandering. It’s almost comical that out of all the characters, they chose f****** snape to be black. It makes no sense if the show has any interest in being faithful to the books at all. It’s just an unnecessary race swap. No shade to Paapa as it’s not his fault at all. It’s just a dumb choice full stop.

Most people just give a simple comment that he shouldn't have been black because of the book describing him as pale/yellow skin and greasy black hair and people start accusing them of being racist just to start fight. All the escalation like the death threats don't actually have anything to do with the role, it's just deranged people using it as an excuse. I don't agree that they should change anything to go against the book descriptions, but it's not something the majority of people actually make a big deal about. The ones who have a problem with it are just the loudest. On paper, Hermione and Snape are the two easiest to change... The students are fairly diverse so I understand their wanting to do that with the teachers too... but I don't think the people involved with the show really thought ahead to what overt racist themes certain plotpoints will take on now that they've changed them. I bet nobody would've gave it a second thought if it had been somebody like Slughorn, Sprout, Madame Hooch, or Rita Skeeter. It's almost like they chose these two specifically to make a splash and differentiate the show from the movies as quickly as possible.

I just find it funny that sevral of the book lines about snapes nose and greasy hair make Harry seem kinda racist. Also they went from a well dressed but kinda unkempt, to a very shabbily dress but well groomed

Not that it doesn’t exist, and it would be incredibly hard for the actor, but as someone with a casual at best interest in this show I haven’t seen any because im not looking at these spaces. Log off and it will be easier for you.

There's just too many people in this world for there no to be any hate. There's no sense getting mad about it, your're just adding more voices to th topic of Sbape being black which doesn't help. You're just adding fuel to the conversation

Because it is blatantly obvious that he is the token black actor. Hollywood will never allow an all-white main cast, this poor guy is the result.

The death threats are absolutely unhinged 💀 like imagine being that pressed about a TV show that doesn't even exist yet. I get not liking casting choices but sending threats over fictional characters is some next level terminally online behavior Plus we don't even know how this dude's gonna perform yet - could end up being incredible for all we know. The original movies aren't going anywhere so people can just... not watch if they're that bothered? 😂

I think a lot of people are really just attached to Alan Rickman, which is understandable, but this reaction is still insane.

And yet Alan Rickman was such a farcry from the character in the books. Hell, Snape is supposed to be 31 at the beginning of the story. I for one am excited to see an age-appropriate Marauders generation. Their youth is part of their tragedy, for all of them: James, Lily, Sirius, Remus, Peter, Severus... They were all barely adults when shit went down. :(

I don’t understand since I haven read the books. What is so wrong with casting a black actor in this role ?

Snape was a white teenager getting involved in the nazi "blood purity" cult led by Voldemort, which was designed to exclude and eliminate all people with muggle parentage from the magical world. Snape CAN'T be black. It's like asking why Black Panther can't he a white guy.

I get that this sound a bit too much and quite frankly sometimes fandoms can go way too far but… …studios are exploiting these people and selling them the same story a bit differently to make money so they should expect a highly critical audience that will lash out at any detail that is not canon. It’s unfair for the actor though…

If he's a good actor, which I've heard he is, then I agree with it. Otherwise, I don't care at all

Just remember, Harry Potter is for babies, and if you have an emotional response to casting, you are a baby and a loser

I feel like trawling his profile looking for ammo to attack him because his opinion about harry potter upset you...kinda makes him sound right.
