This is what a single millionaire can do and still live a comfortable life. Billionaires have absolutely no excuse and should be taxed out of existence.

I can't wrap my head around the idea of having money like that and *not* using it for good.

Because you’re not a sociopath, and that’s practically a prerequisite to reaching the Epstein billionaire class or staying in it if you’re a nepo baby.

I was a bookworm as a kid and still enjoy reading, and if I had that kind of money, I would be using to to fund, open, and renovate SO MANY LIBRARIES.
26
elebrin Apr 2, 2026 +12
I don't know what I would do. I would start by researching the best way to reach as many kids as possible and help fund teaching the arts. I... am very dismayed by lack of arts education among today's youth. I have nephews and cousins who can't draw, sing, dance, play instruments, write creatively. They don't know any music or art history. They don't even know very much about current popular books, movies, and music so they have no artistic connection to their own generation. Artistic outlet is a core means of human expression, and it seems like we are intentionally trying to deny that to a large segment of humanity.

It's a hoarding illness. Also power hunger. It's not the number of dollars, it's that it can buy people and influence and governance, not just things.
7
Beard_o_Bees Apr 2, 2026 +7
> the idea of having money like that and not using it for good You've also likely lived 'among the poor'. You probably know what it's like to worry about providing basic needs for you and/or your family. Many of these assholes, as much as they like to portray themselves as being 'self-made', come from generational wealth - and if not that then at the very least have never lived life without a saftey net. It's more common to see people, like Dolly, who've lived at least a part of their lives as a regular person be genuinely involved in meaningful philanthropy - often to benefit the same communities they grew up in. I wish there were more like her.
7
CaptainLawyerDude Apr 2, 2026 +11
Dolly grew up dirt floor poor if I remember correctly. She, more than many, likely knows how difficult life without money can be.
11
AnarchyOnTheShortBus Apr 2, 2026 +5
I'm reading one of her biographies now, poor is an understatement. We're talking 8 kids and counting in a 2 bedroom shack.
5
dust4ngel Apr 2, 2026 +3
normally, you get huge amounts of money by stealing the value created by workers at an industrial scale, meaning you had to be a sociopath in order to get rich, which also means you have absolutely no interest in helping children you don't know. obviously, dolly parton did not get her money this way.
3
nooby_goober Apr 2, 2026 +2
They are using it for good! Good for the shareholders.

CrimsonPromise Apr 3, 2026 +1
Or having that much money and just peacing out of society. Just you, your family, a homestead in the middle of the countryside. Growing your own vegetables, raising your own livestock, hunting, fishing and foraging on your own land. No meddling with politics, no buying of private jets and super yachts to destroy the earth, no manipulating of stock markets so that 5000 people lose their jobs but your net worth increases by 0.1%.
1
mammalmaker Apr 2, 2026 +17
If you spent $250,000 dollars per day and didn't earn any interest or other income from it, it would take you 9,337 years* to spend the amount of wealth Elon Musk has. This shouldn't be allowed to happen. Socially or legally. Edit: 3,408,005 days of spending $250,000/ day to reach $852 billion.
17
dust4ngel Apr 2, 2026 +4
> This shouldn't be allowed to happen can't believe you are against trillionaires buying democracy. do you hate free speech? /s
4
scobey Apr 2, 2026 +2
That's not true. It's closer to 9337 years than days. Realistically probably 2-3 thousand years.
2
mammalmaker Apr 2, 2026 +1
Whoops that's what I meant. That's the math though, not 2000-3,000 years.

Pretty abhorrent hey

OrthogonalThoughts Apr 2, 2026 +6
She probably would be a billionaire if she didn't do so much good for people instead. She's the example they should all aspire to. Like I never understood things like Elon wanting people to love him so he does twitter trolling and shit when he could have like, just replaced the bad water pipes in Detroit or something instead and would have been loved by everyone for so long. He could have just hired a bunch of local workers, brought in equipment and supplies, start doing the work, and pay whatever daily fines that'd come up for "illegal civic work" or whatever and still been a billionaire and also insanely popular. But no, he decided to go down a K-hole and make nazi salutes instead. F***.
6

yeah but think rationally please. one day I could be a billionaire. i dont want to vote for taxes on myself!!!

I mean TBF they make donations all the time to places in exchange for having the place be named after them... I doubt they do many donations without recognition but thats not what's happening here
-2
sam_hammich Apr 2, 2026 +6
Sure, but we could use more "transformational" donations to essential medical institutions instead of things like already-billion-dollar universities and stadiums.
6
cosmograph Apr 2, 2026 -3
Yeah as someone who grew up near the Zuckerberg-Chan General Hospital, I’m not sure what these people are talking about I do agree that tech billionaires should do more, and Dolly Parton is inherently a more likeable figure (especially since she didn’t make her money from destabilizing society), but they are clearly engaging in philanthropy at at least the same monetary level

THIS is the right way to get your name on a building. PS - Was always a fan of Dolly Parton ever since I found out about her Imagination Library. Great mission.

shmargus Apr 2, 2026 +49
The thing you may not know about those books is that not only are they free, but they are also really *good*. The books you get at any given time are well matched to the kids developmental phase, they're always really popular with the kiddos, and they're not all just 40 year old classics. Hands down better books than we can find at our local library. She must pay her staff well because it's a premium product.

Even those crazy gilded age tycoons who they literally designed the monopoly guy after, (think Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Carnegie) built useful stuff that benefited society. There are all sorts of schools, parks, libraries, bridges, public buildings named after them because even though they were ruthless and responsible for a lot of suffering, there was a better understanding of the responsibility that rich people had towards society. I’m not saying they were doing it out of the goodness of their hearts either. They knew that this was the way to make their legacy last. They benefited, millions of Americans benefited. Now rich people are basically like the dragon in the hobbit movie. They take shit that isn’t theirs, pretend they earned it, sleep on it so it can’t benefit anyone else, and everyone else has to live in fear of the few times a year they come out and act dangerously and erratically with complete and utter disregard for anyone else.
20
work4work4work4work4 Apr 2, 2026 +3
> There are all sorts of schools, parks, libraries, bridges, public buildings named after them because even though they were ruthless and responsible for a lot of suffering, there was a better understanding of the responsibility that rich people had towards society. There was also just more straight up legitimate fear of what under classes could do to them. You don't see the near total destruction of the various socialist, farm labor, and other movements until around WW1 with the Palmer Raids and lots of questionable political acts still on the books today to threaten and quell dissent by imprisonment if deemed necessary. You can basically draw a line between these erosions, the subsequent erosion of workers unions at large, the increasing undermining and infiltration of unions themselves by outside power brokers like political machines and organized crime as they struggle to replace the level of solidarity and collective action they had prior. People laugh and poke fun at the eat the rich memeification, but the underlying idea of preferring love to fear, but clearly needing to create one or the other in the rich to avoid escalating cycles of abuse seems abundantly clear with the level of demonstrable historical relationship over a long time line. Even Dolly being one of the greatest people while being a millionaire and a shrewd businesswoman to boot makes tons of sense when you look back at the anti-corporate, pro-community kind of redneck Appalachian values that existed much more broadly before the area was hollowed out by political and corporate cooperation, and that she's always done her best to represent.

Carnegie's labor practices were garbage, but at least we got some goddamn libraries out of it.
2

I think there are still something like 900 Carnegie public libraries open in the US. It's a significant number.

My kid looks forward to books every month from Aunt Dolly. My nephews in Indiana used to get her books, but their governor decided he wasn’t going to fund the states portion of the venture, and instead is implementing (or so he says) a new program with religious based books. My SIL was so upset because they are too young to understand why Aunt Dolly sends us books and not them.

And don't forget that you can do tate to the Imagination Library by simply getting a license plate. I pay an extra like $20 a year just to have my Dolly Parton plate.

Don't personally care for her music, just not my thing. But she always seemed like a genuinely good person.

It's great to have stories like this, both to serve as an example for the future and to be able to uplift the people who deserve it while they're still with us. It's good for us as individuals to celebrate the good in other people.

She is unapologetically Christian, but doesn’t seem evangelical. Using your wealth and power to help others and to make the world a better place is far more Christian than beating people over the head with a Bible.
17
dust4ngel Apr 2, 2026 +2
> She is unapologetically Christian to clarify, "christian" in this context means "thinks we shouldn't imprison jesus and laugh at everything he's ever said", which is what that word normally means in the US

Dolly Parton is the only woman that could win the state of Tennessee in an election, even running as a Democrat. She is beloved in TN, enough she could overcome the partisan divide, in at least her home state. No promises outside TN.

West Tennessean here, in a heartbeat.
4
lostatsea_again Apr 2, 2026 +19
Truly amazed that people don’t get this. Conservative Christianity (any religion besides, maybe, Hindus) would keep women from acquiring any true power. I want a female president in the US as much as anyone else but if the dems run a lady in the next election then they’re taking a massive risk, because of the engrained and subconscious hate that exists. They’re 0/2 up against the orange moron. They best choose very wisely next time, if there is a next time.   I do wish that Dolly had been Pres, though.

Thank you. I’m aware of what fundamentalist, religious folk get up to.  Just saying that voters have voted in female, Hindu, prime ministers in more than one country in the past.  As have Christians;  just not in one country where they really, really should have.

lol. I never mentioned Norway nor did I mention Tanzania. I am not very familiar with Tanzania and their current issues and or problems. I do know that Norway solved the issue of homelessness to a very large degree. You may want to address the poster who claimed that Hinduism seems to be the only decent religion. Clearly, he doesn't know how the BJP has radicalized the faithful in India. Any who weird way to deflect, i guess??
0
lostatsea_again Apr 2, 2026 +1
You might want to use something called comprehension.  I never said that Hinduism was a “decent religion”. I said that they would have less of an issue electing a female head of government. Keep up.

You’re making my point for me.  Also, Christine Kangaloo is the head of state and is not elected. What you should have attached is Kamala Persaud-Bissesar, two time P.M. of Trinidad and Tobago, a Hindu who was elected by her constituents and is the head of her political party. President Kangaloo was appointed to her position; not elected.

Why aren't more following her path to national treasure status? She's giving her way into the country's heart & soul and we love her for it

There’s just something about being obscenely rich and powerful that turns most people into selfish evil ghouls. I’m not particularly religious anymore, but the Bible was right about the love of money (aka greed) being the root of all evil.

I remember reading about the hospital remaining, but don’t think I’d heard about a donation. It was clearly enough to just alter the lives of so many kids. She’s something special.

If only the rest of the rich could have this mentality. Dolly who started from nothing truly knows what an impact this will make

She is actually the saving grace of East Tennessee. As an East Tennessean, I would not be surprised to hear that she is secretly Christ because she is right up there with Mr. Rogers in terms of absolute good for the world they've brought to people.

My 3 year old loves Dolly Parton because of the Imagination Library. Whenever he gets a new book, its his favorite for at least a few weeks. His birthday is coming up, and he is excited to get a “happy birthday little one” video from Dolly, just like he got last year. Dolly is a national treasure.

Rich people please take note!  You will either be celebrated, forgotten, or ridiculed as long as the human race manages to exist. The extent to which that actually happens is all about our generosity with what we have available.  Leave your mark on the world in the best way you can. Thus people will remember you.

cynicism comes naturally to me sadly and it has me thinking..... "how much you wanna bet they still charging out the ass for most every patient there" Don't hospitals generally overcharge for health care? just kinda seems like ti would work out better to give the money directly to the families who need medical care than it is tog ive to medical care to decide which families should get it.

Why would a private institution need donations, unless it isn't a private institution?

I’m not a fan of Dolly’s type of music. But I have mad love and respect for her as a person.
1
NewEnglandRoastBeef Apr 3, 2026 +1
I can imagine she tried to do this donation quietly. Now that it's public knowledge, her response would be something to the effect of "awww shucks, I was just doing something nice! No need to mention it!". She casually brushes off incredible acts of generosity and kindness as if she had just held a door open for someone.
1
LittleSodaPop13 Apr 3, 2026 +1
And this is why people still love her. Dolly has always used her money for the greater good and she still does.

>And her fans will congratulate her for being so kind for donating pennies on the dollar while she breaks bread with right-wing trash. She isn't a good person. She's playing the role of a good person. >virtue signalling >Can't wait to see how this makes her a saint girlboss wow look at the billionaire actually do something worthwhile >real talk I do not like this b**** or her vapid music or her lack of activism and this does not cut it for me. Very interesting to see how these comments differ from the other post about a blonde woman donating to charity
-6
zapdoszaperson Apr 2, 2026 +16
Let's just ignore that Dolly has been runninga charity foundation for almost 40 years, has donated hundreds of millions of books to children, has scholarships, 100% tuition programs for employees, and regularly chips into any natural disasters that effects Tennessee
16
section111 Apr 2, 2026 -7
Did what I said give you the impression that any of that should be ignored?

Nah but that comment section sure is ignoring it.
