Don Davis' Matrix trilogy is an opus near-par with John Williams' Star Wars and Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings, and it should be recognized as such

I genuinely believe it is at least in the same conversation as John Williams' Star Wars and Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings even if not fully on par with those masterpieces. It is as quintessentially "its movie", as sonically distinct from the chaff of other scores before and since, and just good music as those scores. Even as a child I knew this music was too damn perfect for the films it appeared in - the same feeling I felt when hearing Williams' Star Wars or Shore's LOTR. Imagine my surprise as an adult when the discourse on these scores is damn near dead silent. Well I'm here to try to turn you on to the wonderful music that comprises the Matrix Trilogy. Say what you want about the films themselves, but the music never failed. Anything you like about John Williams' Star Wars prequel music is represented here in a similar but wholly distinct flavor. While it may not reach the thematic highs of Shore's LOTR (as arguably Williams' doesn't either) it has the spirit. It even has sanskrit, just like Williams' Prequel scores. Just take a brief listen if you don't believe me. It’s the perfect score for its movie, and very intelligently crafted, but it’s not one that I’d listen to by itself (unlike Star Wars or LOTR).

I have to strenuously disagree (with the not listening by itself part, obviously), but music is ultimately subjective and no choice anyone makes with regards to it could ever be wrong. If you listen to Star Wars and LOTR by themselves you have a friend in me.

I listen to the matrix reloaded soundtrack regularly and love the actual soundtrack music. Those horns!

If its that good it would be recognized as such but its not and you are wrong. You know what I remember the score from? Star wars lotr Harry Potter even but vaguely the matrix.

Star Wars LOTR and Harry Potter are hard bars to clear, and I specifically delineated its quality from those. I simply think Matrix deserves to be in the same conversation. For how good it is, to see it talked about so little... it makes me sad.
