I could easily see it coming out in a few years that there was never even an attempt to make any deals, and that it was all pure market manipulation

We know that **now** “US will not lift Hormuz blockade until deal made” **Translation**: Friday, right after closing bell. Remember how he used to screech about Pelosi? Pepperidge Farm remembers — that every accusation is a confession with these clowns. Edit: I forgot about TACO Tuesday. I don't think it's pure market manipulation. The world just realized Iran is an emerging world power and they realized the US can't do anything without sacrificing lots of american troops where there is no public support for. Trump is stuck, he can't pull out because then he'd tanked the world economy for nothing and he can't go any further or he risks being the president that started vietnam 2.0. I'm certain in Iran everyone now is motivated to get nuclear weapons since his ending a civilization comment, he will be remembered as the president that turned Iran into a nuclear superpower.

Apparently, Iran does not need to make a deal. They shut down the straight to punish the western nations supporting the conflict. In response to refusing to make a deal the US has decided to take over for Iran and shut down the straight. Best of all, the US put ships in the Gulf to shut things down, and there is no discussion about how they are supposed to leave. Somehow this is all supposed to make sense. It is for dementia chess.
48
ChromaticDragon 4 days ago +40
It makes a bit more sense than that. That war doesn't, mind you. There is no justification for the war whatsoever that passes a smell test and holds water. But the US blockade of ships to/from Iranian ports could be seen as way to strangle Iran. Iran can disrupt shipping and cause lots of pain for many countries. But with no other players involved, they could still export their own oil and generate revenue. The US blockade may be an attempt to kill that revenue cold. Now... this adds even more pain to the rest of the world. It does nothing to help supply in the short-term. But if... and I do mean if... this leads to Iran simply collapsing and whatever remains chooses to be nice and peaceful, then maybe in the long-term this gets things more "open". So it's not without *any* sense. It's just... well... predicated on a number of assumptions regarding speed of collapse, regime change and eventual peace... kinda like the entire war.
40
lluewhyn 4 days ago +22
It may or may not work. But it makes more sense than "We'll kill Khomeini and hope the entire regime folds over like a house of cards despite them deliberately organizing their regime for that not to happen" or "We'll threaten to bomb their civilians until they roll over".
22
Pressure_Chief 4 days ago +2
As long as the US blockade does not trigger a larger scale conflict by attacking basically any other country’s vessels that go through the straight.
2
JAWinks 4 days ago +21
I get the impression the Trump is envious that Iran can charge tolls on this one important stretch of shipping, so he also wants in on that action
21
rabidstoat 4 days ago +6
Which is why I am waiting him to start talking about seizing the Panama Canal again, so he can charge the tolls. The Canal, though, is a canal, and it takes work to run ships through it and maintenance to keep things working, so it makes sense that tolls can be charged there. The strait is just an existing body of water.
6
Settra_Rulez 4 days ago +26
I think you’re fundamentally misunderstanding things. The US blockade stops ships that interact with Iranian ports. It’s meant to cut off the revenue Iran draws from oil exports. Some 90% of their GDP. A ship leaving port in UAE could sail through the straight unimpeded by the US.
26
Namell 4 days ago +4
Losing that income of course hurts Iran. Question is how long blockade has to last before current Iran leadership collapses? Cuba has been more or less embargoed for 60+ years. It has not collapsed yet.
4
Codex_Dev 4 days ago +2
Cuba is actually rationing gasoline right now. A good portion of their island doesn't even have power because Venezuela and Russia were providing them with oil.

"punish the western nations supporting the conflict" what western nations are supporting this war? every other nation i've seen speak about it says they don't support it. only the fascist pedophiles in the white house support this dumb illegal war
21
VanbyRiveronbucket 4 days ago +12
If you have an American base in your country, you are supporting the war, .. this is how Iran sees it.
12
brapsniffsniff 4 days ago +4
They are not blockading the strait they are blockading iranian ports so they can't export anything. That is why iran is unhappy about it. The US can and will let ships traverse the strait if they aren't going to an iranian port.
4
OSUfan88 4 days ago +4
I mean, it makes sense to me. Iran blockaded everyone but their own trade partners from the straight. So the USA blocked that. It’s a much bigger issue for the straight being shut down to Iran than it is to the USA. That’s an immediate 50% cut to their economy.

It's because he thinks like a bad businessman where you have a monopoly and can force customers to use a shit product. He doesn't understand how to run a business with competition, let alone a country. The US doesn't have a monopoly on the world, it's just a preferred partner. Make too many demands and other countries will suffer the inconvenience and cost of finding alternatives.

IMF said Iran war could trigger global recession. Europe is 6 weeks away from running out of jet fuel. Southeast asian countries are calling on everyone to conserve energy. I guess this is winning.
74
Tutorbin76 4 days ago +31
While not much can be done for jets right now, all this is helping accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels. There has been a massive surge in EV cars and trucks in most markets, as well as renewed (heh) interest in solar, wind, and BESS power generation. Don't get me wrong. This situation is still bad, but this is one small silver lining.

6

With the current technology they aren't feasible. I don't even think they have a road map for long haul commercial planes. We would need some kind of breakthrough in battery technology to achieve the energy density needed.

I’ve seen this before… and most of u have at some point in your life. I saw it when my son was little. He would f*** around and we would warn him that he would get in trouble and he would continue doing it until the inevitable “go to your room, you are grounded” and then he would give this dumb look like he didn’t understand what was happening to him. You are seeing that with our toddler in chief, wait until the world puts so much pressure on the US that there will be no other option but to impeached him (that can and will happen) and he will have the same stupid look that my son gave me trying to understand what happened.
