Huh, so now we're nominating very serious journalists in comedy categories? Guess that tracks with this wacky world we're living in smh

not nominated, entered for consideration

I'm not sure everyone understands that this is an article about Emmy *submissions*.
76
comics0026 Apr 16, 2026 +29
Well that confusion would make sense, when was the last time you heard a story about something being submitted for an award instead of being nominated?
29
Sensitive-Cover-5687 Apr 16, 2026 +20
Specifically regarding Dropout? [Last year](https://www.listnook.com/r/television/comments/1ju0lsx/dropouts_emmy_plans_very_important_people_lands/), and [the year before](https://www.listnook.com/r/television/comments/1cnfxsx/dropout_jumps_into_emmys_with_game_changer_and/).

Apart from what people mentioned, I remember Better Call Saul not submitting

When the world is a joke, comics become journalists and journalists become comical.
109
bisploosh Apr 16, 2026 +7
The Daily Show is a good example of this. Jon Stewart is a better journalist than most “real” journalists.

dellett Apr 16, 2026 +9
I mean the Bear won a ton of awards as a comedy. Anything is a comedy as long as it’s not more than a half hour apparently.

Great show! I thought the season built on itself really well. I was way more into it by the last episode.
2
clycoman Apr 16, 2026 +2
I don't think they've officially renewed, which sucks because of the cliffhanger ending.
2
kaltorak Apr 16, 2026 +3
i was really impressed by their dramatic acting chops. Vic and the whole cast did a great job.
3
planemissediknow Apr 15, 2026 +724
I think Vic is absolutely hilarious and deserves all the praise, but there ain’t no way she gets in, IMO. Good press for Dropout I suppose, if the campaigning money spent isn’t absurd, but trying to run her against Jean Smart and Lisa Kudrow seems wacky
724
FantasticJacket7 Apr 15, 2026 +537
They're not trying/expecting to win. Just getting nominated would be a massive boost to Dropout.
537
Ink_Smudger Apr 15, 2026 +18
Yeah, over 7 million people watched the Emmys live last year, and obviously a lot more looked at the nominations. Not only would it be a lot of publicity for Dropout, but if even a tiny fraction looked into what it is and subscribed, that'd be a win. (Though, I'm not overly optimistic on Emmy voters being willing to recognize Dropout.)
18
Mender0fRoads Apr 15, 2026 +7
A $50,000 spend would require roughly 7,000 people to pay for a month of subscription (or 3,500 for two months, or roughly 900 buying an annual subscription). That’s about 0.1% of the Emmy TV audience. Seems reasonable.
7
planemissediknow Apr 15, 2026 +77
Yeah, that’s why I caveat it by saying as long as they don’t spend an insane amount of money on this, it’s probably good business. I’d just maybe try to run her in talk show host if they can swing that (or even just the show) in a far more likely spot to be nominated
77
shpydar Apr 15, 2026 +111
Didn’t Sam Reich admit he spent $50,000 on their Emmy run last year? Considering many studios drop millions that doesn’t seem like an insane amount for an Emmy run.
111
Appollix Apr 15, 2026 +194
He found it in a gym bag in the park. It was $100,000 which he invested and turned into $16,000….. which went to the Emmy campaign.

Dropout could put out a merch line of just birds and they'd easily make up that 50k and then some. Hell, if they sell some of Brennan's American girl doll shoes they could fun a huge press tour.
30
GrumpySatan Apr 15, 2026 +20
Remember the merch challenge in One Year Later? In 3 hours they collectively made $25,559. That single challenge probably paid for the last emmy campaign. Many Youtubers and Streamers have mentioned how their merch sales bring in more money then the content itself. They can make millions from merch.
20
oopsydazys Apr 15, 2026 +4
Dropout already has merch. $30k in 3 hours is not sustainable though, that made a bunch of money because it was super limited and the people who are gonna see it and jump on it are diehard fans.
4
GrumpySatan Apr 16, 2026 +5
?? I know it has merch. The point of my comment was they gave us a window into how much the merch makes compared to the emmy campaigns. The 3 hour limit was set by Sam after-the-fact for the purpose of measuring points. Only one of the items was actually limited and sold out in 3hours (and it made the least money, a flat $4,000). The other two items (which made over 2x/3x the same amount in the same time) did not sell out in 3 hours and continued to be on sale (and one is still on their shop 2 years later). They just didn't reveal how much money they earned after that. Obviously any merch sale will decline over time but that is why they release a new products regularly.
5
shpydar Apr 15, 2026 +9
I would totally buy a ‘Brendan’s Big Book of Birds’ using [their animated series style of artwork](https://youtu.be/jhRryubIBi4?si=A_FGpnDr1Sau_Lnr) It would be a series of facts about birds devolving into a thesis on the evils of late stage capitalism.
9
Abnuconu Apr 16, 2026 +3
If it doesn't feature the roseate spoonbill I ain't buyin!
3
DazzlingCapital5230 Apr 15, 2026 +5
Yeah it’s huge publicity to even get nominated for an “off the grid” network.
5
hallumyaymooyay Apr 15, 2026 +2
What does that money even go on?
2
shpydar Apr 15, 2026 +7
Publicity. Reich and cast did a lot of interviews during their 2025 Emmy run. A good chunk of the money goes to lodgings and airfare
7
reganomics Apr 15, 2026 +9
It was a question on the special they did for Sam wasn't it? 50k if I remember correctly. That might have been a previous season though and the number has gone up
9
Anionan Apr 16, 2026 +2
Putting aside the fact that it’s very obviously not a proper talk show, talk show host is not a category anyway. And variety show (which Dropout are running VIP in) will be merged with the talk show category, so no difference.
2
wrosecrans Apr 15, 2026 +10
And even just getting coverage of the campaign in Variety doesn't have zero ROI. It forces some of the old-school parts of the industry to take Dropout much more seriously as a player doing stuff worthy of being reported about. Even if they are kinda B-Tier and they aren't winning awards, just a few years ago College Humor really wasn't even on the radar as an entity that would soon be able to stage a credible awards campaign and be taken seriously.
10
jbaker1225 Apr 15, 2026 -5
There’s a 0% chance they get a best comedic actress nomination. The only chance they maybe have of getting a nomination is for best game show, but I wouldn’t bet on it. This article only really exists because Sam Reich is a rich nepo baby with connections who will do favors for them.
-5
Sensitive-Cover-5687 Apr 16, 2026 +3
No, it exists because Dropout pays a lot for their PR team to get them articles like this.
3
FantasticJacket7 Apr 15, 2026 +5
You seem butt hurt.
5
ConfidenceKBM Apr 15, 2026 +73
Vic is hilarious but VIP just does not click with me at all... It almost seems like more of a showcase for makeup/costumes than comedy
73
wrosecrans Apr 15, 2026 +83
I think there's something smart in Dropout being willing to do stuff that is weird enough to get a rabid fanbase but not click with others. It's a very different strategy from the classic broadcast network "something for everyone" safe approach that makes pretty bland stuff. Personally I don't get the D20 hype, and I'm not that big on Make Some Noise, but I am one of the people that VIP clicks with. Sam's happy to take my money every month as long as there's one or two show's I can't get anywhere else. Since it's not advertising based, he doesn't make any extra money if you watch VIP or I watch D20.
83
tfhermobwoayway Apr 16, 2026 +6
That’s very true. I like how them going mainstream hasn’t stopped them from being weird. Too many things lose all their edge once they reach a bigger crowd and start catering to mainstream audiences. Everything sort of tends towards one idealised piece of perfectly mainstream, universally appealing media.
6
LazerSturgeon Apr 16, 2026 +8
> I'm not that big on Make Some Noise Make Some Noise for me is very hit and miss depending on the guests.
8
Olobnion Apr 15, 2026 +27
I don't care for most episodes, but episode 3x3, "Archimedes and Ollie", was great. And 1x6, "Tommy Shriggly", has its moments.

2
neilrookie Apr 16, 2026 +9
love VIP but IMO Comedy Bang Bang the TV show executed this concept better
9
TheBatIsI Apr 15, 2026 +6
It's hit or miss and the new season feels really miss for me. The Season 1 stuff felt pretty funny with my favorites being the Alien and the Host's Grandmother. But then after that and the latest season in particular felt like it was all about the costumes as you said and I didn't really find it funny.
6
scottyLogJobs Apr 16, 2026 +16
Look, I love dropout. Make some noise can be hysterical and Game Changer can be legitimately *brilliant*. But the thing about every single show basically just being improv, is that 1/1000 people are decent at improv. Even on dropout, not everybody is that funny. There are people who will go on make some noise or game changers that will get one forceful exhale out of my nose per episode, if they're lucky. And even among their heavy hitters- and they have some of the most brilliant naturally funny people I have ever seen- they're still going to have their sketches where something just doesn't really work that well. And a little too often, VIP makes a full episode out of a single bit by one of those not-that-funny people, or a funny person doing a bit that just doesn't really work that well. A few of them were good. It is great up against the garbage on youtube, but to put VIP up against other great pre-written tv comedies is silly. Now that I'm thinking about it, I think it's strategic because you really can't come up with that many *great* female-driven comedies in 2026. I can think of many actresses in comedies that amazingly outshine Vic in VIP (and I love Vic, she's hilarious in make some noise)... just not many this or last year. Although Kaitlin Olson should take it over her any day for sunny. My point being that they probably recognize the comedic drought and think they might have a faint shot of just getting nominated, which would be a great promo for them.

CptNonsense Apr 17, 2026 +4

I didn’t really get that one. Gamechanger is funny but VIP is just… I’m not really sure what it is?
4
ConfidenceKBM Apr 16, 2026 +2
I really thought I was gonna get raked for that post but it seems like people generally agree. I'm not sure what it is either. Like I could get the joke if it were just little sketches but it's a LONG show
2
Gh0stMan0nThird Apr 15, 2026 +3
Yeah the first few episodes were funny but it started to taper off a little bit. I haven't even watched any of the recent ones.

I believe Ollie and Archimedes would like a word.

Pitiful_Mouse_5225 Apr 15, 2026 +2
I wish they would skip the whole setup at the start and just go straight into the interview.
2

I like seeing them find the characters.
3
Korwinga Apr 15, 2026 +2
In a lot of ways, the makeup/costuming portion reminds me a lot of Face Off, which was a competition reality TV show about Makeup Artists (not to be confused with Face/Off, the Nic Cage movie). I really enjoy the behind the scenes bits where they talk to the makeup artists about the costuming.
2
tfhermobwoayway Apr 16, 2026 +1
Man, Face Off was cool. Is it still running?
1
uncomfortable_fan92 Apr 16, 2026 +1

1
hallumyaymooyay Apr 15, 2026 +4
Stupid question perhaps but how does it cost money for them to campaign? Are they paying for articles in the media promoting her or where does the money go?
4
GrumpySatan Apr 15, 2026 +24
Very unsubtle bribery, basically. For Your Consideration campaigns are mostly spending money on gifts for the voters, throwing them lavish parties or "networking events", hiring PR teams to help run them, and paying money to trades to give them shout outs (like this article itself).
24
tfhermobwoayway Apr 16, 2026 +1
That sounds a bit fucky. I hoped the Emmys wouldn’t stoop to this level. Why can’t they just judge the shows based on their objective quality?
1
idkalan Apr 16, 2026 +1
Because there's too many submissions to warrant becoming nominees and since every member of the Emmys including past winners each get a vote, most voters will only vote if they've heard of the nominee.
1
dubblix Apr 15, 2026 +5
Sam let it go that he spent something ridiculous campaigning for it. I think he said 50k but I don't remember for certain
5
BelowDeck Apr 15, 2026 +7
He also said that 50k was relatively small as far as "for your consideration" campaigns go.
7
hallumyaymooyay Apr 15, 2026 +2
I get that but on what? Where is the money spent?
2
MyManD Apr 15, 2026 +6
There are 27,000 voting members so honestly just sending each of them a nice, funny postcard could cost $50k. Of those voters there are dozens of categories a peer groups. Say the general comedy bloc is about 1,000 members, the $50k could be a nice, funny postcard and, I don't know, a framed picture of Sam.
6
Metalmind123 Apr 16, 2026 +3
Honestly, $50k is an huge amount for an individual person, but peanuts compared to big corpos that sometimes spend double to low triple digit millions on their Emmy campaigns. Granted, that is for a whole bunch of individual campaigns, though even there it's reportedly often $500k+ per individual promotion campaign.
3
Sensitive-Cover-5687 Apr 16, 2026 +1
This article, for one. An article about Emmys submissions isn't something you get unless you pay for it.
1
ZandrickEllison Apr 15, 2026 +1
Can the campaign someone as a guest star? Seems more likely that way.
1
smleires Apr 15, 2026 +1
We know they’ve probably spent at least 50k. This is based on their Samalamadingdong episode
1
rippa76 Apr 16, 2026 +1
In comedy, no less. I get most of my news from VIP.
1
unculturedperl Apr 16, 2026 +1
In Samalamadingdong, Sam said around $50k (2025?).
1
tfhermobwoayway Apr 16, 2026 +1
The problem is that it’s a specific, unique kind of humour that only emerged on the Web. It doesn’t really fit the traditional Hollywood model of comedy. So I don’t think the Emmys people are going to vote for it.
1
Badass_Bunny Apr 16, 2026 +1
Especially because as much as Vic is genuinely funny that entire show format rests on the guests to make the commedy.

Not only is he funny, he's incredibly smart. He's been in this industry for ages and has incredibly progressive views on how television and film should be run at a studio level. Having a bad-ass dad would do that to you. (Robert Reich, the former U.S. Secretary of Labor under Bill Clinton)

Krombopulos_Micheal Apr 15, 2026 +5
No Comedy Bang Bang? Pfffft
5
Strawbalicious Apr 16, 2026 +15
I'm still always surprised to see just how popular and successful Dropout has grown to be, and even more so that CollegeHumor actually successfully pulled off a rebranding that I thought was an insane decision since they'd reached almost household-name status as CollegeHumor.
15
Puzzleheaded_Fix594 Apr 16, 2026 +9
A lot of that is Sam and co being extraordinarily effective at leveraging short form video content to promote the platform. He has a great interview with Gianmarco Soresi where he talks about how he does it. There's a reason why so many people that subscribe to Dropout are in the 20-30 year old range.
9
ChampsMissingLeg Apr 17, 2026 +1
Can attest to their social media game. That’s how I became aware of VIP, Make Some Noise (shout out to the Noise Boys), and Game Changer. When I devoured everything they posted, I had absolutely no problem paying like $7 bucks a month for it to see more (and there is soooo much more). So, yeah… it worked!
1
HypoManicCrimeSpree Apr 15, 2026 +11
Dropout is putting our pretty good content and these shows are top of my list. Wish them luck.

28
Demerzel69 Apr 15, 2026 +59
They've got so many shows, dude. Game Changer/Make Some Noise/Um, Actually/Dirty Laundry/Smartypants/Gastronauts/Crowd Control/Parlor Room Plus semi-regular releases of new stand-up/one man/woman shows get added under the Dropout Presents umbrella. How many more shows do they need? That's not even counting all the old CH content and other Dropout shows that have ended but are still available to watch. It's a lot, dude. I don't even watch D20.

Yeah, as someone who doesn’t watch D20, it’s still super value for the price they charge.

Demerzel69 Apr 15, 2026 +7
I wish I had the attention span to get into D20 but my simple ass needs the visuals to go with the stories. That said, I actually really enjoyed Never Stop Blowing Up and it was also the first one I ever attempted to watch. Maybe I just got spoiled cuz that one was really fuckin good and funny. Great setting/genre and cast.

Starstruck is pretty great if you haven't tried it and want something with similar chaos energy.

Demerzel69 Apr 16, 2026 +2
I did try that one! I was enjoying it but fell off it eventually. Also tried Mentopolis which I think was a Kids on Bikes one like NSBU.

D20 is at least in manageable chunks. Critical Role is like a thousand f****** hours of content :D
5
jabask Apr 16, 2026 +3
Yeah, Critical Role is a whole other level ,but TBH a big part of why I find D20 hard to get into is that even the ~90 minute episodes are so daunting to me. I realize people just pause it, but I like watching whole episodes of things, and I don't do background TV. An only modestly visually interesting show cut to feature film length every ep is just not my idea of good TV.

Critical Role X One Piece crossover event when?

They need shows that aren’t just short form improv games
15
Simple-Motor-2889 Apr 16, 2026 +1
As someone who doesn't really like improv, Gastronauts is one of my favorite shows on Dropout, and I wish they had more shows like it. Using the Dropout cast as judges is, IMO, a great way to expand out into new types of shows. It puts the spotlight on the contestants but still has a bit of the Dropout cast making some jokes. Crowd Control I think does a great job of this as well by putting the spotlight on the audience and gives the comedians endless, unique material. But idk how popular these shows are. I don't know anyone else who watches them.

Demerzel69 Apr 15, 2026 -4
Yeah like maybe the other handful I listed there that aren't that.

Drakengard Apr 16, 2026 +13
They're all much more similar than you're willing to admit. If they're not improv, they're a first cousin in relation to it. I don't claim to know what they should do instead to add variety, but claiming there's a lot variety is just not true.

kermit-fan Apr 16, 2026 +12
They're also heavily dependent on the existing cast within Dropout. Most of the concepts are formed around "here's how to watch that performer you already like make jokes in a new setting". I've tried some of their other shows, and if you don't already like the Dropout cast, they're hard to get into.

Sensitive-Cover-5687 Apr 16, 2026 +6
Dropout is really amazing for a specific kind of improv with a cast that has a specific kind of chemistry with one another. Hopefully they'll be able to continue the magic for years to come, but it's definitely an acquired taste that isn't for everyone.

tfhermobwoayway Apr 16, 2026 +1
I mean Brendan has branched out a lot in recent years. He’s just branched out into niche fields like computer games instead of shows or movies.
1
huskersax Apr 16, 2026 +2
Their entire content *brand* is improv
2
versusgorilla Apr 15, 2026 +9
It seems like there aren't that many bc the Dimension 20 brand releases a ton of content and episodes are hours long. It's like all just by comparison

Demerzel69 Apr 15, 2026 +4
If you're an active regular subscriber/user of the site it doesn't seem like there aren't that many. D20 is the thing I care about the least on dropout.tv. Those other shows drop new episodes every other week and when their seasons end a different show quickly takes it's place. Ex: The current season of MSN is about to end and Game Changer will take that every other Monday s*** for it's new season. There is always fresh new content that isn't D20 and it's extremely affordable with no ads.

>How many more shows do they need? I'd say they need a few more big shows. I'm a huge Dropout fan, but Make Some Noise, Game Changer, and Very Important people are just leaps and bounds better than anything else they produce. Crowd Control has a lot of potential, but it's super rough around the edges in its first season. The show needs to be restructured, and they need to be less heavy handed in the editing. The rest of their slate feels like glorified YouTube content. Parlor Room, in particular, was a bit disappointing for a new series since it's really basic nerd content that countless YouTube channels have done. A lot of their content strikes me as quick/c**** to produce to keep people subscribed when their main draws aren't in rotation and relies on people being familiar with the Dropout cast/mainstays and wanting to see more of them. I'm excited to see their slate for the rest of the year and into next year. Jacob Wysocki has his travel show which has a lot of potential and they're going to be shifting into scripted and animated content. There's a lot of potential to grow the platform. As is, it's still fairly niche.

Listing it out there are some I like that I forgot about like smarty-pants. I guess I just recently was feeling a drought and haven't been turning it on as much. I'll dig more into the new stand up, maybe that's an area I haven't gone deep enough into.

If you love absurdity, you should for sure watch Vanessa 5000. "Chris Grace as Scarlett Johansson" is also really good.

i dont watch a single piece of their DnD content, they have so much else
6
Tehdougler Apr 16, 2026 +1
I've been a happy subscriber for years and have never really watched any D20
1
tfhermobwoayway Apr 16, 2026 +1
I mean why do they need to? They’ve got a good solid fanbase and a decent business model. Do they need to appeal to every group under the sun?
1
Electric_jungle Apr 16, 2026 +1
They just need to keep going. I'm not like I'm threatening to drop my sub. But the quality of shows being generated recently is, in my opinion, much better than the ones previously.

Noodle-Works Apr 16, 2026 +1
Their variety shows are all killer and several tiers above a ton of trash that's aired on primetime network TV. "trivia game with lights in a dark room", "mini golf with kronk" and "lets play a board game with celebrities! LOL! version 1,034,580"

Vic is the type of comedy I need during these times. She needs to interview ALL OF the very important people!
7
FixedFun1 Apr 15, 2026 +4
Been following them since they were College Humor, I can't believe they found their golden era in the (aprox.) 2020's!
4
MisterB78 Apr 16, 2026 +3
How is it a surprise that they submitted themselves for consideration? They didn’t get nominated. They didn’t win anything. They entered the competition. What a f****** stupid title.
3
TitShark Apr 15, 2026 +2
What next, her guests up for comedy roles too?? Are they a joke to the committee??
2
Cosimo12 Apr 16, 2026 +2
Very important people is a very funny show. Some of the episodes are definitely better than others though, and I have to say i liked the first season the best.

Everyone talking about Vic, but Game Changer is also an incredible show. The variety of it is astounding and it's always a joy to watch. Been thinking of finally subscribing and watching it correctly and not what the post on Youtube

It's **totally** worth it just to sub for one month and watch all the Gamechanger episodes.
2

100% worth the subscription.

Mark my words, the public spotlight is going to be the downfall of Vehicular Manslaughter! I mean who treats their crew like that and gets emmys and/or a day time television main host gig? Not my spunky comedian! Edit : /s just in case.

If theres anyone that deserves recognition its these people and this channel. Sooo underrated
1
Bazinga_U_Bitch Apr 15, 2026 -2
For anyone unaware, the Emmys are a pay to win award show. These type of shows are just a gimmick for certain people to get greased.
-2
Sensitive-Cover-5687 Apr 16, 2026 -4
How did this get so many upvotes when this is just a PR article to promote Dropout? No one has been nominated for anything yet. Can I submit articles about every single Emmys submission, or is this a Dropout only thing?
