Druzhba pipeline restarts Russian oil flows to Europe, unblocking E.U. loan for Kyiv
The Druzhba pipeline has become one of the most politically charged pieces of infrastructure in Europe since a Russian drone strike damaged the pipeline in western Ukraine and stopped Russian oil deliveries to Hungary and Slovakia.

Worth pointing out that even with the pipeline open, Russia's share of oil supplied to the EU since 2022 has fallen drastically. Since 2014, Europe has been reducing its dependence on all forms of fossil fuel, especially reducing its dependence on Russian coal, oil, and gas. 50% of Europe's energy came from renewables in 2025, and that number will only continue rising. Russia was Europe's largest coal supplier. Now the EU imports zero coal from Russia. Russia was Europe's largest gas supplier, but since 2021, its share dropped from 45% to just 12%. And since Europe's overall reliance on all gas dropped by 20% during that time, in raw numbers, Russia's contribution to the EU's energy profile shrank even more than it seems. By EU law, a full ban on Russian gas imports comes into effect in 2027. By early 2026, Russian oil imports to the EU fell to below 3% of total imports, dropping significantly from 27% in 2021. Most member states have eliminated Russian oil, with remaining imports limited largely to pipeline deliveries to specific countries - Slovakia and Hungary. The EU has officially targeted a total phase-out of remaining fossil fuel imports.

People who had to work to help their enemy to earn money are probably happy to know this.

Can't fight Russia without energy. Ukraine imports significant amounts of refined products, including diesel, from countries like Belarus, Russia, and EU nations (e.g., Germany). Some of these fuels are made from Russian oil, as tracking the origin of all refined products is complex.

Well, in 5 years alternate sources could have been found, like India, who produces a lot of fuel from... Hmmm...

Oil markets are global, which is one reason why tracking the origin of refined oil products is not a simple or straightforward matter. Russia sells to India at a cut rate, due to price caps enacted by the EU and US. Russia's transport costs to Asia are €10 - €20 more per barrel, which also reduces their profits. The EU-led price caps and accompanying import bans have significantly impacted Russia's oil profits, reducing earnings by an estimated $61 billion (approximately 0.9% of GDP) between February 2022 and May 2024. While the price cap itself has been weakly enforced, its combination with the EU import ban and increased transport costs has acted as a partial transport embargo, forcing Russia to sell its crude at a d******* to Asian markets. The EU has tightened sanctions, lowering the cap and establishing a new mechanism to keep the price 15% below market price, which led to a 42% revenue reduction for Russia in March 2026 alone.

Why would they need the pipeline repaired to lift Hungary’s opposition? Orban is gone

Orban himself lifted the veto, strangely enough. probably trying to save face in the face of overwhelming defeat. magyar has yet to form a government.

Because they rely on it for energy. Magyar said himself they need to allow oil flow for them to remove the veto.

I looked it up, it’s cause Orban is still in charge until May 9th so he’s agreed to drop his opposition since the oil is flowing again

Yeah exactly. Only because the oil is flowing again
