I don't think there was very much to break down. It was a very by-the-numbers character drama in terms of theme, just a bit of a loopy way to get there.
Heartbreaking ending though. Watching >!Clark's realization that his life is completely destroyed was very difficult. The story clearly shows him doing something wrong, but it's presented so often as a man who is genuine and kind and trying his best to just love himself. I loved the idea of how his family is in it so briefly, almost as if it's a representation of how little he thinks of them during his escapades!<
Everyone put on a hell of a performance. Great acting, tight plot, weird beyond measure.
I don't think I've ever liked a show so much that also has zero chance of me ever recommending it to anyone.

I didn't find it paint-by-the-numbers because of how it presented these topics within the facade of a murder mystery.
This show was deeply tragic and it only got sadder with each episode. It was somehow also very funny and deeply fucked up at the same time.

Right?! The Structural Dynamics of Flow is one of the great in-story devices I’ve ever heard. And delivered perfectly by the guy with the girls’ name.

I really enjoyed the show and it wasn’t at all what I expected. The ending was hard to watch and the whole thing was twist after twist. I’m not sure I could recommend it to anyone nor really explain it well. If you forced me to describe the show in one word I would say it’s about love.

Watched it with my spouse and we both felt like we kind of saw the ending but having seen it, it was just all around sad. He hasn’t watched the final episode yet, so I’m curious what he will say!

Yeah I recommended it to some friends after the first few episodes and then the longer it went on the less I felt like suggesting it.
The performances and writing were great, and the ending was solid, I’m just not sure how much I enjoyed how long it took to get there. It felt like it dragged around the mid-point of the season but picked up again in the final few episodes, then everything came together quite nicely so I don’t exactly regret watching.
It made me start watching Patriot too, and I currently can’t stop laughing at John’s song about stealing a gun in S2E3 - so I’m very grateful for that.

I have been suggesting it to people up until the last episode. I very much enjoyed the mystery and though the reveal was logical it didn't feel satisfying.
I have a few issues with the finale but the first six I found worth watching

As a gay married man, watching this show was an interesting experience. My husband and I both know so many guys, both hetero or gay, who just feel lonely in their lives. Their marriage sucks, their love life is absent, they feel brow beaten or like a total loser - this show really captures how tragic that is. Yes, it had some unusual plot points that probably make people uncomfortable but honestly, not that far fetched. This show kinda felt like a modern American Beauty, getting a glimpse into people’s fucked up, tragic lives.
There are a lot of “straight” men who experiment because they just want to feel companionship and loved. And there are a lot of gay men who just cannot find someone who’s interested in a genuine relationship. Floyd’s character was incredibly tragic. Being rejected on social media and dating apps is seriously detrimental to one’s mental health. Clark’s breakdown in the pool house also felt very real. Both of these guys just wanted to feel loved and appreciated.

The scene was done so well. The whole show was really. I love how they really explored intimacy outside of sex and what really meant to be intimate with someone.

I thought Clarke's character was a lesson in taking what you have for granted/ allowing a midlife crisis to derail your life. He wasn't lonely - he had a family and that family wanted to spend time with him. He just wasn't *seeing* them. He had his eyes on his neighbours, Carol. Floyd...never on his kids or his wife.

Having never seen anything from Steven Conrad, I had no idea what to expect. I can't think of a show I've seen with a bigger divide between the tone I expected vs what it delivered.
I grew to appreciate it more every week. The mystery was just the hook to attract viewers but never really mattered to me. This was a show about intimacy in so many more forms than just sex.
Can't recommend it enough even though I also can't think of a person in my life I'd be comfortable suggesting it to.

Also check out *Patriot*, *Perpetual Grace LTD* and *Ultra City Smiths* from him (I love his shows but I don't think he knows how to title things TBH.....)
He wrote the movies *Walter Mitty* and *The Weatherman* too.

To some extent, I wish that Conrad had made DTF St Louis for Amazon and Patriot with HBO's backing.
Patriot is like Fleabag for kinda depressed men, but not like Fleabag at all. If that makes sense.

Yes! And if you watch Perpetual Grace > Patriot > DTF, in that order, the distillation of themes and tightening of the storytelling is cool to observe. Brilliant stuff.

I haven't watched the show, and as a dumb TV person, if the creator has to break down the finale for me, it means the show is either awesome or a box of bologna.
Is it worth the watch?

To be honest, the finale doesn't really need breaking down. But I will say I watched the finale a couple nights ago and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. For a show that's only seven episodes, it really hooks you and gets in your head.
It starts off as a bit of a genre piece (kooky whodunnit) but unfolds into something much more poignant

In my opinion yes but it's weirder than you might expect but also.....not really as cynical and more empathetic as you might expect. Tragedy and absurdist black comedy and screwed up characters but not necessarily cynical.
Have you seen *Patriot* on Amazon? Same creator.
