He already has 2 Emmy nominations, so it's not like a surprise he's a good actor.

Intelligent-Age2786 Apr 2, 2026 +210
I feel like Stranger Things alone proves his range. He did great at portraying Hoppers emotional and characteristic range

StuMacherGhostface Apr 2, 2026 +91
His scene in the first season when he's saving Will with the flashbacks of his daughter was fantastic, I thought

ChronoMonkeyX Apr 2, 2026 +57
Red Guardian has a surprising amount of depth in the performance. Not saying it's Oscar worthy, but he puts more into it than many actors would be capable of, just like Pugh with Yelena.

wps10 Apr 3, 2026 +30
That scene where he comforts her in Thunderbolts and tells her how he still sees that same little girl who lights up a room, even when she doesn’t. Harbour and Pugh were both incredible
30
smilysmilysmooch Apr 3, 2026 +12
Pugh seriously is the best thing to come out of either Marvel movie she's been in. I'm not sure if I'm entirely sold on this current MCU, but I definitely want to see more projects she's a part of.

dont_shoot_jr Apr 2, 2026 +12
Also showed the range of his right hook

Artistic-Advance5847 Apr 3, 2026 +5
He sorta played a double role in Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein... Who's the monster, really?
5
Mewtwohundred Apr 3, 2026 +1
Right? From the first season it was clear he was very talented.
1
DeficiencyOfGravitas Apr 3, 2026 +1
Did he have range? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. He's either having a grown man tantrum or doing the sad dad talk. Nothing in between. I'm sure he can act, but Stranger Things did not give Hopper a lot of range.

natguy2016 Apr 2, 2026 +28
Remember that many folks remember Harbour just for Jim Hopper. So seeing him do well somewhere will surprise people who had not seen anything besides "Stranger Things."
28
ravens2131 Apr 2, 2026 +17
I forgot that I liked him in his recurring role in The Newsroom.
17
PickleInDaButt Apr 2, 2026 +10
I remember him for Hellboy attempt 2 But I did think he was a good addition to MCU during a period of not great shows or movies
10
natguy2016 Apr 2, 2026 +10
Harbour was fine in "Hellboy." The script and more made ask, "why are we here?"
10
Steamedcarpet Apr 2, 2026 +9
It took me awhile to realize he was the CIA guy in Quantum of Solace
9
KneeHighMischief Apr 2, 2026 +6
He was so good in *Revolutionary Road*.
6
natguy2016 Apr 2, 2026 +2
Harbour is a guy who has been in plenty of places. But....
2
EatMyDiction1 Apr 2, 2026 -28
Seeing “Stranger Things” and “emotional range” in the same sentence is wild.
-28
noonefuckslikegaston Apr 2, 2026 +12
Meh Hopper was a decently written and well performed character in the first two seasons of the show
12
EatMyDiction1 Apr 2, 2026 -15
Yeah he was fine and Harbour killed it but the emotionality of that show was always skin deep. Which is fine, it gets the job done as a fun nostalgia fest.
-15
PogoLlama72 Apr 3, 2026 +3
Yeah, but it’s nice seeing him get something outside “gruff dad/cop with a heart.” This feels like the kind of role Emmy voters actually binge all the way through.
3
lawerorder Apr 3, 2026 +1
Im surprised...that anyone thinks he's a good actor.

Definitely wasnt expecting a musical number in this show but I loved that moment.
48
milkymaniac Apr 2, 2026 +40
The show is by Stephen Conrad, who previously created the highly underrated Patriot. The musical numbers in that show are fantastic.
40
koei19 Apr 2, 2026 +17
I genuinely think that Patriot might be the best TV show I've ever seen. It is just so good on every level. The writing, acting, cinematography, scoring...all absolutely top-notch. It's genuinely criminal how underrated it is. Nobody I've talked to outside of listnook has seen it.
17
theriveryeti Apr 2, 2026 +8
I had to buy it vs. stream it, but Perpetual Grace LTD is in the same ballpark, but ends on a crazy cliffhanger (because it was cancelled). I'm still not sorry I watched it, it's amazing.
8
joeyscheidrolltide Apr 3, 2026 +3
Watching the finale at this very moment
3
Capt_morgan72 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Why did I think it was a Bill Lawrence show? Probably just cuz Bill has been absolutely killing it with every show recently. So in my mind great show= Bill Lawrence right now.
1
Fastbird33 Apr 3, 2026 +2
You’re thinking of Rooster which debuted on HBO around the same time
2
Capt_morgan72 Apr 3, 2026
Yeah that’s one of them, Ted lasso, scrubs, shrinking are others all releasing now or soon by Bill Lawrence that are all 9+/10. The guys currently got the Midas touch. Just kinda assumed DTF was another project he turned to gold.

I love the one piece of bacon for flavor. That’s going to be my new rationale going forward.

GenghisConnieChung Apr 3, 2026 +6
Maybe my favourite scene of the series so far. So unexpected and so funny.
6
WoahThatsMyPecker Apr 3, 2026 +2
See ya later elevator!
2
banjofitzgerald Apr 2, 2026 +125
Did people not know he was a good actor? I thought the whole thing was his other problems like cheating on his partner or alleged addictions/mental breaks. His character is so surprisingly warm and almost pure. It’s easy to see why the characters around him react the way they end up reacting. The running out of a whole ass separate situation to save the blind and deaf high schooler trying to find his dance was very touching.
125
mygamethreadaccount Apr 2, 2026 +25
the whole thing with them at the winery was honestly one of the most heart-warming scenes i've ever watched. same for his scene with the son later in the episode. two admirable and genuinely touching examples of male bonding.
25
icantfeelmylags Apr 2, 2026 +30
It’s weird because it was even super obvious on stranger things. Hopper was effortlessly the most well acted character in almost every scene he’s in.
30
spitey Apr 3, 2026 +1
He was in an episode of Law and Order (can’t remember if it was SVU or Criminal Intent) yeeeears ago, and it was an astounding performance.
1
8__D Apr 2, 2026 +170
I really like this show. It's pretty weird at times, but it's fun and interesting and the cast are all great.

Double great!
14
Squirrel_Master82 Apr 3, 2026 +2
What's the connection between the two shows? I noticed the dialog style was very similar pretty early into DTF.

And it was "inspired" by a true story. You can just Google it and it will come up. About a dentist...

plsno730 Apr 2, 2026 +4
I think the weirdness fits right in. There are all sorts of silly and dumb shit happening in the background that's hilarious
4
Tgs91 Apr 3, 2026 +8
I described this show to my friends as: It's like Tim Robinson wrote a script for a show, but then instead of the Tim Robinson absurd delivery, somebody else took over the show, hired good actors and told them to deliver their lines serious.
8
Robofetus-5000 Apr 2, 2026 +6
Yeah its got a surreal vibe for sure but I like it
6
immaownyou Apr 2, 2026 +7
Check out Lodge 49. Supremely underrated
7
Gwoardinn Apr 3, 2026 +1
Did that ever get a proper ending? I remember the first part of season 1
1
kdubstep Apr 3, 2026 +2
Definitely has me intrigued and a pretty stark and honest depiction of a slice of life that does exist but is rarely shown
2
sexmath Apr 3, 2026 +1
It is a high quality show and the twists were interesting but not ridiculous.
1
dingleberryboy20 Apr 2, 2026 -13
I honestly think it's doing Chair Company better than Chair Company
-13
Gintami Apr 2, 2026 -3
Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. It’s a valid sentiment. I dropped Chair Company after two episodes.
-3
Whydoialwaysdothis69 Apr 2, 2026 +5
It’s an opinion that many people, including myself, think is wrong. Also, not watching a series until the end then giving your opinion on it, especially one that goes somewhere you definitely didn’t expect is just lazy internet shit but…typical here
5
AssassinSnail33 Apr 3, 2026 +1
There's nothing wrong with giving your opinion about a show without seeing the whole thing. He didn't like it, so he stopped watching it. that is all OP said, I'd hardly even call that an opinion, it's just stating facts. Aren't you giving your opinion on DTF St Louis, a show you haven't finished, with your comment? Sounds like lazy internet shit to me....
1
Whydoialwaysdothis69 Apr 3, 2026 +1
I think it’s dumb…that’s my opinion…that I stated…in the post…
1
AssassinSnail33 Apr 3, 2026 +1
I thought that giving your opinion about a show you haven't finished was "lazy internet shit"? Or is it only a problem when someone gives their opinion about a show you personally like?
1
Whydoialwaysdothis69 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Haven’t given my opinion on it, dummy
1
AssassinSnail33 Apr 3, 2026 +2
Yes you did, dummy. Somebody said they think DTF is better than The Chair Company, and you called that opinion wrong. Which clearly implies you think The Chair Company is better than DTF. Which is fine, but then you criticized the guy for giving his opinion about a show he hasn't finished, even though you just did the same thing. Do you not see how silly that is? I can't spell it out any more clearly for you dude.
2
Gintami Apr 3, 2026 +1
Not really. I don’t owe any show more of my time if I did not like the first 2-3 episodes. That’s absurd. It gets better is not valid for me.
1
Whydoialwaysdothis69 Apr 3, 2026
You’re both getting downvoted because it’s a shit opinion, but keep on rocking in the free world, bud
0
dingleberryboy20 Apr 3, 2026
I like both shows. You're just demonstrating how easily a single sentence offended you and caused you to make multiple posts defending your baby emotions.

Tim Robinson is great, but his fandom is weirdly culty.

sinkwiththeship Apr 3, 2026 +8
The way they keep repeating phrases that already sound kind of unnatural is such a weird decision and I'm super here for it. Like the way they constantly say French(ing).

I find myself laughing out loud at the silliest little things in this show.
49
fartswhenhappy Apr 2, 2026 +39
This last episode when he continues telling the story of how he got his "bend", the scene where he's trying to open the umbrella, I was cringing in anticipation of the trauma while laughing at the absurdity of it.

The bit where Clark is trying to appear s*** by talking about the underwater demolition stuff and carol is playing up to it made me laugh so much. So absurd

I love shows like this where I'm like "wtf is this even about?” but in a good way. It's like The Chair Company but slightly less silly
14
Beersmoker420 Apr 3, 2026
the chair company almost feels more serious than DTF to me lol, both of them have some more serious tones to them playing in the background of the main characters and their antics

He's great in this show. It's a slow burner but also a great show. His face when he signed "can I watch" was hilarious.
20
sw337 Apr 2, 2026 +21
This is my favorite show I've seen this year: >!Carol (his wife on the show) seemed like the villian early on, but all the flashbacks make it clear she was stressed out and her husband's "kindness" is ruining their lives.!< It's a testament to great storytelling. I am also surprised how well he plays the complexities of the character.
21
darkeststar Apr 2, 2026 +17
One of my favorite turns the show has done is showing you the same scene you've seen before but with new, added context that changes your perspective...AND THEN going back to that same scene again to change your perspective AGAIN. Really puts you in the shoes of the detectives who seem to constantly be fighting what to make of each new development as they learn it
17
theodo Apr 2, 2026 +17
She still comes off as one of the most unlikable characters I've seen in a long time. "Can you speak up?!" lol
17
slipslikefreudian Apr 2, 2026 +9
She’s doing it on purpose but yeah I’m not sure how it’ll end Monday should be good
9
theodo Apr 2, 2026 +1
Nah there's a lot of scenes where it wouldn't be her doing it on purpose where she still comes off as just an annoying, frustrating person. Like when she's running lol
1
slipslikefreudian Apr 2, 2026 +13
She’s listening to a podcast about how to dominate a conversation in the latest episode
13
bchris24 Apr 3, 2026 +4
Shes been listening to that since like episode 1, it was explained very early on
4
MasterofPandas1 Apr 3, 2026 +4
Yeah, she’s a b**** unless she’s with Clark. But it’s a testament to Cardellini’s acting that she can pull off both versions of Carol.
4
math-yoo Apr 2, 2026 +7
Down to what?
7
Early-Piano2647 Apr 2, 2026 +7
I find this show inherently sad but beautiful and mysterious. Hated it for the first episode though.

i had a tough time with this and rooster out of the gate. now i cannot get enough of this, but rooster continues to suuuuck.
1

What a take. Rooster is great!
1
ShedMontgomery Apr 3, 2026 +6
I had no idea what to expect from this show, but I've been intrigued, entertained, and confused by it the entire run. It helps that Bateman, Linda Cardellini, and Richard Jenkins are among my favorite TV actors but Harbour, Joy Sunday, and Peter Sarsgaard have also been excellent.
6
Nicole_Bitchie Apr 3, 2026 +2
I don’t want it to end. I don’t want to know whodunnit, I want endless confusion and misdirection and new plot points and sex robots.
2
Gwoardinn Apr 3, 2026 +1
Sarsgaard's character was cast impeccably, talk about elevating a role.

He should absolutely win an Emmy for this.
3
NoDaddyNotTheBelt25 Apr 2, 2026 +6

It was fun to unexpectedly see him in Quantum of Solace when I saw it the other day. He makes a great slimeball CIA agent.
3
Flight2039Down Apr 2, 2026 +3
The acting in the show has been stellar so far.
3
DoeMeansAFemaleDeer Apr 3, 2026 +3
Shout out to Steven Conrad, creator of the show and obligatory watch Patriot if you haven’t. It’s his masterpiece.
3
rocker2014 Apr 3, 2026 +3
His character is seriously captivating. Incredibly tragic, but each episode makes you feel for him even more. He's just a good hearted person with good intentions but he's also a little off. Not good with social cues, wants to please everyone even if it's bad for himself, doesn't always say the right things. But he means well and just is good. David Harbour brings this character to life.
3
WoodpeckerGingivitis Apr 2, 2026 +5

primoprimo Apr 2, 2026 +3
I’ve been watching the show and it seems I am the only one who just doesn’t… get it? I find it mundane and boring and kind of awkward, outside of the central mystery. The dialogue is also extremely awkward. Like, if they are going for a campy vibe, then they are seemingly not communicating that well enough. Or, if they’re going for a more serious tone, the dialogue seems so poorly written. I understand people seems to enjoy that it’s a mix of both those things, maybe I just don’t f**k with it.
3
DoeMeansAFemaleDeer Apr 3, 2026 +3
Yea, that’s just Steven Conrad’s style. Somber and awkward pacing dialogue. I love it, but sounds like it’s just not for you, which is totally fine. I can definitely see why people wouldn’t enjoy it.
3
lordatlas Apr 3, 2026 +1
It's not just you. I checked out after 5 episodes of the same, awkward, slow shit.
1
theTunkMan Apr 3, 2026 +1
Agreed. I really wish I liked it more but it’s so slow and repetitive
1
flearhcp97 Apr 3, 2026 -2
It feels like they're going way out of their way to do or say something, but I'm just not getting it. I generally don't like shows that seem to get off on being weird/unconventional just for the sake of doing it.

Didnt she cheat on her previous husband with a prostitute? They deserve each other, honestly
23
Gintami Apr 2, 2026 +8
What does that have to do with the show or he as an actor? We’re entering into a very weird timeline that is almost puritanical in the moral grandstanding over someone you don’t personally know and who they are f******.
8
PacMoron Apr 2, 2026 +8
Super relevant. So weird how parasocial people are with celebrities. Most of them are not paragons of morality.
8
greennurse61 Apr 2, 2026 +1
O hate how that show made him so disgusting. Frenched?
1
ebon94 Apr 3, 2026 +1
I’m one/two episodes behind but the show in my mind has gone from “LOCAL MAN KILLED OVER LINDA CARDELLINI (UNDERSTANDABLE)” to “LOCAL SAINT JUST TRYING HIS BEST TRAGICALLY STRUCK DOWN BY SINNERS AND SELF LOATHING”
1
UncleCornPone Apr 3, 2026 +1
he's pretty great in this show.

3
SixersJawn Apr 3, 2026 +1
im a little tired of bateman but i did like ozarks.  should i be DTFing?
1
flearhcp97 Apr 3, 2026 +3
It's weird - it's definitely an atypical Bateman role, but still done in the typical Bateman style. Up to you whether that's good or bad.
3
MasterofPandas1 Apr 3, 2026 +1
The show itself has a creeping surrealness with some outright silly stuff in between the murder mystery story. But Bateman sticks to a pretty safe Bateman like character. I haven’t seen Ozarks, but I feel like a lot of the situations Clark are in is how Michael from Arrested Development would respond.
1
i_hate_ketchup777 Apr 3, 2026 +1
too bad he blew it with Lily Allen

I can see Listnook has finally swung back around and now we don't hate David Harbour. I'll check back in with the hive mind in 5 months to see where we are at again.
-4
Kid_Ichorous Apr 2, 2026 +6
Wow, it’s almost like there is no such thing as a dogmatic Listnook “hive mind,” just different users haphazardly tossing off ephemeral comments based on their own knowledge, interests, opinions, etc., sometimes establishing inchoate majority sentiments that are ever evolving.
6
suppadelicious Apr 2, 2026 +1
Didn’t realize Listnook was 1 person and not a collective of users who have their opinions. News to me.
1

I viewed the 1st 2 episodes. IMHO don’t waste your time

She kissed Zoe Kravitz without her consent and tried to twist the scenario to make it sound like the encounter was mutual and consensual, whereas Zoe said Lily basically attacked her and forced her to I see her fans have downvoted me a couple times. Truth hurts

He’s still a 4chan Stan. Doesn’t deserve anything.

> 4chan Stan Lilly Allen is a trashbag who cheated on her spouse repeatedly. Still makes catchy music.

He was, and maybe is, a genre star. But he nailed the role of Hooper. That character dealt with some weird and heavy shit, but also had funny and light moments. Not like it was a one-dimensional character. I guess, figuratively and literally and visually, it was a multi-dimensional character. And I won't claim that Stranger Things or Hooper or Harbour are my favorite actors or characters in anything, but he did a great job with Hooper. DTF St Louis? No idea. Never seen it. But if he's breaking the "genre star" mold, I'll try to catch up. If he's just doing Hooper again, I've already seen that.
