Give this a Farscape vibe, where it's the cast interacting with a lot of puppets (including animatronic Donut) and it could work. Would truly have to lean into the camp, though, given the scale of what's involved.

The murder dozer was straight out of labyrinth. When I started the first book I almost quit on it because it was just plagiarizing everything from 80s movies, DnD, nethack and all that. Especially because *so much* of the comedy comes from the AI descriptions of things. Those feel natural in a book, but having a two-page item description doesn't really work for a TV show. Obviously, things get adapted to fit their medium, but I'm still nervous about it.
They even address in the books why such a thing works for the characters within the books. Why isn't not weird for those characters to get a wall of text in the middle of a fight.
10
supernerdloveApr 2, 2026

Ted was a very popular show, and it’s not getting anymore seasons because a single basic CGI character made the show, that was otherwise filmed on simple sets, too expensive. Unless this show reaches GoT levels of popularity it’ll never make it.
9
GofunkierttiApr 2, 2026
+31
Yeah it's a tough adaptation. I mean someone just did One Piece well so it's not impossible but it's hard on this budget. Even animated it would be expensive to animate
I feel like it's doable as long as you adjust the power level down though. You could tell a lot of the same story with alot more humanish characters. Have a few more prosthetics monsters and less CG stuff. Less giant monsters and more weird ones.
The real problem is Donut (and Mungo). I get that Ted just did this but it literally just got cancelled because too much CGI made it too expensive. It's one thing to have CGI creatures once an episode. Donut is basically in every scene. Could they make it work with puppetry?

As someone who used to work in the entertainment industry in the art department as a production designer who's ENTIRE job was to make things look good within budget, it frustrates me to absolutely no end watching people discuss this since I've been in many meeting rooms discussing budgets.
TED is overbudget because it's supposed to be a 20 min family sitcom. It's overbudget for what the network expects a family sitcom to be.
I would assume the budget for an episode of TED isn't higher than an episode of The Orville.
The difference is that The Orville is a SciFi show that requires many different special effects.
Typically you'd be given a far higher budget for a scifi show than a family sitcom, and if your family sitcom is getting close in budget to a scifi show then something's amiss.
And I'm basing this on my knowledge of Seth McFarlane's tendency to embrace practical and digital effects in his shows.
Donut would be CG. They'd go all in on Donut in the marketing and merchandise tie-ins, so the cost of Donut would be irrelevant. Donut would be the single most profitably justified expense in the entire production would be my guess. Like the character is set up for it and for all the marketing to be tongue-in-cheek about it.
Mongo could be a mix of CG and puppeteering potentially. That's been done before and it's a straightforward process.
They'd probably use a mix of practical sets and [StageCraft](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StageCraft) would be my guess.
And to the VFX guy who got mad at me last time because he thinks straightforward and simple mean the same thing, IT DOES NOT MEAN THE SAME THING. I AM NOT SAYING IT IS SIMPLE, JUST THAT IT'S A WELL TREADED PROCESS THAT DOESN'T NEED TO REINVENT THE WHEEL.

I agree that One Piece is something we can point to that demonstrates that it’s possible to do live action and if done right could knock it out of the park. But there needs to be a fairly long leash for that to happen. That said it has a big enough fandom that it could be a major staple and cashcow for a decade.
6
verriusApr 2, 2026
+6
The thing with One Piece though is that Luffy isn't going full rubberman every single scene; they're pretty good about constraining it to one set piece every 2-3 episodes. About half of DCC, especially in the first book, is Carl arguing with Donut. You don't need her to be visible in every shot, but she's going to be there in every scene. And people are going to be a lot more unforgiving of a bad CG on a cat, which they see all the time, than they are of an "alive" stuffed animal, which they've never seen.

It's much more Dollar Store than you'd expect for an accurate adaptation though. That's fine for Twisted Metal because that fanbase is very into camp.
Dungeon Crawler Carl has *complex* and *pervasive* fantastical imagery. Hell, one of the two main protagonists is a talking cat. Are they going to be able to nail a fully CGI cat? Will they make it a puppet? I doubt they'll use cat actors because her coloration is tortoiseshell, but maybe they'll just change that.
Another main character is a shapeshifter, who looks like a poorly drawn human when we meet her. Do they skip that part, or do they put her in makeup until she's able to more accurately create a face?
The first enemies they fight are goblins, then llamas who spit lava. That's dozens of CGI characters that you really can't do any other way.
Essentially, if they're going to make this show they're either going to compromise deeply on the aesthetics and plot, or they're going to spend Rings of Power type money on making it happen. It will be interesting to see play out.
On the bright side, we already have an audiobook series that is acclaimed as some of the best audiobooks ever made. If anyone is interested in this story, go check those out! We'll always have the source material to savor even if adaptations are bad.

It might depend on how they plan on handling Princess Donut. The main CGI in Ted is the title character needing to be fully rendered for every single scene he is in in every episode. A lot of the characters and scenes in the first DCC book at least can be achieved with practical effects enhanced with CG to touch it up. MacFarlane already has multiple seasons of The Orville under his belt so he absolutely has a practical team in mind for prosthetics and makeup and set design. I just don't know how they do Donut without making her CG...unless they want to go the original Sabrina the Teenage Witch route and have shots of a real cat in the background and then when she talks they switch to a puppet.

I will reserve judgment but like everyone, I have concerns. I want this done well, even the campy aspects, and the budget required has to be astronomical. The fact that Seth pitched Matt for it gives me some hope that they will work to make it faithful. As recent shows like The Boys, Fallout, and Invincible, have shown a hunger for less punches pulled. This is a gore infested, swear riddled, campy IP that somehow has deep meaningful messages about persistence, found family, and dealing with trauma. I hope they can thread the needle but the odds seem be long

I generally have 0 interest in this book genre, my partner f****** loves them and binge reads pretty much everything from the best to the worst of it and kept telling me how good this was. I eventually exchanged a "I'll read book 1 of DCC if you read book 1 of something else" deal and tried DCC.
Legit some of the most fun I've had listening to an audiobook in a long time. Jeff Hayes is incredibly talented, and Matt's ability to juggle a frankly massive cast while slowly introducing new ideas and meta concepts to the series while also just being... generally really pissed off at the real world and pouring that into the books is just great. Probably one of my favorite long series I've read in a long time, just from the sheer "f*** yeah" moments followed by absolute tragedy, repeat. Looking forward to seeing how it all wraps up in the end.
I don't think I'll be going off on a LitRPG adventure after this series, but I'm very glad I picked this one up. Also for the people complaining about the cursing and general language.... have ya'll never been around people in traumatic, dangerous situations? Especially military people? This language is *tame*.

just curious what your rec was and if it ended up being a good trade for them as well?

The Blade Itself / First Law series. They liked it a lot, but didn't enjoy the politics sections towards the end of the series. I think we both came out pretty well in the trade.

Yeah... I'm not sure.
I hope for the best, but... we will see.
It does take place in what is effectively a made up dungeon, so it can get away with a lot. It doesn't need to be hyper serious, so that will help.
I guess they can do a lot of costumes, rather than make everything a CG monster. Donut could be a puppet for some of it, or just a cat on set or something.
Patrick Warbiton can play Carl's dad!

It was already doomed by being live action and now it's on Peacock. Double doomed. This is getting cancelled by season 3 at the maximum.

As a fan of the series, this is going to be a *terrible* live action show. What a bizzare decision to make.
There's just no way they have the budget to be doing all of the CGI that would be required for this to work.

This doesn’t make any sense. Carl running around in his boxers would look fine animated. But season three of that with a live action dude would be so annoying.

Ya, you sometimes forget while reading/listening that he's running around barefoot in boxers with a big jacket and kneepads. It's my favourite series, but I don't know how that will look in live action.

I get it if people don't like Family Guy, but, for my money, Seth MacFarlane has a proven track record in creating strong adaptations of source material. Both The Orville and The Naked Gun were loving, faithful updates of beloved franchises that did a fantastic job of capturing the spirit of their respective sources. I actually think he's one of the better people to helm a DCC project, especially given DCC's sense of humor which is very in line with MacFarlane's.
It should be of note that MacFarlane pitched Dinniman and Dinniman chose MacFarlane.

Just think guys, can’t be any worse than the Halo tv show. Or the Wheel of Time tv show, or the Percy Jackson tv show, or any of the other completely destroyed IPs that Hollywood “adapts”.
For real, they’ve been handed a golden goose. Just let it shit out gold by following EXACTLY what was already written. As long as they don’t show in their own love interests or side plots, and speed run tying that goose’s neck in a knot, they’re set for 10 seasons.

I actually think this will do well live action. Seth will get a big budget and I expect a gritty mix of Ted and The Orville.

If it was on a better platform I’d say I’ll definitely at least check it out, but I’ve been able to easily avoid Peacock so far and have no desire to add yet another streaming service just for this. I was more optimistic when there was a chance it could be animated. I just don’t see a Peacock exclusive level budget live action version being able to do these books any semblance of justice.

How are they even going to do this absurd shit on television, are they really going to have a a CGI Crab “ascend” because of a dead baby seal and insults - I guess it will be easy to cast you know who, because of Seth’s working relationship with him.

Live action is worrying. Anime/adult animation would be a much better format for everything happening in this series. I just have a feeling it is going to come off c**** or cheesy (or both) in a very massive way.
I guess that makes me a little less disappointed it will feature on Peacock, one of, if not *thee* worst of all the streaming services.
Dont have high hopes for this personally, but hey, who knows right?
