They had some success with their first couple of albums on alternative radio. I happened to be introduced to E's prior solo albums before Eels so I was onboard when those came out.
I followed their releases for a long time, until the albums started feeling very cookie-cutter, just repeating a lot of the same material, moods, and even songwriting. I dropped off after Hombre Lobo so I'm not sure if they recovered after that.

*Electro-Shock Blues* is such an amazing album. It really takes you on a depressing journey to end up being uplifting and life-affirming.

That really is the story of the album. As E put it most of his family was dying off or in a hospital/asylum and he was searching for how to find and express a life still worth living.

Specifically his mom battled and passed of cancer and his sister committed suicide between the previous album and Electro-Shock.
