Humanity is basically the toys at the end of Toy Story 3 right before they get incinerated. They know it’s coming slowly. But I doubt aliens will save us

We are our own great filter.
23
Low_Pickle_112 Apr 27, 2026 +17
We could still save us, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But according to people like Elon Musk and Sam Altman, doing so would actually be worse for us. And since we as a whole still think you must be brainwashed to question that, we can expect things to get worse before they get better.

ArkitekZero Apr 28, 2026 +5
> But according to people like Elon Musk and Sam Altman, doing so would actually be worse for us. Certainly worse for them

I would be really worried except the Administration has put together a task force!
3
kaisadilla_ Apr 27, 2026 +5
It's a dumb world. We all know these people are the problem but none of us have the power to remove them from there.
5
happy_dad857 Apr 28, 2026 +4
Or do we? I refuse to believe that if enough of us came together and fought to remove these people from their positions of power, we couldn’t do it. We outnumber them. Call me crazy, but it could be done if enough of us wanted it and were willing to fight for it.
4
MyAccountWasBanned7 Apr 28, 2026 +3
We do, it just requires things that a lot of us normal people would rather not do.

This was my fist thought too. It works quite well with Altman being a sexual predator and Musk being an alien (immigrant). Everyone who is not those two loses regardless of outcome.

Alien vs predator.. holy shit

The sad thing is that even his attempts to hang out with “the cool rapists” make him look lame. (Re: the email he sent Epstein on Christmas morning.)
28
TimeySwirls Apr 27, 2026 +13
Considering the case he paid to settle in the past surely we’ve gone straight to the sequel and Musk is a hybrid Predalien no?

It’s like watching two Bond villains fight over who gets to own the laser that might accidentally destroy the moon. One wants to give the laser to everyone (Musk), and the other wants to lease it to Microsoft (Altman). The fact that Judge Rogers called it "billionaires versus billionaires" in a preliminary hearing really sums up the "NICE day" energy of this whole trial.
57
0xd34db347 Apr 27, 2026 +55
> One wants to give the laser to everyone Bullshit, he just doesn't want the other guy to have it.
55

Exactly. They are both awful. Let's not portray Musk as someone he isn't.

EquipLordBritish Apr 27, 2026 +16
> One wants to give the laser to everyone (Musk) Good luck with that.
16
cmdr-William-Riker Apr 27, 2026 +10
Musk wants to sell the laser to everyone, not give it. If he truly wanted everyone to have AI for free, Grok would be completely open source under MIT or Apache license. He doesn't give a shit about anyone but himself, he's just butt hurt that he wasn't involved

>The civil lawsuit accuses Altman, OpenAI's CEO, and his top lieutenant, Greg Brockman, of double-crossing Musk by straying from the San Francisco company's founding mission to be an altruistic steward of a revolutionary technology. The lawsuit alleges they shifted into a moneymaking mode behind his back. Isn't it a requirement of a Silicon Valley CEO to abandon their benevolent ethos? Google's motto used to be "don't be evil". Elon Musk wanted a multiplanetary society. Peter Thiel wanted floating micronation utopias. Seems like Altman is just following the herd.
792
NuPNua Apr 27, 2026 +418

54
coolpapa2282 Apr 27, 2026 +8
After? It's not like Rapture looked great before that either. :D
8
Confedehrehtheh Apr 27, 2026 +14
Rapture looks pretty cool during the initial Bathysphere ride. As soon as you get to the landing tho... You'd think maybe that would make an impact on people thinking it's a utopia
14
Rusty_Red Apr 27, 2026 +3
If you play the Buried at Sea DLCs from Bioshock Infinite, you get to see Rapture before the collapse. It did look pretty rad... except for the whole "brewing societal collapse" really harshin the vibe...

He named his surveillance company after the orb Sauron used to corrupt the mind of Saruman. Is it really a surprise that he took the wrong lesson from other works of fiction too?
49
PaleCommission150 Apr 27, 2026 +13
To be fair, the Palantiri were originally gifts from the Elves to the men of Gondor who helped fight in the War of Wrath that helped push Melkor into the outer void for good. They were originally a kind communication system for coordinating efforts across the vast reaches of the realm but eventually corrupted by Sauron. I think most of the things Feanor made, it is hinted that he made the Palantiri, were too powerful for mortals to use long term. Even the Silmarils which held the light of the two trees had the unintended side effects.
13
willstr1 Apr 27, 2026 +32
Fair, but presumably Thiel is aware of the eventual corruption by Sauron so choosing that name while knowing that result is still an alarming decision. >They were originally a kind communication system for coordinating efforts across the vast reaches of the realm but eventually corrupted by Sauron. What an accurate metaphor for social media written long before social media existed.

4

When he says "utopias", he means "utopias for the rich". The same we already have, except the owners of the city are also its government.
2
Rip_Rif_FyS Apr 27, 2026 +110
>Elon Musk wanted a multiplanetary society. Peter Thiel wanted floating micronation utopias. To be extremely clear, those aren't inherently benevolent things, and musk and thiel certainly didn't want them for benevolent reasons. They're only interested in creating "other places to live" insofar as in them they could have their perfect unregulated neofeudalist tech-lord empires where they can finally be the little God Kings they've always vainly imagined themselves to be, beholden to no greater authority that might limit their capacity to abuse whatever serfs they bring with them
110
shralpy39 Apr 27, 2026 +48
Yeah it is extra ironic that a shitter like Musk is suing over this too. As if he would have taken the company in a better direction. He is just as myopic, if not worse.

Musk is a piece of shit and wrong most of the time, but you calling openia "company" is precisely his point: it was founded as non profit organization and as such raised a lot of money. Whoever funded openai before the change got scammed. This is a "broken clock twice a day" situation.
13
Bigram03 Apr 27, 2026 +38

Elon: Tesla is not a car company.  Altman: OpenAI is not a nonprofit.  Elon: No, not like that.
7
Extreme-Outrageous Apr 27, 2026 +33
Open AI was a 501c3. Google (then Alphabet) was always a C corporation. To change your corporate structure is a fairly radical restructuring. Incredibly abusive by Altman. And I loathe Musk.
33
PaleCommission150 Apr 27, 2026 +3
I think Alman's lawyers will argue that AI is such a fast moving and emerging technology it is not possible due to compute requirements to keep the tech non profit. The data centers are massively expensive, the chips are too. Due to the frontier nature of the technology they are helping to shape and pioneer changing the corp structure is necessary at this point to keep operating... " something like that.
3
Extreme-Outrageous Apr 27, 2026 +15
Sure. But then it should have never been a nonprofit. And a smart person would know that. Altman knew what he was doing. It was always the plan to get free money at the beginning and then change when needed.
15
MerlinsMentor Apr 27, 2026 +5
> I think Alman's lawyers will argue that AI is such a fast moving and emerging technology it is not possible due to compute requirements to keep the tech non profit. This is just mealy-mouthed lawyer-speak for "the law shouldn't apply to me, because I'm special." Not that Altman's lawyers won't say it -- I think you're right that they will. Doesn't make it anything other than claiming privilege because they're "special", though.
5
Snuffleupagus03 Apr 27, 2026 +27
Musk has multiple interviews talking about the existential threat of climate change and the necessity of Tesla’s mission to basically save the world. So much for that….
27

24
SYLOH Apr 27, 2026 +12
It's not immigrants, Musk (an immigrant) is in favor of WHITE immigrants. He's just anti-non-whites.
12
PatchyWhiskers Apr 27, 2026 +3
It's driving him crazy. He sees everything through the lens of white people vs non-white people, to the point that he's pushing for environmental destruction that threatens the whole of humanity, very much including the white race.
3
talllongblackhair Apr 27, 2026 +8
And his fortune is almost entirely based on contracts and rebates from the U.S. government. If Democrats ever get back in power, canceling those should be the first thing they do on day 1.
8
pandariotinprague Apr 27, 2026 +3
If they don't, will you even care? Liberals never do. Democrats have corruption, corporate power, and Republicans pushing them from one direction, and liberals not pushing them at all from the other direction. There's no f****** universe where they'd ever go the other direction, is there?
3
puff_of_fluff Apr 27, 2026 +2
There certainly isn’t if we drop out of the political system entirely
2
TheShadowKick Apr 27, 2026 +2
I mean, his companies are doing valuable things for the US government. Canceling their contracts would be harmful to us, too. It's like the old adage that conservatives would eat shit if they knew a liberal would have to smell their breath.

He was outed as a sex pest and had to join the team where that's accepted.
3
iamnotyourcupoftea Apr 27, 2026 +4
I have a hard time believing Elon is really doing this because he truly wanted the venture to be altruistic. Is he just trying to cash in on the money the company is making? Asking for $100 billion in damages when he only invested $38 million sure makes it seem that way.
4
TheBirminghamBear Apr 27, 2026 +9
> Isn't it a requirement of a Silicon Valley CEO to abandon their benevolent ethos? Sorta kinda. It's more like Silicon Valley CEOs start out as evil people who create a company that pretends to be moral so it can attract all the decent, smrat people necessary to build it, and once it grows large enough that it is shielded by money they just drop the pretense.
9
Ancient-Bat1755 Apr 27, 2026 +3
Its more like “we need you to do less or our xai wont compete” , both companies suck and rely on free money
3
scm66 Apr 27, 2026 +2
> floating Y tho?
2
nith_wct Apr 27, 2026 +2
Yeah, but a benevolent ethos isn't really legally binding. Altman's mistake is making it sort of legally binding.
2
Slypenslyde Apr 27, 2026 +2
It goes like this: * Don't be evil * To grow we need this capital but won't give up on our values * To make an omelet you have to crack eggs * WHY ARE THERE STILL UNCRACKED EGGS???
2
kaisadilla_ Apr 27, 2026 +2
A motto is different than a stated goal. If your motto is "improving people's lives", I give you a million dollars and then you use it to kickstart a healthcare company, I can't complain. However, if you tell me you want money to research cancer, I give you a million dollars, and you do your healthcare company, I have a case there. You said my money was going to go towards a goal and it was a lie. Of course Musk's true intention is to boycott a competitor, but he has a case - whether a judge thinks that case is solid enough is a different issue, ofc.
2
MentalDisintegrat1on Apr 27, 2026 +110
Altman's pushing for the government to shield them from any damages AI causes. They know how bad it can be and they don't care.
110
johnnycyberpunk Apr 27, 2026 +79
The fight is over the origins of OpenAI as a non-profit and their status now as a for-profit company. OpenAI's original assets were built with tax-exempt donations and public benefit in mind and so they must remain dedicated to charitable purposes... So the big hurdle is **Asset Disposition**. When they were converting, OpenAI had to transfer all assets to another 501(c)(3) organization -OR- Pay fair market value for any assets it wants to retain in the new for-profit entity. The rest is paperwork with the state and the IRS.

63
Deer_Investigator881 Apr 27, 2026 +24
Also super weird to even talk IPO as a non-profit lol
24
Mobile-Bar7732 Apr 27, 2026 +17
I find it "ironic". Musk milks Tesla shareholders to buy companies like Twitter. Tesla shareholders don't receive anything in return. As they say, "what goes around....comes around". Edit: And the best part is that he is going to do it all over again with SpaceX IPO. That's why he wants part of the Nasdaq 100 and other indexes. ETFs and other funds will be forced to buy his overpriced SpaceX stock.
17
Wetzilla Apr 27, 2026 +3
Well, they first created a for profit subsidy of the OpenAi Foundation. Then they spun that off into a PBC and gave the OpenAi foundation 26% ownership. What we currently call OpenAI did not start out as a non-profit. The non-profit still exists. Now, I do think this is all super slimy and shitty and that if I had my way I'd fire both into the sun, but what they did was technically legal. And Elon only cares because he created his own direct competitor after they refused to make him CEO.

Two embattled narcissists going to court to fight over the scraps of their dying empires. Nice.

metametapraxis Apr 28, 2026 +3
If only they could both lose.

Funny how these "everything must be free market, government should not interfere with business Libertarian" types like Elon and Altman love to use our government funded court system to enforce their contracts and fight their personal battles. Not to mention also receiving alot of government grants.

erm, im no libertarian but part of libertarian philosophy is that governments have to enforce contracts. Like literally the sole duty of government is to enforce non-violence and make sure contracts work. contracts are sacred to libertarians and both are them are consistent in this regard

I'm going off their own website: https://www.libertarianism.org/topics/voluntary-contract-enforcement Their philosophy seems to be "private enforcement of contracts" rather than government.

How much that of it is hogwash is proven by that roman fire chief slash arsonist who refused to put out a fire they set unless the deed was handed over to them. That is libertarian reality the rest is just smoke and mirrors

Fun-Can-8935 Apr 27, 2026 +4
i dont agree with liberterians. i do think its hogwash. just pointing out a flaw in OP comment, because, yknow, libertarians really like contracts to be enforced

slurtybartfarst Apr 27, 2026 +4
I hope they both lose

As much as I dislike Elon Musk he does have a valid point with this one.

Not sure why he's bothering to care about "philanthropy" given he's explicitly stated he thinks empathy is the greatest weakness of the West

MaximusBiscuits Apr 27, 2026 +8
He doesn’t care. This is just a good way to hurt a competitor

Can this be resolved with a battle to the death?
2
darkpheonix262 Apr 27, 2026 +2

2
Horizon_MGB Apr 27, 2026 +2

Thunderdome. Two men enter, one man leave.

Twiroxi Apr 27, 2026 +2
No matter who wins, we all lose

They should both bring AI lawyers and see what happens. Maybe an AI judge too.

Is there anyone who has actually seen both their penises? If so, they could just go ahead and tell us whose is bigger, and it'd be a lot easier.

This is basically Commodus fighting Commodus in the final arena battle - a couple of sniveling weak dorks trying to pretend they're very strong and manly.

ConstantinValdor405 Apr 27, 2026 +1
Just have them fight to the death. Not to win the case. So they both go away. Trial by combat.
