We could still save us, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But according to people like Elon Musk and Sam Altman, doing so would actually be worse for us. And since we as a whole still think you must be brainwashed to question that, we can expect things to get worse before they get better.

It's a dumb world. We all know these people are the problem but none of us have the power to remove them from there.
5
happy_dad857 13 hr ago +4
Or do we? I refuse to believe that if enough of us came together and fought to remove these people from their positions of power, we couldn’t do it. We outnumber them. Call me crazy, but it could be done if enough of us wanted it and were willing to fight for it.

It’s like watching two Bond villains fight over who gets to own the laser that might accidentally destroy the moon. One wants to give the laser to everyone (Musk), and the other wants to lease it to Microsoft (Altman). The fact that Judge Rogers called it "billionaires versus billionaires" in a preliminary hearing really sums up the "NICE day" energy of this whole trial.

>The civil lawsuit accuses Altman, OpenAI's CEO, and his top lieutenant, Greg Brockman, of double-crossing Musk by straying from the San Francisco company's founding mission to be an altruistic steward of a revolutionary technology. The lawsuit alleges they shifted into a moneymaking mode behind his back. Isn't it a requirement of a Silicon Valley CEO to abandon their benevolent ethos? Google's motto used to be "don't be evil". Elon Musk wanted a multiplanetary society. Peter Thiel wanted floating micronation utopias. Seems like Altman is just following the herd.

He named his surveillance company after the orb Sauron used to corrupt the mind of Saruman. Is it really a surprise that he took the wrong lesson from other works of fiction too?
49
PaleCommission150 1 day ago +13
To be fair, the Palantiri were originally gifts from the Elves to the men of Gondor who helped fight in the War of Wrath that helped push Melkor into the outer void for good. They were originally a kind communication system for coordinating efforts across the vast reaches of the realm but eventually corrupted by Sauron. I think most of the things Feanor made, it is hinted that he made the Palantiri, were too powerful for mortals to use long term. Even the Silmarils which held the light of the two trees had the unintended side effects.
13
willstr1 1 day ago +32
Fair, but presumably Thiel is aware of the eventual corruption by Sauron so choosing that name while knowing that result is still an alarming decision. >They were originally a kind communication system for coordinating efforts across the vast reaches of the realm but eventually corrupted by Sauron. What an accurate metaphor for social media written long before social media existed.

>Elon Musk wanted a multiplanetary society. Peter Thiel wanted floating micronation utopias. To be extremely clear, those aren't inherently benevolent things, and musk and thiel certainly didn't want them for benevolent reasons. They're only interested in creating "other places to live" insofar as in them they could have their perfect unregulated neofeudalist tech-lord empires where they can finally be the little God Kings they've always vainly imagined themselves to be, beholden to no greater authority that might limit their capacity to abuse whatever serfs they bring with them

Musk is a piece of shit and wrong most of the time, but you calling openia "company" is precisely his point: it was founded as non profit organization and as such raised a lot of money. Whoever funded openai before the change got scammed. This is a "broken clock twice a day" situation.

Elon: Tesla is not a car company.  Altman: OpenAI is not a nonprofit.  Elon: No, not like that.
7
Extreme-Outrageous 1 day ago +33
Open AI was a 501c3. Google (then Alphabet) was always a C corporation. To change your corporate structure is a fairly radical restructuring. Incredibly abusive by Altman. And I loathe Musk.
33
PaleCommission150 1 day ago +3
I think Alman's lawyers will argue that AI is such a fast moving and emerging technology it is not possible due to compute requirements to keep the tech non profit. The data centers are massively expensive, the chips are too. Due to the frontier nature of the technology they are helping to shape and pioneer changing the corp structure is necessary at this point to keep operating... " something like that.
3
Extreme-Outrageous 1 day ago +15
Sure. But then it should have never been a nonprofit. And a smart person would know that. Altman knew what he was doing. It was always the plan to get free money at the beginning and then change when needed.
15
MerlinsMentor 21 hr ago +5
> I think Alman's lawyers will argue that AI is such a fast moving and emerging technology it is not possible due to compute requirements to keep the tech non profit. This is just mealy-mouthed lawyer-speak for "the law shouldn't apply to me, because I'm special." Not that Altman's lawyers won't say it -- I think you're right that they will. Doesn't make it anything other than claiming privilege because they're "special", though.

I have a hard time believing Elon is really doing this because he truly wanted the venture to be altruistic. Is he just trying to cash in on the money the company is making? Asking for $100 billion in damages when he only invested $38 million sure makes it seem that way.
4
TheBirminghamBear 1 day ago +9
> Isn't it a requirement of a Silicon Valley CEO to abandon their benevolent ethos? Sorta kinda. It's more like Silicon Valley CEOs start out as evil people who create a company that pretends to be moral so it can attract all the decent, smrat people necessary to build it, and once it grows large enough that it is shielded by money they just drop the pretense.

A motto is different than a stated goal. If your motto is "improving people's lives", I give you a million dollars and then you use it to kickstart a healthcare company, I can't complain. However, if you tell me you want money to research cancer, I give you a million dollars, and you do your healthcare company, I have a case there. You said my money was going to go towards a goal and it was a lie. Of course Musk's true intention is to boycott a competitor, but he has a case - whether a judge thinks that case is solid enough is a different issue, ofc.

The fight is over the origins of OpenAI as a non-profit and their status now as a for-profit company. OpenAI's original assets were built with tax-exempt donations and public benefit in mind and so they must remain dedicated to charitable purposes... So the big hurdle is **Asset Disposition**. When they were converting, OpenAI had to transfer all assets to another 501(c)(3) organization -OR- Pay fair market value for any assets it wants to retain in the new for-profit entity. The rest is paperwork with the state and the IRS.

I find it "ironic". Musk milks Tesla shareholders to buy companies like Twitter. Tesla shareholders don't receive anything in return. As they say, "what goes around....comes around". Edit: And the best part is that he is going to do it all over again with SpaceX IPO. That's why he wants part of the Nasdaq 100 and other indexes. ETFs and other funds will be forced to buy his overpriced SpaceX stock.
17
Wetzilla 23 hr ago +3
Well, they first created a for profit subsidy of the OpenAi Foundation. Then they spun that off into a PBC and gave the OpenAi foundation 26% ownership. What we currently call OpenAI did not start out as a non-profit. The non-profit still exists. Now, I do think this is all super slimy and shitty and that if I had my way I'd fire both into the sun, but what they did was technically legal. And Elon only cares because he created his own direct competitor after they refused to make him CEO.
