To be fair, the US does carry a lot of weight and can in fact enforce a lot of things diplomatically. Israel depends heavily on the military might of its US ally.
But for claiming to be such a good deal maker, Trump doesn't understand he has to give his counterpart the opportunity to save face. Instead he is obsessed with publicly humiliating everyone and risking (and earning) defiance for it.
