This move sets the groundwork for being able to return Syrian refugees.

I mean, if Syria's economy recovers some people will want to go back.  Especially people that haven't been in Europe for that long.

Yeah, hate to break it to you buddy pal but i dont think many will go back. Healthcare, Safety and Economy are way too good in Europe.

This. Europe needs to stop funding social security and various other programmes. I’ve already seen online comments in my country that are unfavourable towards asylum seekers.

I feel like demolishing European social services because of a few migrants is likely going to create more problems than it solves. And the "mass migration" a lot of people are talking about in Europe is like, 5-10% of people being nonwhite. I live in Toronto, which is about 50% non-Canadian-born (and mostly non-white), and while things are certainly expensive, quality of life is still quite high even in areas that have large immigrant communities.

Do note there is a difference in being a refugee or an emigrant.

To trade what exactly? More highly educated engineers? What is to sale in Syria, or if they're buying, with what money?

You think an economy of 8 million workers produces nothing of value? Apart from agricultural products they also export phosphate, which is getting pretty important right now

Not to mention the people who left had the means to do so. Syria has a vested interest in enticing its people back so they can put them back to work in their economy.

Of course it can produce value. But phosphate I can get elsewhere. Labor I can get elsewhere, just as c**** and let's not hide behind fingers, please, probably safer, with less language barriers and quicker integration. It is simply a cost vs value question I am asking: what is Europe getting out of it?

So you think buying products from Syria means they are going to produce them in europ or something? Why do they need to integrate to buy and sell stuff? And yes, you can also get the phosphate from China and maroccp, but not completely depending on 1 or 2 trade partners for an absolutely essential good is a good thing

I wonder if trade agreements add legitimacy to an application for an IMF loan? That's how I would guess a country in need would get some initial funding.
