For anyone who watched or tried to watch The Idol, it’s no surprise.
With the success of Euphoria Sam Levinson seems to be confused why people loved, feel like he went deeper in soft core rather then characters.

I can only assume that when the reality network bought HBO and slashed experienced staff and funding for c**** easy reality tv, they didn't have the best executive in charge who allowed the Weeknd to redo the show when it was already 80% finished and reshoot it all almost doubling the budget.
Allegedly, some idiot at the top gave Levinson a blank check. Idiot.

Skins is perfect. Especially if you're British. I was the same age as the actors when the show came out and I think most kids my age would agree it was a spot on representation ot being a teen in the mid 2000s. I have never seen the show and I didn’t know that it’s about high school kids / minors.
Regardless that the actors are adults, I think it’s weird that the show portrays underage nudity.

+46
When season 1 came out it was praised for the portrayal of *this* (at the time) generation’s more modern teen struggles in a post-social media era. It was telling stories that *some* modern teens could relate to (plus a ton of sex and drugs).
Then season 2 came out and it just felt gross. Like… everything was dialed to 11 and had no purpose other than shock value. It devolved into borderline fetishism and softcore p***.
46
GoldandBlue4 days ago

yeah season 1 was excessive but it focused more on Zendaya and her addiction. The sub plots were over the top but whatever. Season 2 just became "Teen girls f***!!!!!". Like OK, but why do you seem to glamorize it so much?
24
pruneden4 days ago
+86
It kinda was, but the show was incredibly popular with terminally online teenagers/ college students who all refused to hear any criticism about it. That affected most of the discourse surrounding the show and people gave it a lot more credit than it deserved. The cinematography, music, and Zendeya’s arc are legitimately good, but the rest of the stories in the show are just Levinson’s weird sexual fantasies involving teenagers. If it wasn’t for Zendeya that show would not have gotten a second season and I think even the most die hard fans will admit that.

It had a criticism from the start. It was never super popular with critics but season 1 at least felt narratively cohesive. These troubled kids dealing with issues that seem far bigger than they are emotionally or mentally mature enough to handle.
But even from the start it painted this excessive world where every high school has multiple sex scandals, every girl is on O*******, every guy is rapist, and every school is on brink of drug wars breaking out in the hallways. It was cartoonishly over the top.
But it looked cool.
32
Paleblood_Hunt3 days ago
+5
Why is every description of the show so hyperbolic? It’s literally *one group* of girls in one high school and like a handful of male characters, only one of which is a true through and though scumbag but they even give him a pretty deep reason for his awful behavior.
Literally not once was there a drug war in a school, there is one girl who had a drug problem and she is friends with a drug dealer they used to go to school with who gets in deep shit at the end… in his own house… where he deals drugs from.

Same. The cinematography was great. I could see how this season doesn’t live up to expectations though with some characters not returning, huge time gap, controversy happening behind the scenes, etc. but it’s annoying when people try to rewrite history like this wasn’t praised when it first released.

No way!!!
You guys went into watching this expecting depth????
This show was made for Listnookors to yank it to while going online and posting how creepy it is.

i mean i do neither of those things. i watched it because i thought zendaya was really great and the drug addiction stuff was compelling to me. and the show has some strong directorial and cinematography choices, as well as an incredible soundtrack and original score. but the longer it goes, the more shallow it feels for anyone not named rue/zendaya.

My ex watched this and I was like wtf. No I don’t want to watch high schoolers have sex, get raped or do drugs. I’ve always thought the guy who writes this is a creep. Stories like these are gross and it’s weird if you like em so much that you’d defend watching supposed teen sex/r*** bc of how well it’s.. filmed and edited? Gross

The show has always been excessive and overly-stylized in EVERY aspect and I have loved every moment. Glad it’s continuing to be provocative and incendiary.
Do people really believe a show like this is causing societal damage?

Got a taste of Sam Levinson’s sensationalist style in Assassination Nation, and Euphoria feels like a continuation of that same style. He seems convinced he’s creating something profound that captures the emotional and cultural reality of this generation, but really comes off as hollow spectacles

I started noticing it in Season 2. So many character arcs feel overly fixated on sex, and it gets old fast. The drug dealer storyline is the only one that still feels solid.

I was sleeping at a 'friends' bed months ago and she watches things to fall asleep to and she put on some episode of euphoria that was about a party in which after some fratboys pretend r*** some guy in his room with his girlfriend watching.
And you telling me it goes down from there?

i mean that in and of itself is not a bad thing, that storyline was about hazing and performative masculinity and the way it broke down that character. unfortunately too often the show doesn't delve deeper into issues and stays more surface level. whether that's good or not, i'll let someone else decide.

I liked this show, but most shows start to come apart at the third season

i’m gonna keep it completely real, i know that if Sam snapped his fingers and said season 4 the whole cast would come running back. so i don’t feel the slightest bit bad at these bomb reviews!

This show has been over popularized since the beginning. It was never that good, the media just over hyped it. Season one was ok, that’s it. Angus cloud was the best part.
