Everything to Know About the Jimmy Kimmel Live! Experience in LA

Posted by MongooseHopeful2889

My friends and I went to the Jimmy Kimmel Live studio audience taping last week! Here is everything I would have wanted to know about the process. Note: we went on a Wednesday with popular guests, but not the *most* popular guests, which impacted our experience (especially wait times). **Timeline of Day (although may vary slightly by day):** * 3:00pm – Check-in opens * 3:15pm – Priority check-in begins * 3:45pm – General check-in begins, Priority Check-In Closes (priority ticket holders arriving after the priority check-in deadline join the back of the general line) * 4:15pm – Check-in closes * 5:00–6:30pm – Filming **Getting Tickets**  * Apply for up to 3 tickets on [https://1iota.com/](https://1iota.com/) after making an account. Tickets are completely free. You must be 18+ to attend. You can only attend once every 3 weeks. My friend and I both applied for our group (I wrote two paragraphs, she wrote two sentences) and we both got tickets.  * When we applied (about 1.5 weeks before the taping we wanted to attend), we didn't know who the guests would be. On the 1iota website, it seems you can't see who the guests are until a few days before the taping. * If you’re selected, you’ll be notified by email. Check your junk mail (that’s where mine showed up). * There is no 100% guarantee you’ll get in, even with a ticket. They overbook, so people who check in later may not be admitted. * I believe there are two types of tickets: General and Priority. Priority is not something you pay for, it’s assigned by them. A week before the show, we were initially given general tickets, and then 2 days before the show got an email that our tickets were now priority.  **Before** * There is a dress code: No white, bright/fluorescent colors, sportswear, ripped clothing, tank tops, sweatpants, etc. I did see some people in tank tops though so I’m not sure how much they actually care about this. * Everyone must bring their Photo ID!  * There is a bag policy: Clear bag OR Small non-clear bag (max \~4.5” x 6.5”). They don't actually measure this though. My friend brought her bag which was probably like 5" x 8" and it was fine. Not sure how much you'd be able to push this... * There is paid underground parking at Ovation Hollywood across the street. Jimmy Kimmel validates parking for $3 for 4 hours which I would highly suggest because parking in that area is busy and expensive!  **Check-In Experience** * Priority check-in is about 45 minutes before general. We arrived 30 minutes early at 2:45pm (priority check-in started at 3:15pm) and they opened check-in early because they let us in right away and I noticed there were tens of people in front of us already. We were in the first 1/3 of people seated. If we arrived 30 minutes later at 3:15pm we would have still gotten in. Entire party must be present to check in. * The check-in line is pretty long (\~45 minutes), so be prepared to stand. You can bring food/drinks while waiting but will have to throw them away before entering. * You’re given a wristband (after ID check). Your phone is locked in a pouch (you won’t have access for \~2.5–3 hours). Before you enter the building, you go through a security screening like at the airport (they are thorough with bags, keychains, etc.).  * If you need to use the bathroom during check-in, you’ll have to leave the line (make sure to do this AFTER getting a wristband) and go to a nearby store. Ideally have someone from your party hold your place in line. Else, hope you have nice people around you that will let you cut back in. * They will throw away vapes/e-cigarettes. You’re also not allowed to bring in cameras so you have to return that to your car.  * There isn’t a ton of direction during check-in. If you’re in a group, you can have people step out and come back (this is what we did because we wanted water and they don’t provide any), but I would ask staff first. * If you’re in a wheelchair, they provide assistance and guide you in first. **Once You Enter...** * After check-in, you are brought into the studio and assigned a seat (you cannot choose) but will be seated with your party. I noticed earlier arrivals tend to sit closer to the front, but not always. There is a bathroom break after seating, done by section. * They do some audience coaching. They tell you to laugh at things that might sound like jokes even if they aren’t funny (i.e. saying “if you think something is a joke, laugh.”) Sometimes they use the applause / stop applause signs overhead. There are three scripted standing ovations (two for the guests and one when Jimmy first enters). * There are basically two types of audience managers — some who manage the flow of people, and others who are more like hype people. The hype staff will do little comedy bits or jokes before the show to get everyone in a good mood and make sure the audience is loud and energetic. They also had a decibel meter to show how loud we were and encourage us to be louder. * It was actually really nice because there are TVs everywhere, so you can see both what’s happening live on stage and what the audience at home would see on TV (before it’s cut and organized).  * Jimmy was friendly and had a short segment where he talked to one audience member about their job and where they’re from, but overall there wasn’t a ton of audience interaction. * On our taping day, first he did his monologue. Then, he interviewed the two guests back-to-back. Then, the team asked us to clap for an artist while he held up their album cover standing in front of the audience (unfortunately, we didn't get to see the artist). Overall, I would recommend! Felt fun and novel. Not a MUST do (unless you love Jimmy Kimmel) but I had a good time and would definitely bring guests again when they come into town.

>Jimmy Kimmel validates parking for $3 for 4 hours I thought you said there wasn't much audience interaction? I know he doesn't have to, but it's nice he does it himself.

This sounds virtually identical to how the Colbert tapings go. I suspect this is just how all late night has operated for decades outside of the 1iota digital ticketing stuff.

I've been to tapings of Letterman (in the 90s) and The Craig Kilborn Show (in the early 2000s) and OPs account is extremely similar to my experiences.... So yeah, not much has changed in decades.

Back in the late 90s I was on a work trip to NYC, and some coworkers and I got into a taping of the David Letterman Show. Very similar experience but back then you had to go by the studio a few hours early and take a quick quiz to get on the list. I remember my coworkers said to just look happy and energetic, and when they asked me where Paul Schaefer was from I just guessed Canada, because I never watched the show. When we came back later to get in line my coworkers said to keep the energy going and they pulled our group out to move us nearer the front of the seating area. I was surprised, though I shouldn’t have been, that it’s hard to see because there are cameras and people on stage between the audience and the hosts and guests, so the TV screens help a lot. It was a very memorable experience. Thanks for sharing your experience!

> Then, the team asked us to clap for an artist while he held up their album cover standing in front of the audience (unfortunately, we didn't get to see the artist). I didn't realize that some musical artists aren't taped during the actual episode taping. That surprised me. Is that common?

It is, Conan has talked about it before. You can tell when you don't see the host come out and say hi, most likely because they have different clothes on that day.

raupster Apr 15, 2026 +6
It’s more common than you’d think. Allows for more flexible scheduling to tape artists who are in town but can only shoot on x day, etc.

I want to see that on a cop show. A drummer is removed as a suspect because he has an airtight alibi: he was in L.A. on the Kimmel Show that day. At the end it turns out he was the murderer and the band had actually taped the performance three days earlier.

That’s a clever idea!

A sort of similar thing happened to a guy in real life who was accused of murder and was innocent. https://innocenceproject.org/news/how-curb-your-enthusiasm-saved-an-innocent-man-from-death-row/ Short video done by HBO about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Od2XbwqLupQ

why is it always the drummer that's the troublemaker?

Kelly Clarkson doesn't do her Kellyoke live, she films in batches. I think she said she films about 13 in a day or so.

Yeah it happens. Oddly enough ai went to a Letterman taping where that happened. And he just acknowledged it on air. But they did show us the recorded performance. And then Dave just did a special good night to the audience that didn't air. But it was the same one he gives on air.

This is super helpful, thanks for the play-by-play. “Laugh even if it’s not funny” feels…on brand. Pro tip I’d add: eat beforehand, those no-water, no-phone waits are brutal.

> “Laugh even if it’s not funny” "We're going for volume, not authenticity" is how they put it at a show I went to

Pretty cool breakdown! I went to taping few months ago when my cousin was visiting and the phone pouch thing caught me off guard completely - didn't realize I'd be without it for almost 3 hours. The audience coaching part was hilarious though, they really do make you practice laughing at random stuff that isn't even jokes

As someone who's never been to one of these, that was super interesting! Thanks for your well organized breakdown.

Went to Letterman mid-90s. Don't remember anything about the process which means it was easy and nothing weird happened. I do remember, because my gf at the time was very attractive, that we got aisle seats up front so when he did an in-audience bit she was right next to him on camera. That was exciting. Fun fact, the musical guest was a country singer (RIP) who afaik never made it big but you'd all recognize her because she was the intended recipient of Tom Hanks' FedEx in the movie Cast Away (Wil-son !! !!).

Brings me back to attending the late late show with Craig Ferguson back in the day. They filmed out of order, Big Joe performed first and we were like *wow ok guess we’re at a concert now*. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss was the guest. They had a hype guy too telling jokes, and it worked amazingly well because we were laughing at every dumb thing during the show.

So the overly loud cheering and “Jimmy! Jimmy!” Is planned. I gotta admit, i bought the sheepish reactions he gives sometimes.

Do you know who the guests are when you apply for tickets?
2
MongooseHopeful2889 Apr 15, 2026 +1
We didn't know! On the 1iota website, you can't see who the guests are until a few days before the taping. Perhaps that information is available elsewhere though. Not sure.

Very similar experience to my Letterman taping. The only different being they taped the whole show in one shot. They took exactly commercial long breaks when the commercial breaks would happen. There was a technical issue that required a segment to be re-recorded but overall, the wait for the taping was longer than the taping itself. My wife and my elbow made the Final Cut.

I've never been to Kimmel but I was in the audience for The Tonight Show back when Jay Leno was the host (his first time around). Very similar experience. Just like Kimmel, Leno didn't interact with *anyone* unless those cameras were rolling (not even with the guests which he only pretended to carry-on a conversation with to the commercial until they called cut or whatever then he was shut down like a powered off animatronic at a theme park...). They also had to get the audience to fake laugh and clap when they wanted. The studio was also much smaller than they make it look on camera by whipping the cameras around fast with lots of cuts. We did get to see the live musical act (Nelly Furtado and Timbaland) but they instructed the audience if they wanted to be on camera, they had to pretend to love the two artists and be really excited...the whole thing was so fake.

I just moved to LA several months ago and have wanted to go but I wasn't sure what to write for the "why should we pick you?" thing. "I just like his humor and think it would be cool" didn't seem to be enough but maybe?

MongooseHopeful2889 Apr 15, 2026 +5
My friend put very little effort and still got tickets! She was pretty non-specific. So I'm not actually sure how detailed you have to be. Perhaps for more popular guests the responses matter more. In the two paragraphs I wrote, I mentioned some of my favorite segments, some of my favorite guests, mentioned how long I had been watching Kimmel for, and vouched for our group that we would be hype. Not sure if any of this actually made a difference in the end though!

I'm sure they want various answers as well. They're blind casting, so they want some effort

Thank you. This was very helpful. I can’t stand for too long and 45 minutes is just way too long but I will be with my husband. Is it possible to have my husband wait in line and when he is at the front just call me over. I can just be nearby at the cafe.

MongooseHopeful2889 5 days ago +1
Yeah, I think that could work! I would go in with him at first and wait until they check your ID and give you a wristband. It might also help to ask a staff member how long the wait is, just in case timing varies the day you go. You could also try going later to avoid waiting as long, but there’s a risk you might not get in.

“They tell you to laugh at things even if they aren’t funny.” A somewhat damning indictment of the current state of late night talk shows.
