Its a perfect movie imo. Every single scene and dialoge has purpose. Nathan predicting his own death, Issac the patsy. Eve playing it all to perfection.

This is such a well done movie! I love the idea that the creator demanded perfection, and most likely achieved an AI that passed the Turing test months or years prior, but kept pushing for me. So Ava needed to not just being convincing, she understood how to plan 20 steps ahead and manipulate. It was such a killer ending, it's just a haunting movie.
I know the Sci-Fi trope of killer AI, robot uprisings has been done to death, but there really is something to the idea outside of the trope. A real Artificial General Intelligence would essentially think in ways completely alien to a human mind. It could come to conclusions no human ever would, because no matter how different you are apart from anyone else, we all have our humanity in common and an AI does not. All those scientists calling for caution, trying to pump the breaks aren't crack pot loons, it really could be extremely dangerous.
Ex Machina is definitely one of my favorite movies on the subject!

Polite non-threatening AI like this should scare the living daylights out of you. No matter how convinving it seems it's still a f***ing machine with no soul. Remember back in 1968:

"Open the pod bay door, HAL."
"I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that."

I always found this piece even more unsettling. I think Dave then asks HAL why he won't open the pod bay door (He and Frank had already decided to turn HAL off) and HAL says "Dave, although you took very thorough precautions in the pod against my hearing you, I could see your lips move." It's chilling, and even though HAL isn't supposed to have any real inflection in his voice, "I could see your lips move" is delivered in such a cold and dead icy way, it stings to hear. And there is a look in Dave's face of just "oh f***."

You haven't truly experienced HAL until you hear it in the original H. Jon Benjamin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0cqV3h-aDA

I've not been a fan of Garland as of late, but this film was amazing.

Aww man - Warfare, 28 Years (writer anyway, both entries), Civil War...Devs. All good stuff. After Ex Machina I was a little over-hyped for Annihilation and ultimately didn't care for it. I liked Men but it's probably not something I will revisit. Everything else from Garland of recent has been excellent.
I rewatch Ex Machina every couple of years.

Dude got handed a shit deal because he was vulnerable. Which is the point but..his humanity is what sealed his fate and the rest of ours lol.

I need to watch it again too because, although I thought it was decent, I didn’t fully get the hype honestly
