Mali’s been on the edge for years and it keeps barely making Western headlines. If you can, follow local reporters or support reputable aid groups, forgotten conflicts stay dangerous longest.

I was hoping they'd get more coverage in the wake of so many governments being overthrown recently, such as in Nepal.
It's a country that's had a turbulent history. Every time they seem on the right track politically and economically, there's a coup or uprising or natural disaster. I hope to visit the country someday.

>UN peacekeepers and French forces deployed to deal with the escalating insurgency left after the junta took over, and the military government hired Russian mercenaries to help tackle the insecurity.
>Mali is currently ruled by a military junta led by Gen Assimi Goïta, who first seized power in a coup in 2020 [...]
While I admit this to be a callous perspective: Consequences of your actions. This arrogant prick thought he could do better than the French and the World at large. While nobody sheds a tear for the previous government, the nutjob was either corrupt or stupid enough to rely on the Russians as a stabilising force.
I don't know how much propaganda you need to watch to even consider that a reasonable path to try.
Now they struggle to secure supply routes while the Russians focus on the gold supply and nothing else. Calling this a failed gamble would be an insult to gamblers.
