>"Although the court has ruled that the El Gamal family is detained in violation of the Constitution, the government continues to keep them locked up," Lee told ABC News. "We demand their immediate release." >Soliman, 45, is facing more than 100 charges including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and assault. He has pleaded not guilty. I mean, yeah, lock that dude up. But what did his... **checks article* >In court documents, Soliman’s family -- which includes five children aged 18, 16, 9, and 5-year-old twins -- 5-year-old twins do? 5? Come on, now.

It doesn’t seem to be mentioned in this article but they entered the country on a tourist visa which they overstayed. The government is trying to deport them but they’re fighting it via the appeals process: https://www.cbsnews.com/colorado/news/federal-magistrate-recommends-colorado-firebombing-suspects-family-released/ The quality of American reporting (especially on immigration) is shite even from major outlets. There have been a couple similar articles about people from my country (Ireland) detained by ICE and similarly most articles bury the relevant information.

So that gives literally anyone the right to put someone into a concentration camp?

It’s been reliably reported that many of these ICE facilities are inhumane and should be shut down and replaced with better quality facilities. With that said any country has the right to detain (under humane conditions) people who illegally overstay visas while they go through the appeals process until they’re deported. I saw in another thread people saying they should be granted asylum cos it would be “mean” to deport a single mother but that’s not grounds for asylum and would be a mockery of the system. Here in Europe we’ve had more than a decades experience of the asylum system being shamelessly exploited by bad actors

"Sure these places are unconstitutionally gross, but it's the right of the politicking class to lock children there for indeterminate periods of time!" - psychos around the world

Kids should ideally be kept in safe conditions. Of course that raises the question of how to check the ages of people with no documentation. A Somalian asylum seeker claimed to be kid with no paperwork here in Ireland then stabbed a teen to death. Authorities now believe he lied about his age so he could be housed with vulnerable kids: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c93d81ddlj8o.

this seems like an exception in which you cannot base policy like, we need to throw a 5 year old in a concentration camp because someone borderline to the age cutoff, *in ireland*, attacked a child? Would the stabbing be ok if the Somalian asylum seeker was underage? It's just encouraging suspicion and fear to let the fascists do what they want with less oversight and resistance if we're being honest with ourselves. We're allowing them to dictate to us that every immigrant child could be an adult killer, and using that to justify atrocities.

I just happened to randomly see this story (https://www.irishtimes.com/crime-law/courts/2026/04/21/asylum-seeker-in-childrens-facility-despite-tuslas-belief-he-is-an-adult-judge-told/). I don’t know what the answer is tbh. It’s a difficult, complicated situation. But I do know that if Ireland/Europe doesn’t make big changes soon the people are gonna vote the far right in which is bad for everyone

We could embrace what Obama started and Biden expanded, broader screening measures with more funding for staff and judges. Conservatives the world over chop the practical support for immigration, highlight eventual failures as evidence to introduce brutal, dehumanizing measures and cut funding for practical oversight and processing. And intentionally let it compound, systemic failures leading to more crackdowns and funding shifts leading to systemic failures leading to more crackdowns and funding shifts. Austerity, tax collection, environment, diplomacy, it's a common pattern across many issues. The classic grift they sell is that either we do the worst possible solution, or nothing, and there are no other options despite their opposition routinely improving conditions with proactive policies. Pro-conservative media highlights anti-conservative failures to endorse conservative policies.

Oh so you’re not even from our country, advocating for OUR neighbors to be locked IN CONCENTRATION CAMPS.

Was this guy our neighbor?

There are a lot of them over there that are also doing the "gotta keep things white" that is happening here.

I’m not Murican so don’t really care what happens internally but for the good of global peace I’d rather have an Obama type US president. Obama was hugely successful in 2 elections in part by being tough (but fair) on illegal immigration. Since then the Democrats have cowered in fear to a small, fringe group who are very vocal online. As it stands I won’t be surprised if the Dems campaign in 2028 on “Open borders for all” and lose a landslide to Ivanka Trump. Which is why I think Europe needs to invest in our own defence and prepare to stand alone. But that’s another story

They could have skipped the facility and opted for self deportation. And they should.

please note that this works *sometimes* There are tons of people who have been hauled off to our concentration camps that want to self-deport but aren't given the option to. Either held for months in horrific conditions or "disappeared"

So what?

Especially weird framing to bring up these people continuing to be jailed illegally as if it has any bearing on the awful thing someone else did

Holy give this man a vasectomy!  Edit - What the hell dumpster fire did I come back to?  Crazy how this became so political when it was a simple joke about a man with so many kids. I can't even afford one!

That would be socialism

Actually, it would be eugenics.

Wouldn’t exactly be a first for the US, even in recent years. https://www.ild.org/immigrant-legal-defense-blog/forced-hysterectomies-underscore-horrors-of-immigrant-detention

I thought eugenics was for ethnic/racial purposes as opposed to simply population control?
-26
LOOKATMEDAMMIT 23 hr ago +17
Also classist and ableist as well.
17
_TheWileyWombat_ 23 hr ago -14
So how does that apply here?

LOOKATMEDAMMIT 23 hr ago +9
I was just saying that eugenics was used for more than just racial and ethnic purposes.

Anytime anyone tries to do population control, it automatically becomes one of, or a combination of, a classist, racist, or ablist system, at the very least. Eugenics is not just racial, it is any attempt to manage who has children in a society to "improve" society. Who decides who can't have kids? And what are the parameters?  Do you need a college degree but college costs a ton of money? Even just a GED can be a struggle for folk who needed to drop out to work as teenagers. Suddenly being poor means you can't have kids. Do you need to be healthy? What determines healthy? Is being autistic healthy? What about being gender non-conforming? Both of those things have been or are classified as forms of disability. Is it only used on criminals? Well then who decides which crimes deserve it? And what about false convictions? The issue with any attempt at population control through state-sanctioned sterilization is it will always become an authoritarian system used to abuse the most vulnerable parts of the population.

eugenics and executions are two things that can only exist if you entirely trust the government to always be correct in every circumstance, or believe that the system's benefit is worth an acceptable number of innocent deaths. We can toss war in there as well. Archaic institutions for old men to play with superiority and power at the expense of the people.

Eugenics is also killing reproduction. Its not just straight death. It can be a slow demise of the group by not allowing them to breed. They did this to indigenous people, both eugenics and genocide which also doesn't require full on murder.

Aliens, aliens, aliens. The fascists love to dehumanize. You cannot punish a family for the crimes of a member. I hate nazi scum.

I don’t understand why people are advocating to keep a terrorist’s family in our country. If their home country is so bad, this piece of shit should have thought twice before doing what he did.

paranoid_potato 21 hr ago +20
Yeah thats so crazy that people think a literal 5 year old shouldn't be punished for a crime one of their parents committed.

Cowboy-as-a-cat 21 hr ago +6
In my head this is super gray area, but I could see people saying the family did nothing and are innocent until proven guilty. Can’t lock people for crimes they someone else committed. The FBI even said there’s no evidence the family knew about the attack before it happened. They’re also going through the asylum seeking process and staying here even though they overstayed their visas. This is the part where it’s legally gray. They shouldn’t be detained indefinitely, rather they can be deported - per the law. But since they have a pending asylum seeking case, the law also protects people with that status from being deported. So legally they can’t be deported right now. To me it seems the government has detained them for months because they want to, not because they legally have to. So imo if it was me I would think the situation is total bs.
