The crazy thing is, between this and all the signal stuff, this administration has had one of the worst cyber security standards and have seen the most compromising of their accounts over any other administration.

One of the axioms of cybersecurity is that people are the biggest vulnerability in any system. Its not hard to figure out why there are so many incidents with this admin.
172
ericf505 Mar 27, 2026 +71
I agree, I have always been told: "Cyber security is not a technical issue, but a user issue." With this administration, it does not surprise me. I wonder how much malware is sitting in our government systems because they needed to 'download some more RAM'.

had a prof in grad school that told us what his old cybersecurity firm would do when making proposals to new clients. when they would go to the offices of prospective clients they would drop a few flash drives around the office, like under tables in conference rooms, bathrooms, or break rooms. one of the files in it would be called something like "employee_salaries.xlsx" and when someone opened it it would immediately send an email from their computer to the company contact they were negotiations with.

Within a month they were given doge employees with no background check full access to the entire government with no supervision. Just wild stuff
15
dartdoug Mar 27, 2026 +16
As someone who has oversight of cyber security, one of the things we have to do sometimes is tell people "No, you can't do that." When asked, I'm happy to explain the reasoning. Sometimes people think the rules we enforce are borderline paranoid fantasy but ultimately things are kept safer as a result. But all of this takes the backing of upper management AND there have to be penalties if employees violate the rules. Do you think anyone in cyber security in this Administration gets the backing of the higher ups? And will someone who violates the protocols face consequences? Answer: No to both.

To some degree they’ve always only hated our dumbass leaders. The “they want all Americans to die”/“they hate America”/“they threaten America’s way of life” is pretty much American propaganda. TBC I’m not an apologist for other things they’ve done or oppression in their own views and policies. I’m saying just specific to what you’re getting at. I always recall that Ali Khamenei went out of his way to explain this in like 2019. On the Death To America rallying cry: “It means death to America’s rulers … we have nothing against the American people,” It always seemed to me like it wouldn’t be effective misdirection for their Supreme Leader to talk like this unless it held some truth. Maybe I’m super wrong though. I have a good grasp of geopolitics but I’m by no means an expert on Iranian<>US specific relations and propaganda.
31
bejammin075 Mar 27, 2026 +46
We should also remember that the main reason they had the revolution in 1979 was because the US & CIA toppled their leader in 1953, we installed a brutal dictator. When we instigated this coup in 1953, they had a much more secular government, with a popular & elected leader with a 95% approval rating.

Oddworld777 Mar 27, 2026 +28

28
crisperfest Mar 27, 2026 +9
Why did the US do that? I have no idea, but my first guess would be oil.
9
bejammin075 Mar 27, 2026 +8
Yep. Iranians had realized they were getting screwed out of lot of money the way their oil deals were setup with Western companies. They nationalized their oil production, which was a grave sin to the US. I think England had just done the same with their coal, but nobody invaded England. So then the US engineered a coup to install a dictator that would give the Western companies cheaper oil.
8
EunuchsProgramer Mar 27, 2026 +8
Khomeini thought Western Culture was pure evil, especially women's dress and sexual liberation. The West and women's legs became symbols and justification to consolidate power and silence opposition. The Reactionaries in Iran oppose everything from the Enlightenment to swimsuits and shopping malls. The Great Satan is absolutely not limited to just Western leaders. https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/abs/critical-introduction-to-khomeini/khomeini-and-the-west/41E5A25E505AC13DC5B78BC9676BC01E

Iran is also primarily interested in projecting power internally, not externally. This is a general trend for authoritarian governments. They tend to design their militaries around making it painful to invade, but no capability to exert power externally except occasionally against a smaller neighbor in an irredentist campaign (which will often be a neighbor that does have historical ties, which carries with it roads/other favorable aspects to invasion, often small or no military, and little capability to resist, so it doesn’t take a large or powerful military to execute that campaign). Its military has explicitly been designed for 1) internal repression, and 2) for defending against the sort of war that’s occurring now. It has never been developed with capability to project power in a meaningful way. Iran’s main beef with the US has always been its meddling in the Middle East, particularly in ways that reduces Iran’s capability to operate independently (e.g. sanctions). Its proxy groups are largely oriented to keep the US/Israel from boxing in Iran, both militarily and also to bolster Shia minorities to keep them politically relevant (and therefore keep the governments at least partially sympathetic to Iran, keeping trade routes open, etc.). Remember it’s conventional military doesn’t have the capability to do exert power externally, so proxy groups allows it to achieve the objective of not being boxed it by keeping the conflicts external. They saw what happened in Iraq and Libya, and what’s been happening in Syria. Israel and the US have been clear and definite threats to Iran’s independence and prosperity (on their own terms). When Iranian leaders think Western culture is pure evil, they’re primarily interested in keeping it out of Iran, not attacking it outside of Iran. At least a part of that is motivated by a desire to keep Western soft power from affecting it.

A better troll move would be to release files with only the redactions required by the law (that they'd be under no obligation to follow, btw...but that would only make it more beautiful). Bonus points if they attach a note about how their redaction team is now taking some time off to consult with their spiritual advisors about appropriate ritual purification.

"Kash Patel had his personal email hacked by a group of Iran-backed hackers, who published photographs of the FBI director and other documents to the internet." "The group, Handala Hack Team, claimed responsibility for the security breach and said Patel "will now find his name among the list of successfully hacked victims." "A Justice Department official confirmed to *Reuters* that Patel's email had been breached and said the material published online appeared authentic." “The so called ‘impenetrable’ systems of the FBI were brought to their knees in a matter of hours by our team,” the hackers wrote. “All personal and confidential information of Kash Patel, including emails, documents, conversations, and even classified files, is now available for public download.” "The group claimed the attack had been in response to the FBI “proudly” seizing its domains and announcing a $10 million reward for information on its members, which it described as a “ridiculous show.” “This is the security the U.S. government boasts about?” the hackers added. "Handala, which calls itself a group of pro-Palestinian vigilante hackers, is considered by Western researchers to be one of several personas used by Iranian ‌government cyberintelligence units." A sampling: [https://x.com/disclosetv/status/2037533001312026827?s=20](https://x.com/disclosetv/status/2037533001312026827?s=20) "The Gmail address the hackers say they accessed matches an address previously linked to Patel in older data breaches tracked by the dark web intelligence firm District 4 Labs. A sample of the material appears to include a mix of personal and work-related correspondence dating from 2010 to 2019. The scope of the breach and how the account was accessed were not immediately clear." If true I'm very exhausted with the ruling class *rules for thee and not for me* thing. Can you imagine if you had work related documents like IP, other employees socials, whatever on your personal Gmail and the absolute shit show it would be if it got hacked? 5
dannyb_prodigy Mar 27, 2026 +11
>even classified files That is just a claim of the hacker group. I haven’t seen independent reporting yet that indicates classified files were actually obtained. In general, the reporting I’ve seen dates the leaked emails from 2010 to 2019 (before Kash’s time as FBI director).
11
kevinnoir Mar 27, 2026 +9
To be fair, its the smart move to claim classified stuff if you're looking to just cause chaos! Even the suggestion plants that seed and the US government isnt the most trustworthy these days in the denial. This is the kind of thing Iran has been planning for, for DECADES. They have tons of plans for what they knew would be the inevitable attack from Israel and/or the US. Bad luck for America that they have the LEAST capable people in charge in the countries history.

mrmagos Mar 27, 2026 +191
As a sysadmin, I don't find this particularly egregious. I don't understand when people use their work email for personal correspondence and non-work purposes. Keep your work and personal life separate. That said, I would hope that the FBI Director's personal email account would be better secured than the average person. This was a state-sponsored targeted attack, though. The purpose was to embarrass and make him look incompetent, not that he needed any help in the latter department.
191

We are talking about the Trump admin... During his first term, Trump didn't like using the secure Blackberry devices because it wouldn't let him use *Twitter*. During this term Hegseth was sharing secure info on Signal. It wouldn't surprise me if Patel was using his personal email in a "professional" capacity to get around record keeping. Which I believe this admin has already been caught doing. There is also the possibility that group claiming to have breached his email used social engineering to decipher his password based on his social media posts or maybe they sniffed his passwords while he was using an unsecured device or network.
19
Korzag Mar 27, 2026 +18
Yeah... I'm really annoyed at this "breaking news". Getting into a gmail account is not in slightest the same as getting into his FBI email. Granted I wouldn't be surprised if he was doing federal business from that email or has dirt spilled on him from his personal account being exposed to the world.
18
slipperyMonkey07 Mar 27, 2026 +5
Would not be surprised at all if he clicked a phishing link. This is basically the same as every time there is a story that signal was "hacked." Reality is someone fell for a scam.

You can click the link and still see or copy the link and add the word "cancel" right after the X in the address. It'll pull it up and allow you to view the entire post.

If their smart they release enough to prove they did it, and then keep the really bad/damaging hostage as part of the negotiations.

TheSwampTramp Mar 27, 2026 +73
If they were *really* smart, they’d hack the Trump Files (feat. Epstein) and sit back while America destroyed itself.

VaGaBonD2 Mar 27, 2026 +27
Victor Gao, the chinese correspondent, hinted that China has them in a Craddle interview. That everything one day has to go out in the sun and wait.
27
TheSwampTramp Mar 27, 2026 +37
If they truly have them and haven’t released them then f*** them. F*** everyone who is sitting on this to feather their own nests or protect pedos
37
NEClamChowderAVPD Mar 27, 2026 +18
I agree. All the threats of “Trump would be destroyed if everyone knew what’s *really* in the files that I’ve seen but won’t share. But I have seen them and they’re bad. Don’t make me release them because I’ll do it” have gotten so old. It’s so obvious every single one of the them are using the files as leverage instead of just doing the right thing. Idk if it’s all just political theater but I think most of us can see these threats for what they actually are. I truly don’t know how these people sleep at night. Especially if they have seen the un-redacted files like they claim and continue to enable Trump and enrich themselves. It’s disgusting.

Unless they got into an email account he hasn't used since 2019, I can't tell which.

Ugly as ever too

Personally embarrassing but nothing damaging, yet.

Those aren’t bad. Guess it takes time to get to the good stuff.

TheSwampTramp Mar 27, 2026 +9
They’re just corny. From what I have seen online, it appears to possibly be limited to things from 2010-2019

TheArchitect_7 Mar 27, 2026 +14
Unfortunately these people are wise to email now and use signal and other tools. Golden age is over
14
rainshowers_5_peace Mar 27, 2026 +5
Every article I've read says the newest things are from 2019. They're either in an old account or are holding things people want to see ransom.

33
Stunning_Mast2001 Mar 27, 2026 +34
This is a good time to remember that unlike Obama and other presidents who try to choose actually smart and qualified people for government, Trump chooses dumb and unqualified people who are personally loyal to him, so that no one ever shows him up

If Iran really wants to stick it to Trump they should hack into major hospitals and credit card systems and delete the debt of the American people. That would sure show us…
36
Chronis67 Mar 27, 2026 +7
Trump would take credit for fixing the economy 😂

AceSidewinder13 Mar 27, 2026 +12
Don't worry folks. Everything is fine. There's no way there's work correspondence in his personal email. No politicians do that so we should be safe.

iran if you're listening, release the files!

I'd love SNL to get Aziz Ansari in. Kash is the living incarnation of Tom Haverford, but without any of his redeeming qualities.
21
Tommyblahblah Mar 27, 2026 +8
Even I could have guessed that his password was: "Femalebodyinspector#1!"
8
Tremolat Mar 27, 2026 +7
Likely hugely misleading. The hackers released only Kash's emails. That doesn't mean his was the only inbox compromised.

Every Senator who voted yes on this clown, needs to lose their seat. That is the least the people in this country can do.
8
robcwag Mar 27, 2026 +9
Considering this administration has essentially fired everyone in charge that had a brain, I am not surprised at all. Kegsbreath and the Signal app was just the tip of the iceberg. When you have dolts such as these, there is no level of security that can defend against utter blathering stupidity.
9
Spiderbanana Mar 27, 2026 +8
Please, oh please, tell me there is at least one classified document (and hopefully something that doesn't endanger anyone) on his PERSONAL email box.

Patel: One. Iran: One. Russia: One. Patel: Two. Iran: Two. Russia: Two. Patel: Three. Iran: Three. Russia: Three. Patel: Four. Iran: Four. Russia: Four. Patel: Five. Iran: Five. Russia: Five. Iran: So the combination is... one, two, three, four, five? That's the stupidest combination I've ever heard in my life! That's the kind of thing an idiot would have on his luggage! President Trump: That's amazing. I've got the same combination on my luggage.

They didn’t bother to hack Hegseth because they didn’t have enough manpower to parse through the endless beer delivery email from DoorDash to find anything of value.

I'll have you know, he frequents only the finest liquor stores with drive thu lanes that can accommodate a convoy of Suburbans.

Than you Iran. Now we wait on Israel to release the hidden and redacted Trump files.

Funny enough, Iran is recognized as a "highly capable cyber threat actor." They are very much capable of hacking other countries cybersecurity, especially personal info.
