Nollie_flip 4 days ago +7
It legitimately wasn't though. There's were lots of small players in the vape scene before the FDA effectively gutted the market with regulations that were prohibitively expensive to comply with for most small businesses. This opened the door for big tobacco to take the market.
7
mightylordredbeard 4 days ago +38
The tobacco companies are in the vape industry. My state banned all vapes not FDA approved and as it just so happens the only 3 companies that could sell vapes after were all owned by big tobacco. Corporate lobbying is the worst thing to ever happen to the human population. Our lives would be so much better if corporations weren’t allowed to legally bribe politicians.
38
ButtEatingContest 4 days ago +8
> because big tobacco cut him a check. I guess they stopped paying. Or the vape industry paid more. Big tobacco *is* the vape industry now. First big tobacco was behind all the anti-vaping hysteria, public bans etc. Then once they acquired the vaping companies they began to introduce more extreme and sketchier products. When will we get legislation requiring disclose of ingredients for both tobacco and vaping products? What possible good reason has there been to allow big tobacco to not disclose the ingredients in its products, how is that in the public interest, and why have politicians gone along with it?

It’s fruit flavored FOR ADULTS. 1 week long studies show that e-cigarettes are not habit forming. Also fruit flavoring in e-cigarettes are thought to be a healthy substitute for parks and other green spaces in urban environments. The sale of those green spaces can provide a third or fourth safe space condos for many at risk billionaires.

I don't have a prob w/ flavored vapes. Geek bars are avail in every convience store already. And they are safer than cigarettes. That being said they are addictive AF. Even moreso than cigarettes. 2.4% (the low end of NJOY/Juul) is a f-ton of nicotine. They also don't sell lower nicotine vapes for people that want to wind down. It was a lot harder to quit vapes than it was cigarettes.

I think it allows for fruity flavored pods (again) for devices like Juul. If it cuts down on battery waste from 1-use disposables, it might have an unintended benefit. The pods need to be a better value than disposables or nothing will change.
11
sasha_the_impaler 4 days ago +11
The point that person was making is that gas stations never stopped selling fruity vapes even though they're banned. Breeze and Geekbar vapes aren't FDA approved yet you see them everywhere except big chains like Speedway.

I have tested this extensively on my toddler and getting hooked on fruit flavored items such as gummy snacks has no impact on her willingness to eat real fruit (which is non-existent unless it's applesauce or an occasional banana). shotgunpete2222 4 days ago +291
They banned flavored jul pod style vapes, but not the disposables you are seeing.  So people can still smoke flavors, but they have to throw away their battery every time, creating a ton of e-waste with landfills full of lithion ion batteries. If they aren't going to ban everything, which I doubt they will, at least let smokers use the pod systems to cut down in e-waste.  It's not like this ban has stopped kids from getting the gas station disposables either
291
Spire_Citron 4 days ago +119

I understand this, even if no one else does. I really struggled with a dependency on cannabis vapes. It took admitting my problem to several people close to me (tough and embarrassing) and making sure I never have cash on me to stop. Even so, I still relapse occasionally. I hope you can figure it out. We know it’s no good for us, but addiction doesn’t care.
2

I believe they *are* illegal for other reasons. They never went through the FDAs regulatory process for tobacco products. But that makes them illegal on the federal level, and states don’t have to enforce federal laws if they don’t want to.
7
ldg25 4 days ago +52
The battery waste among all forms of vaping is something that DESERATELY needs some regulation (a full ban imo). Even ignoring climate change and environmentalism, I think useless waste of precious materials is a bipartisan issue there could be agreement on.
52
JCeee666 4 days ago +3
I have a drawer full of batteries. I wont throw them away, I asked my recycle center and they can’t take them yet. But she’s working on it so there’s that. I try to do my part but when the US literally causes oil to rain from the sky I just feel so defeated on the entire effort. When war on all fronts stop maybe we can make some collective progress.

2

Thanks for clarifying! I agree, I’d rather they use pods than all these disposables with a ton of e-waste. Though we definitely need to do something about kids accessing them, it sounds like an epidemic of vaping in schools.

If I may offer a counter argument to what many are saying which will focus around the flip flop of trump and flavors being non essential and strictly a way to market to kids: I can understand the marketing to kids as a valid concern 100%. Especially with the candy packaging and the availability in gas stations etc. However, as someone who smoke and only found success in quitting smoking by vaping, and then was able to quit vaping, flavors were perhaps the most important part of moving away from cigarettes for me. So for starts, things like the gum or patch don’t work on the oral fixation. Vaping allows you to essentially smoke with some fairly substantial harm reduction (not arguing it’s harmless, just arguing it’s a step in a safer direction). So it’s a good first move. Secondly, when vaping is used as a cessation tool, Jsut like the patch or gum, you can slowly reduce the amount of nicotine in the fluid. Many brands sell various levels of nicotine so you can taper off over time, and if you mix your own it’s even better because you can really be certain of the levels and really decrease it a lot. So where do flavors come in? We’ll, as you’re working on slowly decreasing your dependency on cigarettes, or perhaps you’ve already switched full time to the vape and are now reducing nicotine, the goal is to not fall back into the cigarettes. Vaping a big bonus is that the flavors are much much more enjoyable than the admittedly bad taste of cigarettes. Same for the smell. This is a major win for the vape. When you vape the smoke feels a little different. The device doesn’t feel the same in your hand as a cigarette. It doesn’t always hit you the same as a cigarette did, so you can still feel a deep compulsion to go back to cigarettes from time to time, but on those days, or even during a relapse where I fell back on a cigarette, I often found myself revolted by the taste and smell within a few puffs. In short, the flavor can help keep you from relapsing onto cigarettes by providing one major advantage to a smoker over the cigarette. However, how do we solve the other issue about marketing to kids? Well, I think it’s pretty easy. You need to move vaping (and tobacco for that matter) into their own stores or sections where it can be adult exclusive. It’s not like alcohol isn’t crazy dangerous with all kinds of fun flavors. I think it’s hilarious for example Massachusetts outlawed flavored cigarettes and vapes, but you can still buy sour apple vodka or an alcoholic root beer no problem and nobody ever had an issue there. I live in CT currently and we have tobacco shops and vape shops abound. Flavors legal. But it always strikes me that we could protect children by simply saying okay, you know what, it is a little nuts to have tobacco and vapes flavored like apples and candy just chilling at the gas station register. I totally get why parents would be upset. And no wonder kids keep getting these things when you’re relying on a gas station attendant for your ID check. But if you simply mandated, okay, vapes, tobacco, alcohol. All flavors are legal cause adults can make their own decisions, but to protect kids, these things need to be sold in their own establishments that are 21+ only, it would prevent a lot of issues and lead to less underage sales while retaining access for adults who should be allowed to make their own decisions

McArthurWheeler 4 days ago +7
I have been vaping a long time. Replaced smoking with it. I think it is common for people to want cigarette flavor when they first swap but very quickly you end up trying some flavor and getting away from cigarette flavor. I am also all for age restriction, from what I see I don't see anyone advocating otherwise. It is more of an attack vector on vaping. Beyond that the flavorings are legal and trivial to obtain. I know the focus is often on disposables but if you look just past that to normal liquid there is not some practical way to regulate flavor.
7
ThisIsMyCouchAccount 4 days ago +6
I got of cigs with vaping. When I started I thought getting one of the cigarette flavored versions would be best. Makes sense, right? Tastes like an ashtray. And I know people say that - but they usually just talking about smoke. An ash tray is a very specific type of smell that can even bother people that smoke. It does not tastes like cigarettes. And it tasted like that. It was so damn gross.

Gonna get blasted here, but I support using vapes as a way to stop smoking cigarettes. They are not healthy, but are much better than smoking. I used them to quit cigarettes, and lowered the nicotine levels until I was able to quit vaping as well. It’s been over two years nicotine free for me.

Agreed, as a smoker. Even if you can't get off nicotine completely, at least you can smell better. I like the flavors, and after a few days, cigarettes start tasting bad in comparison. Hate Trump, and I think it's financially motivated, but I still think they shouldn't be banned.

They can then only be used while connected to the Bluetooth of the phone they were verified from. I hope that company fails harder than any company that's ever failed before if this is the direction they want to take things.

This isn't a shift, it's backtracking. He must have gotten a big enough check to undo his own ban.

I'm not sure how many people have read the article or just overlooked this gem:  "The FDA suggested the company’s digital age-verification system makes it unlikely the products will be picked up by underage users. Users must first verify their age with a government ID on their cellphone. The e-cigarettes can then only be used when connected via Bluetooth to the phone of the verified user." Why does an e-cig need Bluetooth other than to track and gather data. Anyone who doesn't think this will lead to more targeted ads or selling of information is being very hopeful. How long until ads are shot into my dreams Futurama style?

The kids today are pretty good at stealing their parents information.   I can also see many of parents just buying these things for their kids(and friends) and giving them their ID to bypass these "safeguards"

Yep, or people selling phones/devices that are already connected to the e-cigs. I don't think if seen any underground market ever shrink after stuff like this happens. "Underage use has dropped in 10 years." No, they just don't get caught like they use to.

Of course this is the administration that doesn't want to keep records of anything, especially with minors.

I wonder how much in $Trump that cost? Somehow I suspect it was surprisingly low.

Well this should settle the "are vapes bad for you" debate. The raw milk administration is cool with them, meaning they're toxic as all hell.

I was only able to quit smoking because of flavored e-juice. Quit after 15 years of 2 packs of Marlboro reds a day and haven’t had any nicotine in 10 years after weaning myself off. The flavor was a major factor as I didn’t like fake tobacco juices. I hate Trump but this is a good thing.

Has nobody read the article yet? Not one comment on how this is the only f****** vape I’ve ever heard of that has to connect to your phone using Bluetooth to use and verify your age first. Something tells me this won’t be popular

"intended for adult smokers" Since adult smokers are already cool with gross tasting regular cigarettes, I imagine that despite "intentions" these will mostly be smoked by kids.

Adult smoker here who quit cigarettes with the aid of fruit flavored vapes. The fake tobacco and menthol are terrible and just made me want to smoke. My state has banned all sales of flavored vapes other than tobacco and menthol. These laws may force me to go back to smoking because the flavors i can stand aren’t available.

As a doctor who has to try and counsel kids against smoking, I've read the research. And I promise you, the tobacco companies have read it to. They know flavored products increase the chance kids will use their products, or they wouldn't make them in flavors and create kid friendly marketing. [https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0376871623000728?\_\_cf\_chl\_tk=Vsz6vmtdE573B4V1YpmZH\_YinWvgdiFAyN.xgAO6Sz8-1778099098-1.0.1.1-sAHyM.hjcDv5iuemTMeYEqOjVGjT1Y58LclolDd6xyg](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0376871623000728?__cf_chl_tk=Vsz6vmtdE573B4V1YpmZH_YinWvgdiFAyN.xgAO6Sz8-1778099098-1.0.1.1-sAHyM.hjcDv5iuemTMeYEqOjVGjT1Y58LclolDd6xyg) Edit: For what it's worth, most vapes sold are flavored, but they're usually tobacco or menthol flavor. Data suggests kids are much more likely to use fruit or candy flavor, which is why the legalization of fruity vapes is a specific concern to child marketing.
