Anyone who's had Shingles will tell you to get the vaccine. It's 2 shot vaccine and both are required.

And they are linked to better outcomes of general aging past 50 aside from saving you from the worst most torturous pain you will ever endure. Shingles may have started as chickenpox but omg it presents like hades has overtaken your nervous system suddenly and you won’t be able to stand it.

Recent studies show it also may reduce the risk of dementa. https://www.bmj.com/content/389/bmj.r722

Yes. Before we cancelled health science here, this study and others were about to be so life changing for so many older Americans, their families, and our systems of care giving, Thanks for the link, friend.

Just a note, that data was in regard to those that received Zostavax, the older, less-efficient (\~50% efficacy) vaccine that hasn’t been in use since 2018. Shingrix, the 2-dose series with about 90% efficacy has been routinely used since its approval in 2017

So sorry to hear that.

I was concerned something similar might happen with COVID when it was found to have nervous system effects (loss of taste/smell sensations), that it might lurk in the nervous system for a long time, then flare up the same way.
24
ViolettaQueso 5 days ago +19
I completely had same thoughts. The neurological results combined with the increase of diabetes and its symptoms seemed to me a bit like urgent onset of MS or another autoimmune disease, I wish our studies would’ve continued. It could mean immunizations to prevent lupus, MS, cancers. Vasculitis, etc. and other inflammatory diseases like congestive heart failure.

wyvernx02 5 days ago +7
I have seen stuff that suggests there may be a link between Epstein-Barr virus (Mono) and various cancers as well as MS. If we were ever to get a vaccine for Epstein-Barr, it could potentially make a noticeable impact on other things as well.
7
WaluigiIsTheRealHero 5 days ago +7
You know as well as I do that the last thing this admin wants is further research into anything with Epstein in the name.

I lost my sense of smell for 6 solid months, as in, 6 months of smelling absolutely nothing. When it did came back, everything smelt like vile chemicals. Like my coffee smelt the exact same weird chemical smell as when I'd fill my petrol tank. My doctor said I should get a "smell training" kit of essential oils, to gradually train my nose to smell properly again. Which actually worked. I'm sort of concerned about the long term effect that had, that shit ain't normal

Shingles ten years ago: the sickest 6 weeks of my life so far. Got the vaccine this January without hesitation or regret.

Symphonize 5 days ago +2
Don’t forget the second dose if you haven’t gotten it yet. (Assuming Shingrix)
2
davereit 5 days ago +2
Sure did! The second shot gave me a bit of flu-like symptoms for a day or two—but no other issues. (Other than no longer being eligible to donate blood that might pollute the veins of antivaxers!)

My mom didn't gat vaxxed. Shingles went from hand to eye to brain. That was a rough time, and the beginning of the end.

I kept getting reoccuring monthly shingles flare ups in my late 20s and early 30s. Doctors confirmed it was shingles but said I was too young to get the vaccine. Absolutely infuriating. They seriously need to drop the bullshit age limit and let anyone get the vaccine. More and more people in their 20s and 30s are getting shingles and unnecessarily suffering due to the age limit.
36
p0llyp0cketpussy 5 days ago +16
You can get it if you're immunocompromised, and they don't require any proof. I got the vaccine at 33 because I have a heart transplant, but all I did was go to CVS, signed up online for the shot, and checked a box that said "yes I have a condition that compromises my immune system and leaves me more vulnerable to shingles". Nobody asked any other questions.
16
Training-Earth-9780 5 days ago +8
Safeway p******* refused me but good to know CVS did it!
8
BeIgnored 5 days ago +2
Got my shingles vax at CVS as well when my normal clinic refused. It'll depend on the pharmacist, so if one refuses you go at another time or find a different CVS. And yes, when scheduling your appointment state that you're immunocompromised. They're not supposed to ask for proof.
2
CheeseSandwich 5 days ago +11
That's weird. Here in Alberta my friend had shingles at 30 and that qualified him for Shingrx after he recovered. I am pretty sure you can get it in the U.S. just by indicating you are immune compromised by virtue of having shingles.
11
jgainit 5 days ago +7
I know at least 5 people who got it in their 30s, including my sister. Makes me want the vaccine. I’m 34
7
BeIgnored 5 days ago +1
Try CVS and state you're immunocompromised when you schedule (they're not supposed to ask for proof). It may depend on the pharmacist, so on the off chance they refuse try another time or location.
1
WestCoastBestCoast01 5 days ago +3
Shop around for doctors, offer to pay cash instead of using your insurance. CVS wouldn't do it (automated appointment system), but my primary did. I got the shot last year at 33. She had never given the shot to someone my age before so she needed to look into it, but was fine with it after looking it up. $170 was worth the peace of mind knowing I won't have to deal with that shit.
3
BeIgnored 5 days ago +1
You're probably already aware, but you can still get it if you've been vaccinated; however, it's MUCH less likely and the pain won't be nearly as bad.
1
sanslumiere 5 days ago +24
Hey, not going to harsh someone's buzz if nerve pain that lasts for months to years (post-herpetic neuralgia) is their thing.

Anyone who has a television will tell you that if you've ever had chicken pox, the shingles virus may already be inside of you. Man I hate medical commercials. Also, both shots hurt, one took me out for a day, but I do not want shingles.

I'm in my early 60's - got the 2 Shingrix shots last year - about 2 -3 months apart - for me anyway the next day after the shots felt like I was getting over the flu or something ( for about a day and a half maybe ) For those who are unsure - yes the Shingrix shots are a bit rough compared to regular flu shot & covid vax - which does nothing to me really - but I've heard enough people say how truly awful getting shingles is so feeling a bit rough for a couple of days is a small price to pay to avoid something far worse ..
13
Awkward_Silence- 5 days ago +10
Don't forget to get the chickenpox vaccine and reduce the risk in the first place. Pox isn't an inevitable part of childhood anymore like it was once treated as
10
quats555 5 days ago +2
I had a super mild case of chicken pox when I was very young, and Mom warned me I may not have much immunity and should avoid carriers. And some time in the early 2000’s it suddenly occurred to me that I had not heard of anyone having chicken pox in… years. And I discovered the vaccine had been developed and distributed since, and was absolutely amazed.
2
CheeseSandwich 5 days ago +2
Yes, my daughter is nine and got chicken pox vaccine. She won't ever have to go through that itchy, scabby nastiness.

13
CheeseSandwich 5 days ago +5
I got it as soon as I hit 50. Not sure why they have an age qualification for this vaccine because it can hit at any time in your life. I had a bout when I was in my early 20s. The first shot didn't really do much to me, but the second dose completely knocked me on my ass. I felt like I had the flu for two days.
5
Baud_Olofsson 5 days ago +3
> Not sure why they have an age qualification for this vaccine because it can hit at any time in your life. Vaccines are only approved for use in groups they have been tested on (this is why, as you might remember, the first COVID vaccines were only approved for adults, but then the approved age gradually dropped - because the manufacturers did the trials for progressively lower ages). Clinical trials are *horrendously* expensive, and more expensive the more people you have to include and the longer you have to follow them - and the lower the risk of contracting a disease, the more people you have to include in the trial. And the risk of shingles increases with age, increasing much more sharply around the 50-year mark. So the manufacturer (GSK) didn't feel it was worth it to include under-50s in their trials.
3
Symphonize 5 days ago +1
IIRC, after approval in 2017, a lot of insurances wouldn’t cover Shingrix for ages 50-59, because although it was FDA approved for ages 50+, ACIP hadn’t updated guidelines, and their recommendation was 60+ based on zostavax studies.
1
CheeseSandwich 3 days ago +1
Yes, that makes sense.
1
Training-Earth-9780 5 days ago +2
How far apart are the 2 shots?
2
Morat20 4 days ago +2
Second shot needs to occur between two and six months after the first shot. You've got a big window on that.
2
CheeseSandwich 5 days ago +2
If I recall it was two months.

I get all the vaccinations my doctor recommends. I had shingles in my early-20s. My case was mild yet incredibly painful. I was at student health the day after I noticed the rash. I still get freaked out if that area of my back itches and I'm now 47.
2
SitInCorner_Yo2 5 days ago +1
That shit sucks, got your vaccine everyone , 6y ago I had a first and so far only experience with shingles is just above my left eye, which is one of the worst places to have it imo. My eye keep getting watery and it took days for someone on my job to tell me that doesn’t look like a acne, went to a big hospital they took a photo of me for the required paperwork to get special medication for this “urgent situation”, my eyesight was cloudy for weeks after I recovered and I still have nerve pain on my face sometimes .

Even though the guy with cancer has repeatedly told people that it was caused by exposure to burn pits in Iraq

Even though trump did the operation warp speed thing for Covid?
-4
mofa90277 4 days ago +4
The problem with Trump trying to take every side of every issue simultaneously is that some of his lies get stuck in people’s heads and never leave. Had he not vilified Fauci and the CDC while Fauci and the CDC were pushing operation warp speed, he’d have been able to unambiguously claim victory when it succeeded only one month behind the UK.

jigokubi 5 days ago +44
I suspect this doesn't really surprise you. There's a reason scientists overwhelmingly vote for Democrats. (hint: they're smart) And there's a reason this administration has been attacking science. Because science is based on establishing facts, and these people do not like facts.

Thank God we have such a great FDA that they are going to spend time and money supporting even more effective vaccines. They don't want research findings about the effectiveness of the current vaccines because they are funding research to make better ones.  That has to be the reason. It could not be for any crazy political reasons. They are actually trying to help people. I am having a stroke by trying to rationalize this.
