Shocking that a literal foreign agent got elected and nobody noticed until now.
2619
godisanelectricolive May 12, 2026 +587
She’s been under investigation since 2022 when she was elected to city council and they have a system where councillors take turns being mayor. They don’t have mayoral elections. It took time for them to build the case and charge her so she became mayor by rotation before that happened.

sweetglazes May 12, 2026 +217
The US also likes to pump out a big anti China story before big publicized meetings between China and the US (Trump is visiting China for the next 3 days). It happens every time, so they probably had this charge/story holstered until ready.

And since this is in CA, it's like 2 birds with 1 propaganda stone.

Doesn’t make it not true though

I think they're being facetious and talking about our president...
5
RedBirdOnASnowyDay May 12, 2026 +1
They probably waited until she was mayor to bring charges because its sooooo much more dramatic.
1
mickyninaj May 12, 2026 +1
Federal investigations can take years before finding and gathering enough evidence for a charge worth pursuing. It isn't a cut and dry case.

jitteryegg May 12, 2026 +7
Biden admin waited?

Arcadia has an extremely large Chinese xpat population. No idea who she ran against, but if they weren't Chinese, they would've been fighting an uphill battle against her. I'm more curious how the encrypted WeChat was revealed.
669
godisanelectricolive May 12, 2026 +334
She wasn’t elected mayor because city council members [take turns](https://builder1.revize.com/revize/arcadiaca/government/city_managers_office/public_information/february_2026.php) being mayor and mayor pro tem (deputy mayor) every nine and a half months. Her opponent for city council was also Chinese. It’s a council-manager system so the mayor isn’t that important. The council hires a manager to do all the administration and the mayor is just the chair of the council. The council is supposed to just be the board of directors while the manager is the CEO. There are six council members who are all Chinese heritage, not all mainland Chinese though. The city manager is an Italian American named Dominic Lazzaretto.

We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to act as sort-of-executive officer for the week, but all the decisions of that officer have to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting by a simple majority, in the case of purely internal affairs, but by a two thirds majority, in the case of more major--

Hmm, WeChat isn't encrypted, or so I was told. Source: I am a Chinese Canadian who has WeChat, but rarely read what others post, and even more rarely post anything myself.

We trade information regarding foreign assets with foreign adversaries all the time. “We’ll give you intel on X asset in your country if you give us intel on this foreign asset in our country” all part of the game
15
raisedredflag May 12, 2026 +8
Ok lets trade intel. My country sucks ass, and our politicians are clowns. Your turn.
8
mailwasnotforwarded May 12, 2026 +16
Most likely she wasn't an important asset and Chinese intelligence did an intelligence trade with the CIA. I won't say how I know but intelligence agencies tend to do these kind of deals as a way to negotiate.
16
C0UNT3RP01NT May 12, 2026 +22
I always wondered who would do that job knowing your own agency might sell you out if you’re not useful? Like f*** I did my job and now I get to rot in prison, not because I got caught but because you decided I would be more useful serving in prison.
22
RedBirdOnASnowyDay May 12, 2026 +4
I want to know exactly how China would benefit from an agent embedded in a smallish california town would even benefit China? They already have tiktok. They can get all the info and influence they ever dreamed of with that.
4
aqtseacow May 12, 2026 +7
You aren't thinking wide enough. Her individual position is likely not important, but her ability to partake in and advance other social engineering schemes from a position of social influence is nothing to balk at.

The city is majority Chinese-American now. It used to be a Taiwanese-American enclave then the Mainland Chinese started immigrating there because Taiwanese still speak Mandarin. It's basically Chinese Beverly Hills now.

Asians especially Chinese got a lot of feelings about brown people they just don't say it out loud, puts even the great replacement theory people to shame.

As a non-Murican it’s interesting to me how racism against Asians is largely ignored in America unless it fits a “useful narrative”. For example I was living/working in San Francisco (huge Asian community) around the time #StopAsianHate was big in the American media during COVID. The strong implication in media reporting was that Trump loving white lads were attacking Asian people for no reason. But as more violent crimes against Asians were examined it became apparent the perpetrators were mostly other POC not MAGA Republicans. Once that became clear the media dropped the #StopAsianHate movement like a hot potato One sad example: https://abc7news.com/post/suspect-found-guilty-involuntary-manslaughter-2021-san-francisco-grandpa-vicha-murder-case/18410822/

It's funny considering how racist the US has been against Chinese people historically.
9
Financial_Yard7047 May 12, 2026 +4
The US was/is particularly racist against Chinese/Asian men. Asian women on the other hand, they historically were more enthusiastic about bringing here lol. Just white patriarchy racism

"The ideal immigrants" as they call Asian folks
4
Even_Tangerine_4201 May 12, 2026 +2
So funny when your personal experience happens to brush up against these big national storylines/trends. Really reinforces how silly so many of them are when you have seen more than just some cherry-picked stats or video clips on your phone. I have been to Arcadia (and other towns with massive Chinese/Taiwanese populations in that area) many times. It’s very very noticeable how many business names, ads etc are in Chinese. They have for sure taken the whole place over. And yet somehow it never occurred to me that Arcadia might be the staging ground for the eventual replacement of white America. Here was my dumb ass thinking it was just a place to get awesome dim sum. 😉
2
SightAtTheMoon May 12, 2026 +3
Also because Taiwan is considered "the Japan of China" and it's a very different vibe than the mainland, so it attracts mainlanders because it's "nicer". In a similar way, you can immediately tell the bias of a so-called Chinatown by looking in the corners.

ok just because aipac is wrong doesnt mean working for china is ok
55
PrettyYoungTiger May 12, 2026 +23
I’m criticizing the hypocrisy, not advocating china.
23
zack77070 May 12, 2026 +12
You're also not comparing apples to apples. Aipac is a recognized group, if Chinese Americans wanted to make a political funding group that advocates for the CCP they could.
12
wostestwillis May 12, 2026 +9
No, the FARA exists for all other aipac like groups. Why isn't aipac held to that standard? 🤔
9
PrettyYoungTiger May 12, 2026 +8
Yea okay. Im sure China could create a lobbyist group in America & it would be received the way Israels funding groups are received. Politicians would have little Chinese flag pins on their suits, just like they already do for Israel. Lol Wake up buddy. Its a game that was rigged generations ago.
8
zack77070 May 12, 2026 +4
Yes they could if they are American citizens, it's their first amendment right. They could also openly be a Nazi if they wanted to, its not going to happen but you have every right to do so if you wish.
4
ID_SINK May 12, 2026 +5
The US government does not actually care about the first amendment when it is perceived to conflict with their geopolitical interests in regards to China
5
zack77070 May 12, 2026 +5
Any examples of the US government directly interfering with a Chinese American political movement? Even Tik Tok was busted because they bought an American social media company to bypass foreign company data rules.
5
wostestwillis May 12, 2026 +4
"Working for China" Ah, posting some propaganda on some website that maybe a few thousand read? That's why she got such a low bail and only 4 years. Compare that to senators, presidents, the whole government actual enacting laws for them that shall not be named.
4

For some reason, I'm not surprised that a ton of accounts are flopping out simultaneously to shift the topic from Chinese spying as quickly as possible.

Farobi May 12, 2026 +57
Same thing happened in the Philippines, former mayor Alice Guo was caught spying and serving China's interests on the side. Last I heard though she got life in prison.
57
Stiimpoops May 12, 2026 +27
She didn't get caught spying and she wasn't charged with spying. She got convicted for human trafficking for POGOs. She also wasn't serving China's interests because she was serving the interests of POGOs which are illegal casinos operated by Chinese gangs that fled Chinese authorities and settled in the Philippines. The politicians then pulled a MAGA and did the whole, "she worked for an illegal c***** operated by Chinese gangs, so therefore she must be a Chinese spy." Their entire argument falls apart because the Chinese government is against these POGOs since they scam and human traffic a bunch of Chinese people.
27
netflixissodry May 12, 2026 +7
Except the literally uncovered that Alice Guo’s entire life story was lie. She pretended to be half Filipino born from a filipina maid who disappeared to a Chinese father but turns out that was false along with much of childhood story. It’s like something out of a movie about sleeper agents
7
Qules_LP May 12, 2026 +5
While I don't buy she is a fully fledged spy, I do see the evidence against her still being an informative to the Chinese government true.
5
netflixissodry May 12, 2026 +2
She might not have been working with CCP yet but based on how the average Chinese agent operates it was a matter of time. She was already favorable and partial towards Chinese and “chinese-filipinos” which would make her a useful asset to China when the time comes as they have a deep interest in Philippines. They could have probably attempted to elevate her status in the government to being senator or president. CCP is always willing took past the POGO and thug operations that rich Chinese do in SEA so long as they don’t get caught and embarrass the Chinese government. These Chinese operations are all over Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, etc but China only does something when high profile arrests are made. The operators of these things have free reign to come/go from China as they please
2
sweetglazes May 12, 2026 +6
That still isn't proof she's spy for the government. She could be lying for the gangs.
6

> Eileen Wang, who was elected mayor of the city of 56,000 in 2022, appeared in federal court Monday and was released on a $25,000 bond. A $25,000 bond seems fairly low for that level of crime tbh
870
Cyberous May 12, 2026 +151
I think the only thing the prosecutors allege she did was not registering with the government. I believe her actions would otherwise be legal. Also, I wonder if they were more lenient because they don't want to open the can of worms of needing to go after all the people posting Israeli propaganda without registering.
151
Chinpokomaster05 May 12, 2026 +36
Justice doesn't go after all equally. They're lenient because it's no big deal. Getting her on essentially a technicality and claiming victory
36
redoubt515 May 12, 2026 +22
I think people are getting mislead by the term 'agent' and believing that it implies much more than it does (assuming 'agent' = 'secret agent' >An "agent" is an individual or entity that acts “within the United States” at the order, request, direction, or \[direct or indirect\] control of a “foreign principal” (meaning a government or foreign political party) I believe this would include everything from official/legal intelligence operatives, to lobbyists employed by a foreign government, to foreign controlled political action groups, and PR/media organizations affiliated with foreign governments or political parties.
22
Ecuni May 12, 2026 +5
Sounds like something AIPAC should have to do
5
HP844182 May 12, 2026 +12
So exactly what it sounds like?
12
Stoyfan May 12, 2026 +3
Unless if she had access to secret info (which as a mayor she unlikely did)then the only other thing to go after her is the fact that she was not registered as a foreign agent. Being registered isn't inherently illegal but it allows the government to approve or disapprove any attempts to use US residents to further the interests of their own country, with diplomats being a good example. But most people who do this kind of work for adverseries tend to do it covertly and as a result will likely fall foul of these laws.
3
theuncleiroh May 12, 2026 +10
She was convicted (and admitted guilt) of making posts of content that officials from China asked her to. Even if it's criminal and unacceptable, it's hardly shocking stuff. Doesn't even look like they're even accusing her of being paid or anything, just making posts with the cooperation of the Chinese govt without registering. It's not surprising the bond for that isn't very high. The only illegal part about it is the lack of registration (and even then, do you think the government is going after every person that accepted money from israel to post pro-israeli stories? Because I've got a hard time believing all the people who literally admitted to accepting money for it is a registered foreign agent)

The crime being posting on a website is really funny. >Prosecutors said that Wang and Yaoning “Mike” Sun promoted “pro-PRC propaganda” in the U.S. through a website titled “U.S. News Center.” PRC refers to the People’s Republic of China.
1
FadedToBeige May 12, 2026 -27
all she did was post pro-China articles on a website
-27
mindfungus May 12, 2026 +184
Dude, she didn’t just “post some socials”, she actually ran the whole website called “U.S. News Center” which was dedicated to publishing propaganda that was directed by the Chinese government: She “received and executed directives from PRC government officials to post pro-PRC content on the website” and sometimes sought permission from Chinese government officials to post content. But the law she actually broke was that since she was acting as a US government official, she was required to notify the U.S. attorney general, but failed to do so.

The agreement says Wang and Sun “received and executed directives from PRC government officials to post pro-PRC content on the website” and sometimes sought permission from Chinese government officials to post content. That’s a whole lot more than shitposting articles. Nice try, though.

Not surprised at all. Even from a video 10 years ago, they were calling Arcadia, Chinese Beverly Hills https://youtu.be/nuMhqrFOSYE?si=jNcqgRGKVW-o1yib Investors from China were/are buying up properties there. 40
MidnightMillennium May 12, 2026 +62
Yes, international Chinese police outposts. They just decided they would go around and police their citizens internationally on foreign soil without telling anyone or asking for permission from the foreign country. Insane. Literally would rent out an office and use it as a 'police station'. Unlike the Russians, Chinese aren't very good spies, they keep getting caught.

So easy it's boring. He went to Russia, started rallying against NATO, opened his c***** with Russian money that was used for money laundering, got his dumb book published, and was introduced to Epstein all around the same time. Oh, and divorced and remarried a Soviet bloc bride. Oh, and this was all when the GOP started helping post-communist Russia divide assets between oligarchs. And "around the same time" I mean within 3 years.

More of an agent of Israel but yeah, Russia too.
38
theuncleiroh May 12, 2026 +3
And for every single person that accepted israeli money for positive posts (not to mention the ones who coordinated with a foreign state for love of the (genocide) game). Personally, I'm more worried about the pernicious influence of the countries that are actively engaged in warfare and killing civilians. I don't see a reason why my country wants to make us believe China is our greatest enemy (hell, I don't see a reason to believe they're our enemy at all). There's nothing wrong with mutual coexistence and prosperity, especially when the alternative is war between superpowers

The punishment seems light so far. The guy sentenced to 20 months for bribery and acting as an agent of China, Wang is looking at a similar deal. For compromising a US elected official, that's practically a slap on the wrist.
18
Krelius May 12, 2026 +17
In the grand scheme of things she didn’t do anything actually damaging, a couple propaganda posts on a news site, that’s nothing. Honestly the Chinese was a bit amateur here, it would not have been an issue if they went through a “lobbying firm” like other countries.

City is called Arcadia. Which is probably nicer and better managed than 95% of other cities in LA county.  She might be a Chinese agent but she isn’t doing a bad job.

I guess her 'Open Door Policy' was a bit more literal than the voters expected.

"For example, in June 2021, a PRC official contacted Wang and other individuals via the WeChat encrypted messaging application with pre-written news articles, including a PRC official-written essay in the Los Angeles Times that stated: “China’s Stance on the Xinjiang Issue – There is no genocide in Xinjiang; there is no such thing as ‘forced labor’ in any production activity" At least the LA times were transparent about this being written by a chinese official.

assgoblin87 May 12, 2026 +3

Too little info for me to say, but Idk what’s more propagandistic than “releasing” child predator files that protect the abusers. Let’s talk about propaganda :)

But was she a good mayor or not?

missmermaidgoat May 12, 2026 +2
Same thing happened to a small town in the Philippines! Look up Mayor Alice Guo of Tarlac, PH

Isnt that treason? Like death penalty tier stuff? She got a fine and thats it?

US has a much stricter definition than at least most of the world.  You have to be aiding an enemy we're formally at war with. Even the espionage act probably won't be very applicable, since I doubt a small(ish) town mayor is really in a position to have information that would compromise national defense.

Deflorma May 12, 2026 +11
She didn’t commit treason she just sorta outed herself to a conflict of interest, similar to many politicians in the trump administration

I wasn’t aware the US was at war with China.

This is either going to be a shitty 2 season Netflix dramedy or an excellent 5+ season Apple TV workplace comedy.

Just sayin... Gavin Newsom has repeatedly vetoed legislation that aimed to put limits on Chinese influence within California. Newsom also cleaned up San Francisco only when Xi Jinping visited California in 2023....then he let the city go right back to shit. Gavin Newsom also then turned around and visited China on a diplomatic mission to "visit China to strengthen climate cooperation, economic ties, and subnational relations". Are we really surprised this happened in California, might need to look into that. This, with the fraud, sounds like some turncoat like behavior going on in the state.

Perhaps being able to give politicians money led to this. Sounds like we need some sort of national overhaul of our campaign contributions laws.
