As a former Marine and a very strong advocate for free speech, I'll always support your right to do this. I may or may not agree with it, I can say whatever I like about it, but I'll always defend your right to say what you like and express yourself in a nonviolent manner and that DOES include flag burning, like it or not.
If you TRULY believe in freedom of speech that will always mean freedom of speech for ALL... not just those you agree with.
I support free speech and am staunchly against all book banning. Those are the two hills I will always be willing to die on.

Just a reminder of the US flag code:
No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.
(a)The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
(b)The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
(c)The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free, except as may be necessary in limited circumstances and done in a respectful manner as part of a military or patriotic observance.
(d)The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker’s desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.
(e)The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.
(f)The flag should never be used as a covering for a ceiling.
(g)The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.
(h)The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
(i)The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.
(j)No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.
(k)The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
That last part.
Also how many maga dickwads have you seen wearing the flag or draping it across their shitty rascal scooters.

Executive orders never make *anything* law. They are just instructions/guidance to the rest of the executive branch on how to handle things. So that particular order says to the DoJ "it's your job to find *something* to charge flag burners with that results in them being imprisoned for a year".

A lot of it is humans are not good at understanding scale when processing information. [Dunbar's number] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunbar%27s_number) has the max number a human social group can have at around 250 (though the exact number has a lot of debate around it). That is closer to the scale we instinctively process news on, so when Facebook feeds our racist aunts and uncles stories about unhinged Muslims they see it as being about 1 out of 250 Muslims instead of the 2 billion Muslims actually in the world.
It's the same problem with most reactionary responses to news. Like when people think the New York subways are dangerous because they see 2 or 3 stories, not realizing around 3.5 million people ride on it each day.

Isn’t burning the flag the way you retire them?

If you can’t burn your flag then it isn’t your property. It’s as simple as that. Regardless of what people feel about it morally.

As much as I am a fan of not seeing the flag burned in protest an executive order is not a law.

Were taught in Navy SERE training that the flag is just a symbol (obviously). Right before training ended, one of the instructors ripped, spit on and stomped on an American flag. I support a person's right to exercise free speech, even if meas desecrating the flag. Heck, there are lots of MAGA types flying flags that are bleached and torn. That seems like desecration through inaction.

Morals and values are just methods of control, they don’t apply to the rich!

I’m a former Marine I respect our flag. Our military are buried with one on their casket. We take for granted our freedoms. We should not be so complacent and naïve enough to believe that we can’t lose our freedoms. Our politicians swore an oath to uphold the constitution not one person. 21st century technology manipulating algorithms on social media oligarchs buying media the freedom of the press will have a price. A president who has billionaires in his administration. They say they understand America but they haven’t experienced what everyday Americans deal with trying to financially survive. A president and congress who allocated over 10 billion for ICE. The party line was they would arrest and deport the worst of the worst. The majority have been hard working undocumented who are not in the category of worst. They used gestapo tactics on our streets. They murder two American citizens. Now a president who had a show of force off the coast of Iran as leverage for nuclear negotiations. Netanyahu knows the supreme leader and his family and leaders will be at a building at one time. Israel has wanted a regime change in Iran for more than 40 years. Netanyahu knows that’s is the equivalent of kicking a hornet nest. Iran proxies will attack Israel he convinced Trump that’s they will never have this opportunity again. Trump already has the navy as leverage ready to back Israel play. Trump has stated 3 or more reasons why he attacked and started a war. There’s nothing definitive in what he has said about why he started a war. Now he’s calling it an excursion because Congress needs to approve a war and they haven’t so they won’t call it a war anymore. I would not burn our flag but I understand why a veteran might. I would fly my flag upside down but I understand what our troops sacrifice I have to support the men and women . We should not be fighting Israel’s war that they wanted. We should have a definitive reason other than Trump had a feeling. We should know what the exit strategy is not when Trump feels in his bones when it’s over. I wouldn’t burn our flag I don’t want to see it burn. Our country is burning our freedoms are in jeopardy our way of life is too expensive to live.

I see this guy's actions as the respectful and dignified disposal of an American flag that has been soiled and disgraced by a depraved "president" who has systematically defecated upon every value and every vestige of honor that that flag was designed to represent.
