Hollywood loves a sex worker story. From Shirley MacLaine shimmying in Bob Fosse’s *Sweet Charity* back in 1969 to *Pretty Woman*’s enduring appeal since 1990 to *Anora*’s wins at the Academy Awards last year, the industry has long been fascinated with how women sell their bodies.
But sex work has evolved in the internet age, and movies and television shows have mostly been slow to reflect this change. Enter *Margo’s Got Money Troubles*, a series premiering on April 15 on Apple TV. Elle Fanning stars as the title character, a college dropout and new mom who turns to O******* to help her pay her mounting bills. (Her baby’s father, a married professor who took advantage of her, now wants no part of the responsibility.)
Based on the 2024 novel of the same name by Rufi Thorpe, *Margo* channels both the grit and joy of the O******* universe, and in doing so makes this intriguing world relatable without feeling overly sanitized. Although it has some cutesy flourishes — Margo dresses up like a green alien to lure audiences into her account — it treats O******* like a regular job with ups and downs, hazards and celebrations.
