> fans and players from five countries that have qualified for the World Cup must pay up to $15,000 for a bond to get a tourist visa this year due to President Donald Trump's stricter immigration policy What the f***?

"stricter immigration policy". It's basically going directly into bank accounts. It's all a huge scam and grift but the media acts like its legit policy making. As if he hasn't made billions since coming back into the presidency

I really think that we should all be paying attention to the fact that Elon Musk not only have multiple investigations going on into his financial dealings, his net worth has more than doubled since forming Doge and getting involved in the government. Take a look at Jeff bezos. That dude has been stuck at like $225 billion for the past 5 years. Elon Musk now eclipses the rest of the wealthiest individuals on the planet. Now, call me crazy, but I'm not so sure it's a coincidence that his net worth has grown exponentially since inauguration 2025.... Probably just a coincidence. Edit: used speech to text. Meant to say he *HAD* investigations. They gon' Edit2: The reason I bring it up is because: If the world's richest people show obvious signs they've amassed their net worth from dubious or possibly illegal means, lawlessness is now the norm.

Elon is a house of cards built on his waning popularity and ability to siphon public money. The moment he stops rising, it all crashes. And that's why SpaceX is now being valued at ~~$900B~~ ~~$1T~~ $2T ahead of its IPO. The pump can never stop

ScissorFight42069 Apr 3, 2026 +102
Yet somehow, he's going to remain unfathomably rich. These people never lose.

Schonke Apr 3, 2026 +63
A billionaire could lose 99% of their net worth and still have more than the average american family/couple makes in a lifetime. (Average US salary is $65K. $65k x 50 years = $3.5M x 2 adults = $7M. 1% of $1B = $10M.) If the average american lost 99% of their net worth, they wouldn't even be able to buy a decent new-ish car with the $6200 they'd have left. The median net worth (i.e. when compensating for the extreme wealth disparity of Americans) wouldn't even be able to afford one month's rent in major US cities with the ~$1250 they'd have left. Edit: A billionaire losing 99.9% of their net worth would *still* put them well above the average net worth of Americans with $1M to spare vs $620K average. Musk being "worth" $860B could be fined $30M per day and still have over $200B when he dies in 60 years.
63
Squire_II Apr 3, 2026 +13
> 0.1% of $1B = $10M You mixed up your numbers, 0.1% of 1 billion is 1 million. 1% of 1 billion is 10 million.

Thank you, yes I did! Corrected now.

Most people simply cannot conceptualize the difference between a million and a billion. Keeping the US education system crippled is not an accident, no doubt.

"They can't; it's impossible - but they'll figure a way. I've been at this company for ten years and I've seen some things you wouldn't.. you wouldn't believe. When all is said and done, they do not lose money. They don't mind if everybody else does, but they don't lose." -Paul Bettany playing as Will Emerson in Margin Call (2011)
6
The_Lapsed_Pacifist Apr 4, 2026 +16
Elon doesn’t have multiple investigations anymore, he got rid of or gutted the departments that were looking into him when he was doing the DOGE thing. He basically paid to do that and have a good rummage through all the data stored on citizens while he was at it. It was a bargain for him.
16
Ashamed-Land1221 Apr 3, 2026 +23
He got doge to kill/cancel/ignore not prosecute over 18 separate investigations against him and his businesses going back two decades, he dismantled the last blocks against super greedy rich assholes. He can do what he wants now for the foreseeable future with little repercussions, the rich won the class war, all that's left now are more less meaningless battles that they'll let the poors win knowing full well it won't change their wealth or power structure one bit for them but giving the poors a victory every now and then if meaningless to them allows them to look somewhat decent in the eyes of the rubes waiting for things to trickle down and less likely to go Dr Wario on their asses when we can barely afford protein other than soy that some believe will turn you gay, it will be quite the mental struggle for those idiots in a few years.

The fuckier part? That bond is refundable once they leave the country, in principle. There isn't a system in place yet for them to reclaim that refund. Just like the tariffs.
740
BullShitting-24-7 Apr 3, 2026 +393
So its not a bond. It’s an entrance fee.

Just like the guesstimate of 600,000 that put $100 deposit on the Trump phone. (60 million dollars). Any refund? Nope. Any product? Nope. Any anticipated delivery? Nope. Just 60 million grifted by the Trump family.
140
Roadside_Prophet Apr 3, 2026 +39

And the $50k promised to ICE officers in 5 years. They will never see that
25
systemhost Apr 3, 2026 +22
And despite the MASSIVE budget they rammed through Congress for ICE, they didn't seem to budget for that hiring bonus so their plan is to make the next president have to deal with that budgetary liability or deal with the public wrath of MAGA by not playing ball. And they still want EVEN MORE funding for them right now.
22
Pizza_Low Apr 3, 2026 +26
I like how the fbi's budget is ~ 11 billion, and ICE's budget is > 75 billion. The USMC's budget is 57 billion. Someone explain to how that makes sense.
26
GD_7F Apr 4, 2026 +5
> Someone explain to how that makes sense. Easy, it's a paramilitary loyal to trump that has already been tested to see if it will shoot political undesirables and also a corruption engine that funnels deals like warehouse contracts to loyalists. And I'm sure all that military hardware they've procured won't find its way into the hands of right wing militias.

Box with a money s*** and a sign that says "pay $5 refundable fee to enter the club". You put in $5 and go in the club. Then you walk out later. But your money is still in the box with no way to get it out and there's no one to talk to about getting your money back.

But JD said they would be welcome…so long as they don’t stay more than their visa, OR if they get pulled over for a spot check. I know idiot Congress people think ICE has been “trained” to read IDs, but every encounter with them seems like they say “could be a forgery!” And detain them anyways.

I played high school, then D2 soccer in college in the 90's. From the time I was 5, soccer was the 'next big sport' in America. When the US hosted in 1994, made it out of Round Robin, played a behemoth in Columbia on US soil on the 4th of July, it was a large enough foundation to get the MLS off the ground. I don't know a single soul now excited for this World Cup.

Only because of the price gouging. Tickets are impossible to get at face value and even face value is very high. We are near Boston and would love to go to a match but no way im.soending 1000+ a ticket.

Sad but probably true. Hoping some scalpers bought them and will take an L though
47
maverick4002 Apr 3, 2026 +24
They definitely do not want empty seats to be broadcast worldwide. With that said, we are still too far out of the competition for prices to decrease. If it were to decrease, id expect not to see movement until around June
24
Spobobich Apr 3, 2026 +23
They're gonna have cardboard cut outs of people filling the empty seats like during the pandemic.
23
ExplorerPup Apr 3, 2026 +24
Article says that American's have actually been spiking the prices since they're willing to pay more, so don't hold your breath if you don't already have a ticket.
24
peepeebutt1234 Apr 3, 2026 +18
If you go take a look at the prices your wallet will probably shrivel up and hide. Looking at Stubhub, Qatar vs Switzerland in Santa Clara is the cheapest game I can find, and its around $400-500 for upper level, worst tickets you could get. Lower level ranges from $1000~ if you want to sit behind one of the goals, all the way to $15,000 for mid-field. The US vs Paraguay game in LA is pretty insane right now, cheapest tickets around $3,000 up to $50,000 for the best seats.
18
Ok_Hornet_714 Apr 4, 2026 +7
Stubhub might not be the best price, tickets appear to be somewhat cheaper on the official FIFA marketplace. Though I doubt the tickets will ever be what I would call reasonable. It looks like all the tickets in my area had a face value of $140+ for seats in the last row of the stadium.
7
garanvor Apr 3, 2026 +30

8
marcSuile Apr 3, 2026 +645
All I know is I’ve been on the email list for the World Cup given I live relatively close to Philly. The amount of ticket/hotel bundle emails I have gotten in the past two weeks now make sense lol. They’re really hurting for reservations it seems.
645
anduril206 Apr 3, 2026 +115
Yeah. I also know cities have been talking about the number of visitors expected. But I think what is more likely is that soccer fans will just go see teams locally. I'm in the PNW and I believe that our stadium is essentially sold out and that there is high demand. But I also would guess that a majority of tickets have been sold to folks who live within driving distance.
115
EmuMan10 Apr 3, 2026 +21

21

kananishino Apr 3, 2026 +37

37
mejok Apr 3, 2026 +29
Not like your chances were super high to begin with. Me and 4 of my buddies all signed up for each of the ticket phases. Only one of us, me, was successful. It was during the first ticketing period and before the groups were set. The US games were set though and I was pretty much only interested in going to a US game, but I wasn’t interested in spending 800 bucks a ticket for the game in Seattle. There were also still tickets available for the first game in LA but they were 1900 a piece.
29
kananishino Apr 3, 2026 +23
Yeah a lot of people are acting like the tickets are so easy to get because people are boycotting when that is just plain not true.

Yeah as a Canadian it's funny when people suggest this. I'm in Calgary, and our CFL stadium was built in the 60s with hardly any upgrades to it since it opened. Not to mention the other cities with nice stadiums like Regina and Winnipeg are not places that glitzy international soccer fans would want to spend time in.

Not that the US doesn't deserve it, but you say that like the last two World Cups weren't hosted by Russia and Qatar. I'm going to wait and see before I read anything into this because those were largely successful despite the online narratives claiming they were going to be massive failures. People have proven time and time again that they'll prioritize their entertainment over ethics.

I can't think of any demographic that cares less about ethics than football fans. I'm European so I know it first hand

So excited to go to easter dinner this weekend and listen to my family complain about how horrible the rest of the world is for punishing Americans just because the world is obsessed with hating Trump for no reason. They are so far up their own asses, and Trump's ass

BensenJensen Apr 3, 2026 +88
I get to go and listen to my MAGA family tell me about the Iran War and how great Trump is for raining hellfire on Iranians and how much we are winning. I work Iranian military intelligence for the Army. If I gave a shit enough to tell them are wrong, I would get to hear how they, Fox News watchers, know more than me, a literal subject matter expert, about the thing I do for a living.

I grew up in Houston and live in Portland. Met a girl in a pool in Cabo from Houston. I told her Portland is safe and waaaay safer than Houston imo. She refused to believe me. Has she ever been to Portland? Nope, but that wouldn’t stop her from believing Fox News over a Portland resident.

Live-Laugh-Fart Apr 4, 2026 +3
Portland is a legitimately cool city. I’m in a group chat of like 12 people for fantasy baseball and we were on the topic of expansion cities. I said Portland would be a great baseball city and they lost their minds and just started spouting Fox News propaganda. It’s sad and pathetic. None of them have even been there before.

I mean you could just tell them they're miserable cunts and have easter dinner with people's company you enjoy

People need to stop being on good terms with family and friends that keep supporting this mess. We are well past "agree to disagree". It's hard but you gotta just cut them off.
52
callisstaa Apr 3, 2026 +25
In a very similar sense the world needs to stop being 'good friends' with the US.
25
AlternativeRun5727 Apr 3, 2026 +11
I think that has happened. It is just a complex decoupling process that will take a decade or more. Trump is the symptom, not the source
11
donkeyrocket Apr 3, 2026 +17
We ripped that bandage off at the tail end of his first administration. No idea how folks tolerate being around those that still staunchly support him.
17
flirtmcdudes Apr 3, 2026 +12
It’s kinda funny how they all defaulted into the “the only reason you feel that way is because you don’t like Trump” so they never have to think critically to defend anything he does

Suthrnr Apr 3, 2026 +40
Im happy I was able to cut off the right wing members of my family so I dont have to listen to their insane cultist rants, followed by how they went on a missionary trip to Africa and kidnapped peoples children. Right wingers are so f****** insane and evil these days. As far as Im concerned the family I knew all died.

IsopodIndependent553 Apr 3, 2026 +30
I no longer speak to my conservative friends who voted for Trump. I can tolerate Centrists, Independents, and Libertarians to a degree as long as they don’t dehumanize others or make apologies for the GOP. Luckily my mother is as left wing as I am, and my dad is a lifelong Republican who HATES Trump so much he stopped voting for all Republicans. But at this point I don’t want anything to do Trump voters. They are divorced from reality and are incapable of being reached. Every single one of them deserves to be shunned and shamed. Can you elaborate on your family kidnapping children in Africa? That’s wild.

Suthrnr Apr 3, 2026 +9
My aunt finds babies who have “been abandoned” and takes them back to some food hall church thing they set up there to feed them and “fill them with the love of jesus christ”. Then the parents show up, she recalled being fearful that she might be killed multiple times. Which, of course, means that she just stole the babies and they were never abandoned but shes so f****** nuts at this point that she cant make that connection

Defiant_Employee6681 Apr 3, 2026 +12
This isn’t serious right? Your aunt kidnaps children??

SuperSpecialAwesome- Apr 3, 2026 +4
> Im happy I was able to cut off the right wing members of my family I haven't had one conversation with my MAGA sister since Thanksgiving of 2024. It's kinda refreshing, since she's always been a judgmental, condescending b**** to me all my life. She ruined Thanksgiving (my niece's birthday) with all her Trump praising bullshit, just a month after she did the same thing during my late aunt's memorial. I've come to realize that my sister and I have never had anything in common, and the huge age gap definitely affected our closeness. If not for my niece, we'd be little more than strangers. She can be a bigot all she wants, as long as I don't have to hear her nonsense. Thankfully, my brothers hate Trump, but my aunt and her daughter are just as MAGA as my sister. It's horrifying knowing my closest friends growing up are at risk of being harmed by Trump for being Hispanic. Or that RFK could come after people like me for being neurodivergent. Or that LGBT+ people will be next on the chopping block. And you're just powerless to do anything about it, since there's absolutely no leaders to look up to.

Jus reply with a southern accent "The Biiiiible says adulterers are to be put to death" and jus stare at them.

drunkshinobi Apr 3, 2026 +6
People need to stop forcing themselves to interact and pretend everything is fine. If they are still supporting a dictator destroying the country then they aren't worth your time. When some one is addicted to drugs. The best thing you can do most of the time is to cut them off completely. Every time you accept them being around they feel like you accept their addiction. Same with cultists. If you keep letting them be around and spewing their c*** they will think it is ok. It isn't until they are cut off from everyone that they realize they're in the wrong and need to change. To seek help.

Depends, thry may also have overestimated fans willingness to stay in the expensive hotels. I know for Brazil a lot of Belgian fans stayed in a glorified tent camp. Tickets are very expensive, but for world cups a large part of the audience are people who have this as a once every 10 years trip. Who blow their budget on tickets and flight, and then stay in shitty accommodations.

The entire world should boycott the American regime at this point.

I love soccer. The World Cup has always been my favorite sporting event to watch. I’m done with FIFA now. The final straw was the stupid “peace prize” given to a war criminal. I’m not going to watch a single game, and it would be great if the entire organization just fell apart.

Not Dubai and 400 deaths among workers? Mind you, trump will top that
32
GatoLibre Apr 3, 2026 +26
As an American, I would like to plead all non-Americans to avoid coming here. No matter how much you love football, stay safe and watch it on TV. It’s probably going to be a shitty event anyways because hardly anyone here gives a f*** about the sport. Our situation sucks. There are millions of us fighting the regime but you are not safe here. You aren’t safe from the force of trigger happy, racist incels we call “ICE”and you aren’t safe from the corrupt politicians and billionaire corporations who are going to bilk you for every dime they can.

lawofthewilde Apr 4, 2026 +22
I would not travel to the US for any reason if I didn’t already live here. Watch it on TV. Don’t come to the US.

Politics aside, why are we encouraging people to travel to Arlington, Texas in the middle of the summer? 😭 The weather sucks ass in July in DFW, it’s going to be well over a hundred with terrible stagnant air. Plus, Arlington has terrible construction and roads right now. Not my ideal vacation imo. There are cool places to visit in DFW, but I still feel bad for anyone traveling here.

As someone who has been to several world cups in the past, (Germany 2006 was the best) I was so excited for this tournament. Despite living in the US, I haven’t purchased tickets and have made no plans to attend. The prices are too high and Trumps behavior at the Club World Cup last summer has completely turned me off to it. For potential international travelers: Please don’t come, ICE are a bunch of dangerous thugs, our infrastructure is crumbling and you will be gouged for money every second you are here. You will be visiting a country that has started a pointless war that is threatening to crash global economy. Stay home and safe. Engage with the World Cup in your local communities. I promise you it will be more fun. That is what I did for Qatar and it was great.

this is going to be the worst world cup in the last 30 years isn't it
15
dafunkmunk Apr 3, 2026 +26
It'll be kind of funny if the US hosting the world cup is a bigger flop than Qatar hosting it in the middle of a desert in stadiums hastily built by forced slave labor

shpydar Apr 3, 2026 +7
Toronto Life sees this as a normal practice and good for the people attending the games as there are now more available hotel rooms for fans that were previously being held by FIFA for their staff. >While the numbers are surprising, this is standard practice for FIFA, which tends to overbuy hotel rooms for technical staff, teams, referees and players early on. Then, when it has a better sense of who needs to be where, it trims its reservations accordingly. > >For their part, Toronto’s hoteliers seem confident they can fill the spots before the games begin: Greater Toronto Hotel Association president Sara Anghel told the Globe that demand for rooms in June is 30 per cent higher than normal. https://torontolife.com/city/fifa-has-cancelled-reservations-at-hotel-rooms-across-toronto/

Not sure who is the most corrupt, FIFA or Trump, I can see this being the worst world cup Ever. Hotel prices, car parking prices, ticket prices, getting through the airports, being in 3 different countries, Infantino and Trump = a f*** up

I would not travel to the US even if you paid me to. You can't spend it if you're dead in an ICE facility.

These a reservations made by FIFA for FIFA staff, the Press, and stakeholders not tourists. The story also mentions that international bookings are up 100% compared to last year.

CheezTips Apr 4, 2026 +5
WC booking are lower than expected, and regular tourism bookings in those areas are way down, too.

I'm part of a large football community in my country, where people travel all over the world to watch matches live. I don't know a single person who attended the World Cup in Qatar.

mejok Apr 3, 2026 +8
Yeah. I think it is egregious but there are enough people with enough money. I’m not doing it though. I’ve been saving for years for this and have set aside about 15 grand, but I’m gonna use most of that to take my family on a big fat vacation and keep some set aside for 2030 in Spain/Portugal
8
UberBostonDriver Apr 3, 2026 +5
There are a lot people with money. Airbnb bookings are up 150% during June in Dallas area. Tons of Airbnbs around Boston are getting booked for $7k+ a week during the world cup.
5
PacoMahogany Apr 3, 2026 +14
They’re doing the same thing in Seattle.  They had all the hotels put giant blocks of rooms on hold and then are just cancelling with no penalty.  F*** you FIFA.
14
DrFatz Apr 3, 2026 +5
I will say as a resident of these two cities, we are not f****** prepared for the influx of people coming for these games. Hell Arlington's idea for public transportation is it's own shitty Uber service called Via, which basically is a series of mini vans acting like a city bus. (There are certain "stops" designated throughout Arlington you have to f****** walk to, they will not come to you) I've used Via 3 times and each ride had drivers role play like they were playing GTA. (Both with attitude and how they drove)
5
-hi-mom Apr 3, 2026 +5
The ticket prices are ridiculous hope they end up having to give them away.
5
ConformistWithCause Apr 4, 2026 +4
>Bob Heere, professor of sports management at the University of North Texas, told KERA most games will likely be sold out, but the demand will come domestically rather than internationally. I did forget the thriving soccer community in *checks notes* Arlington, Texas

hack404 Apr 4, 2026 +4
This has happened at previous World Cups. They speculatively book out vast amounts of hotel space and release to the market what they can't sell.
4
Bizarrebazaars Apr 4, 2026 +3
Waiting on the same news in Seattle…
3
Ok_Deer1956 Apr 4, 2026 +3
It's wild that visa costs are becoming a bigger story than the matches themselves. Moving the tournament sounds extreme, but FIFA's hotel cancellations are a pretty clear signal something's broken.
3
Ok_Lingonberry2686 6 days ago +4
I heard people who booked hotels had their reservations cancelled only to find the rooms relisted at a higher price.
