In fairness, based on the original PS1 character design, Lara Croft is destined to have back issues

I want them to be as pointy and blocky as possible.

Turner is the fourth, fifth? actress to play Croft in a real body, but people still haven’t come to terms with the lack of polygonal t***. They should watch Madonna on tour in the 80s.

CapNCookM8 Apr 15, 2026 -117
Just funny you got downvoted in equal proportion for this lol. I think it's a gross comment, but so was the first one. Just funny that *those* b**** are fine to make a joke about but *these* b**** aren't. It's the same character, either it's fair game or not.

stingingsensation Apr 15, 2026 +105
One is a collection of polygons and one is a human being, might have something to do with it

CapNCookM8 Apr 15, 2026 -60
I'm aware, I agree, I can parse the difference. I just still find it funny and a little ridiculous. They're both bad jokes.
-60
Massive_Weiner Apr 15, 2026 +30
If you can understand the difference between talking about a video game character vs. talking about a real person, then you can understand why one is inappropriate while the other isn’t.
30
CapNCookM8 Apr 15, 2026 -42
Actually no, I find both inappropriate, that's why I find it funny. Y'all are just selective about what women's bodies you can talk about, I find it tasteless across the board. But go on. Pretend as if virtual polygons didn't have a real effect on the gross beauty standards that led to us all reprimanding somebody for talking about Turner's body. Y'all are just picking and choosing when you can comment on a woman's figure and justifying it to yourselves. It's ridiculous and funny.
-42
ElasticPlatypus Apr 15, 2026 +14
By that logic anybody who’s played Grand Theft Auto should go to prison for multiple counts of murder.
14
CapNCookM8 Apr 15, 2026 -3
Playing GTA is not the same as talking about the size of Franklin's p****. Playing as Lara Croft is not the same as commenting on her breasts. Hope that helps.
-3
ElasticPlatypus Apr 15, 2026 +8
It AB-SO-LUTELY does not help lol All it did was reveal you spend your free time fantasizing about GTA characters
8
Massive_Weiner Apr 15, 2026 -1
>as if virtual polygons didn’t have a real effect on[…] gross beauty standards Lara Croft’s character model is a reflection of conventional beauty standards, not the other way around. Her “idealized” figure does not influence reality because that standard is what created her in the first place. But beyond that point, why are you acting like objectifying Lara Croft is perpetuating harmful stereotypes/expectations against women? She’s not real. You can’t hurt her feelings; you can’t strip her autonomy away. You can do both things Sophie Turner, however, because she’s real, and the gross things that people say about her body can and will get back to her. Being able to lewd Lara Croft while simultaneously respecting the boundaries of her IRL actresses is that whole “reality vs. fantasy” thing that people love to talk about on Listnook. What’s appropriate when talking about fictional characters is obviously VERY different when talking about real people. You’ll scoff at this, but it is about having tact.
-1
CapNCookM8 Apr 15, 2026
I don't scoff at tact, I just don't think a big b**** = back pain is a tactful joke. You're arguing a chicken or egg scenario. Lara Croft looked as she did because of the societal standards, I agree, but you can't pretend that that doesn't mean she was used to perpetuate those very standards. Would you not agree the Audrey Hepburn was both a victim of toxic beauty standards while also being a representation of them? They often go hand in hand, that's why I don't believe you can just be a cool guy who turns it on and off when you see fit. Either make your jokes about b**** or don't, but acting like one is somehow in better taste than the other just because it's virtual is ridiculous. Acknowledging Turner has small b**** is not stripping her of her autonomy, jfc. Inapprorpirate and rude, yes, but that's just dramatic.
0
Massive_Weiner Apr 15, 2026 +1
>I just don’t think a big b**** = back pain is a tactful joke It’s totally fine if you don’t think it’s amusing, but the issue here is attempting to conflate that type of comment about a fictional character with someone doing that with a real life person. That’s a boundary being crossed. >she was used to perpetuate those very standards I don’t see a lot of people running around looking like Lara Croft, so I’m not sure about that. And I absolutely agree with your Audrey Hepburn example, but that’s about a *real* person who suffered *real* consequences when it came to objectification. Lara Croft cannot be victimized in that fashion unless you explicitly write her to be a victim. I can’t speak for anyone else here, but I *can* be a degenerate when it comes to fictional characters or my IRL partners, but still respect basic boundaries when talking to or interacting with real people. That’s just part of having a baseline level of maturity, so I won’t pretend that I’m Captain Feminist or anything like that for saying that real women shouldn’t be treated like video game characters. I’m not sure why you believe it’s impossible to “turn it off and on.” If you’re making a joke about Turner’s b**** being too small to belong in that role, that *is* demeaning because she’s a real human being, not some digital avatar that’s literally crafted to be as appealing as possible.

Yes but the content of the joke is what’s getting downvoted not the fact that they’re jokes. Saying “that anime character from one piece has a sore back cause her t*** are huge” is a comment on big b**** giving a woman a sore back and as it’s about anime it’s not actually about a person. Saying “that actress in real life couldn’t play that anime character because she has small t***” is no longer a joke about breast size but commentary on a real person.
12
CapNCookM8 Apr 15, 2026 -5
*I understand,* I just disagree. They're both jokes about the size of a woman's chest, one is just deemed okay because it's a virtual body and the other is an actual person. They're both in bad taste, imo, which is why it's funny, *to me*, one was so heavily downvoted and not the other. Okay I saw you edited to add more. I understand that nuance too, but the joke is still "lol she has huge t***, amirite?" You're just doing mental gymnastics to convince yourself it's actually in any better taste than saying a woman with small b**** wouldn't have back problems.
-5
odkfn Apr 15, 2026 +7
But you realise a video game character isn’t a real person, right? This seems to be the bit you’re missing. Saying a cartoon character has bad teeth is different than saying “that actress has terrible teeth.” One thing is an actual person. I mean, I don’t know why I’m responding, your opinion is clearly wrong, and it’s unclear if you’re just trolling at this stage.
7
CapNCookM8 Apr 15, 2026 +3
Yeah, but don't you think that if you call a video game character with bad teeth inadequate for them that people with similarly bad teeth may be made to feel inadequate for them? I can make fun of a gummy smile on a video game character, but anyone irl with a gummy smile should just chill because *obviously* I'm just talking about a video game character's gummy smile, right? These are not as separate of things as you are pretending they are. It's all the same conversation. Should we just throw the N-word around in a video games, too? It's all in good, it's in a video game. Doesn't matter at all.
3
Myrsky4 Apr 15, 2026 +1
Just my two cents: your comparison to the bad teeth isn't accurate IMO but if it was you'd be right. That's using a character as a patsy to make fun of a group of people. 100% agree with your thoughts about that. I so think this specific instance is different thought. The original comment IMO wasn't a joke making fun of people with big b****, instead it was making fun of that particular character and how badly she is designed, not in a realistic way, but in a her proportions are so wrong way. Like r/menwritingwomen is making fun of the creators more than anything.

The most recent Tomb Raider wasn't busty either, so the criticisms about the body type mismatch aren't reading the room. Not your comment specifically, just probably why the downvotes are abundant for the other dude.

Indeed, i'm not gonna critisize it, until i've seen it. Just like nobody could imagine Heath Ledger being the Joker

cronedog Apr 15, 2026 +207
For me, it's less an issue of fit, and more that I don't think she's a good actress.
207
Alastor3 Apr 15, 2026 +95
she isn't that good but let be fair, it's not like Lara Croft is a very versatile character, she is pretty stoic, if it follow the original trilogy
95
SuperDizz Apr 15, 2026 +48
I mean, Angelina rocked it hard, even if she made the character her own “I woke up this morning and I just hated everything” It’ll be hard for me to see anyone else as Lara Croft
48
GCU_ZeroCredibility Apr 16, 2026 +6
I thought she was good in the recent _Steal_ limited series. Remember that she was 14 when she started in Game of Thrones and was a child for much of the run. It's not surprising that she's a better actress now than in GoT. Not saying she's going to be the next Meryl Streep. Obviously. But I'll give her a shot based on her work in _Steal_.
6
captcraigaroo Apr 15, 2026 +21
She's very Dakota Johnson-esque in her acting abilities. Pretty dry, but still nice to look at. I'm hoping her acting range has improved since game of thrones
21
ax0r Apr 16, 2026 +11
Watched her in "Steal" on prime recently. I think she did a pretty good job. The show itself was alright to binge over a weekend, but nothing special.

How is she going to hold those dual pistols when one hand is always clutching her juul vape? 😂

Lara croft has plenty of depth in the new games. Also, thats no excuse because this is a dramatic series, not a PS1 game.
-7
Alastor3 Apr 15, 2026 +8
i said original game as in ps1 game since this is an adaptastion
8
Peru123 Apr 15, 2026 +36
There is something a little hysterical about the web conversation about her. She was good in GoT - played an unsympathetic character who then went through torture p***, so you could question the writing, but she was good in it. And after that no particular standout roles good or bad, not the best material to work with, only high profile job a poor superhero adaptation that's not indicative of anything. Say what you will about Waller-Bridge, she's unlike to get a lead for her show who can't deliver her particular brand of writing.
36
Pandaisblue Apr 16, 2026 +18
Honestly I think she played the early-mid season Sansa pretty well, I feel like people have short memories and are basing it off of later season 'hardened' Sansa but...I don't think you could give that arc with that writing to anyone and have it be great, with such excellent lines like "you should add leather to that breastplate" to a skilled armourer, and "what do dragons eat anyway?" while playing off of "I dun wan it". Assuming they're going with traditional Lara, she's a posh English woman who mostly needs to look athletic and say snarky lines. I'm not sure if anyone has looked at or heard of Sophie, but she's a posh English woman who looks athletic and can probably stretch her acting talent to saying some snarky lines.
18
Fresnobing Apr 15, 2026 +22
I think theres plenty of room for legitimate criticism of her acting in game of thrones that has nothing to do to do with the writing or whether people like her character or arc. Bit of a strawman. That being said, i agree it doesn’t mean she cant be better in something else years on
22
fcocyclone Apr 16, 2026 +4
>That being said, i agree it doesn’t mean she cant be better in something else years on yeah, its easy to forget that young actors are inexperienced in their careers just like anyone else at that age. I think most of us would hate if our whole lives we were judged on our work quality from jobs from the ages of 14-22.

jpb21110 Apr 15, 2026 +4
Thought she great in GoT and saw her in X-men 😭😭😷
4
Familiar-Banana-8116 Apr 16, 2026 +4
When she hurt her back she was quoted as saying this was her first time working out in a gym. This is an issue of fit.

Ancient-Dust3077 Apr 16, 2026 +2
she did not do a good job in game of thrones?
2
kremlingrasso Apr 16, 2026 +2
I'm sure she is a decent person and trying her best but if I'm honest she has an extremely unpleasant tone of voice. It's just such a major turnoff.
2
Known_Week_158 Apr 16, 2026 +1
She can give a good performance, but you need someone who can do action to play Lara Croft and she isn't someone with a lot of experience in that.
1
Louieyaa Apr 16, 2026 -7
Ledger also wasn't seen as a "good" actor either before his role as Joker. He was in some Dramadies and "A Knights Tale" (which I love) but is pretty much a dramady also. There's room for growth in everyone.
-7
Successful-Bat5301 Apr 16, 2026 +11
I mean, Ledger WAS nominated for an Oscar for Brokeback Mountain 3 years prior to the Joker...
11
Greatsnes Apr 16, 2026 +6
Lmfao what off-brand history have you been reading? Heath was nominated for an Oscar before he was ever Joker. He was seen as a rising star in Hollywood. In what world was he not seen as a good actor?
6
GoatShapedDestroyer Apr 16, 2026 +5
He was literally nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in *Brokeback Mountain*.
5
brontosaurusguy Apr 15, 2026 -27
The issue being that a good actress wouldn't take the role of a two  dimensional video game character

Heath can act though and had a proven track record of having range ..sophie Not so much
5
Llama_of_the_bahamas Apr 15, 2026 +13
Kinda different since Heath showed he can be a great actor before The Dark Knight. Sophie Turner hasn’t shown that yet.
13
Sexpistolz Apr 16, 2026 +2
Ehh, Heath crushed it in the roles he was in. The problem he had was type cast as the teen romance. No one thought he couldn’t act. Sophie on the other hand…
2
Bignate2001 Apr 17, 2026
Heath Ledger was always a talented actor, people just thought he was a poor fit for the Joker. Turner hasn't demonstrated any kind of acting talent remotely close to as good as Ledger.
0
brontosaurusguy Apr 15, 2026 -26
The joker is a nuanced character.  Tomb raider is not movie material....   Well anyway obviously I don't care, I'm out of here
-26
ColdCruise Apr 16, 2026 +2
The last three games gave the character a lot of depth and nuance.
2
Treelokc Apr 15, 2026 +61
I think her American accent is absolutely terrible, which is part of the reason why her Jean Grey was so bad. She's better when she gets to just be British, which Lara is, so maybe this will turn out okay.

You do know Lara Croft is English right?
7
smitty9112 Apr 15, 2026 +7
I'll share my opinion as I always do unprompted when I see this brought up. I think Dafne Keen would have been best for the role. Between x-23 in marvel and Jecki in The Acolyte, she has proven she has the level of badassery necessary. And she looks quite similar to Lara. At least significantly moreso than Sophie turner does.
7
DeadlyBannana Apr 16, 2026 +1
I think she looks the part. Not sure if she can play it as well though.
1
MisterIndecisive Apr 15, 2026 -15

-15
Reylo-Wanwalker Apr 15, 2026 +47
Eh it's Lara Croft not King Lear.
47
madbadcoyote Apr 15, 2026 -9
The Lara they've been teasing in promo images kinda demands charisma tho.
-9
kazh_9742 Apr 15, 2026 +21
She was good in the last few things I've seen her in. people in these subs keep regurgitating the same sound bites even when they're not relevant if they ever were.
21
sean_psc Apr 15, 2026 +18
She was good in GOT when the role allowed it (she had to deal with some of the most opaque character writing in the show), and was very good in the “Joan” miniseries.
18
MisterIndecisive Apr 15, 2026 -3
She's very wooden in every role. Only reason she gets anything including this is GOT
-3
Pledgeofmalfeasance Apr 15, 2026 +9
Oh no, however will she manage to really understand and embody the deep and complex role of Lara Croft.
9
kranitoko Apr 15, 2026 +2
In fairness, the old PS1 style acting wasn't that amazing either if that's what this is trying to capture, and if so, perfect I guess 😂

-1
ButtPlugForPM Apr 16, 2026 +1
No disrespect to her But nothing i've seen of hers shows she is leading lady material the closest is that thief series she was in.. She just seems so f****** wodden and always playing the same character. She put in the work though she looks f****** jacked in her socials but yeah if the acting is dog shit she's going to get dogpiled.

brontosaurusguy Apr 15, 2026 -24
I'm having a hard time imagining a tomb raider movie being good.  It's just an Indiana Jones rip off with t***
-24

Nonsense, the t*** have nothing to do with it. Indiana Jones could have t*** if he wanted. In fact, Indiana Jones *should* have t***!

I have a severe sciatica flare rn. This shit knocks you on your ass. Can walk after a week at approx 1mph with a cane. Cant sit for more than a couple minutes. Shit sucks dobkey balls. So i can empathise
19
tentativeteas Apr 16, 2026 +6
People underestimate how bad sciatic pain can be at its worst and also how much it messes with your life to have it be a mild constant. I didn’t sleep more than a couple hours for months because my leg was always burning to some degree and it was impossible to fully relax. Nerve pain is hell.
6
trendyworm Apr 16, 2026 +2
Hundred percent agree. I'd never even heard of it up until i started having the nerve irritation a few months ago. Tried to push though it and this is the result rip. It has been an excellent wake up call tho, even quit smoking in hopes of recovering faster. Very glad to hear it got better for you!!
2
tagen Apr 15, 2026 +3
wait you can’t sit, so you have to like stand all day? or are you pretty much stuck in bed? i’ve had back issues but never anything completely disabling, which i’m thankful for, back pain is so annoying
3
trendyworm Apr 16, 2026 +3
I have been mostly laying on my back and side rip. Every day, i go for short walks (15 minutes) 4-5 times a day to promote recovery, and when i go to the bathroom or get food i move a little. Other than that, sitting basically makes my right leg go numb and causes intense pain within 2-3 minutes, so i spend most of the day laying down. Throughout the day i have mild to moderate pain (2-5) constantly, but making a bad move hurts a lot more lol. Im trying to rest my spine as much as possible. Just gotta be patient. I did get some pretty sweet p********** though (oxys and pregabalin) but the effect is mild. Oxy just makes me sleepy and pregabalin i dont notice at all anymore. Hopefully it gets better soon, whine over.

Hayley Atwell would be perfect or just bring back Angelina. Especially as the games look like going back more to her classic persona (thank god lol) The Netflix show with Hayley Atwell voice acting was beyond dreadful and the 2018 movie was the definition of meh Make Tomb Riader fun again ffs lol

i think its partly motivated as a excuse if its bad or unpopular. They already started the same campaign with supergirl with the actress already saying "sexist fanboys dont want to see a strong female superman" when Supergirl is an iconic female character in DC comics, Its a "prepare for failiure" step where they can blame toxic fandoms on their own shortcomings.

The actress is insanely good looking, I'm not worried about that. She's not much of an actress but maybe she can pull off a stoic Lara

Asleep_Relation_9341 Apr 16, 2026 -3
She isnt either tbh (great looking or a great actor) Really strange choice but this is Phoebe Waller Bridge waller Bridge Waller and Amazon so expectations are rock bottom tbf. Couldn't be any worse than the Netflix show surely lol

What was wrong with Alicia Vikander?

Amazon doesn't wow me consistently on the quality level, but man they've landed some truly impressive IP. Rooting for Sophie.

The Boys, Fallout and Invincible have been great. Couldn’t finish season 2 of RoP though. What a waste of Tolkien’s work.

I haven't tried young Sherlock yet but I'm hopeful there

tfhermobwoayway Apr 16, 2026 -1
I mean Fallout was also a waste of the original work, it’s just that the original Fallout only appealed to a niche crowd so by making it mainstream they improved it.

For me it's less about looks and more about her acting chops. Although I wasn't her fan of her take of Jean Grey in X-Men, she killed it as Sansa because it felt like it was more natural to her, but she could prove me wrong with Lara Croft. I'm hoping that's the case...

I really, really like Sophie‘s casting for this role. I don’t know what it is, but she embodies (younger) Lara for me perfectly.

captaindealbreaker Apr 15, 2026 +11
For me it's that she LOOKS the part and has put in a ton of work to phsyically embody the role. She is JACKED now and she reminds me a lot of Linda Hamilton from T2. I'm not expecting groundbreaking performances from the show or anything, but at least as far as embodying the character goes, they made a FANTASTIC call with this one. Lara is supposed to be a top 1% athlete who explores caves and shit. At the very least, they won't have to cheat Turner being jacked lol

i dont really understand why she keeps getting so many projects. If i didnt know any better I would have thought she's a nepo baby or some big executive's side piece. Her acting isn't bad but it's mid at most, granted Lara Croft doesn't require that much talent in acting, but the problem is that i've seen her as jean grey and she is not good at doing action scenes, which is what matters for this movie. They should just bring Jolie back and make a movie about an old Lara Croft.

She is a normal child actress. She played a prominent role in arguably the biggest TV show of all time. She was always going to get roles based on that resume.

Yes to Jolie! She IS Lara

Are they sure that it won’t happen again?

the_rare_random Apr 17, 2026 +1
Hoping she kills it and turns it into a good franchise of movies

Significant-Turnip41 Apr 17, 2026 +1
Why.... Just because she was in a good show and cast very well there does not mean she is a good actress. She can kind of okay a stuck up stilted queen type. Because that's how she is... Anything else does not work

I'm mostly just worried that she's not athletic enough for the role. Nothing kills an action franchise faster then an action star who can't move well. She was a great actress in stuff like The Staircase but I have never seen her an action heavy role. Nothing is worse when your action lead can't run or fight well. One of the big things I didn't like about the new Mad Max was recasting Charlize Theron who I fully believe could kick my ass with Anya Taylor-Joy who looks like a small fall would break every bone in her body. Hollywood loves casting female action leads without auditioning for action.

It's not really about being athletic, per se, it's more about having the right frame and body type.
