Finally watched The Good Place. It really is as good as everyone says.

Posted by WillNeighbor

After seeing so many people praise it on various listnook threads, I’ve finally watched and finished The Good Place. It was funny (and this is coming from someone who doesn’t like The Office but loves Trailer Park Boys and American Dad) It was emotional, really tackled a lot of different themes that you don’t really get in a cable network show. The writing was very good I think. The chemistry felt off the charts. Loved the cameos, the casting, liked how it was shorter episodes (20-30 minute episodes) Overall, I just think it’s a great show, well worth the praise and well worth a watch. For context, my favorite shows are Halt and Catch Fire, Dark, Game of Thrones, The Americans, Breaking Bad etc. So this was kind of out of my normal/comfort zone for serious watches.

Jason just hanging in the forest for however many Jeremy Beremys always kills me.

bakedpatata Mar 31, 2026 +239
I like that he basically became the enlightened monk he was pretending to be in the beginning.

DiTrastevere Apr 1, 2026 +170
They *all* developed the qualities they lacked at the beginning of the series.  Jason was a hyperactive chaos gremlin who learned how to sit and reflect.  Chidi was a neurotic overthinker who learned how to be decisive.  Tahani was a status-obsessed socialite who learned how to be humble and hardworking.  And Eleanor was a selfish dirtbag who learned how to love and be loved.  They each got a perfectly complete character arc that made sense. Just really excellent work.

Alis451 Apr 1, 2026 +77
They also all became exactly the character they started as in the first episode. Jason became an enlightened monk. Chidi taught ethics to the world. Eleanor became a humanitarian, saving all humans and Mindy in particular. Tahani literally plans people's afterlife, the perfect party. Michael becomes the leader of The Good Place.

And Janet became a real girl! No wait, what happened to Janet?

She became a Good Place Janet.

zephyrtr Apr 1, 2026 +38
I hate to be that guy, but ... it's spelled Jeremy Bearimy Just cause the dot on the "i" is really important because that's Tuesdays. And also July. And *occasionally* that moment on the Bearimy timeline is the *time moment* where nothing never occurs. So, you get it.
38
Upbeat_Tension_8077 Mar 31, 2026 +77
He's my favorite twist on a typical loveable dumb character in a sitcom, especially with>!him being the first one to realize that The Good Place isn't what it seems!< His ending was totally on-brand for his personality with >!him wanting to catch up with Chidi through the final door!<
77
LetsTryAnal_ogy Apr 1, 2026 +25
Technically, Jason wasn’t the first one. But was the first on just one of the many iterations.
25
delkarnu Apr 1, 2026 +37
I think they're referring to his >!prank show!< comment in the first season.
37
mygamethreadaccount Apr 1, 2026 +6
very much one of my all time favorite moments on television. the emotional whiplash goes crazy.
6
fullmetalasian Mar 31, 2026 +301
My wife and I loved that show. But she was like she was never watching the ending again. She passed a few years ago and now I find myself, despite being solidly agnostic, hoping that there is an afterlife and it is how the Good Place depicted it
301
amazingspiderman23 Apr 1, 2026 +36
Yeah that's the beauty of the show, giving you a vision of the afterlife that you want to believe in, and that even if they enter the bad place, they will eventually reach the good place and then into the good deeds you do
36
WillNeighbor Mar 31, 2026 +62
sorry for your loss. hope the show has given you comfort in those thoughts
62
fullmetalasian Mar 31, 2026 +37
Thanks. It has. I like to think of my wife being in the good place living it up

arcwh1sper Mar 31, 2026 +96
Yeah, it’s one of the few modern sitcoms where I didn’t dread the finale. That last door montage wrecked me in the nicest possible way.
96
loconessmonster Mar 31, 2026 +138
Well now I have to finish it.
138

There's really very few sitcoms that had an ending equally as good. They just nailed it.

The show meanders a bit before the end, but they really drive it home with the finale. Worth watching if you enjoyed any of what you watched.

Lucky!!

septesix Mar 31, 2026 +38
It gave itself a task no less than answering what the ideal fulfilling end state for a soul would be, a question that must have puzzled many theologians over the millenniums, AND it answered it in about as perfectly a way as one could expect. I have a hard time thinking of a more perfect ending.
38
ucbiker Mar 31, 2026 +31
It’s such a great finale but emotionally I just can’t do it. I end rewatches with Chidi and Eleanor holding each other forever.
31
chiefbrody62 Mar 31, 2026 +13
Same here. I'll fall asleep watching it, but skip the finale if it's on when I'm still awake. I can only watch it when I'm in a certain mind space since it's so emotional.

After the reveal at the end of the first season I was surprised they made Season 2 equally good. And then two more!
44
QuintoBlanco Mar 31, 2026 +11
That's so important for a show like this. As much as I enjoyed each single episode, it was the overall narrative that kept me hooked. Great storytelling.

Incredible ending. Maybe my favorite end to any show.

Yea, but no matter how many of the 802 times I rewatched it, I always see the clues to find out, >!"This is the bad ending!"!<

It makes me sob every time.

Ted Danson has not really been off of American TV screens since Cheers. 44 years at this point. Why? Because Ted Danson makes any show better by his presence. He's that forking good.
295
notches123 Mar 31, 2026 +65
His performance in Bored to Death was transcendent.
65
crackanape Mar 31, 2026 +8
That show took a real weird turn, but Danson was delightful in it from start to finish.
8
rcinmd Mar 31, 2026 +53
He was great in Inside Man as well, Such a great goofball.
53
Randvek Mar 31, 2026 +21
I f****** love that show. It’s only a little bit funny and it’s completely corny but it’s such a feel good show that you can’t help but smile watching it.
21
DanOfMan1 Mar 31, 2026 +11
A Man on the Inside, I haven’t seen a show capture SF’s charm so well since Monk

In the words of one of my actual friends, "Ya basic!" Thats a human insult. It's devastating. You're devastated right now.

Alis451 Apr 1, 2026 +6
According to the Podcast, that line was said by a fellow audience member to i think D'arcy and a writer when they went to a concert.
6
chiefbrody62 Mar 31, 2026 +18
According to The Good Place podcast, which is great, Danson is a joy to work with on set. He's super positive and just really into whatever he's working on, and will even hang out when his scenes are done for moral support or just to see it being shot.
18
Good_old_Marshmallow Mar 31, 2026 +47
The heel turn where he first reveals he the bad guy with that head twist and evil laugh is some of the best modern tv soap opera acting we have. It’s the best scene in the whole show
47
Toby_O_Notoby Apr 1, 2026 +20
It was also improvised. The scene as written is he becomes petulant as they spoiled his fun: "Oh man! I can't believe you figured it out!" So it was supposed to be this all-seeing all-knowing guy acting like a child that lost his dessert. On set they were worried it wasn't working so Ted said "Let me try something" and did the laugh on the next take.
20
ersomething Apr 1, 2026 +5
That evil l grin he had on his face was just perfect too. Something about the upturned corner of his mouth really sold the evil glee at their realization and fear.
5
Taikeron Mar 31, 2026 +10
This is a good place to remind everyone of Becker, where Ted Danson is a grumpy neighborhood doctor in the Bronx. Incidentally, one of the few shows where Ted Danson's wife cameos, another one being The Good Place.
10
FRESH_TWAAAATS Apr 1, 2026 +2
He’s incredibly humble about it too. To hear him talk about his career it practically borders on impostor syndrome. Or he’s an actor and that’s what he wants me to think lol
2
wvgeekman Apr 1, 2026 +2
People who worked with him before Cheers have said similarly nice things about him, so I get the idea he’s a fairly genuine dude. Gonna make myself believe it, at least. Too much disappointment these past few years.
2
princesspool Mar 31, 2026 +69
When it's time for a rewatch, you'll realize how much stuff you missed. Such a beautiful show, truly one of the best. Comedies don't often make it to the best of all time lists, but this one deserves it.
69
TheNerdChaplain Mar 31, 2026 +35
They started doing an official Good Place podcast after the second season, hosted by Marc Evan Jackson (he played Shawn). It was a watchthrough podcast and they watched every episode and talked to cast, crew, writers, and staff that helped work on it!
35
daveydesigner Mar 31, 2026 +16
One of my favorite podcasts. I got “Go do something good” tattooed on me.
16
TheNerdChaplain Mar 31, 2026 +3
Oh I LOVE that idea!
3

…it’s a Molotov cocktail, with “Go do something good” written on a ribbon that wraps around it.  BORTLES!

He is a PHENOMENAL podcast host. A++ would listen through again for the 3rd time.

> you'll realize how much stuff you missed I spend way too much time freeze-framing to read all the store and restaurant name puns :)
10
jpcardier Mar 31, 2026 +13
There was soooo many! IIRC, one of writers got into almost an obsession about making the restaurant puns, and the showrunner gave her a legal pad so she could write all of them down to get it out of her system before the writers got into story breakdown
13
cjinct Mar 31, 2026 +6
That would be Megan Amram, who has a twisted and delightful brain LOL

bacchic_frenzy Apr 1, 2026 +10
I’ve been teaching No Exit to my theater students. They were all dramatically bored and hating it until I told them the whole idea behind The Good Place could be found in the script. Suddenly they’re all loving Sartre and existentialism!
10
fakieTreFlip Apr 1, 2026 +11
Michael Schur is super into philosophy, so much so that he wrote a book about it (How to Be Perfect: The Correct Answer to Every Moral Question). Some of the cast of The Good Place even contributes to the narration of the audiobook

I think about the ending more often than I should think about a TV show.
80
Upbeat_Tension_8077 Mar 31, 2026 +40
Since I actually have big fears about death and the idea of an afterlife, the ideas introduced in the last two episodes in particular sent me into an existential crisis

Baragwin2 Mar 31, 2026 +6
I'm not religious, or have ever settled onto one particular concept of the afterlife that made sense to me, until The Good Place. I choose to believe that's the answer. It makes me feel very optimistic about life, and makes grief softer.

Holy forking shirtballs I thought I was the only one.  I’m a miserable grump, but this show is a warm glow. One of the best shows ever.  Sometimes I still think of Ted Danson’s demonic cackle.

I think limiting the pool to the '10s is unnecessary.

I just ran across Janet (D'Arcy Beth Carden) in something called Barry. Not sure about it yet, but I loved her in TGP.

Barry is fantastic I don’t remember her on it though. Hard to remember anyone when NoHo Hank exists
17

She's a regular in the acting group and has some plot points but not one of the more memorable characters
13

She and Simone (the neuro scientist Chidi dates) are both in the Theater group.
4

I got a few episodes in and stopped when Janet was begging them to not push the kill button. I restarted at the first episode so my wife could experience it. I told her "Janet is my favorite character," which she didn't get until that begging scene came up. We lost it when she started the fight in the bar.
25
Snuffaluphagus_1 Apr 1, 2026 +9
Just put a big smile on my face thinking of that beach scene, "LOOK AT MY CHILDREN, LOOK AT THEM"

My wife and I do that to each other whenever we share pictures of our kids.
3

There's an ep where she plays all the characters and one where theres like 30 versions of Janet so keep watching

The bar fight was one of my favorite scenes in the show lol.
5
HollowDakota Mar 31, 2026 +17
Yep, always has been one of the best live action shows of the modern era. So much so that a lot of other tv shows try to imitate the lighting and art design from The Good Place which can be difficult It sticks the landing and has arguably one of the happiest and most fulfilling endings of a show, I cry everytime I also shout “BORTLES” constantly and yearn for a Molotov cocktail Shame Netflix lost it
17

Lol this show is the only reason I know who Bortles is.

And when you get done with that, go back to Parks and Rec. Unfortunately, give it to Season 3 to get up to Good Place quality imo.
9

I agree. Once Mark leaves, the show really starts clicking. Thankfully, the first season is only 6 episodes.
2
BIGD0G29585 Mar 31, 2026 +13
Chidi’s explanation of death as a wave gets me every time. I need to give this show a rewatch.
13
jc_chienne Mar 31, 2026 +41
I low-key got kind of mad at my friend for not giving this show a chance. She said "yeah I tried to watch the first episode but the humor was so dumb and childish and the twist was so obvious that I already had the ending figured out, so I turned it off halfway through. I don't see why you like it at all" she thought she had the whole show pegged cause she figured out they were in the bad place! I'm like girl that's not 'the whole show' you're missing the point!!
41
gozer33 Mar 31, 2026 +20
It definitely got better as time went on. It really gets going after the bad place reveal.
20
chiefbrody62 Mar 31, 2026 +3
Yeah, and the reveal makes rewatches so much more interesting. I thought it was okay on first watch of the first season, then it really got cooking. Now I've seen it thru dozens and dozens of times and it's one of my favotire shows. I know a lot of people that gave up during the first season and I keep telling them to keep watching.
3
BadAssachusetts Mar 31, 2026 +25
>the twist was so obvious “Jason figured it out!?” I love the meta joke making fun of people correctly guessing the twist.
25
chiefbrody62 Mar 31, 2026 +6
"Oh, this one really hurts."
6
fearthainne Mar 31, 2026 +9
This is my brother. He won't watch more than the first few episodes because it's "just dumb and doesn't grab" him or whatever. At this point, after several years gently poking him about it at Christmas, I'm just going to talk about it like he's seen it. Maybe *actually* knowing the twist will get him interested, and if not, it doesn't matter if I spoil anything anyway.
9

ME TOO it definitely one of those TV shows that live up to the hype

6

I just binged this for the second time last week. Like, I watched all of it in a little over a week. It's so addictive and feel good. Until that last episode. My god. 😭
5
ShepardCom Mar 31, 2026 +7
The Good Place is the top TV show I could experience for the first time again. It's still good on rewatch, but that first watch through without knowing what will happen was the most gripped I've been watching TV. It is absolutely incredible. Keep it sleezy ya'll.
7
lalauniverse Mar 31, 2026 +5
When the last season aired it was split into two halves. My sister had just caught up and we were talking about it a lot, and the similarities we felt with Eleanor as we were also two Arizona Trashbags. My sister died in a car accident before the final half of the season aired. It was a tragedy for my family, just an excruciating loss. That last episode hurt so much, but it was so healing. I felt honestly really grateful that there was a pop cultural moment in time where people were talking about life and death and grief. It made me feel less alone. I still revisit that last monologue with Chidi when the waves of grief wash over me. Then the waves return to the ocean where they came from, and where they're supposed to be.
5
darkbladetrey Mar 31, 2026 +2
Last episode really helped me view life/ death differently. Everyone I’ve ever lost I hope has gone to the good place. And once they have had enough they leave it. SUCH A GREAT SHOW.

5
Superb_Outcome976 Mar 31, 2026 +3
the fact that it never felt like it was dragging just to hit a syndication goal is honestly the best part. most network shows start recycling plot points by season three but this one felt like it actually had a plan for the ending from day one. it is super refreshing.
3
rcinmd Mar 31, 2026 +6
I don't generally like corporate sit-coms because I feel like most network shows are too predictable. I happened to find it when I was looking for something to watch while on the elliptical and I love Ted and Kristen and it was about the time I worked out so it made sense. The first season and the ending of that was not something I saw coming. It's so well written that even the actors didn't know. It's one of the rare shows that I'll rewatch just because it was so good. >!eta: also a lot of people loved the ending, and while I found it to be an excellent story it did give me existential dread that eventually the universe will collapse and a new big bang will happen, dooming us all to having to exist again. That's probably why Chidi was the first to walk through the door because his character was nothing but existential dread (despite Jason saying he was.)!<

Yeah according to the podcast, no actors other than Danson and Bell knew about the twist, not even "real Eleanor", until that episode was being shot.

They filmed a video where Michael Shure read the script to them and all of them were completely gagged. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Bhyin0HaLU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Bhyin0HaLU) It was a validating moment for me lol.

I found the show really engaging and fun through most of its run and then that last season...I'm not religious in any sense but it fully changed what my perception of the afterlife would even be in a way that made me go "of course that would be what happens" sort of way. Incredibly smart and thoughtful throughout even when it's being funny.

I actually just finished this last week. It definitely had some pretty generic moments for me and got a couple of chuckles out of me but I did really enjoy the ending. It made it go from a "eh, it's alright" to a genuinely great show just from the ending. I'm an absolute sucker for poignant stuff though.

Read or listen to the philosophy book Mike Schur wrote, too. It’s very good.

It’s better. Imagine a wave…. And I’m a puddle of tears every single time

I tell everyone it’s 2 years of philosophy wrapped up in a tv show, and that it nails my opinion on what happens when we die. Brilliant show. Anyone that knows their story before it starts, and end right when it’s supposed to even though they could have easily been given more seasons due to it’s popularity, just brilliant. It’s ok to leave money on the table to tell the story right.

Rewatching season one with knowledge of the twist in mind is such a rewarding experience. Ted Danson is so good and you pick up on so many little things he does that play very different the second time. A subtle sneer here, a mischievous gleam in his eye there or a line delivery that seemed benign the first time but sinister the second time through.

It’s one of the best shows to ever get made.

I watched it as it was being released and it almost lost me there in the middle because honestly where was this going and someone turned on the afterburners and the story got amazing. I’m glad you loved it as well

It’s a ton of fun. But so many decisions. I’m getting a stomachache.

Did you avoid the spoilers

WillNeighbor Mar 31, 2026 +3
yeah for the most part. but when people are always talking about twists and spoilers and whatnot, you kind of lose the wow factor and instead go "okay this is what everyone's talking about"... so it doesn't really hit the same

Making me consider rewatching it after I dropped it after season 2?

I still find it incredibly weird that people don't like The Office.

It feels like a show I would want to rewatch but I can’t.  The ending nearly destroyed me and I am not sure I can do it again.   I mean that in all the best ways!

Incredibly beautiful and thoughtful show.

mrwho995 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I think the first 2 seasons are very strong, 3 is a notable step down, and then 4 is mostly pretty bad up until the excellent finale.

Another one you could try if you haven’t already is resident alien, it’s hilarious!

Absolutely a brilliant show...clever, smart, funny, thought provoking. And the ending where Eleanor and Chidi are sitting on the couch saying goodbye...OMG.

How many episodes before you were hooked?! I’ve tried watching it twice… 3rd times a charm?

I don't know why exactly but the ending was so perfect but so profoundly sad to me. The saddest I've ever been for TV characters. 10/10 recommend the emotional experience.

I love Mike Schur. His shows are just great. His book is really good too if anyone hasn’t read it! Hilarious and some good life lessons.

The wave returns to the ocean. This scene had helped me through several losses, most notably a very sudden loss of my childhood friend. She watched the show and loved it too. Rest in power, Nat.

Yes sir. Glory to Eleanor, Chidi, Jason, Jamilla, Janet and Ted Danson

I have a single not even complaint about the good place, where th heck did the good place committee bugger off to after they gave their power to Michael ?

I was pretty sure it was going to be a one season show and then they managed to pull off a fabulous 4 seasons

It's a shame you probably knew the twist. We knew something was off but at least I was surprised by the reveal.

HYDRAULICS23 Apr 1, 2026 +1
One of my favorite shows. Never thought a comedy would have me so emotional when it ended. Bojack Horseman is the only other comedy I can think of where it was all fun and games in the beginning and then had me feeling existential dread towards the end.

THE TIME KNIFE?

Along similar lines I would recommend shrinking. It's a good show balancing grief, mental health and comedy pretty well.

It's an enjoyable watch, but I disagree with the central premise of the show. It's easy to be a saint in paradise.

I know I keep saying it, but that laugh, chuckle, whatever it is, is delicious.

If you like it, watch A Man on the Inside, and >!pretend it's a show about Michael living out his life as a human like I do lol.!< Same director/creator. And Ted Danson basically dresses exactly like his character Michael from The Good Place, and very similar mannerisms. The show also has a few Good Place Easter eggs, and it is just such a feel-good show.
