Finland’s Stubb says he’s most ‘pro-American’ European leader amid Trump criticism of allies

That headline is just shitty clickbait. He's not shilling for America or kissing Trump's arse. >In response, he said it’s three-fold: the false assumption that every country would move toward some kind of liberal democracy after the Cold War, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and all being accelerated by the change in administration in the United States, namely the global superpower defining itself as MAGA. >“It’s anti-globalization, it’s anti-international institutions, it withdraws from the climate Paris Accords, withdraws from the (International Criminal Court), it doesn’t work within the framework of traditional international law,” Stubb said. >Stubb said despite his belief that “the United States will find themselves in quite a lonely place,” he still considers himself an “avid trans-Atlanticist.” >“I mean, I’m the most pro-American president in Europe,” he said. Also: >When asked by Kapelos whether he hesitates to call himself pro-American because that’s largely an unpopular opinion in Europe — and in Canada in the current context — Stubb said he’s “not in it for brownie points or political points.” >“And I don’t think that America is President Trump,” he also said.

So he’s pro American in the same way Steve Rosenberg is pro Russian… loves the country and many of its people and has done for decades and just hoping to wait this abhorrent current regime out in the hopes for a brighter future

I watched his podcast during Covid and though the very early Ukraine War, before politics when he was professor in Italy and he is a straight shooter and very pro-America. He lived in the USA for a number of years while attending college.

I think more people should assert their love for America, or at least the American people, while criticizing Trump uniquely. Its easy to say "Trump wouldn't be president if Americans didn't vote for him", but I don't think spitting at the idea of Americans willing using their freedom to vote is as smart as others do. Seriously, people on here have said people shouldn't have been allowed to even vote for Trump as if Americans literally shouldn't have had the freedom to do so.

Dry_Magazine796 2 days ago +1
Il take the point further, americans are being gaslit at an unprecedented level and it started out very soft-transcending to blatant in-your-face BS. A lot of Americans never had a chance when you look at how uneducated they are. Its not entirely fair to say they deserve what they voted for when they may have had good intentions (excluding the obvious bad faith actors and evil scum who actually want this, think more single mom who could use more of her tips, something trump campaigned on), and its certainly not fair to liberals like me who saw it coming and voted to prevent it. Me and every liberal i know were convinced we would win the 2024 election. That day trump was reelected and the country turned red from president to senate, it became clear that i too had no clue what was going on. The repubs got on the internet that week and roasted us alive. It was the dumbest i ever felt. This problem growing in america IS bigger than us, we still love our allies AND WE STILL WANT YOU TO LOVE US.

Watching the president of the United States get so routinely manipulated by people who are doing so in an incredibly obvious way reminiscent of how one might soothe a 3 year old has been quite a trip.

>Stubb said despite his belief that “the United States will find themselves in quite a lonely place,” he still considers himself an “avid trans-Atlanticist.” >“I mean, I’m the most pro-American president in Europe,” he said. He's basically saying he believes the EU & US working together is better for both. That Trump isn't the USA, and that what Trump is doing, isn't helping anyone. He's saying he is pro-American, not pro-Trump.

I don't hate America or Americans per se, but I despise the anti-intellectualism that has been a major current in American culture since before the Republic even existed. It is this that allowed Trump to come to power and it will continue to fester and be a drag on America's reputation and standing long after his term ends.

He's the most American president there's ever been though.  Donald trump is basically what you'd get if you turned up every typical American character trait all the way to max
-9
randomusername76 3 days ago +13
Literally, no; no nation is just a constellation of its worst traits; that’s the stupidest reduction you can do. America produced Trump, but it also produced Obama; going further back in history, it produced McCarthy, but it also produced Eisenhower; Kissinger is no more ‘American’ than MLK. Trump is as uniquely American as any other American president - you can make the fair claim he is unique in just how godawful he is, but that doesn’t make him _more_ American, it just means he manifests a different part of American traits, one that generally didn’t hit the executive branch.
13
MexicanEssay 3 days ago +6
That's c***. If that was true, the US would have never managed to become a superpower. What may be true is that he embodies every character trait the US cultivated after they started believing their own American Exceptionalism bullshit, that they're irreplaceable, and that the US's success is simply a result of them being the US, rather than the result of a fuckton of hard work, skilled cooperation, manipulation and exploitation of other countries, attracting the right immigrants, and generally being more reliable than the alternatives.

williherne 3 days ago +8
There’s a difference between being pro-American and supporting a specific US administration. From Finland’s perspective, this is about security, not ideology. We share a long border with Russia, and NATO, especially the US, is a key part of our deterrence. You don’t have to agree with everything the US does to recognize that the transatlantic relationship is still strategically important.

Stubb is the definition of an elite globalist: very slick, smart and arrogant. Not really something MAGA likes, but Stubb was a junior national team level golfer and that gave him access to Trump. It seems that that relationship is cooling down now because Stubb will always be very pro-EU and pro-free markets when Trump is clearly trying to drive a wedge and destroy them.
7
UsualDue 2 days ago +8
being smart and dressing well makes you "elite globalist" in negative sense? alright buddy
8
uusrikas 2 days ago +4
I don't mean the globalist part negatively. I voted for him
4
Syndiotactics 2 days ago +4
Eh, there are more reasons for that. Stubb comes from a very wealthy and privileged family background in a historically privileged minority background. He is absolutely of an elite background, he is known to be insanely arrogant in Finland (even though he has managed to pull the presidency off well), and he is also known to be very much a globalist. So the description is spot on, doesn't make him bad. The only reason why the rural right wing voted for this elite globalist urbanite at all was because they hated the other candidate more. (the other candidate was/is homosexual) This has been confirmed by various polls and analyses.

ExternalTree1949 1 day ago +2
>Stubb comes from a very wealthy and privileged family background That's an exaggeration. Sure, his background is firmly upper middle class.

Fair enough. I was thinking in terms of his persona and presentation. I'd call Kanye West insanely arrogant. Of course, I've never dealt with Stubb personally and can't perceive him from within Finnish culture.

1
DateMasamusubi 3 days ago -1
Finland is acutely aware of the threat that they face from Russia. Trump is a despicable person but his criticisms of NATO allies has some merit. Take Britain, taking 3 weeks to deploy a single warship to the Mediterranean. The Royal Navy only has 6 destroyers, 4 of which are under refit. South Korea has 13 destroyers in comparison.

The countries that border Russia are the most pro-American countries in Europe because they know that without the US, Russia will take over those countries. Western European countries have shown that they are weak, corrupt and unwilling to do the bare minimum to improve their own defenses and punish Russia for its war crimes and terrorism. They haven't even expelled the Russian ambassadors from their countries. If they're not willing to do even that, then I don't think they're willing to defend Eastern Europe when Russia invades. Hence, the Eastern European support for the US.

Hardly_lolling 2 days ago +1
You are obviously confusing Finnish president being pro-America to Finland being particularly pro-America. It is not, so your statement is false. Some countries neighboring Russia are very pro-America, namely Poland, but not all.

It's been interesting to see America lose its standing so quickly. Yes it can still throw its weight around via military and economy, but as a global leader, it's fallen so, so far. Trump keeps taking L's on pretty much everything.

AntiTrollSquad 2 days ago
The current US administration doesn't operate like that. For them if you are anti-Trump you are anti-American, and that's what they are doing internally as well, in quite an open manner.

Of course he is, he is a capitalist, he admires the system in USA which makes people like him get filthy rich and he wants in on that, too. Of course he plays it as being a diplomatic but in the traditionally Finnish fashion he's saying what he's actually thinking.
