Fire is spreading in the Chernobyl exclusion zone after drone crash
A drone has crashed in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, causing a fire that has spread to 12 square kilometres of land. Dry weather, strong winds and the presence of land mines are complicating efforts to bring the blaze under control

At least it happened, again, ~~after~~ before the damage was fully repaired from the last time it happened.
33
masklinn 4 days ago +42
The damage from last time is not repaired let alone fully. The fire was contained and stopped but the NSC is compromised and needs to be repaired which will take a while, the decommissioning timeline has been pushed back years.
42
RyanNotBrian 3 days ago +3
This can be a little misleading. The breach has been repaired, no radiation is getting out. This is what most people are concerned about. But you're right, they haven't completed the internal repairs needed to dismantle the old reactor.
3
pyggi 3 days ago +2
There have been temporary repairs but I think the post above is referring to longer term repairs needed after damage from the first breach
2
RyanNotBrian 3 days ago +1
Yes, that's true. The long term damage is bad because they can't remove the radiation source. But without context it sounds like there's a gaping hole spewing rads back into the world.

Is there a good reason they coded that as “drone crash started a fire” and not just “drone attack started a fire”?

I'm gonna assume that Chernobyl was not the intended target and that it instead crashed into the area. The article does mention recent attacks, and the previous attacks on the area.

Russian has targeted the dome multiple times and I wouldn't put it past the inhumans to cause wild fire to put more people at risk of radiation yet again.
3
EntityLtdCo 4 days ago +4
Just remember that when the chernoble event occurred these people denied that a melt down was possible, trapped the civilians and scientists at the reactor, severed communications with the outside world, and began gaslighting other countries who thought something was up. Now, they have clearly targeted the dome with 'accidental' strikes to restart the runaway reaction. They are not to be trusted.
4
RyanNotBrian 3 days ago +2
This isn't true, they can't restart the runaway reaction.
2
Kaellian 4 days ago +8
Fangorn Forest aside, forest rarely make good military targets.
8
MyDumLemon 4 days ago +4
in this case it aerosolizes the soil contaminants; so not a bad target depending on your objectives.

jews4beer 5 days ago +26
>The Chernobyl exclusion zone is frequently overflown by Russian drones en route to Kyiv and other targets within Ukraine.  So I mean yea it was an attack. But it's possible the drone itself malfunctioned or was shot down. The article doesn't say, but it's not like the presence of the drone itself doesn't imply it was an attack already. And there is the possibility it was a Ukrainian drone also. That's not to place blame for the situation they're in, but mistakes do happen.
26
Middle_Profit1057 4 days ago
For Ukraine that would mean flying drone through Belarus which is not something that happens

Today, 7 May 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Russia to present a note of protest condemning the incident that occurred earlier this morning on the territory of the Republic of Latvia, when several unmanned aerial vehicles entered the municipalities of Rēzekne, Balvi and Ludza from the airspace of the Russian Federation. The representative of the Russian Embassy was informed that Russia, by waging a war of aggression against Ukraine, is creating risks of security incidents across the wider region. https://www.mfa.gov.lv/en/article/ministry-foreign-affairs-expresses-protest-russia-over-drone-incident-latgale-morning

Friendly_Soil6617 5 days ago +5
Ask the ruzzians why Ukrainian drones flew from their territory to Latvia. These aren't missing strikes; the ruzzians deliberately redirected the drones toward Latvia from their own territory.

Bit of a clickbait title. The exclusion zone is fairly large, about 1,000 square miles. Forest fires happen quite regularly and are dealt with by firefighters. It's not the unprecedented apocalyptic scenario some make it out to be. Right now, it's also raining in the area around Chernobyl: https://www.accuweather.com/en/ua/kyiv/324505/weather-radar/324505

Vangovibin 4 days ago +15
“It’s raining in Chernobyl” is like “it’s snowing on Mt Fuji” in that it’s 7 syllables so you can use it in haikus.
15
fleshfinder420 4 days ago -38
Truth. Chernobyl isn’t even an active nuclear site either, and what’s left is encased in concrete and steel. A fire isn’t gonna do shit Your downvotes dont negate what I said. Do your homework on Chernobyl. There’s a great channel on YT called the Chernobyl guy or something and he breaks down almost every aspect of the disaster
-38
TauCabalander 4 days ago +47
The soil is contaminated. That's why there is an exclusion zone. Raising dust and smoke from contaminated trees and plants is not a good thing.
47
fleshfinder420 4 days ago -12
There’s no cities within at least 20km of Chernobyl, it will be ok.
-12
TauCabalander 3 days ago +5
Smoke travels a lot further than that, and can even go global. example: Americans are all too familiar with the fires in Canada.
5
GoldGlove2720 3 days ago +4
Wildfire smoke can travel across the globe…
4
fleshfinder420 3 days ago -7
That’s true but fires don’t generate radioactivity, there’s concentrations in the soil but this isn’t the first or last wildfire to hit Chernobyl
-7
RyanNotBrian 3 days ago +5
The others are right. Plenty draw the radioactive particles out if the soil and store them. When the tree burns, the smoke contains the particles and spread very far on the wind or get under the upper atmosphere. Sure, it's not as bad as the original disaster, but that was off-the-charts bad.
5
GoldGlove2720 3 days ago +3
No shit fires don’t generate radioactivity. No one is saying that. When there is a wildfire smoke carries radioactive particles to other areas.
3
fleshfinder420 3 days ago -2
Yeah obviously but people are acting like this is some big deal. Wildfires happen every year dude

>The Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve (CREBR) wrote in a Telegram post that around 12 square kilometres of land, located to the south-east of the Ukrainian town of Chernobyl and the nuclear plant’s former cooling ponds, are burning due to a drone crash – but didn’t give details on the type or origin of the device. As of Friday afternoon, some 331 people and 75 pieces of equipment are involved in the emergency response. >“It’s really big. Guys who are working on [the] fire line are breathing air with high concentration of radionuclides,” says Denys Vyshnevskiy at the CREBR. “After the shift, they check concentration radionuclides in the body.” South-east of the town of Chernobyl is near the river, that should make it easier to get the fire under control. Has anyone seen a source with more details about the amount of radiation being released?
20
tdgros 5 days ago +19
the first sentence after your quote is "Vyshnevskiy says that 5 to 10 kilometres from the fire, the radiation levels are normal, and there is little risk of contamination outside the exclusion zone."
19
jdorje 4 days ago +9
Radiophobia is understandable, even if super wrong. The health impact of breathing in radiation from a forest fire is nonexistent. The health impact of firefighters - already highly exposed to toxic smoke in their jobs - breathing in a lot of forest fire smoke can be... almost any level depending on how much.
9
SmokeInABottle 4 days ago +1
What about the radiation levels in the f****** smoke though and when that rains down?
1
ppitm 4 days ago +7
> Has anyone seen a source with more details about the amount of radiation being released? Negligible. The Red Forest (most contaminated part of the Zone) burned down in 2020 and radiation levels barely increased. It's not really a threat.
