Looks like a Skins (UK Teen TV show) poster

Looks like an American Apparel ad
338
TheShuggieOtis Mar 21, 2026 +44
Considering Dov Charney is (unfortunately) a Montrealer, it makes sense.
44
WorthPlease Mar 21, 2026 +23
So funny american apparel was founded by a canadian. Such a shame because he did a lot of work promoting gay rights, immigration rights, and also keeping his production factories in the US and also trying to get offshore garment manufacturer's to pay their workers a better wage.
23
o-rama Mar 21, 2026 +17
He did so much good, but was an awful weirdo creep capable of awful things. I have so many anecdotes. I’m glad I came out relatively unscathed, but it still haunts me. I watched the documentary that didn’t even touch the really truly awful stuff and I was a mess for a week.
17
Simmons54321 Mar 21, 2026 +11
F*** Dov Charney, what a piece of trash. I witnessed his bullshit first hand on a sales call meeting. Pretty much every store in the world would have to be on each call, regardless of what time, and he would spend 20 minutes picking out a location and chewing them out in front of all of the other stores. He literally said the words “I smell a rat” on one call, the dude is a joke. And keep in mind, the average age of staff members was probably 18-20 years? It was a dumpster fire company
11
ashtraygirl Mar 21, 2026
Wait. Wat. Unfortunately for him or the city?
0
TheShuggieOtis Mar 21, 2026 +11
For the city. Charney has a whole bunch of sexual harassment/assault allegiations against him.
11
ashtraygirl Mar 21, 2026 +6
Oh yeah, sorry thought you were referring to the director of this movie. The American Apparel guy is definitely gross and shitty.
6
I_Like_Turtle101 Mar 21, 2026 +24
Welll.... 2010-2011 were the peak of american apparel so that chek out
24

Right? Like honestly they nailed it if these are the two references people are pointing out
16
eternallytiredcatmom Mar 21, 2026 +7
I graduated from my high school in the Mile End in 2010 lol and we would go to the AA store on Rue Mont-Royal to get our basics there when we had enough money. AA was already declining though and the sexual harassment and toxic work environment was being talked about more in MTL so it’s like the perfect touch for an “end of an era”
7
PalpitationFrosty242 Mar 22, 2026 +4
Used to LOVE AA, but the founder is a d*****

I was thinking "How you gonna do a period piece about 2011 lol" then I remember The Wedding Singer took place in 1985 and came out in 1998.
175
lifeinaglasshouse Mar 21, 2026 +120
The first episode of That '70s Show aired in 1998 and was set in 1976. A similar show today would be set in 2004.
120
iownlotsofdoors Mar 21, 2026 +58
donnie darko came out in 2001 and was set in 1988, if it released today it’d be in 2013
58
lifeinaglasshouse Mar 21, 2026 +32
Instead of the soundtrack being INXS, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Tears for Fears, it'd be the nostalgic sounds of Lorde, Daft Punk, and "Wrecking Ball" era Miley Cyrus.
32
porkpie1028 Mar 21, 2026 +21
Daft Punk is a 90’s band w/ modern relevance. Shit…LCD Soundsystem wrote Daft Punk is Playing At My House in 2005. Alabama Shakes, Frank Ocean, and Florence & The Machine might be a bit more nostalgic to the early/mid 2010’s.
21
ella_wants_to_battle Mar 21, 2026 +7
I've seen that movie at least 5 times and I never realized it took place in the 80s

Dazed and Confused came out in 1993 and was set in 1976. If it came out today the movie would be set in 2009.
5
Shenanigans80h Mar 21, 2026 +7
I’m honestly shocked there hasn’t been more shows set in the early 00’s to come out recently. Y2K nostalgia is at its highest it’s gonna be rn
7

I was born that year. Time sure flies
2
Sheensies Mar 21, 2026 +1
That’d be fine, that’s still the era of flip phones and YouTube hadn’t been invented yet- still a very different world.
1
johnnycoxxx Mar 21, 2026 +1
The high school in the district I work at is doing that for their musical. I saw it. I don’t think the 80’s references are going to land for these kids. But I thought the same thing that it was a 13 year difference between the movie release and the time period it was referencing and that 2013 didn’t seem culturally that different than today

I remember feeling old when The Wolf of Wall Street was released and everyone was talking about how it’s too soon for a period piece set in the 90s. This is even worse
15
iownlotsofdoors Mar 21, 2026 +9
mfw uncut gems
9
adamlaceless Mar 22, 2026 +2
Wdym Wolf of Wall Street was set in the 90s? I was certain that was the 80s 😭
2
hellanation Mar 23, 2026 +1
I rewatched it very recently and you are partly correct, it starts in 1987, and a good chunk of the story takes place before 1990. It’s set between 1987 (start of the movie), and 1998 (plea bargain of Belfort and divorce with Naomi, etc.)

Doesnt this take place in 2011? If so then it fits.
27

American Apparel is more 2005… 2011 was more the start of its downfall

I feel they doubled down on flat camera flash lighting nowadays cause it evokes that era in their mind but its never quite the same

The number of people in that photo who went on to be among our best actors is incredible.

57

He has a YouTube channel. He’s a fashion stylist/assistant and he talks about his auditions
29
AdmiralCharleston Mar 21, 2026 +24
Sure, but his acting career was massively impacted by the joke
24
theastro_not Mar 21, 2026 +18
Yeah he didn’t deserve that
18
Martel1234 Mar 21, 2026 +13
I’m gonna be real, the casts for this and the original movies didn’t really have the best careers afterwards. Like, Devon is only just now rising in movies, and that’s mostly due to being in Oppenheimer if anything. Sure the not my Roderick thing didn’t help, but no one from that 4th movie was gonna have a serious career.

Mitrakov Mar 21, 2026 +198
Skins and Girls are obvious references, but the whole Tumblr era is a staple (as a millennial I obviously love it) Broken Social Scene w. Metric tour / Nirvana. The band. The show. The movie, and now this - Canada really is leaning heavily into our nostalgia
198
acowstandingup Mar 21, 2026 +24
New Metric album coming out too
24
shrimptini Mar 21, 2026 +14
And new Broken Social Scene!
14
iatealotofcheese Mar 21, 2026 +9
And they're touring together right now!
9
lockecole38 Mar 22, 2026 +3
I’m so excited to get to see them and also see Stars again. Getting all three bands together in one concert is just perfection. It may be the best concert I get to go to in my lifetime.
3
guyute2588 Mar 21, 2026 +20
God I fuckin loved Broken Social Scene. And Metric. And The New Pornographers. And Destroyer. Am I Canadian? Or just 40?
20

I loved all of the above except Destroyer and am Canadian but not in 40s yet lol
5

You. Are. CANADIAN!
4
KnightHart00 Mar 21, 2026 +9
Scott Pilgrim also had the anime on Netflix plus a game that just came out two weeks ago (which also has references to Nirvana the band the show). It’s a mix of nostalgia, this brand of alt rock and indie becoming popular again, and general 90s and Y2K fashion becoming normal again (and is probably here to stay this time). I wouldn’t be surprised if we see another film looking at this same era, about 10 years after Scott Pilgrim’s setting, but in Toronto around the time Drake and the Weeknd started getting big. It’s such an oddly specific big era for Canadian music and for the city.
9
PalpitationFrosty242 Mar 22, 2026 +2
Yay BSS! I forgot about them and Do Make Say Think :-)
2
tfhermobwoayway Mar 22, 2026 +1
I’m concerned that they aren’t going to capture it. Film directors were around in the early 2010s but they weren’t exactly down in the dirt with the rest of us. I think they’ll struggle to cover exactly what made it so good. You can see it here. It’s all about a bunch of hotshot artists having sex instead of like, anything regular people were up to in the 2010s.

Nah I am too! I did my secondary school in the Mile End, had recently graduated during that era and spent most of my twenties working and hanging in that area. I’ll probably end up simultaneously loving and hating the movie.

This movie touches on that topic quite a bit. Even in 2011 this was an issue for Montreal.
10
eternallytiredcatmom Mar 21, 2026 +7
Yep. The Mile End became unaffordable a few years before, maybe a decade or so? 2011 we were seeing the HOMA and Mile Ex bs happening

As someone who moved to Montreal in 2011, it's cool to see the indie scene getting its well-deserved flowers. So many great acts got their start around that time, with Mac Demarco and Grimes being the two biggest but that city was teeming with great musicians.
3

Um. There’s seriously an actress named Barbie Ferreira who is not related to America Ferrera who was in the Barbie movie? How is this reality not a simulation?
6
Gaugzilla Mar 21, 2026 +2
She was basically fired (or character was not included past season 2) from “Euphoria,” so she basically lost weight, got a revenge body and seems to be doing quite well! But I do agree it’s wild she’s not related to any other popular Ferreira!
2
tosh_pt_2 Mar 21, 2026 +2
Some marketing nerd absolutely made sure the synopsis started with "A 24..." so that it would come up in search results for "a-24 movies"

Summer 2011. Great Recession still effecting the economy. Music venues demanding bands to sell their own tickets (we should not be a box office nor should we be a marketing company). Facebook invite quotas begin to be added to contracts.  The music scene has only gotten worse, lol.

I’m really happy for Chandler. She deserves success It’s wild that this and the film she did for Netflix drop the same day!

I Like Movies was really good. Levack infused a lot of heart and wit into it. Hoping this one is more of the same, trailer looked great at least

The main character looks v similar to this girl I was pining for in college in…2012. I feel attacked and seen simultaneously.
