Norm MacDonald UK:
"The big news this week is that O.J. Simpson has passed away at the age of 76.
Now, many are recalling his famous low-speed police chase, though if he’d tried that here on the M25, he wouldn’t have been 'fleeing'. He’d just be the fourth car from the back in a six-hour tailback near the Dartford Crossing.
Which just goes to show: you can escape a double-murder charge in Los Angeles, but you can’t escape a £12.50 daily congestion charge."

Boyle didn't get kicked off. He left himself a few years later, he was getting bored with the format.
Though they did get in trouble for it, because it was repeated just after the Russell Brand / Andrew Sachs phone call incident and all the right-wing tabloids started attacking them for airing it, even though the joke had got under the radar the first time.

I was surprised to see this because I've just read a review from an American who said the episode was "too tame" and blamed it on British culture being too uptight and reserved to freely make fun of things like Americans do (which, from the perspective of a British person, is a hilarious claim).

> Hosts Ania Magliano and Paddy Young did not hold back as they took aim at the disgraced royal, who was arrested by the U.K. police in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office after the release of the Epstein files.
> “Coming up on Weekend Update: pedophilia. But first, war!” Magliano said as the segment kicked off, eliciting laughter from the live audience
> After several Iran War-related and Al Nash guesting as a war-hungry Captain Birdseye, the focus was back on the former prince. “Renovations to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s new home, Marsh Farm, have been taking place over the last month, including the installation of Sky TV. So, if you’re watching this Andrew, hello! You’re not gonna like this next bit. Also, I’m older than I look,” Magliano joked, adding: “Andrew’s new residence, Marsh Farm, is of course named after the nearby marsh where his body will be found.”
> Next, it was Young’s turn. “It was reported this week that the police investigation into Andrew is set to widen,” he said. “The big question now is, if Andrew is charged, found guilty and put in prison, will he be able to keep his mouth shut? I hope not, said his cellmate’s p****.”
> Another winning joke took on the U.K.’s other royal family: the Beckhams. “Feuding father and son David and Brooklyn Beckham narrowly missed each other whilst at the same Beverly Hills hotel,” Young began. “The feud began when Victoria was, quote, ‘inappropriately’ close with her son at his wedding, and escalated after Brooklyn accidentally yelled out his wife’s name during sex with his mum.”

Just finished watching the first episode, I really liked it - not every sketch was great obviously, but there were more hits than misses and overall it was probably at least as good as the average British sketch show (definitely better than Mitchell and Webb's latest sketch show at least, and better than American SNL which is lucky to have one good sketch per episode from what I've seen). The cast seems good but some cast members were featured *way* more than others in this episode so I hope future episodes give them all a chance to shine

The British have arguably the most iconic comedy shows of all time. British comedy just doesn’t work a lot in the US because Americans for the most part need very in your face, obvious jokes. Brits rely a lot on subtlety and darkness more.
29
b2thazaMar 22, 2026
And the opposite is true - the US humor doesn't land so well in the UK / abroad because it's far too bland and like bad improv.
The UK show can use the same format but it needs to be really sharp to gain a following.
I was surprised by how British it was - a particular shout out to the cunty earring!

I think unfortunately SNL U.K. won’t stick.
TV is almost dead now. I don’t know ANYONE in the 20s-30s who regularly watches tv, which I think is the demographic this is targeted at.

It will be interesting to see, because these shows often gain traction from catch up and repeat viewings.
I think the Variety article said UK views of US SNL (on sky comedy) are about 5k, but 225k people tuned in to SNL UK. That's not nothing, but will be interesting to see if it has the time to build.

The thing is SNL has thrived in the digital era because of it's format. It'll be interesting to see if the UK version can manage that as well as the US one. I think they'll need a couple of genuinely viral sketches in this first 8 episodes to make it stick but there is definitely the potential there for that.
1
comeatmefrankMar 23, 2026

SNL is also an American institution, like late night talk shows. It’s never worked successfully when extremely American ideas are shoe horned into British media, because a lot of the time they’re writing them in the style which made it successful in the US.
1
danny_healy_raygunMar 23, 2026
+1
Is SNL "an extremely American idea" though. Ultimately its just a live sketch show and that's worked fine in the UK historically. This idea that the Brits don't get or like American comedy is completely bogus too. Friends, The Office (US), Cheers, etc are/were all huge in Britain and things like Always Sunny, Seinfeld, Community, etc are beloved in a similar way to how they are in the US.

It absolutely is not doing better than ever. Streaming platforms where you can watch things on demand have totally dominated, which kind of takes away from the whole idea of Saturday Night LIVE. Gone are the days of people regularly waiting for shows to come up, because back then you couldn’t just go on Netflix.
1
JimmniMar 22, 2026
Some US humour does, but it's often not what's most enduring in the US. Friends? Smash hit, everyone watched it, still popular decades later. Seinfeld? Never really made much impact. I don't know anyone who would list it in their favourite comedies.

This stuff is generally par for the course in the UK.
For one of his Promethiad specials five or six years ago, Frankie Boyle went on a long spiel about how Prince Philip was planning to project his soul into Princess Charlotte's body, transfer her soul into a regimental goat, and then serve the Royal Family a delicious goat curry.
He also did a long monologue on New World Order about going on a drug fuelled bender after slaughtering a goat with a hand axe to read the future in its intestines, because he was worried about the future of the trucking industry as a big investor in human trafficking.

There was a copycat attempt in the 80s called “Saturday Live” but it wasn’t related to the American version.
